Background Treeline ecotones of Mediterranean ecoregions have been affected by the increasing intensity and severity of droughts. Even though the effect of droughts on forest dynamics has been widely documented, knowledge is relatively scarce of how extreme climate episodes affect the hydraulic structure and, therefore, the phys-iology of woody plants. The Mediterranean Andes have experienced an uninterrupted period of drought since 2010, including an extremely dry year in 2019 with approximately 80% rainfall deficit. Here, we investigated shifts in wood anatomical and physiological traits of Kageneckia angustifolia, an endemic treeline species, in response to this drought *** We evaluated the xylem plasticity of three K. angustifolia populations across their natural distribution(31–35° SL) based on anatomical(vessel structure and distribution) and physiological(intrinsic water-use efficiency) variables in the tree rings. We focused on the period 2000–2020 that corresponds to before the megadrought(2000–2007),(ii) megadrought(2008–2018) and(iii) hyperdrought(2019–2020). The variables were annualized and analyzed by linear mixed-effects *** Our results provide insights to the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying the resilience of treeline forests to persistent droughts in central Chile. We found that the extreme drought in 2019–2020 triggered shifts in vessel size and frequency that increased hydraulic safety. These significant shifts in vessel traits occurred in parallel with a decrease in pit aperture area and an increase in water-use efficiency, further increasing the resilience of K. angustifolia to extreme drought *** Our results revealed coordinated shifts in vessel size and frequency and water-use efficiency in response to the megadrought, thereby reducing vulnerability to hydraulic failure. In this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023;14:*** is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant(LT)may need to have a total hip arthroplasty(THA)or total knee arthroplasty(TKA)*** et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general ***,there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA than in the general population(individuals without LT).Therefore,in this Editorial I would like to point out that there is controversy in the literature regarding whether LT patients undergoing THA/TKA have higher mortality than the general ***,future research should attempt to resolve this controversy.

Efficient removal of the recalcitrant metamizole contaminant from drinking water by using a CaLaCoO_(9) perovskite supported on recycled polyethylene

Metamizole(MZ)is a widely used anti-inflammatory *** to its common use,this contaminant is found in sewage and *** order to reduce the contamination produced by the MZ,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic composite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)*** nanoparticles had a microplate-like morphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm according to the analysis of *** photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a removal efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO composite was employed for the photocatalytic degradation of MZ,a maximum degradation of 92.5%was *** influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of MZ after 240 min of UV-Vis ***,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO composites and found that the maximum loss of degradation was 5%.Furthermore,scavenger experiments demonstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are formed during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of ***,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Raman analysis demonstrated the formation of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recombination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the ***,the studies performed in this work proved that composites made with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharmaceutical compounds.

Pelleting and particle size reduction of corn increase net energy and digestibility of fiber,protein,and fat in corn-soybean meal diets fed to group-housed pigs

Background:Alcohol and illicit drugs(AID)continue to be a major global health *** preventable,AID is linked to millions of deaths annually *** situation is particularly grave for young people,with AID being a major direct risk factor for disability-adjusted youth life-years lost and *** further contributes to assaults,road crashes,accidental poisoning,and suicide,leading to long-term issues and public health ***:This study aimed at disclosing current AID prevalence data for Argentinian,Bulgarian,Chilean and Romanian *** shed light on the predictors of AID in young people from those ***:The study used an online survey to gather data from people aged 18 to 25(n=1,297).The survey was underpinned by the theory of planned behaviour(TPB).Predictors were investigated separately for drinking alcohol and using illicit ***:Our data revealed that across the four target countries,49%to 90%of the participants drank alcohol,and 8%to 35%used illicit drugs in the past three *** 20%and 91%of them intended to drink,and between 8%and 31%intended to use illicit drugs in the following three *** TPB model predicted statistically significant(P<0.001)amounts of variance in drinking alcohol(between 61%and 72%)and using illicit drugs(between 20.3%and 74.4%).Intention was consistent in significantly predicting both *** around the predictive validity of self-efficacy,age and gender was mixed across the investigated ***:This research provided an update on the scarce AID epidemiological *** also supplied evidence about what theoretically-informed measures might be useful targets of interventions in the case of Argentina,Bulgaria,Chile and *** new knowledge of understanding substance abuse determinants and prevalence may help researchers and practitioners better meet young people's health prevention needs.
