BACKGROUnD： The interpretation of non-verbal social signals relies heavily on the ability to perceive biological motion. The posterior superior temporal sulcus is an important part of a network involved in biological motion processing. However, the underlying functional organization remains poorly understood. Several studies have suggested topographical representation of motion from different body parts within this region. However, other studies have shown that the posterior superior temporal sulcus responds equally to any body part. OBJECTIVE： Through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging, the effects of socially relevant biological motion stimuli to activate a specific cortical area within posterior superior temporal sulcus, even if different body parts are involved in motion, will be analyzed. DESIGn, TIME AnD SETTInG： A functional magnetic resonance imaging, block-design was performed at the Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Surgical Medical Investigation Center, Havana, Cuba between 2004 and 2005. PARTICIPAnTS： Thirteen healthy volunteers, from 19 to 55 years of age and compris!ng eight males and five females, were included in the study. METHODS： A conjunction analysis of responses to natural, dynamic, fearful, facial expressions and point-light, body-motion animations. MAIn OUTCOME MEASURES： The corresponding functionally specialized areas, as well as neural areas significant for both types of stimuli, were identified. RESULTS： One region within the posterior superior temporal sulcus of the right hemisphere was equally activated by facial and body complex motion. COnCLUSIOn： A site of common neural activity existed within the posterior superior temporal sulcus, which was not specific to a biological motion type. In addition, the activity was not related to a topographically organized body-part map, which suggested high-level visual representation of biological motion in this region.

AIM To evaluate the effects of asymmetric dimethylarginine(ADMA) in renal arteries from portal hypertensive and cirrhotic *** Rat renal arteries from Sham(n = 15), pre-hepatic portal hypertension(PPVL; n = 15) and bile duct ligation and excision-induced cirrhosis(BDL; n = 15) were precontracted with norepinephrine, and additional contractions were induced with ADMA(10-6-10-3 mol/L), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide(nO) synthase. Concentration-response curves to acetylcholine(1 × 10-9^(-3) × 10^(-6) mol/L) were determined in precontractedrenal artery segments with norepinephrine in the absence and in the presence of ADMA. Kidneys were collected to determine the protein expression and activity of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase(DDAH), an enzyme that catabolizes ADMA. RESULTS In renal arteries precontracted with norepinephrine, ADMA caused endothelium-dependent contractions. The pD 2 values to ADMA were similar in the Sham and PPVL groups(4.20 ± 0.08 and 4.11 ± 0.09, P > 0.05, respectively), but were lower than those of the BDL group(4.79 ± 0.16, P ne-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation that did not differ, in terms of p D2 and maximal relaxation, among the 3 groups studied. Treatment with ADMA(3 × 10^(-4) mol/L) inhibited acetylcholine-induced relaxation in the 3 groups, but the inhibition was higher(P n the BDL group compared with that for the Sham and PPVL groups. The m RnA and protein expression of DDAH-1 were similar in kidneys from the three groups. Conversely, DDAH-2 expression was increased(P n PPVL and further enhanced(P n the BDL group. However, renal DDAH activity was significantly decreased in the BDL group. COnCLUSIOn Cirrhosis increased the inhibitory effect of ADMA on basal- and induced-release of nO in renal arteries, and decreased DDAH activity in the kidney.

AIM:To assess the effect of the intravitreal dexamethasone implant(DEX)Ozurdex on the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and central retinal thickness(CRT)in patients with diabetic macular edema(DME).METHODS:Totally 43 eyes(24 naive and 19 previously treated)were included in the *** and single-center study involved patients with a clinical diagnosed of DME,who received treatment with DEX implant and had a follow-up of at least 12 *** endpoints included changes in BCVA and ***:At month 12,mean improvement in BCVA from baseline was 20.4±20.8 letters and 6.8±6.9 letters in naive and previously treated patients,respectively(P=0.0132).The naive patients achieved the BCVA improvement significantly faster(2.4±1.5 mo)than the previously treated ones(3.5±2.4 mo,P=0.0298;MannWhitney test).The proportion of eyes gaining≥15 letters was 54.2%and 21.1%in the non-previously treated and previously treated groups,respectively(P=0.0293).CRT was significantly reduced from 484.0±119.8 and 487.5±159.9μm to 272.0±39.2 and 233.5±65.7μm in the naive and previously treated patients,respectively;Pnce of subretinal fluid was significantly associated with the proportion of patients achieving a BCVA improvement≥5 letters[HR(95%CI),1.23(1.04 to 1.45),P=0.0145];≥10 letters[HR(95%CI),1.75(1.10 to 2.77),P=0.0182];and≥15 letters[HR(95%CI),2.04(1.03 to 4.02),P=0.0407].naive patients received less DEX implants throughout the study than the previously treated ones(1.8±0.6 vs 2.3±0.6,P=0.0172,respectively).Totally 9 patients(20.9%)have developed ocular hypertension,which was successfully controlled with topical hypotensive *** the 23 phakic eyes at baseline,5 eyes(21.7%)either had new onset lens opacity or progression of an existing opacity during the study *** of them(2 in the naive group and 2 in the previously treated one)required cataract surgery at months 4,6,6,and 6,***:The results obtained in this

Bacterial ability to colonize the rhizosphere of plants in arsenic（As） contaminated soils is highly important for symbiotic and free-living plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria（PGPR）used as inoculants, since they can contribute to enhance plant As tolerance and limit metalloid uptake by plants. The aim of this work was to study the effect of As on growth,exopolysaccharide（EPS） production, biofilm formation and motility of two strains used as soybean inoculants, Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109 and Azospirillum brasilense Az39. The metabolism of arsenate（As（V）） and arsenite（As（III）） and their removal and/or possible accumulation were also evaluated. The behavior of both bacteria under As treatment was compared and discussed in relation to their potential for colonizing plant rhizosphere with high content of the metalloid. B. japonicum E109 growth was reduced with As（III）concentration from 10 μM while A. brasilense Az39 showed a reduction of growth with As（III） from 500 μM. EPS and biofilm production increased significantly under 25 μM As（III）for both strains. Moreover, this was more notorious for Azospirillum under 500 μM As（III）,where motility was seriously affected. Both bacterial strains showed a similar ability to reduce As（V）. However, Azospirillum was able to oxidize more As（III）（around 53%） than Bradyrhizobium（17%）. In addition, both strains accumulated As in cell biomass. The behavior of Azospirillum under As treatments suggests that this strain would be able to colonize efficiently As contaminated soils. In this way, inoculation with A. brasilense Az39 would positively contribute to promoting growth of different plant species under As treatment.

BACKGROUnD:Despite a number of studies show the superiority of early over delayed cholecystectomy in the treatment of acute cholecystitis,there is still controversy over the time for *** study aimed to assess the use of early versus delayed cholecystectomy for the treatment of acute cholecystitis in terms of complications,conversion to open surgery and mean hospital ***:We collected patients with acute cholecystitis treated at a referral center for a year,and retrospectively analyzed the chosen therapeutic approach,the percentage of conversion of early cholecystectomy to open surgery,appearance of surgical complications,and mean hospital ***:The study included 117 patients,44 women and 73 men,who had a mean age of 67.36±15.74 *** cholecystectomy was chosen in 31(26.5%) and delayed cholecystectomy in 74 patients(63.2%).Of the 74 patients,28(37.8%) required emergency performance of delayed cholecystectomy,and 19(25.7%) had not undergone surgery by the end of the *** no differences were observed between early and delayed cholecystectomy in terms of surgical complications and conversion to open surgery,mean hospital stay was nevertheless significantly shorter in the early versus the delayed cholecystectomy group(8.32±4.98 vs 15.96±8.89 days).COnCLUSIOn:Under the routine working conditions of a hospital that is neither specially dedicated to the surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis nor provided with specific management guidelines,early cholecystectomy can reduce the hospital stay without increase of the conversion rate or complications.

Tannery wastewater causes serious ecological and sanitary damage. Chemical analysis of water from Binlamdoune River of the medina of Fez was conducted and the results revealed the presence of toxic elements from tanneries and other industrial activities, which strongly affected water quality. To determine the effectiveness of bioremediation for depollution, we studied the abundance and diversity of bacteria residing in these polluted environments. Conducting denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis （PCR-DGGE） of the 16S rDnA area using primers related to bacteria showed a bacterial community belonging to eubacterial groups, that is, Epsilonproteobacteria, Clostridia, Lactobacillales, Bacteroidetes, Gammaproteobacteria, and Alphaproteobacteria. In addition, cloning displayed the presence of clones belonging to the Firmicutes group. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy revealed a significant heterogeneity of microorganism forms and structures. These endogenous microbes could have a significant role in the purification of Binlamdoune River and Fez tannery wastewater.

Dear Editor,Drug repurposing is a convenient alternative when the need for new drugs in an unexpected medical scenario is urgent,as is the case of emerging *** recent years,approaches based on network biology have demonstrated to be superior to genecentric ones.1 Here,we use an innovative methodology that combines mechanistic modeling of the signal transduction circuits related to SARS-CoV-2 infection(the COVID-19 disease map)with a machine-learning algorithm that learns potential causal interactions between proteins,already targets of drugs,and specific signaling circuits in the COVID-19 disease map,to suggest potentially repurposable drugs.

Actinomycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous lesion caused by the pathogenic bacterium nocardia (n.) brasiliensis. Yeast antigens of Candida (C.) albicans increase the interferon (IFn)-γ and TCD4+ cells levels that enhance the phagocytic killing of n. brasiliensis, able to survive inside phagocytes and to grow in clustered colonies that form grains. The aim of this work was to test the effect of a crude protein extract of C. albicans on the levels of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells and on the outcome of actinomycetoma lesion. Five BALB/c mice with n. brasiliensis infection at left hind footpad were treated four times every other day with C. albicans crude protein extract (CPE). Five uninfected mice treated with CPE or infected mice treated with sterile phosphate-saline buffer were included as positive and negative control groups, respectively. Footpad thickness was recorded in all groups. Once the treatments were finished, single cell suspensions from blood and spleen were prepared for assessing the amount (%) of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells by cytofluorometry;presence of TCD4+ and IFn-γ in footpad sections was detected by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, respectively. By comparison with the negative control group, infected mice treated with CPE had lower footpad thickness, higher percentage of blood and spleen IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells as well as in situ presence of IFn-γ and TCD4+ cells. These findings showed that CPE from C. albicans displayed an immunoadjuvant activity that enhanced the presence of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells and IFn-γ for the resolution of n. brasiliensis actinomycetoma in mice.
