Highlights of ASS234: a novel and promising therapeutic agent for Alzheimer’s disease therapy

There is no effective treatment to face Alzheimer’s disease *** molecules are a good approach against the multiple physiopathological events associated with its development and *** this context,N-((5-(3-(1-benzylpiperidin-4-yl)propoxy)-1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl)-N-methylprop-2-yn-1-amine(ASS234)has been tested achieving promising ***234 has demonstrated to cross the blood-brain barrier in vivo,and a good in silico safety profile being less toxic than ***,ASS234 reversibly inhibits human acetyl-and butyryl-cholinesterase,and irreversibly inhibits human monoamine oxidase A and ***,this multitarget molecule has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties,and inhibitsΑβ1–42 andΑβ1–40 *** about the mechanism of action,several signaling pathways related to Alzheimer’s disease had been explored showing that ASS234 induces the wingless-type MMTV integration site(Wnt)family and several members of the heat shock proteins family and moreover counteracts neuroinflammatory and oxidative stress-related genes promoting the induction of several key antioxidant ***,in vivo experiments with ASS234 in C57BL/6J mice displayed its ability to reduce amyloid plaque burden and gliosis in the cortex and hippocampus,ameliorating scopolamine-induced learning *** we gather the information regarding ASS234 evaluated so far,showing its ability to face different targets,necessary to counteract a neurodegenerative disease as complex as the Alzheimer’s disease.

The Major Facilitator Superfamily(MFS)is ubiquitous in living organisms and represents the largest group of secondary active membrane *** plants,significant research efforts have focused on the role of specific families within the MFS,particularly those transporting macronutrients(C,N,and P)that constitute the vast majority of the members of this *** MFS families remain less explored,although a plethora of additional substrates and physiological functions have been ***,the lack of a systematic approach to analyzing the MFS as a whole has obscured the high diversity and versatility of these ***,we present a phylogenetic analysis of all annotated MFS domaincontaining proteins encoded in the Arab/dops/s fA?a//ana genome and propose that this superfamily of transporters consists of 218 members,clustered in 22 *** reviewing the available information regarding the diversity in biological functions and substrates of Arab/dops/s MFS members,we provide arguments for intensified research on these membrane transporters to unveil the breadth of their physiological relevance,disclose the molecular mechanisms underlying their mode of action,and explore their biotechnological potential.

Exploring the reproductive ecology of the tropical semifossorial snake Ninia atrata

Based on histological analyses and field studies,this research describes the reproductive ecology of a population of Ninia atrata snakes inhabiting an oil palm ***,through a multivariate approach,we explored the main drivers of reproductive output in *** showed that prey abundance and food intake were crucial variables contributing to reproductive *** linear regression models showed that neonates had high sensitivity(R2=55.29%)to extreme changes in climate,which was strongly related to slug and snail abundance variability and microhabitat *** cycles were markedly different between the sexes,being continuous in males and cyclical in *** this variation,reproductive cycles at the population level were seasonal *** recruitment of neonates all year,multiple clutches,high mating frequency,and continuous sperm production characterized the reproductive phenology of *** addition,a significant number of previtellogenic females presented oviductal sperm as well as uterine scars,suggesting a high precocity in the *** main drivers of reproductive output also differed between the *** females,clutch size and secondary follicle variability were highly related to stomach bolus volume,fat body area,and body *** males,height of piles of palm leaves and body mass,rather than intrinsic reproductive traits,were the main drivers of sperm ***,in both cases,the relationship between body mass,prey abundance,and food intake suggests that *** follows the income breeding strategy to compensate for reproductive costs and to maximize fitness.

Vegetation recovery after fire in mountain grasslands of Argentina

Fire is a natural disturbance occurring every few years in many grasslands ecosystems. However, since European colonization, fire has been highly reduced or even suppressed in Argentinean grasslands, fostering ignitable material accumulation. This has led to occasional catastrophic controldemanding fire events, extended for larger areas. The aims of this work are to study vegetation recovery and change after a non-natural fire event in mountain grasslands. The study area is located in the Ventania mountain system, mid-eastern Argentina. We studied vegetation recovery after fire(January 2014) in two different communities: grass-steppes(grasslands) and shrub-steppes(open low shrublands). We measured vegetation cover, species richness and bare ground percentage in burned and unburned areas 1, 4, 8, 11 and 23 months after fire. Vegetation surveys were also performed at the end of the growing season(December) 11 and 23 months after fire. Data were analyzed using regression analysis, ANOVA and multivariate analysis(NMS, PERMANOVA). Both communities increased their vegetation cover at the same rate, without differences between burned and unburned areas after two years. Species richness was higher in shrublands and their recovery was alsofaster than in grasslands. Considering functional composition, besides transient changes during the first year after fire, there were no differences in abundance of different functional vegetation groups two years after fire. At the same time, shrublands showed no differences in species composition, while grasslands had a different species composition in burned and unburned plots. Also, burned grassland showed a higher species richness than unburned grassland. Data shown mountain vegetation in Pampas grassland is adapted to fire, recovering cover and richness rapidly after fire and thus reducing soil erosion risks. Vegetation in mountain Pampas seems to be well adapted to fire, but in grasslands species composition has changed due to fire.

Quantum Transport Properties of Chemically Functionalized Long Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes

We present a first-principles study of the electronic transport properties of micrometer long semiconducting carbon nanotubes randomly covered with carbene functional groups. Whereas prior studies suggested that metallic tubes are hardly affected by such addends, we show here that the conductance of semiconducting tubes with standard diameter is, on the contrary, severely damaged. The configurational-averaged conductance as a function of tube diameter, with a coverage of up to one hundred molecules, is extracted. Our results indicate that the search for a conductance-preserving covalent functionalization route remains a challenging issue.
