Psychiatric outcomes in outpatients affected by long COVID:A link between mental health and persistence of olfactory complaint

BACKGROUND Anosmia was one of the main symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).A psychiatric history(i.e.,depression)may be an independent contributor to the risk of COVID-19 diagnosis,and COVID-19 survivors appear to have an increased risk of neuropsychiatric sequelae(bidirectional association).AIM To compare the rate of psychiatric disorder among post-COVID patients without anosmia vs patients with persistent olfactory *** We conducted a prospective case control study from March 2020 to May *** recruited at the ENT department of Nice University Hospital had a subjective olfactory complaint(visual analogue scale)for over 6 wk and a molecular or CT-proven severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 diagnosis confirmed by ***-COVID patients without persistent olfactory disorders were recruited at the university hospital infectiology *** medical histories were collected by a psychiatrist during the *** Thirty-four patients with post-COVID-19 olfactory complaints were included in the first group of the *** percent of the patients were female(n=17).The group’s mean age was 40.5±12.9 *** control group included 32 participants,of which 34.4%were female(n=11),and had a mean age of 61.2±12.2 *** rate of psychiatric disorder among post-COVID patients with olfactory complaints was significatively higher(41.7%)than among patients without(18.8%)(χ2=5.9,P=0.015).CONCLUSION The presence of a psychiatric history may constitute a potential risk factor for the development of long COVID due to persistent *** therefore seems important to establish reinforced health monitoring after a COVID 19 infection in at-risk *** prospective,translational,and collaborative studies are needed to extrapolate these results to the general population.

We calculate numerically the optical chiral forces in rectangular cross-section dielectric waveguides for potential enantiomer *** study considers force strength and time needed for separating chiral nanoparticles,mainly via quasi-TE guided modes at short wavelengths(405 nm)and the 90°-phase-shifted combination of quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes at longer wavelengths(1310 nm).Particle tracking simulations show successful enantiomer separation within two *** results suggest the feasibility of enantiomeric separation of nanoparticles displaying sufficient chirality using simple silicon photonic integrated circuits,with wavelength selection based on the nanoparticle size.

Tuberculosis(TB)remains a huge global healthcare challenge even in the 21^(st) century though the prevalence has dropped in developed countries in recent *** mellitus(DM)is an important risk factor for the development and perpetuation of TB owing to the immune dysfunction in patients with *** coexistence of both diseases in the same individual also aggravates disease severity,complications,and chance of treatment failure because of gross immune alterations posed by DM as well as *** complex cellular and humoral immunological factors are involved in the dangerous interaction between TB and DM,some of which remain unknown even *** is highly important to identify the risk factors for TB in patients with DM,and vice versa,to ensure early diagnosis and management to prevent complications from this ominous *** their research study published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Diabetes,Shi et al elaborate on the factors associated with the development of TB in a large cohort of DM patients from *** such research output from different regions of the world is expected to improve our knowledge to fight the health devastation posed by TB in patients with diabetes.

Despite the advent of relatively reliable modalities of diagnosing diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN),such as nerve conduction studies,there is still a knowledge gap about the pathophysiology,and thus limited available in-terventions for symptom control and curtailing disease *** pharma-cologic aspect of management is mainly centred on pain control,however,there are several important aspects of DPN such as loss of vibration sense,pressure sense,and proprioception which are associated with risks to lower limb health,which pharmacotherapy does not ***,published evidence suggests non-pharmacologic interventions such as glycaemic control through dietary modification and exercise need to be combined with other measures such as psychotherapy,to reach a desired,however modest *** is emerging as an important treatment modality for several chronic medical conditions including neuropathic and other pain *** their study published in the World Journal of Diabetes on the potential of acupuncture to reduce DPN symptoms and enhance nerve conduction parameters,Hoerder et al have been able to demonstrate that acupuncture improves sensory function and that this effect is likely sustained two months after treatment *** previous studies also support these findings,larger multi-center randomized control trials including a sham-controlled arm accounting for a placebo effect are ***,given the satisfactory safety profile and the positive results found in these studies,it is likely that acupuncture may become an important aspect of the repertoire of effective DPN management.

While chronic hyperglycaemia resulting from poorly controlled diabetes mellitus(DM)is a well-known precursor to complications such as diabetic retinopathy,neuropathy(including autonomic neuropathy),and nephropathy,a paradoxical intensification of these complications can rarely occur with aggressive glycemic management resulting in a rapid reduction of glycated ***,acute onset or worsening of retinopathy and treatment induced neuropathy of diabetes are more common among these complications,rarely other problems such as albuminuria,diabetic kidney disease,Charcot’s neuroarthropathy,gastroparesis,and urinary bladder dysfunction are also *** World Journal of Diabetes recently published a rare case of all these complications,occurring in a young type 1 diabetic female intensely managed during pregnancy,as a case report by Huret et *** is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the pathobiology,prevalence,predisposing factors,and management strategies for acute onset,or worsening of microvascular complications when rapid glycemic control is achieved,which serves to alleviate patient morbidity,enhance disease management compliance,and possibly to avoid medico-legal issues around this rare clinical *** editorial delves into the dynamics surrounding the acute exacerbation of microvascular complications in poorly controlled DM during rapid glycaemic control.

This work develops the idea that is possible to affirm that beyond its nuances. Ageism has shown a surprising force of prevalence in western society. Nourished by mythical, empirical, ideological and health elements, it has been enormously successful in imposing an image of vulnerability, decrepitude and illness on older adults. Since 1969, when the first academic article on the subject was published, much has been written on the subject, but little progress has been made in terms of social and state policies and community awareness. When an attempt has been made to propose an alternative to decrepit (Aristotelian as we suggest in this paper) ageism, nothing has emerged but a new kind of ageism that has imposed the supposed need that the older adult “must” be “productive”, “young”, “vigorous”, posing the impossibility, in short, once again, of the older adult living spontaneously as an older adult.

Dynamic convergent shock compression initiated by return current in high-intensity laser-solid interactions

We investigate the dynamics of convergent shock compression in solid cylindrical targets irradiated by an ultrafast relativistic laser *** particle-in-cell simulations and coupled hydrodynamic simulations reveal that the compression process is initiated by both magnetic pressure and surface ablation associated with a strong transient surface return current with density of the order of 10^(17) A/m^(2) and lifetime of 100 *** results show that the dominant compression mechanism is governed by the plasma β,i.e.,the ratio of thermal pressure to magnetic *** targets with small radius and low atomic number Z,the magnetic pressure is the dominant shock compression *** to a scaling law,as the target radius and Z increase,the surface ablation pressure becomes the main mechanism generating convergent ***,an indirect experimental indication of shocked hydrogen compression is provided by optical shadowgraphy measurements of the evolution of the plasma expansion *** results presented here provide a novel basis for the generation of extremely high pressures exceeding Gbar(100 TPa)to enable the investigation of high-pressure physics using femtosecond J-level laser pulses,offering an alternative to nanosecond kJ-laser pulse-driven and pulsed power Z-pinch compression methods.

Cost-effective multilevel techniques for homogeneous hyperbolic conservation laws are very successful in reducing the computational cost associated to high resolution shock capturing numerical *** they do not involve any special data structure,and do not induce savings in memory requirements,they are easily implemented on existing codes and are recommended for 1D and 2D simulations when intensive testing is *** multilevel technique can also be applied to balance laws,but in this case,numerical errors may be induced by the *** present a series of numerical tests that point out that the use of monotonicity-preserving interpolatory techniques eliminates the numerical errors observed when using the usual 4-point centered Lagrange interpolation,and leads to a more robust multilevel code for balance laws,while maintaining the efficiency rates observed forhyperbolic conservation laws.
