Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme heat events that aggravate its negative impact on plant development and agricultural *** experiments designed to study plant adaption to heat stress apply homogeneous high temperatures to both shoot and ***,this treatment does not mimic the conditions in natural fields,where roots grow in a dark environment with a descending temperature *** high temperatures severely decrease cell division in the root meristem,compromising root growth,while increasing the division of quiescent center cells,likely in an attempt to maintain the stem cell niche under such harsh ***,we engineered the TGRooZ,a device that generates a temperature gradient for in vitro or greenhouse growth *** root systems of plants exposed to high shoot temperatures but cultivated in theTGRooZ grow efficiently and maintain their functionality to sustain proper shoot growth and ***,gene expression and rhizosphere or root microbiomecomposition are significantly less affected in TGRooZ-grown roots than in high-temperature-grown roots,correlating with higher root *** data indicate that use of the TGRooZ in heat-stress studies can improve our knowledge of plant response to high temperatures,demonstrating its applicability from laboratory studies to the field.

Astrocytes, reactive astrogliosis, and glial scar formation in traumatic brain injury

Traumatic brain injury is a global health crisis,causing significant death and disability *** that follows traumatic brain injury has serious consequences for neuronal survival and cognitive impairments,with astrocytes involved in this *** traumatic brain injury,astrocytes rapidly become reactive,and astrogliosis propagates from the injury core to distant brain *** astroglial proteins are downregulated near the traumatic brain injury core,while pro-inflammatory astroglial genes are *** altered gene expression is considered a pathological remodeling of astrocytes that produces serious consequences for neuronal survival and cognitive *** addition,glial scar formed by reactive astrocytes is initially necessary to limit immune cell infiltration,but in the long term impedes axonal reconnection and functional *** therapeutic strategies for traumatic brain injury are focused on preventing acute ***,cannabinoids,progesterone,beta-blockers,and cerebrolysin demonstrate neuroprotective benefits but most of them have not been studied in the context of *** this review,we discuss the cell signaling pathways activated in reactive astrocytes following traumatic brain injury and we discuss some of the potential new strategies aimed to modulate astroglial responses in traumatic brain injury,especially using cell-targeted strategies with miRNAs or lncRNA,viral vectors,and repurposed drugs.

Keeping immune responses in an off state in the absence of a threat is essential to avoid the deleterious consequences of autoimmunity,while their timely activation upon perception of non-self determines the capacity of an organism to defend against potential *** plants,constitutive or untimely activation of immune responses dramatically limits growth and reproduction,highlighting the essential role of negative regulators of immunity for plant *** a number of such regulators have been identified in the past couple of decades,the full complexity of the molecular mechanisms deployed by plants to ensure an appropriately controlled activation of immune responses,as well as their coordination with growth and development,are still largely elusive.

This paper presents an upper limb exoskeleton that allows cognitive(through electromyography signals)and physical user interaction(through load cells sensors)for passive and active exercises that can activate neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation process of people who suffer from a neurological *** the exoskeleton to be easily accepted by patients who suffer from a neurological injury,we used the ISO9241-210:2010 as a methodology design *** the first steps of the design process,design requirements were collected from previous usability tests and ***,as a second step,a technological solution is proposed,and as a third step,the system was evaluated through performance and user *** part of the technological solution and to allow patient participation during the rehabilitation process,we have proposed a hybrid admittance control whose input is load cell or electromyography *** hybrid admittance control is intended for active therapy exercises,is easily implemented,and does not need musculoskeletal modeling to ***,electromyography signals classification models and features were evaluated to identify the best settings for the cognitive human–robot interaction.

A tribute to Dr Arnold *** This perspective was written in celebration of Dr Arnold ***'s 80th birthday.I chose to write this prospective about restoration of p53 activity in tumors for two reasons:Arnie (as we all know him) has become interested in restoring p53 activity in tumor cells and such a review did not *** was also my postdoctoral advisor and writing this perspective is just a small tribute for the huge impact he has had on my research career (and that of many others),from supporting me when I left his laboratory for a faculty position before I had even published a paper,to serving as a sounding board for numerous ideas.

Investigate the Wake Flow on Houseflies with Particle-Tracking-Velocimetry and Schlieren Photography

Utilizing high-speed schlieren photography and particle-tracking-velocimetry,the wake flow of tethered houseflies is *** high-speed schlieren photography is implemented on tethered houseflies inside an air container with a stable vertical temperature gradient to visualize the disturbed wake flow from the *** resulting photography images were then processed with the physics based optical flow method to derive the light-path averaged flow ***,the state of the art:Shake-the-Box system is implemented on a tethered housefly to measure the volumetric flow field in the wake of the insect,revealing interesting flow behavior and structures that can also be observed and correlated to the schlieren photography *** the dimensionless velocity magnitude of the wake flow from the two experiments,a good qualitative agreement is reached,suggesting the viability of high-speed schlieren photography in investigating the wake flow of small ***,the high-speed schlieren photography is successfully applied on a housefly that is taking off from the ground,visualizing the disturbed wake flow on the freely flying insect that is challenging to visualize with other methods.

The effect of humidity on the CO_2/N_2 separation performance of copolymers based on hard polyimide segments and soft polyether chains:Experimental and modeling

In this work, we studied two copolymers formed by segments of a rubbery polyether（PPO or PEO） and of a glassy polyimide（BPDA-ODA or BKDA-ODA） suitable for gas separation and CO2 capture. Firstly, we assessed the absorption of water vapor in the materials, as a function of relative humidity（R.H.）, finding that the humidity uptake of the copolymers lies between that of the corresponding pure homopolymers ***, we studied the effect of humidity on CO2 and N2 permeability, as well as on CO2/N2 selectivity, up to R.H. of 75%. The permeability decreases with increasing humidity, while the ideal selectivity remains approximately constant in the entire range of water activity investigated. The humidity-induced decrease of permeability in the copolymers is much smaller than the one observed in polyimides such as Matrimid? confirming the positive effect of the polyether phase on the membrane ***, we modeled the humidity-induced decrease of gas solubility, diffusivity and, consequently, permeability, using a suitable approach that considers the free volume theory for diffusion and LF model for solubility. Such model allows estimating the extent of competition that the gases undergo with water during sorption in the membranes, as a function of the relative humidity, as well as the expected reduction of free volume by means of water molecules occupation and consequent reduction of diffusivity.

State Variable Model for Considering the Parasitic Inductor Resistance on the Open Loop Performance of DC to DC Converters

This paper shows DC and small-signal circuit models for the PWM DC to DC buck, boost and back/ boost converters with the equivalent series resistance of the inductor. The DC voltage transfer function and the efficiency of the converter are derived from the DC model. Small-signal open-loop characteristics are derived from the small-signal model based on a state variable model. A design example proves the performance of the circuit and verification of the model.

Targeting the insulin-like growth factor pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Only 30%-40% of the patients with HCC are eligible for curative treatments, which include surgical resection as the first option, liver transplantation and percutaneous ablation. Unfortunately, there is a high frequency of tumor recurrence after surgical resection and most HCC seem resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Sorafenib, a multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is the only chemotherapeutic option for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients treated with Sorafenib have a significant increase in overall survival of about three months. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop alternative treatments. Due to its role in cell growth and development, the insulin-like growth factor system is commonly deregulated in many cancers. Indeed, the insulin-like growth factor(IGF) axis has recently emerged as a potential target for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment. To this aim, several inhibitors of the pathway have been developed suchas monoclonal antibodies, small molecules, antisense oligonucleotides or small interfering RNAs. However recent studies suggest that, unlike most tumors, HCC development requires increased signaling through insulin growth factor Ⅱ rather than insulin growth factor Ⅰ. This may have great implications in the future treatment of HCC. This review summarizes the role of the IGF axis in liver carcinogenesis and the current status of the strategies designed to target the IGF-Ⅰ signaling pathway for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment.

Extensively studied since the early nineties,cable-driven robots have attracted the growing interest of the industrial and scientific community due to their desirable and peculiar *** particular,underconstrained and planar cable robots can find application in several fields,and specifically,in the packaging *** planning of dynamically feasible trajectories(i.e.,trajectories along which cable slackness and excessive tensions are avoided) is particularly challenging when dealing with such a topology of cable robots,which rely on gravity to maintain their cables in *** paper,after stressing the current relevance of cable robots,presents an extension and a generalization of a model-based method developed to translate typical cable tension bilateral bounds into intuitive limits on the velocity and acceleration of the robot end effector along a prescribed *** a new formulation of the method is based on a parametric expression of cable *** computed kinematic limits can then be incorporated into any trajectory planning *** method is developed with reference to a hybrid multi-body cable robot topology which can be functionally advantageous but worsen the problem of keeping feasible tensions in the cables both in static and dynamic *** definition of statically feasible workspace is also introduced to identify the positions where static equilibrium can be maintained with feasible ***,some aspects related to the practical implementation of the method are discussed.
