We present a case report of a patient with a suspicious ileal carcinoid tumour. Clinical examination as well as computer tomograghy (CT) scan suggested a tumour. Octeotride scan showed uptake in the same bowel loop reported as pathological in CT. The patient underwent surgery and biopsy which reported Crohn’s disease (CD). The interest in the case is due to the fact that this is, to the best of our knowledge, the second report of Crohn’sdisease as a cause of false positive octeotride scan. Unfortunately, no somatostatin recptors could be found in the sample, so further studies should be performed.

Toughening of Immiscible rPS/SAN Blends by SEBS Elastomers: Properties and Morphology

In this research, an attempt was made to improve compatibility in a polymer blend composed of incompatible constituents, namely, recycled polystyrene (rPS) and polystyrene-co-acrylonitrile (SAN), through the addition of a compatibilizer. The compatibilizing agent, styrene-ethylenebutadiene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS), was added to the polymer blend in ratios of 5 and 10 wt%. For this purpose, blends of rPS and SAN at different ratios, without and with varying concentrations of compatibilizer, were prepared by melt blending using a co-rotating twin-screwextruder. Mechanical properties including tensile and impact strength, rheological properties (RPA), thermal behaviour (DSC) and morphological characteristics (SEM) were evaluated. According to the results obtained by complex viscosity, the blends behave as a pseudoplastic fluid. The results showed that the addition of SEBS increased the Izod impact strength and the elongation at break and decreased the tensile strength and tensile modulus. rPS/SAN blend modified with SEBS had better mechanical properties than the rPS/SAN alloy. SEM photographs revealed that the SEBS was not only distributed in the SAN phase but also distributed in rPS phase in rPS/SAN/SEBS blend. Furthermore, DSC analysis for blends of rPS/SAN gave a good indication of the improvement on miscibility for most compositions. SEM micrographs of tensile fracture surfaces indicated that the formation of the co-continuous phase and the improvement of interface adhesion are the most important reasons for the excellent tensile properties of the rPS/SAN/SEBS blends. Within the range of analysed compositions, the morphologies investigated by SEM are typical of immiscible blends.

Identifying genetic variants that contribute to phenotypic variation is expected to provide insights into the etiology of complex traits. Here we show how combining genetic mapping in an outbred population of rats with sequence data from the progenitors of the population made it possible to identify causal variants and genes for a large number of phenotypes. We identified 355 genomic loci contributing to 122 measures relevant to six models of disease, including fear-related behaviors and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. At 35 of those loci we identified the responsible gene, and in some cases, the responsible variant.

Cued aversive classical conditioning in humans: The role of trait-anxiety

No study so far has specifically addressed the influence of individual differences in trait-anxiety on aversive classical conditioning as indexed by the startle reflex response. We compared the startle reflex responses between participants classified as high (n = 25) and low (n = 26) in trait-anxiety while undergoing a single-cue aversive classical conditioning procedure. High trait-anxiety group showed a greater startle response to the CS relative to the ITI at the post-acquisition compared with the pre-acquisition phase. Low trait-anxiety group did not show such a clear pattern of conditioning, and results from this group seem to be concealed by differences in the startle responses to the CS and the ITI during the pre-acquisition phase. However, a post-hoc analysis in which such differences at pre-conditioning were removed showed no conditioning effects in low trait-anxiety participants. Taking together, these results suggest differences between high and low trait-anxiety groups in the acquisition of the CS-US association. However, further research should clarify the unexpected pattern of responses shown by low trait-anxiety group.

The objective of this paper relies on the establishment of the sampling moment and the nutritional state of the species Conilon coffee （Coffea canephora） cultivated in Cambisoils. The effect of different rates of nitrogen fertilization was also studied in the leaves concentrations of N, at randomized complete block designs （N0= 0; N1 = 50; N2 = 100; N3 = 150 and N4 = 200 ***^-1 of N） in presence of P （40 ***^-1 of P2O5） and K （160 ***^-1 of K2O）, with four replicates. The samples were carried out in the months of March （flower blossoming stage）, June （fruits growing stage）, September （grain development） and December （maturation） in all treatments. Foliar analysis carried out in the month of June （fruits growing stage） for the purpose of establishing critical nutrient range values for N, settling down approaches of interpretation of the same one for the Conilon coffee plantations on Cambisoils. The biggest percentages in the yields are obtained with leaves containing N between 2.80% and 3.10%, a value below 2.80% N which they associated with indicative percentages of stable maximum yield that did not surpass the limits of the adequate nutrients supply.

The research was carried out to study the effect of varying certain ecological conditions in the coffee through the implementation of different agronomic practices such as regulation of the shade, ground cover and rehabilitation of plantations on the populations of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari （Coleoptera： Curculionidae）, it was also evaluated the influence of these conditions in the introduction and transfer of new variants of application of the fungus Beauveria bassiana （Balsamo） Vuillemin. The results showed that the pest damage was lower under a system of sustainable coffee, designed after the restoration of the population density of coffee, conducting systematic pruning and plant health, sanitation of the forest, shade management to double stratum with scattered light intensity of 60-70% and a combination of systems of denominated handling of weeds （Strip weeding - Ring weeding）, it was found that under these conditions the technical effectiveness of the fungus B. bassiana was higher compared with applications made in the trees less enlightened, being more advantageous to spray the foliage four times with a frequency of 40 days from 60 days to peak flowering with positive economic indicators even when used as single biological control strategy against the coffee berry borer.

The genetically heterogeneous NIH-HS rat stock has been characterized by its response to anxiety- and fear-inducing situations, thus leading to the conclusion that they are a rather anxious and passive coping type of rats. Taking advantage of these profiles, and knowing that they show very poor performance in the two-way active (shuttle box) escape/avoidance task, we have tested NIH-HS rats (n = 80) in the forced swimming test (FST) as well as we have studied escape response deficits (i.e. response failures) of the same animals in the two-way shuttle box task. They were also tested for anxiety in the elevated zero-maze. The goal of such a study was that of investigating whether there are associations or relationships among helplessness-like or passive coping responses between both models of depression, i.e. the FST and the helplessness-like escape deficits in the shuttle box task. The results for the first time show associations among responses from both depression models and that selecting rats for displaying extreme (active or passive) responses in one of the models predict in a coherent manner (according to the hypothesis) their behaviour in the other model. These findings are discussed in the context of the concurrent validity of both models of depression as well as concerning the possible relevance of NIH-HS rats as a tool for future studies on this field.

The “National Institutes of Health” genetically heterogeneous (NIH-HS) rat stock was created in the 1980s through an eight-way cross of as much as possible separate inbred rat strains (i.e. the MR/N, WN/N, WKY/N, M520/N, F344/N, ACI/N, BN/SsN and BUF/N strains) which were readily available at that time. Hansen and Spuhler [1] developed a more naturalistic, genetically heterogeneous rat stock with the aim of optimizing the distribution of genotypic frequencies and recombination and under the hypothesis that the NIH-HS stock could yield a broad-range distribution of responses (broader than commonly used laboratory rat strains) to experimental conditions, and thus serve as a base population for selection studies. Along the last decade, in a series of studies we have phenotypically characterized the NIH-HS rat stock (a colony exists at our laboratory since 2004) for their anxiety/fearfulness profiles (using a battery of both unconditioned and conditioned tests/tasks), as well as regarding their stress-induced hormonal responses, coping style under inescapable stress and spatial learning ability. We have also compared the phenotypic profiles of NIH-HS rats with those of the low anxious RHA-I and the high anxious RLA-I rat strains. The NIH-HS rat stock is, as a population, a rather anxious type of rat, with predominantly reactive/passive coping style in unlearned and learned anxiety/fear tests, and elevated stress hormone responses (as well as enhanced “depressive” symptoms in the forced swimming test). Genetic studies currently under way have thus far revealed that the genetically heterogeneous NIH-HS rat stock constitutes a unique tool for fine mapping of QTL (for multiple behavioural and biological complex traits) to megabase resolution levels, thus enabling candidate gene identification.
