The research aimed to evaluate the absorption and removal capacity of Cu, Pb, Fe and Zn from Scirpus californicus for potential use in the remediation of polluted aquatic environments. Initially, Scirpus californicus plants were conditioned in 1.5 liters of 10 ppm Cu solution at a pH of 2.3 as well as Pb, Fe and Zn. Subsequently, the concentration of heavy metals in the root-rhizome, submerged stem and aerial stem was determined;the solution and pH were also analyzed. The greatest capacity of absorption and accumulation occurred in the root-rhizome reaching values for Cu of 491.84, Pb of 739.43, Zn of 830.71 and Fe of 2624.72 mg/kg dry followed by the submerged stem and low values for the aerial stem. The removal efficiency of Cu from the solution was 52.10%, Pb 53.50%, Fe 48.00% and Zn 50.20%. It is concluded that the contact time has a significant effect on the absorption and removal capacity of the metals under study.

The cellular prion protein (PrPC) expression was analyzed by western-blot in the rat, in two different dimorphic brain areas such as the anterior hypothalamic and the preoptic areas. In both cases, the PrPC expression was increased in males, implying a sexual dimorphism for the PrPC protein. The study was also made in other two brain areas, frontal cortex and hyppocampus (a clearly dimorphic area);in this case, mice of different ages of both sexes were used. In both brain areas analyzed, although the PrPC expression was increased with age until the adult age (38 weeks), it was decreased in aged animals (56 weeks) in both sexes. The PrPC expression in mouse hippocampus was predominant in males in comparison to females. Moreover, the non-glycosylated band was increased with age and this increase was parallel with the increase observed for the glycolsylated band. The non-glycosylated band increases more in aged females. Altogether, these data suggest that PrP in rodents, in the brain areas analyzed, has a dimorphism role. As we discuss in the present study and in relation to previous studies of our group these data could be extrapolated to humans (specially in Alzhemer disease cases).

AIM To evaluate the long-term outcome of an acute hemodynamic response-guided protocol in which acute responders to intravenous propranolol received traditional nonselective beta-blockers(NSBBs) and acute nonresponders received *** Retrospective review of a protocol for primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding guided by the acute hemodynamic response to intravenous propranolol. Fifty-two acute responders treated with traditional NSBB(i.e. propranolol or nadolol) were compared with 24 acute nonresponders receiving carvedilol. A second hemodynamic study was performed in 27 and 13 patients, respectively. The primary endpoint was development of first or further decompensation. Secondary endpoints included death from any cause, association between acute and chronic hemodynamic response, and baseline clinical and laboratory variables related to the acute hemodynamic *** Acute responders and acute nonresponders presented similar 1, 2, and 3-year probabilities of first decompensation(NSBB: 0%, 13.7%, 26.1% vs carvedilol: 0%, 20%, 20%, P = 0.968) or further decompensation(21.2%, 26.1%, 40.9% vs 21.2%, 50.0%, 50.0%, P = 0.525). A previous episode of hepatic encephalopathy was the only independent predictor of decompensation [hazard ratio(95% confidence interval): 8.03(2.76-23.37)]. Mortality rates were similar in acute responders and acute nonresponders with compensated(P = 0.428) or decompensated cirrhosis(P = 0.429). No clinical, laboratory, endoscopic or hemodynamic parameter predicted the acute hemodynamic response. AIM: To determine the hypothesis that inflating the balloons in the duodenal papilla determines changes in the biochemical markers of ***: Four groups of pigs were used: Group papilla(GP), the overtube's balloon was inflated in the area of the papilla; GP + double balloon enteroscopy(GP + DBE), the overtube's balloon was kept inflated in the area of the papilla for 20 min before a DBE; Group DBE(GDBE), DBE was carried out after insuring the balloon's inflation far from the pancreatic papilla; and Group control(GC). Serum concentrations of amylase, lipase and C-reactive protein(CRP) were evaluated. Pancreases were processed for histopathology ***: Main changes occurred 24 h after the procedure compared with baseline levels. Amylase levels increased significantly in GP(59.2% higher) and were moderately higher in groups GP + DBE and GDBE(22.7% and 20%, respectively). Lipase increased in GP and GP + DBE, whereas it hardly changed in GDBE and in GC. CRP increased significantly in GP, GP + DBE and GDBE, while no changes were reported for GC. No statistically significant difference between groups GP and GP + DBE was found for the histopathological findings, except for vacuolization and necrosis of the pancreatic parenchyma that was higher in GP than in GP + ***: The manipulation of the duodenal papilla by the inflated overtube's balloon during DBE causes pancreatic structural damage and increased biochemical markers associated with pancreatitis.

The ability of accurate and scalable mobile device recognition is critically important for mobile network operators and ISPs to understand their customers' behaviours and enhance their user *** this paper,we propose a novel method for mobile device model recognition by using statistical information derived from large amounts of mobile network traffic ***,we create a Jaccardbased coefficient measure method to identify a proper keyword representing each mobile device model from massive unstructured textual HTTP access *** handle the large amount of traffic data generated from large mobile networks,this method is designed as a set of parallel algorithms,and is implemented through the MapReduce framework which is a distributed parallel programming model with proven low-cost and high-efficiency *** using real data sets show that our method can accurately recognise mobile client models while meeting the scalability and producer-independency requirements of large mobile network *** show that a 91.5% accuracy rate is achieved for recognising mobile client models from 2 billion records,which is dramatically higher than existing solutions.

The goal of this study was to analyze microbial mats and biofilms from the lower supratidal area of the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina), and explore their relationship with sediments and other physical forcings. Thirteen monthly sediment samples (uppermost 10 mm) were taken and their composition and abundance in microorganisms was determined by microscopy. Physical parameters (solar radiation and sediment temperature at -5 cm) were recorded with a frequency of 5 minutes by a coastal environmental monitoring station. Additionally, sediment grain size and moisture content were determined for distinct layers in the uppermost20 mm, and the rate of inundation of the supratidal area was estimated from tidal gauge measurements. There were significant seasonal differences in the biomass of the microphytobenthic groups considered (filamentous cyanobacteria and epipelic diatoms), with the former consistently making up >70% of the total biomass. The relationships between microphytobenthos and sediment temperature and solar radiation fitted to linear regressions, and consistently showed an inverse relationship between microphytobenthic abundance and either one of the physical parameters. The granulometric analysis revealed a unimodal composition of muddy sediments, which were vertically and spatially homogeneous;additionally, there were significant seasonal differences in water content loss with drying conditions prevailing in the summer. Several Microbially-Induced Sedimentary Structures (MISS) were identified in the supratidal zone such as shrinkage cracks, erosional pockets, gas domes, photosynthetic domes, mat chips and sieve-like surfaces. In contrast to studies from analogous environments in the Northern Hemisphere, we found reduced microphytobenthic biomass in summer, which were explained by increased evaporation/desiccation rates as a consequence of increased radiation, despite frequent tidal inundation. AIM： To evaluate the effect of double-balloon enteros- copy （DBE） on pancreas histology and levels of pancre- atic enzymes. METHODS： Conventional upper gastrointestinal endos- copy was performed on five control pigs. Oral DBE was performed with an EN-450T5 enteroscope on 20 pigs. Two experimental groups （10 pigs each） were defined according to DBE duration： 90 rain for Group 1 and 140 min for Group 2. During oral insertion, the balloons were not inflated in the descending part of the duodenum to avoid the minor duodenal papilla. Serum amy- lase, lipase and C-reactive protein （CRP） levels were monitored before the procedure and repeated every 30 min until the exploration was finished, as well as 24 h and 7 d after. After the procedure and for a total of 7 d, the pigs were observed twice a day for signs of de- creased activity, irritability, vomiting or anorexia. Gross and microscopic examination of the pancreas was per- formed on day 7. RESULTS： All animals tolerated DBE without clini- cal manifestations of acute pancreatitis. Experimental groups had higher levels of enzymes than the control group at 24 h. Throughout the exploration, the amylase levels increased significantly above the baseline 24 h after DBE, although the increase was not statistically significant and did not reach 20% of the baseline. An increase in lipase and CRP was observed at 24 h after the procedure, although by day 7, all enzymatic lev- els had returned to baseline. No differences between Groups 1 and 2 were found for any enzyme and sam- pling site during and after the procedure. Similarly, no correlation between insertion depth and enzyme levels was observed. Direct in situ and post-removal inspec- tion of the pancreas did not show any evidence of fluid collection, abscesses or hemorrhage. Histological examination of the pancreas from Groups 1 and 2 re- vealed the existence of focal areas （0.14-0.26 mm2） of ischemic necrosis in 47.4% of the animals. Heavy metals are transferred from the abiotic environment to living organisms, accumulate in food, contaminate the food chain, and are an important route of human exposure involving a potential health risk. In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Fe, Pb, Zn and As) in agricultural soils and tubers of Solanum tuberosum spp. andigena (native potato) were evaluated. Also, an assessment of the health risk associated with the daily intake by the local population was performed in the four districts of the department of Junín, between altitudes of 3800 m to 4200 m. The heavy metals concentrations in soils with native potato cultivation followed the following decreasing order of Fe > Zn > Pb > As > Cd, with values below national standards. The heavy metals content in native potatoes was below the limits recommended by international standards with the exception of Pb. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) for the two native potato varieties in decreasing order was Zn > Cd > Pb > As > Fe, all less than 0.5. The estimated daily intake of metals (EDIM) in adults and children through the consumption of native potatoes was higher for Fe and Zn. The threshold carcinogenic risk values (TCR) for As exceeded the safety limits 1 × 10-4. It is concluded that the residents in the four high Andean localities would be exposed to carcinogenic adverse health effects associated with the intake of native potatoes. It is important to monitor the concentration of As and other heavy metals in the Andean soils and crops in order to implement a soil and crop management program to ensure food quality.

Royal palm tree peroxidase (RPTP) has been isolated to homogeneity from leaves of Roystonea regia palm trees. The enzyme purification steps included homogenization, (NH4)SO4 precipitation, extraction of palm leaf colored compounds and consecutive chromatography on Phenyl-Sepharose, TSK-Gel DEAE-5PW and Superdex-200. The novel peroxidase was characterized as having a molecular weight of 48.2 ± 3.0 kDa and an isoelectric point pI 5.4 ± 0.1. The enzyme forms dimers in solution with approximate molecular weight of 92 ± 2 kDa. Here we investigated the steady-state kinetic mechanism of the H2O2-supported oxidation of different organic substrates by RPTP. The results of the analysis of the initial rates vs. H2O2 and reducing substrate concentrations were seen to be consistent with a substrate-inhibited Ping-Pong Bi-Bi reaction mechanism. The phenomenological approach used expresses the peroxidase Ping-Pong mechanism in the form of the Michaelis-Menten equation and affords an interpretation of the effects in terms of the kinetic parameters KmH2O2, KmAH2, kcat, KSIH2O2, KSIAH2 and of the microscopic rate constants k1 and k3 of the shared three-step peroxidase catalytic cycle. Furthermore, the concentration and time-dependences and the mechanism of the suicide inactivation of RPTP by hydrogen peroxide were studied kinetically with guaiacol as co-substrate. The turnover number (r) of H2O2 required to complete the inactivation of the enzyme was 2154 ± 100 and the apparent rate constants of catalysis 185 s–1 and 18 s–1.
