Removal of nitrogen in wastewater before discharge into receiving water courses is an important consideration in treatment ***,nitrogen removal efficiency is usually limited due to the low carbon/nitrogen（C/N） ratio.A common solution is to add external carbon sources,but amount of liquid is difficult to ***,a combined wood-chip-framework substrate（with wood,slag and gravel） as a slow-release carbon source was constructed in baffled subsurface-flow constructed wetlands to overcome the *** show that the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen（NH_4~＋-N）,total nitrogen（TN） and chemical oxygen demand（COD） could reach 37.5%-85%,57.4%-86%,32.4%-78%,respectively,indicating the combined substrate could diffuse sufficient oxygen for the nitrification process（slag and gravel zone） and provide carbon source for denitrification process（wood-chip zone）.The nitrification and denitrification were determined according to the location of slag/gravel and wood-chip,*** removal was efficient at the steady phase before a shock loading using slag-wood-gravel combined substrate because of nitrification-denitrification process,while nitrogen removal was efficient under a shock loading with wood-slag-gravel combined substrate because of ANAMMOX *** study provides a new idea for wetland treatment of high-strength nitrogen wastewater.

We use a semi-analytic galaxy formation model to study the co-evolution of supermassive black holes(SMBHs) with their host *** the coalescence of SMBHs is not important,the quasarmode accretion induced by mergers plays a dominant role in the growth of *** play a more important role in the growth of SMBH host galaxies than in the SMBH *** is the combined contribution from quasar mode accretion and mergers to the SMBH growth and the combined contribution from starburst and mergers to their host galaxy growth that determine the observed scaling relation between the SMBH masses and their host galaxy *** also find that mergers are more important in the growth of SMBH host galaxies compared to normal galaxies which share the same stellar mass range as the SMBH host galaxies.

Simulation of municipal solid waste gasification for syngas production in fixed bed reactors

This study proposes a model of syngas production from municipal solid waste (MSW) gasification with air in fixed bed reactors. The model (using Aspen plus simulator) is used to predict the results of MSW gasification and to provide some process fundamentals concerning syngas production from MSW gasification. The effects of gasification temperature, air equiva- lence ratio and moisture concentration on the composition of syngas, lower heating value (LHV) of syngas, heat conversion efficiency, and carbon conversion are discussed. The results indicate that higher temperature improves gasification, and higher air equivalence ratio increases the carbon conversion while decreasing syngas LHV. Heat conversion efficiency increases and reaches the maximum and then decreases with the increase of air equivalence ratio. Higher moisture concentration increases the carbon conversion and increases the heat conversion efficiency at lower ratios. Higher temperature and a lower equivalence ratio are favorable for obtaining a higher LHV of syngas at the same moisture concentration.

A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

Improving the primary steam parameters is one of the most direct ways to improve the cycle efficiency of a powergeneration system. In the present study, the typical problem connected to the excessively high superheat degree ofextraction steam in an ultra-supercritical (USC) double-reheat unit is considered. Using a 1000 MW power plantas an example, two systems (case 1 and case 2) are proposed, both working in combination with a regenerativesteam turbine. The thermal performances of these two systems are compared with that of the original systemthrough a heat balance method and an exergy balance strategy. The results reveal that the two coupled systemscan significantly reduce the superheat degree of extraction steam, turbine heat rate, and coal consumption of theunit and improve the energy utilization efficiency. These results will provide useful theoretical guidance to futureinvestigators wishing to address the general problem relating to energy conservation and modelling of the coupledextraction steam regenerative system of USC double-reheat units.

Optimal timing of preoperative intravitreal anti-VEGF injection for proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients

AIM: To analyze concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and fibrosis-related factors in vitreous fluid of proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR) patients pretreated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections(IVI) at different time periods prior to pars plana vitrectomy(PPV), and their correlation with the degree of vitreoretinal fibrosis and explore the optimal timing of preoperative ***: The prospective case-control study from January 2019 to July 2020 included 31 eyes with PDRrelated complications(PDR group) and 21 eyes with nondiabetic ocular disease(control group) requiring PPV. PDR eyes were divided into four groups based on timing of PPV: 3 d after IVI(3-day group);5 d after IVI(5-day group);7 or more days after IVI(≥7-day group);and no IVI. Vitreous fluid samples(0.5-1.0 m L) were collected prior to switching on the infusion before routine 23-G PPV. Concentrations of VEGF, basic fibroblast growth factor(b FGF), periostin(PN), interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α were measured by immunoassay, and concentration differences for each cytokine were compared among the groups. The degree of vitreoretinal fibrosis was graded intraoperatively, and the correlation between the changes in cytokine levels and the severity of vitreoretinal fibrosis was analyzed by univariate ordinal logistic regression ***: PDR eyes without IVI had significantly higher VEGF, b FGF, PN, and IL-6 concentrations than nondiabetic eyes(all P<0.05), and had a significantly higher concentration of VEGF(P<0.05) and a significantly lower concentration of IL-8(P<0.05) than PDR eyes with IVI. Statistically significant differences were also observed for concentrations of VEGF, b FGF, PN, IL-6, and IL-8 among 3-day, 5-day, and ≥7-day groups(all P<0.05);meanwhile there was no significant difference in TNF-α among groups(P=0.226). Quality and readability of online information resources on insomnia

The internet is a major source for health information. An increasing number of people, including patients with insomnia, search for remedies online; however, little is known about the quality of such information. This study aimed to evaluate the quality and readability of insomnia-related online information. Google was used as the search engine, and the top websites on insomnia that met the inclusion criteria were evaluated for quality and readability. The analyzed websites belonged to nonprofit, commercial, or academic organizations and institutions such as hospitals and universities. Insomnia-related websites typically included definitions （85%）, causes and risk factors （100%）, symptoms （95%）, and treatment options （90%）. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia （CBT-I） was the most commonly recommended approach for insomnia treatment, and sleep drugs are frequently mentioned. The overall quality of the websites on insomnia is moderate, but all the content exceeded the recommended reading ease levels. Concerns that must be addressed to increase the quality and trustworthiness of online health information include sharing metadata, such as authorship, time of creation and last update, and conflicts of interest; providing evidence for reliability; and increasing the readability for a layman audience.

The crosstalk between signaling and metabolic pathways has been known to play key roles in human diseases and plant biological *** integration of signaling and metabolic pathways can provide an essential reference framework for crosstalk ***,current databases use distinct structures to present signaling and metabolic pathways,which leads to the chaos in the integrated ***,for the metabolic pathways,the metabolic enzymes and the reactions are disconnected by the current widely accepted layout of edges and nodes,which hinders the topological analysis of the integrated ***,we propose a novel“meta-pathway”structure,which uses the uniformed structure to display the signaling and metabolic pathways,and resolves the difficulty in linking the metabolic enzymes to the reactions *** compiled a comprehensive collection of global integrative networks(GINs)by merging the meta-pathways of 7077 *** demonstrated the assembly of the signaling and metabolic pathways using the GINs of four species—human,mouse,Arabidopsis,and *** all of the nodes were assembled into one major network for each of the four species,which provided opportunities for robust crosstalk and topological analysis,and knowledge graph construction.
