Nature-based recreation for the elderly in urban areas:assessing opportunities and demand as planning support

Background:With elderly people comprising a growing share of the population,landscape planners need to consider their specific requirements to enhance the opportunities for them to engage in nature-based recreation(NBR).However,few studies have spatially assessed the recreation potential,demand,and opportunities for elderly people in ***,this paper aimed to spatially model and investigate the NBR opportunities for and demand of elderly people in urban areas.A spatial framework based on the ESTIMAP recreation model was developed,considering special factors to better reflect elderly people’s preferences regarding NBR at the city *** particular,NBR opportunities were assessed considering landscape aesthetics,various types of facilities,and *** street network was used to understand elderly people’s walking behaviours regarding green spaces and related ***:A case study in Hannover,Germany,demonstrated the applicability of the proposed *** results illustrate the spatial heterogeneity of recreation options for the *** parts of Hannover’s green spaces offer high recreation opportunities for elderly *** of the existing green spaces lack diverse landscape compo-nents and sufficient supply of facilities,resulting in a compromise to aesthetics and recreational ***:The proposed method contributes to research on spatial planning and environmental justice by incorporating vulnerable groups’preferences and needs in spatially assessing *** planning implications highlight pocket gardens and greenways connecting communities and parks as development opportunities in the city.

Enhanced electrokinetic remediation of cadmium-contaminated natural clay using organophosphonates in comparison with EDTA

Soil contamination by metals is a worldwide environmental problem. Electrokinetic extraction is a promising technology for in-situ remediation of contaminated soils of low hydraulic permeability. However, the extraction of metals is usually hindered by the high buffer capacity of natural soils. Organophosphonates are strong metal chelates as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA) which has been widely studied in the enhancement of electrokinetic remediation. In this study, batch desorption experiments and bench-scale electrokinetic extraction experiments were carried out to study the effect of two organophosphonates, i.e.,(nitrilotrimethylene)triphosphonate(NTMP) &(ethylenedinitrilo)-tetramethylenephosphonate(EDTMP), on the extraction of cadmium from a natural clay in comparison with EDTA. Results of the batch desorption experiments showed that more than 75% of the sorbed cadmium could be dissolved into solution using 0.1 mol·L^(-1) organophosphonates or EDTA in the wide p H range of 1–11. Results of the electrokinetic extraction experiments showed that the cadmium spiked in the specimen migrated towards the anode with the enhancement of NTMP,EDTMP, and EDTA under a constant voltage gradient of approximately 1.0 V·cm-1. Although cadmium mobilization enhanced by EDTA was more efficient than that by the organophosphonates, accumulation of cadmium was observed in the vicinity of the anode. The average removal efficiencies of cadmium from the soil after approximately 5 days of electrokinetic extraction enhanced by 0.1 mol·L-1 NTMP(22.8%) and EDTMP(22.4%) were higher than that by 0.1 mol·L^(-1) EDTA(15.1%).

Synthesis of a novel magnetic biomass-MOF composite for the efficient removal of phosphates:Adsorption mechanism and characterization study

The adverse effects of eutrophication have prompted the use of various remediation techniques for phosphate(PO_(4)^(3-))removal owing to it being the major causative ***,the influence of different solvents and ratios of 2-aminoterepthalicacid on the efficiency of magnetic biomass metal-organic framework composites based on the in situ growth of NH_(2)-MIL-101(Fe)onto magnetized peanut husks towards PO_(4)^(3-)removal was assessed via the adsorption *** magnetic biocomposite labelled as MPN@NH2-MIL-101(Fe)exhibited the best efficiency owing to its mesoporous structures and presence of abundant oxygen and nitrogen possessing functional *** results confirmed MPN@NH2-MIL-101(Fe)to have a high adsorption capacity of(14.0±0.3)mg·L^(-1)at a PO43-concentration of 20 mg·L^(-1)with an associated high stability within pH *** adsorption kinetics for the process was well described by both Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and was mediated by both internal diffusion and liquid film *** Temkin and Freundlich models fitted the equilibrium data well signifying occurrence of both physical and chemical adsorption on a heterogeneous *** is concluded that MPN@NH2-MIL-101(Fe)is a promising adsorbent for the effective removal of phosphate from a water body.

Extracorporeal liver support in severe alcoholic hepatitis

The severity of alcoholic hepatitis(AH) which may coexist with cirrhosis varies greatly, from asymptomatic forms which are detected in alcoholic patients without any sign of liver disease, except laboratory abnormalities, to severe forms characterised by deep jaundice, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy and low prothrombin index. In hospitalized patients the mortality could be as high as 75%. The elevated number of therapeutic proposals reported for more than forty years reveals the lack of efficacy of a particular modality. Even in the most favorable trials, the survival is already very poor and in some cases related to the development of renal failure or hepatorenal syndrome. There are some motivating reports concerning albumin dialysis as a support treatment in patients with severe AH, either alone or in combination with other pharmacological therapies. The favorable effects of albumin dialysis in patients with severe AH suggest that the procedure used alone or in combination with other therapies may have a role in this clinical condition. This will be particularly relevant to offer an alternative therapy in these patients, thus being a potential bridge to recovery or to be listed for liver transplantation.

The interplay between free electrons,light,and matter offers unique prospects for space,time,and energy resolved optical material characterization,structured light generation,and quantum information ***,we study the nanoscale features of spontaneous and stimulated electron–photon interactions mediated by localized surface plasmon resonances at the tips of a gold nanostar using electron energy-loss spectroscopy(EELS),cathodoluminescence spectroscopy(CL),and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy(PINEM).Supported by numerical electromagnetic boundary-element method(BEM)calculations,we show that the different coupling mechanisms probed by EELS,CL,and PINEM feature the same spatial dependence on the electric field distribution of the tip ***,the electron–photon interaction strength is found to vary with the incident electron velocity,as determined by the spatial Fourier transform of the electric near-field component parallel to the electron *** the tightly confined plasmonic tip resonances,our calculations suggest an optimum coupling velocity at electron energies as low as a few *** results are discussed in the context of more complex geometries supporting multiple modes with spatial and spectral *** provide fundamental insights into spontaneous and stimulated electron-light-matter interactions with key implications for research on(quantum)coherent optical phenomena at the nanoscale.

Sequestration of carbon as carbonate in the critical zone：insights from the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau

The carbon pool stored in soil carbonate is comparable to the soil organic ***,secondary calcite precipitation in supersaturated catchment could be an important,yet poorly constrained,carbon sink within the modern global carbon *** chemical analysis of some dissolved species transported by rivers,such as elevated Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios but also heavy stable Ca isotopic compositions,witness the formation of secondary calcite in rivers draining arid ***,in areas affected by active tectonics and rapid physical erosion,co-variations in the fluvial Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios could also be related to incongruent carbonate weathering ***,we present a model to assess the roles played by incongruent carbonate dissolution and secondary calcite precipitation in modern weathering *** tested and applied the model to rivers draining the Himalayan–Tibetan *** results suggest that regional aridity in the drainage basin promotes carbon sequestration as secondary carbonate but that for a given runoff,incongruent dissolution of carbonate possibly related to rapid physical erosion amplifies such *** isotopic compositions(^(13)C/^(12)C and^(18)O/^(16)O)of detrital carbonate transported by the main rivers in South and South-East Tibet imply that around 1%of the suspended material transported by those rivers corresponds to secondary carbonate and can represent between 5%and 15%of the alkalinity *** of these alkalinity transported as particulate material is,nevertheless related to the weathering of carbonate lithologies and is also subjected to dissolution prior its final storage in sedimentary ***,on glacial-interglacial timescale this will amplify the significant role of mountain weathering on climatic variations.

Impaired endothelial progenitor cells mobilization: a novel concept for reduce post-ischemia neovascularization in diabetes

Objective The aim of the present study was to explore potential mechanism underlying reduced basal circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in diabetes, and to determine how diabetes impairs ischemia-induced mobilization of bone marrow-derived EPCs. Methods Circulating c-Kit+/Sca-1+/flk-1+ EPCs and CD31bright/Annexin V+ endothelial microparticles (EMPs) were analyzed by flow cytometry in control and streptozotocin-induced diabetic C57BL/6 mice. Results Compared with nondiabetic controls, diabetic mice had lower level of circulating EPCs, higher level of plasma EMPs, and increased ratio of EMPs to EPCs. Circulating EMPs count and EPCs level were negatively associated with each other. In a hindlimb ischemia model, diabetes suppressed bone marrow-derived EPCs mobilization, accompanied by insufficient upregulaiton of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and over-activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) system. As a consequence, diabetic mice showed deficient increase of capillary density and hampered restoration of transcutaneous oxygen pressure (tcpO2) in the ischemic *** These results suggest that lower circulating EPCs level detected in diabetes may be partly attributed to consumptive loss of EPCs due to increased endothelial damage. Impairment in ischemia-induced EPCs mobilization presents a novel mechanism for defective post-ischemia neovascularization in diabetes.

Inbred animals eliminate several of the challenges of human studies and allow researchers to conduct disease research on, arguably, the most controlled model system possible.
