Temporal variability and sources of PFAS in the rio Grande,New Mexico through an arid urban area using multiple tracers and highfrequency sampling

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are ubiquitous in the environment but sources are not well defined for temporal and spatial aspects within an urban environment,and especially for an arid urban environment subject to seasonal short term high-intensity precipitation events.A focused diel sampling was conducted in the summer of 2021 to assess the temporal and spatial variability of PFAS in the rio Grande near Albuquerque,New Mexico and showed an order of magnitude increase of PFAS as it flows through the Albuquerque urban *** samples were collected at two different locations on the rio Grande in addition to wastewater treatment plant(WWTP)effluent that discharges directly to the rio Grande between the sampling ***-term high-intensity precipitation events occurred during the study period and mobilized PFAS from urban *** organic matter composed of tryptophan-like organic substances and refined fuel and fuel byproducts,characteristic of an urban signature,were also related to the precipitation *** PFAS in discharge from the WWTP was consistent over a 24-h period with slight differences in some *** presence on the rio Grande downstream of the WWTP was evidenced by a gadolinium anomaly as well as increases in several other trace elements,total dissolved nitrogen,and fluorescence indicators,in addition to *** varied depending on source contribution,where urban runoff was associated with PFoA,PFoS,and PFBA,whereas PFHxA and PFPeA were associated with wastewater *** addition,passive polar organic chemical integrative samplers(PoCIS)using hydrophilic-lipid balance(HLB)sorption media were deployed for a month at two locations on the rio Grande to assess longer term PFAS *** PoCIS results show some compounds(PFPeA and PFHpA)were greater than the average concentration from discrete samples,whereas other compounds(PFHxA,PFoA,PFDA,and PFNA)were lower in the PoCIS,and PFoS was very simila

Sexual Behaviour and Contraceptive Usage of Secondary School Adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria

objective To determine the prevalence and pattern of sexual activity as well as the contraceptive practices among the selected secondary school adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the selected senior secondary school students in Ibadan, following a stratified multistage random sampling technique. results There were 695 respondents out of which the females constituted 51% and the males were 49%. Less than one third （28.3%） of the respondents have had previous sexual exposure at the time of the study. The median age of sexual debut among the sexually exposed was 15 years in both the males and the females. Bivariate analysis of sociodemographic characteristics of respondents with previous sexual exposure showed that, sex, religion, father＇s and mother＇s educational background and level of class were statistically significant（P〈0. 001）. Further analysis using logistic regression model revealed that male respondents were 3 times more likely than females （95% CI 1.92-4.56） to have had sexual experience while those whose mother had tertiary educational background were less likely to have had previous sexual experience compared with those with secondary and lower educational background （or= 1.76, 95% CI 1.11-2.77）. of all the sociodemographic characteristics of respondents considered with the age of sexual partners using bivariate analysis showed that only level of class was significant （P=0. 018）. Less than half of the sexually active males （44.2%） were using various methods of contraception, while 54.4% of the sexually active females were using different types of modern methods.Conclusion It is quite obvious that risky sexual behaviours are in practice among the secondary school students studied and by extension in the country. It therefore means that reproductive health issues especially concerning the adolescents will have to be openly discussed by all with our youths while abstinence/chastity should be

Percutaneous nephrostomy versus ureteral stent in hydronephrosis secondary to obstructive urolithiasis:A systematic review and meta-analysis

objective: To assess if there is a preferable intervention between retrograde ureteral stent (rUS) and percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) tube, in cases of upper urinary tract stone obstruction with complications requiring urgent drainage, by evaluating outcomes regarding urinary symptoms, quality of life (QoL), spontaneous stone passage, and length of hospital stays, since there is no literature stating the superiority of one modality over the ***: We searched MEDLINE and other sources for relevant articles in June 2019 without any date restrictions or filters applied. The selection was done first by the title and abstract screening and then by full-text assessment for eligibility. only randomized controlled trials or cohort studies in patients with hydronephrosis secondary to obstructive urolithiasis that presented comparative data between PCN and rUS placement concerning at least one of the defined outcome measures were included. Lastly, MEDLINE database and PubMed platform were screened again using the same terms, from June 2019 until November ***: of 556 initial articles, seven were included in this review. Most works were considered of moderate-to-high quality. Three studies regarding QoL showed a tendency against stenting, even though only one demonstrated statistically significant negative impact on overall health state. Two works reported significantly more post-intervention urinary symptoms in stenting patients. one article found that PCN is a significant predictor of spontaneous stone passage, when adjusted for stone size and location. Findings on length of hospital stays were not consistent among ***: PCN appears to be the intervention better tolerated, with less impact on the patient’s perceived QoL and less post-operative urinary symptoms, in comparison with rUS. Nevertheless, further studies with larger samples and a randomized controlled design are suggested.

Medical bone implant magnesium(Mg)alloys are subjected to both corrosive environments and complex loads in the human *** increasing number of hyperglycemic and diabetic patients in recent years has brought new challenges to the fatigue performance of Mg ***,it is significant to study the corrosion fatigue(CF)behavior of medical Mg alloys in glucose-containing simulated body fluids for their clinical ***,the corrosion and fatigue properties of extruded Mg-Zn-Zr-Nd alloy in Hank’s balanced salt solution(HBSS)containing different concentrations(1 g/L and 3 g/L)of glucose were *** average grain size of the alloy is about 5μm,which provides excellent overall mechanical *** conditional fatigue strength of the alloy was 127 MPa in air and 88 MPa and 70 MPa in HBSS containing 1 g/L glucose and 3 g/L glucose,*** crack initiation points for alloys in air are oxide inclusions and in solution are corrosion *** corrosion rate of the alloy is high at the beginning,and decreases as the surface corrosion product layer thickens with the increase of immersion *** corrosion products of the alloy are mainly Mg(oH)_(2),Mgo and a small amount of ca-P *** electrochemical results indicated that the corrosion rate of the alloys gradually decreased with increasing immersion time,but the corrosion tendency of the alloy was greater in HBSS containing 3 g/L *** the one hand,glucose accelerates the corrosion process by adsorbing large amounts of aggressive Cl^(-)*** the other hand,glucose will be oxidized to form gluconic acid,and then reacts with Mg(oH)_(2) and Mgo to form Mg gluconate,which destroys the corrosion product film and leads to the aggravation of corrosion and the accumulation of fatigue damage.

Sol-gel borate bioactive glasses(BGs)are promising ion-releasing biomaterials for wound healing ***,we report the synthesis of a series of binary B_(2)o_(3)-cao borate BGs(cao ranging from 50 to 90mol%)using a sol-gel-based *** influence of cao content in B_(2)o_(3)-cao borate BG on morphology,structure and ion release behavior was investigated in *** dissolution(ion release)and crystallization could be observed in borate BGs when cao content increased,while the morphology was not significantly altered by increasing cao *** results evidenced that the ion release behavior of borate BGs could be tailored by tuning the B_(2)o_(3)/cao molar *** also evaluated the in vitro cytotoxicity,hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities of borate *** was validated for all borate ***,borate BGs exhibited composition-dependent hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic ***,higher contents of ca in borate BGs facilitated hemostatic activity,while higher contents of B_(2)o_(3) were beneficial for pro-angiogenic *** synthesized sol-gel-derived borate BGs are promising materials for developing advanced wound healing dressings,given their fast ion release behavior and favorable hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities.

ca19-9 antigen levels can distinguish between benign and malignant pancreaticobiliary disease

BACKGroUND:ca19-9 is a carbohydrate tumor-associated antigen which is frequently upregulated in pancreatobiliary ***,it may also be elevated in patients with jaundice in the absence of a tumor due to biliary obstruction,and in other non-hepato-pancreatico-biliary *** study aimed to evaluate whether ca19-9 levels could accurately differentiate between benign and malignant pancreatobiliary ***:All patients referred to a single surgeon for investigation of pancreaticobiliary disease in 2003 in whom a firm diagnosis had been established were *** malignant disease,a histological diagnosis was required but for benign disease a firm radiological diagnosis was deemed *** patients were divided into 4 categories:pancreatic adenocarcinoma(Pca);cholangiocarcinoma(Cca);chronic pancreatitis(CP)and biliary calculous disease(calc).Bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase levels corresponding to the point of assessment of ca19-9 were also ***:Final diagnoses were made of pancreatic adenocarcinoma(Pca,n=73),cholangiocarcinoma(Cca,n=19),ampullary carcinoma(Amp,n=7),neuroendocrine carcinoma(Neu,n=4),duodenal carcinoma(Duo,n=3),chronic pancreatitis(CP,n=115),and biliary calculous disease(calc,n=27).Median ca19-9 levels(U/ml)were:Pca,653;Cca,408;Duo,403;calc,27;CP,19;Neu,10.5;Amp,8(reference range:0-37).The ca19-9 levels were significantly greater for malignant than for benign disease,could differentiate Pca from Cca/Duo,and were significantly higher in unresectable than in resectable *** sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value(PPV)and negative predictive value(NPV)for ca19-9 were 84.9%,69.7%,67.7%and 86.1%,respectively.A roC analysis provided an area under the curve for ca19-9 of 0.871(0.820-0.922),giving an optimal ca19-9 of 70.5 U/ml for differentiating benign from malignant *** this cut-off,the sensitivity was 82.1%,while specificity,PPV and NPV improved to 85.9%,81.3%and 86.5%,*** sta

Soil metabolomics is an emerging approach for profiling diverse small molecule metabolites,i.e.,metabolomes,in the *** metabolites,including fatty acids,amino acids,lipids,organic acids,sugars,and volatile organic compounds,often contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen,phosphorus,and sulfur and are directly linked to soil biogeochemical cycles driven by soil *** paper presents an overview of methods for analyzing soil metabolites and the state-of-the-art of soil metabolomics in relation to soil nutrient *** describe important applications of metabolomics in studying soil carbon cycling and sequestration,and the response of soil organic pools to changing environmental *** includes using metabolomics to provide new insights into the close relationships between soil microbiome and metabolome,as well as responses of soil metabolome to plant and environmental stresses such as soil *** also highlight the advantage of using soil metabolomics to study the biogeochemical cycles of elements and suggest that future research needs to better understand factors driving soil function and health.

Activation of non-basal ＜c + a> slip in multicomponent Mg alloys

Activating non-basal slip is a key method to improve room temperature ductility and formability of Mg alloys. However, the detailed criterion for activation of the slip in multicomponent Mg alloys, which can be utilized in commercial Mg alloys, requires further understanding. The present authors investigated the mechanism and criterion using a molecular statics simulation on dislocation behaviors in multicomponent Mg alloys. We found that if multicomponent Mg alloys have an equivalent dislocation binding intensity to associated binary Mg alloys that are optimized to minimize the critical resolved shear stress anisotropy and thus activate the slip,then the critical resolved shear stress anisotropy between slip systems of the multicomponent Mg alloys can also be minimized, resulting in activation of the slip. The activation is maximized in multicomponent Mg alloys when alloying a large amount of weak dislocation binding elements. It was confirmed through experiments that the multicomponent Mg alloys satisfying the above criterion show higher room-temperature tensile elongation and formability than other alloys.
