Physicochemical and Bacteriological Quality of Ground Water in the Basin of Gounti Yena Valley in Niamey City (Niger Republic)

The Gounti Yéna valley, the subject of this study, is a tributary of the Niger River, it is the main watercourse that divides the left bank of the city of Niamey into two unequal parts. The surface area of its watershed is estimated at about 62 Km2. The objective of the present study is on the one hand to evaluate the current state of the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of the water of Gounti Yéna basin, and on the other hand to define the risks of water pollution and its origin in the face of the phenomenon of rising water table of this basin. In order to carry out this work, we proceeded to a study of the evolution of the physicochemical and bacteriological parameters of the water of the basin of Gounti Yéna during the period going from November 2020 to October 2021, at the level of four points of sampling chosen from the upstream to the downstream of the basin. The results obtained showed that the physico-chemical quality of the water in Gounti Yéna basin is influenced by the lithology of the watershed, climatic factors (rainfall and temperature) and anthropic actions. This study also highlighted the presence of fecal contamination in the water of the Gounti Yéna basin, with a greater degree of emphasis during the rainy season. This contamination remains a concern and may constitute a health risk.

Assessing the Pathogenic Ability of Six Species of Fusarium Genus on Onion Variety in Burkina Faso

Prema 178 onion variety is widely used in production in Burkina Faso. It is greatly appreciated but susceptible to basal rot. This study aimed to evaluate the pathogenic ability of six strains of Fusarium genus identified in Burkina Faso on onion. Seeds, seedlings and bulbs were used for the test. A conidial suspension of each strain was made in tubes and adjusted to 1 × 106 conidia/ml with distilled water for the different tests. Germination test in the laboratory and greenhouse showed that all treatments with the strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. solani, F. falciforme, F. acutatum, F. proliferatum and F. sp. induced failure to emerge and showed a significant difference with the control. The different strains also induced stunting rates of coleoptile growth. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. acutatum, F. proliferatum, F. falciforme and F. solani were very aggressive, as they recorded above 50% damping-off rates. The test on the bulbs revealed that the strains were classified into two groups. The first consists of F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. solani, F. falciforme, F. acutatum, which caused rots with respective lengths from 2.06;1.48;1.84;1.46 and 2.12 cm, thus very aggressive according to Ghanbarzadeh scale. The second is formed by F. proliferatum which recorded 0.90 cm of rot length, thus moderately aggressive. It would be appropriate to suggest a sustainable management method for these pathogens in order to improve the yield of onion production.

The Gounti Yéna valley is the main watercourse that divides the left bank of the city of Niamey into two unequal parts. The area of its watershed is estimated at about 62 km2. The objective of this study is on the one hand to evaluate the current state of the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of the water of the Gounti Yéna basin and on the other hand to define the risks of water pollution and its origin in the face of the phenomenon of the rise in the water table of this basin by defining some health risks linked to these impacts. In order to properly carry out this work, we carried out a study of the evolution of the physicochemical and bacteriological parameters of the water of the Gounti Yéna basin during the period from November 2020 to October 2021, at three sampling points chosen from upstream to downstream of the basin then entomological surveys and among the health centers of the capital. The results obtained showed that the physico-chemical quality of water in the Gounti Yéna basin is influenced by climatic factors (precipitation and temperature) and anthropogenic actions. This study also highlighted the presence of faecal contamination in the water of the Gounti Yéna basin with a greater degree during the rainy season. This contamination remains worrying and constitutes a health risk causing waterborne diseases. The stagnation of the various bodies of water is also a favorable place for the development and spread of vector-borne diseases.

Role of Laparoscopic Surgery in the Management of Female Infertility at the Department of Gynecology of Hôpital du Mali

Infertility is a socio-cultural drama in Africa, especially in Mali and remains difficult for couples to overcome. Laparoscopy, also called minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery, is an operative technique that permits to explore the pelvis and perform an appropriate therapeutic procedure. The objective of our work was to assess the role of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of female infertility at Hopital du Mali. It was a retrospective descriptive study that was conducted over a period of 5 years (January 2013 to December 2018). Any patients followed for infertility and who underwent laparoscopic surgery in the gynecology department over a period of two (2) years were included. The outcome of laparoscopic surgery was evaluated in terms of conception of pregnancy. We had collected 103 infertile patients out of 2984, with a frequency of 3.45%. The mean age of our patients was 30.2 years. Housewives and out-of-school women accounted for 68.93% and 54.37% respectively. Nulligravida represented 41.75%. Regarding infertility, it was primary in 41.75% and secondary in 58.25%, with an average duration of 6.2 years. Systematic chlamydial serology was positive in 62.14% of our patients. Hysterosalpingography (HSG) revealed bilateral tubal obstruction in 53.33% of cases. Laparoscopy found tubal adhesions in 97.80% of cases. Adhesiolysis was the main procedure performed with 84.47% bilateral tubal patency achieved in the methylene blue test. Among our patients who had contracted a pregnancy (22.99%), 85% had carried their pregnancies to term. Tubal damage was the main cause of infertility. Adhesiolysis remains the main laparoscopic procedure for treatment.

Analysis of Maternal Deaths in Suburban of Dakar, Senegal

Objective: Maternal mortality remains a major concern in developing countries. This survey aims to suggest strategic plans that would help decrease maternal and perinatal mortality in the suburbs. It is a descriptive study that shows the different causes of maternal deaths during pregnancy and puerperium period. Methods: It is a retrospective descriptive study done between January 1st 2016 and the 31st of December 2018. We have collected information on all deaths due to mortality issues in Five (5) maternity clinics around Dakar. The record shows that teach centre have an average of 4000 deliveries per year. The data collected from the hospital records were inputted using Sphinx software (version 5). These data were analysed using Epi Info software (version 3.5). After analysing these data, recommendations were made to minimize the different causes of maternal deaths. Results: We recorded 154 maternal deaths out of 32,420 live births. The direct causes of maternal deaths were a result of preeclampsia and its complications (31.2%), postpartum haemorrhage (24.7%), abruption placentae (20.8%) and obstructed labour (7.8%). The indirect causes were mainly sickle cell disease (1.3%), heart disease (1.3%) and gynaecological cancers (1.3%). Maternal deaths were also associated with fetal loss in 47.4% of 153 maternal deaths, need for blood transfusion 59% while none of the reference structures in the suburbs of Dakar has a blood bank;with a need for admission in intensive care unit was noted as 40%.

Artificial induction of labor (AIL) is the set of techniques intended to induce childbirth in order to reduce maternal-fetal mortality. The aim of this paper was to study the maternal and fetal prognosis after the artificial induction of labor with misoprostol. It was a descriptive prospective study conducted from September 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019 at the maternity unit of the Referral Health Center (RHC) in commune I of Bamako. It was about any pregnant woman at term who had received misoprostol as part of the artificial induction of labor. 102 cases of artificial induction with misoprostol 200 μg were collected out of 3641 deliveries, or a frequency of 2.8%. The age group 28 - 32 years accounted for 56.86% with an average age of 28.8 years. Multiparous represented 54.90% of the number. The history of diabetes and hypertension involved 37.25% of the pregnant women. The main indication was premature rupture of membranes (PRM) (40.2%). Induction was performed between the 37th and 41st week of amenorrhea (69.6%). The trigger index according to BISHOP was greater than 7 (50.98%). Induction was done only with 3/4 of misoprostol tablet 200 μg (43.14%). The average labor time was 7 hours (89.22%). The vaginal birth concerned 92.16% of pregnant women. An APGAR10 was noted in 97.85% of newborns after 05 minutes. AIL with misoprostol was practiced at the Center. The main indication was the premature rupture of the membranes. It improves the maternal and fetal prognosis.

Mitral Valve Abnormalities during Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Study on a Cohort in Dakar

INTRODUCTION: Mitral valve abnormalities in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are becoming increasingly well defined, and their role in intra-ventricular obstruction is well defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate mitral valve abnormalities in patients with HCM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study from May 1 to July 1, 2022 in the Cardiology Department of Aristide Le Dantec Hospital. All patients with HCM aged at least 18 years old were included. The parameters studied concerned mainly the mitral valvular apparatus (papillary muscles abnormalities, leaflet length, mitral insufficiency). RESULTS: A total of 10 patients were included. Mean age was 58.3. On Doppler echocardiography, mean interventricular septal thickness was 20.6 mm. The mean maximum intra-ventricular gradient was 21.06 mmHg. Two patients had significant intraventricular obstruction. The mean length of the anterior mitral valve leaflet was 28.7 ± 3.55 mm, with extremes of 22 and 33 mm. The posterior mitral leaflet averaged 14.8 ± 3.16 mm. Nine (9) out of 10 patients had an elongated anterior valve leaflet. Elongation of the posterior leaflet was noted in 6 patients. With regard to papillary muscle position, 6 patients had an anterolateral ascending pillary muscle. These patients had a mean intra-ventricular gradient of 25 mmHg, compared with 16.5 mmHg in the others cases. We found no direct insertion on the mitral valve. Mitral insufficiency was noted in 9 patients, including 5 with mild insufficiency and 4 with moderate one. CONCLUSION: Mitral valve abnormalities in HCM appear to be frequent. They should be analyzed for a better diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

Intrauterine Device in the Immediate Postpartum:Study Comparing Insertion after Cesarean Section and Vaginal Delivery

Objective To compare the safety, side effects and failure rates of contraception copper intrauterine device (IUDs) in the immediate postpartum period after a vaginal delivery and during a cesarean section. Patients and methods This was a descriptive and analytical study, conducted in Gynecology and Obstetrics departments hospital Pikine and Abass Ndao hospitals. It compared two groups of women with IUDs in the immediate postpartum period after a vaginal delivery and during cesarean section. Our sample consisted of 215 patients. We had divided them into two groups: group 1 consisted of 115 patients who delivered by cesarean section;Group 2 consisted of 100 patients who delivered vaginally and whom the insertion was made in post placental or within 48 hours after birth. The variables studied were the sociodémographic characteristics, characteristics of pregnancy and childbirth, insertion procedures, follow up with the assessment of side effects and complications. Results and comments The socio-demographic characteristics were superimposed in both groups. Nine patients were lost to follow up, 4 in group 1 and 5 in group 2. The complaints such as pain (3.7% for Group 1 against 2.6% for group 2), vaginal bleeding (2.1% for group 2, and 1.8% for group 1) were rarely reported and stackable in both groups. After 6 months of follow up, the menses was observed in 42.8% of group 2 against 43.1% of group 1. The abnormal menstrual flow, evaluated by the Higham score, was noted in 29.6% of group 2 and 25% of group 1, and was dominated by excessive bleeding. They motivated IUD removal in two patients. A significant difference was found in the perception of IUD strings, it was effective in 95.4% of patients in group 2 against 50.5% for group 1. The evictions were 9 at 3-month follow-up 7 related group 2 and 2 for Group 1. It was partial (isthmic IUD) and total expulsion. Fetal Instrumental Extractions at the Maternity Section of the Dakar Nabil Choucair Health Centre (Senegal) in 2017: Epidemio-Clinical Aspects, Indications and Prognosis

Introduction:?An instrumental extraction is performed in order to shorten the phase of expulsion of the fetus outside the maternal pelvic pathway, when there is a suspected fetal state or a defect in progression of the fetal mobile. It can be responsible for immediate or late maternal complications, which are not specific because they can occur after a normal delivery. The objectives of this work are to describe the epidemiological-clinical and prognosis aspects of deliveries assisted by instrumental extractions in a reference maternity unit in Dakar.?Materials and Methods:?This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017, a period of 12 months at the maternity ward of the Nabil Choucair Health Center. The collection was carried out using the survey form completed on the basis of the analysis of the files, the delivery register and the anaesthesia register of the operating room. The parameters studied were about socio-demographic?characteristics, indications and prognosis. The data entry was carried out using the Sphinx version 5 software and the data analysis using the Epi info version?3.5?software. Results:?During the period of our study, we collected 94 instrumental?extractions. The frequency of instrumental extractions was?1.7%. The average age of the patients was 25 years with extremes of 16 to 43 years old. The average parity was 1 with extremes 1 to 6. Among parturient women, 12?patients (12.8%) had a history of suction cup, two (2.1%) had received forceps and three (3.2%) had a cesarean section. The average gestational age was 39 Weeks of Amenorrhea (WA), the average uterine?height was 32?cm, fetal heart sounds were normal in 98% parturient’ cases. The vaginal?touch had found a fully dilated cervix, a rupture of the amniotic sac with clear amniotic?fluid in 98% of parturient women and a fetus with an anterior left iliac occipito topin 69.4% of cases. The study is carried out in imperfect contact with a concrete slab wall attached to a panel based on rice straw compressed in a dynamic frequency regime. We will propose the characterization of thermal insulation for thermal resistance of contact (x = 0.05 m). The impact of heat exchange coefficients on the front face (x = 0 m) and the rear face (x = 0.1 m) on these resistors is shown.
