Landsat 8 and Alos DEm geological mapping reveals the architecture of the giant mesoproterozoic Kunene Complex anorthosite suite(Angola/Namibia)

The quasi-monomineralic composition and huge spatial extent of massif-type anorthosites make detecting lithological regions and boundaries *** use processed Landsat 8 OLI multispectral images and ALOS digital elevation models integrated with field and petrographic observations to characterize the architecture of the≥17,000 km2 mesoproterozoic Kunene Complex(KC)anorthosite suite in Angola and *** of false colour composite bands 6,4 and 1 and band ratios 4/2(ferric minerals),6/5(ferrous minerals)and 6/7(OH-bearing minerals),as well as assessment of the PCA and mNF matrices of eigenvectors and eigenvalues from Landsat 8 data using available spectral libraries,have substantially improved the interpretation of the Kunene Complex rock types and *** dataset shows that the reflectance signature of KC anorthositic rocks is primarily a function of the degree of metasomatism,which is most significant in olivine-poor rock *** weathering intensity of the olivine-bearing anorthosite substrate is another control on the remote sensing *** remote sensing and field-based approach has enabled us to divide the KC anorthosite suite into six distinct spectral and architecture domains and at least four distinct magmatic plutons when considering available high-precision geochronological *** northernmost pluton(ca.1380 ma)of massive,olivine-bearing anorthosite shows distinct remote sensing signatures in the band ratio and mNF images marked by the dominance of OH-bearing and subordinate ferric *** central pluton(1412–1400 ma)is composed of NNE-to N-striking steeply dipping interlayered olivine-bearing and olivinepoor anorthosite,which correspond to ridges of dark-coloured,low albedo rocks with subordinate slightly oxidised ferrous mineral spectral signatures,and valleys of low albedo and OH-bearing mineral spectral signatures.A NNE-striking tectonic zone along a linear belt of KC granite gneiss separates the northern and central plu

Recent trends in the use of polyoxometalate-based material for efficient water oxidation

Polyoxometalates （POms）, with their attractive topological and electronic properties, have been demonstrated over the last few decades to be efficient catalysts for many reactions. In a new direction, POms having a purely inorganic framework are now being explored as efficient catalysts for water oxidation. This review focuses on very recent developments of POm-based catalysts for water oxidation to O2. In the very extensive family of POms, tetra-core sandwich-type Ru- and Co-containing POm complexes, namely [Ru404（OH）2（H20）4（y-SiW10O36）2]10- and [CO4（H2O）2（a-PWgO34）2]10- exhibit the ability to facilitate water oxidation under electrocatalytic and/or photocatalytic conditions. However, it is concluded that much work still needs to be done to explain the catalytic mechanisms and optimize these catalytic systems. In addition, recent trends in using ionic liquids as media to modify the electrolytic environment and enhance water oxidation are highlighted.

Towards high strength cast mg-RE based alloys:Phase diagrams and strengthening mechanisms

mg-rare earth(RE)based systems provide several important commercial alloys and many alloy development opportunities for high strength applications,especially in aerospace and defense *** phase diagrams,microstructure,and strengthening mechanisms of these multicomponent systems are very complex and often not well understood in *** have calculated phase diagrams of important binary,ternary,and multicomponent RE-containing alloy systems,using CALPHAD(CALculation of PHAse Diagrams).Based on these phase diagrams,this paper offers a critical overview on phase equilibria and strengthening mechanisms in these alloy systems,including precipitation,long period stacking order(LPSO),and other intermetallic *** review also summarized several promising mg-RE based cast alloys in comparison with commercial WE54 and WE43 alloys;and explored new strategies for future alloy development for high strength *** is pointed out that the combination of precipitation and LPSO phases can lead to superior strength and ductility in mg-RE based cast *** precipitates and LPSO phases can form a complex three-dimensional network that effectively impedes dislocation motion on the basal and non-basal *** LPSO phases can also prevent the coarsening of precipitates when they interact,thus providing good thermal stability at elevated *** research is needed to determine how the combination of these two types of phases can be used in alloy design and industrial scale applications.

Late Neoproterozoic adakitic magmatism within the Eastern Arabian Nubian Shield has been dated at633.2±9.0 ma(2σ).These magnas intrude the forearc Ad Dawadimi Basin,which is composed of metapelitic schists and greywacke along with ophiolitic melanges of boninitic affinity which underwent inversion and deformation by^620 *** adakitic magmatism,while intruding parts of the Ad Dawadimi Basin,predates this deformation,but is possibly coincident with basin *** adakitic magmatism requires melting of an amphibolite or eclogitic source,empirical and experimental constraints require anomalously hot supra-subduction zone *** that this magmatism immediately predates basin inversion,these magmas possibly pinpoint the timing of the slab breaking,marking the terminal stages of arc magmatism,terrane accretion and the influx of hot oceanic asthenospheric *** influx of hot asthenospheric mantle may also be responsible for postcolltsional A-type magmatism.

Using a 3-D multicellular simulation of spinal cord injury with live cell imaging to study the neural immune barrier to nanoparticle uptake

Development of nanoparticle （NP） based therapies to promote regeneration in sites of central nervous system （CNS; i.e, brain and spinal cord） pathology relies critically on the availability of experimental models that offer biologically valid predictions of NP fate in vivo. However, there is a major lack of biological models that mimic the pathological complexity of target neural sites in vivo, particularly the responses of resident neural immune cells to NPs. Here, we have utilised a previously developed in vitro model of traumatic spinal cord injury （based on 3-D organotypic slice arrays） with dynamic time lapse imaging to reveal in real-time the acute cellular fate of NPs within injury foci. We demonstrate the utility of our model in revealing the well documented phenomenon of avid NP sequestration by the intrinsic immune cells of the CNS （the microglia）. Such immune sequestration is a known translational barrier to the use of NP-based therapeutics for neurological injury. Accordingly, we suggest that the utility of our model in mimicking microglial sequestration behaviours offers a valuable investigative tool to evaluate strategies to overcome this cellular response within a simple and biologically relevant experimental system, whilst reducing the use of live animal neurological injury models for such studies.

Background'. This study sought to explore the dose—response rate/association between aerobic fitness (VC)2max) and self-reported physical activity(PA) and to assess whether this association varies by sex, age, and weight ***. VO2max was assessed using the 20・m shuttle・run test. PA was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAQ) for Adolescents(aged > 11 years, PAQ-A) or for Children (aged meters of PAQ and PAQ2 tovary with the categorical variables sex, age group, and weight ***: ANCOVA identified a curvilinear association between VO2max and PAQ, with positive linear PAQ terms that varied for both sex andweight status but with a negative PAQ2 term of —0.39 (95% confidence interval (CI): —0.57 to —0.21) that was common for all groups in regardto age, sex, and weight status. These curvilinear (inverted U) associations suggest that the benefits of increasing PA (same dose) on VO2max isgreater when children report lower levels of PA compared to children who report higher levels of PA. These dose-response rates were alsosteeper for boys and were steeper for lean children compared to overweight/obese ***'. Health practitioners should be aware that encouraging greater PA (same dose) in inactive and underweight children will result ingreater gains in V02max (response) compared with their active and overweight/obese counterparts.

Effects of sun compass error on spatial search by Clark’s nutcrackers

Animals employ compasses during navigation,but little attention has been paid to how accuracy is maintained in the face of compass error,which is inevitable in biological *** use of multiple landmarks may minimize the effect of compass *** allowed Clark’s nutcrackers to cache seeds in an outdoor aviary with either one or four landmarks present,and subsequently subjected them to small clock-shifts mimicking the effects of compass *** predicted,the results showed a significant decrease in search accuracy following the clock-shift when one landmark was present but not when four landmarks were *** results support that nutcrackers encode information from the sun as well as terrestrial landmarks,and these spatial cues are used in a flexible ***,our results are important as they support the hypothesis that multiple landmarks may be used during situations where the sun compass has even a small amount of error.

A versatile microfluidic device for multiple ex vivo/ in vitro tissue assays unrestrained from tissue topography

Precision-cut tissue slices are an important in vitro system to study organ function because they preserve most of the native cellular microenvironments of organs,including complex intercellular ***,during sample manipulation or slicing,some of the natural surface topology and structure of these tissues is lost or ***,we introduce a microfluidic platform to perform multiple assays on the surface of a tissue section,unhindered by surface *** device consists of a valve on one side and eight open microchannels located on the opposite side,with the tissue section sandwiched between these two *** the valve is actuated,eight independent microfluidic channels are formed over a tissue *** strategy prevents cross-contamination when performing assays and enables *** irregular tissues such as an aorta,we conducted multiple in vitro and ex vivo assays on tissue sections,including short-term culturing,a drug toxicity assay,a fluorescence immunohistochemistry staining assay,and an immune cell assay,in which we observed the interaction of neutrophils with lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated *** microfluidic platform can be employed in other disciplines,such as tissue physiology and pathophysiology,morphogenesis,drug toxicity and efficiency,metabolism studies,and diagnostics,enabling the conduction of several assays with a single biopsy sample.
