Soleus arthrogenic muscle inhibition following acute lateral ankle sprain correlates with symptoms and ankle disability but not with postural control

Background:Acute lateral ankle sprains(ALAS)are associated with long-term impairments and instability tied to altered neural excitability.Arthrogenic muscle inhibition(AMI)has been observed in this population;however,relationships with injury-related impairments are unclear,potentially due to the resting,prone position in which AMI is typically measured.Assessing AMI during bipedal stance may provide a better understanding of this relationship.Methods:AMI was assessed in 38 young adults(19 ALAS within 72 h of injury:10 males,21.4±2.7 years;19 healthy controls:10 males,21.9±2.2 years;mean±SD)using the Hoffmann reflex(H-reflex)during bipedal stance.Electrical stimulation was administered to identify the _(max)imal H-reflex(H_(max))and _(max)imal motor response(M_(max))from the soleus,fibularis longus,and tibialis anterior muscles.The primary outcome measure was the H_(max)/M_(max) ratio.Secondary outcomes included acute symptoms(pain and swelling),postural control during bipedal stance,and self-reported function.Results:No significant group-by-limb interactions were observed for any muscle.However,a significant group main effect was observed in the soleus muscle(F(1,35)=6.82,p=0.013),indicating significantly lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios following ALAS(0.38±0.20)compared to healthy controls(0.53±0.16).Furthermore,lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios in the soleus significantly correlated with acute symptoms and self-reported function but not with postural control.Conclusion:This study supports previous evidence of AMI in patients with ALAS,providing insight into neurophysiologic impacts of musculoskeletal injury.Our results suggest that assessing AMI in a standing position following acute injury may provide valuable insight into how AMI develops and guide potential therapeutic options to curb and offset the formation of joint instability.

Myocarditis is a disease process that every emergency physician fears missing.Its severity can be mild to life-threatening,and many cases are likely undetected because they are subclinical with nonspecifi c signs.[1]Subtle cardiac signs may be overshadowed by systemic symptoms of the underlying infectious process.Fever,myalgias,lethargy,symptoms commonly associated with viral syndrome,can mask the life-threatening myocarditis that may be present.In fact,in the United States Myocarditis Treatment Trial,almost 90%of patients reported symptoms consistent with a viral prodrome.[2]Ammirati et al[3]reported that 27%of patients with myocarditis had either reduced left ventricular ejection fraction,ventricular arrhythmias,or low cardiac output.Here,we present a case report,in which handheld point-of-care ultrasound was utilized at the bedside to aid in the critical diagnosis of myocarditis.With the additional information provided through this imaging modality,this patient was able to be transferred to the appropriate tertiary care facility in an expeditious manner and receive possible defi nitive treatment.

SiC nanowires with thickness-controlled SiO2 shells： Fabrication, mechanism, reaction kinetics and photoluminescence properties

SiC nanowires with thickness-controlled SiO2 shells have been obtained by a simple and efficient method, namely treatment of SiC/SiO2 core-shell nanowires in NaOH solution. The products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The thickness of the SiO2 shell can be effectively controlled by selecting the appropriate processing time, and pure SiC nanowires were also obtained by alkaline cleaning in 1 mol·L−1 NaOH solution for 40 min at 70 °C. A mechanism for the removal of the SiO2 shells has been proposed, and a two-phase reaction kinetic equation was derived to explain the rate of the removal of the SiO2 shells. The validity of this equation was verified by experiment. This work not only describes an effective experimental method for achieving SiC nanowires with thickness-controlled SiO2 coatings but also provides a fundamental theoretical equation with a certain level of generality. In addition, photoluminescence (PL) measurement results showed that the SiC nanowires sheathed with an optimum SiO2 thickness (3.03 nm) have better photoluminescence properties than either the bare SiC nanowires or SiC nanowires with thicker coatings of SiO2.

Cobalt phosphide (CoP) is considered to be a potential candidate in the field of electrocatalysis due to its low-cost, abundant resources and high electrochemical stability. However, there is a great space for further improvement of its electrocatalytic performance since its charge transfer rate and catalytic activity have not reached a satisfactory level. Herein, we design and fabricate a three dimensional urchins like V-doped CoP with different amounts of V-doping on nickel foam electrode. The V-doped CoP/NF electrode with optimized amounts of V-doping (10%) exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance under universal-pH conditions and preeminent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline media. Notably, the assembled water-splitting cell displays a cell voltage of only 1.53 V at 10 mA·cm−2 and has excellent durability, much better than many reported related bifunctional catalysts. The experiment results and theoretical analysis revealed that vanadium atoms replace cobalt atoms in CoP lattice. Vanadium doping can not only raise the density of electronic states near the Fermi level enhancing the conductivity of the catalyst, but can also optimize the free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates adsorption over CoP, thus promoting its catalytic activity. Moreover, the unique nanostructure of the catalyst provides the various shortened channels for charge transfer and reactant/electrolyte diffusion, which accelerates the electrocatalytic process. Also, the in situ growth strategy can improve the conductivity and stability of the catalyst.

Improving the Thermal Stability of Cu_3N Films by Addition of Mn

Mn-doped Cu3N films were deposited by cylindrical magnetron sputtering equipment on the common glass at room temperature. The incorporation of Mn can change the preferred growth orientation from Cu-rich plane （111） to N-rich plane （100） due to the improvement of nitridation of Cu. The shrinkage of the lattice and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that Mn should replace Cu atoms in the lattice or be segregated in the grain boundaries. The thickness of Mn-doped film is smaller than that of the pure one due to the less physisorption of N species among the columnar grains. The mean grain size and the energy gap become larger with increasing Mn concentration to 2.2 at.% and then decrease when the concentration of Mn is higher than 2.2 at.%. Notably, weak doping of 1.5 at.% Mn successfully promotes the decomposed temperature by -50℃. According to the results of XRD and SEM for Mn- doped films annealed in vacuum, a possible decomposed mechanism with increasing the annealing temperature is proposed.

Tensile Strain Capacity Prediction of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) Using Soft Computing Techniques

Plain concrete is strong in compression but brittle in tension,having a low tensile strain capacity that can significantly degrade the long-term performance of concrete structures,even when steel reinforcing is present.In order to address these challenges,short polymer fibers are randomly dispersed in a cement-based matrix to forma highly ductile engineered cementitious composite(ECC).Thismaterial exhibits high ductility under tensile forces,with its tensile strain being several hundred times greater than conventional concrete.Since concrete is inherently weak in tension,the tensile strain capacity(TSC)has become one of the most extensively researched properties.As a result,developing a model to predict the TSC of the ECC and to optimize the mixture proportions becomes challenging.Meanwhile,the effort required for laboratory trial batches to determine the TSC is reduced.To achieve the research objectives,five distinct models,artificial neural network(ANN),nonlinear model(NLR),linear relationship model(LR),multi-logistic model(MLR),and M5P-tree model(M5P),are investigated and employed to predict the TSCof ECCmixtures containing fly ash.Data from115 mixtures are gathered and analyzed to develop a new model.The input variables include mixture proportions,fiber length and diameter,and the time required for curing the various mixtures.The model’s effectiveness is evaluated and verified based on statistical parameters such as R2,mean absolute error(MAE),scatter index(SI),root mean squared error(RMSE),and objective function(OBJ)value.Consequently,the ANN model outperforms the others in predicting the TSC of the ECC,with RMSE,MAE,OBJ,SI,and R2 values of 0.42%,0.3%,0.33%,0.135%,and 0.98,respectively.

Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals,including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy applications.However,being weak in nature,metal luminescence remains poorly understood,its microscopic origin strongly debated,and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely unexploited.Here,we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold flakes.Specifically,we present experimental evidence,supported by first-principles simulations,to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin(i.e.,radiative emission from electron/hole recombination)when exciting in the interband regime.Our model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is reduced.Excitingly,such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness,associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the Fermi level.We qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling,thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this material.Our study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

Distributed Mallows Model Averaging for Ridge Regressions

Ridge regression is an effective tool to handle multicollinearity in regressions. It is also an essential type of shrinkage and regularization methods and is widely used in big data and distributed data applications. The divide and conquer trick, which combines the estimator in each subset with equal weight, is commonly applied in distributed data. To overcome multicollinearity and improve estimation accuracy in the presence of distributed data, we propose a Mallows-type model averaging method for ridge regressions, which combines estimators from all subsets. Our method is proved to be asymptotically optimal allowing the number of subsets and the dimension of variables to be divergent.The consistency of the resultant weight estimators tending to the theoretically optimal weights is also derived. Furthermore, the asymptotic normality of the model averaging estimator is demonstrated.Our simulation study and real data analysis show that the proposed model averaging method often performs better than commonly used model selection and model averaging methods in distributed data cases.

Bimetal nickel–cobalt phosphide directly grown on commercial graphite substrate by the one-step electrodeposition as efficient electrocatalytic electrode

It is challenging to find a method to obtain a catalyst with low cost and efficient multifunctional performances.Herein, in order to obtain the electrode with high-performance water splitting and non-enzymatic glucose detection, the commercial graphite sheet(GS) with excellent durability and electroconductivity was used as substrate material, and the non-noble ternary component Ni–Co–P catalyst with hierarchical architecture was fabricated on GS via a co-electrodeposition. The catalyst only required low overpotentials of 44.6, 76.5 and 49 m V to drive the current density of 10 m A cmalongside with the smaller Tafel slopes of 39.2, 44.8 and 112 m V decfor hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M HSOand 1.0 M PBS solution,respectively. For oxygen evolution reaction(OER), the catalyst demonstrated a low overpotential of 304 m V to achieve the current density of 20 m A cmwith excellent Tafel slope of 89.8 m V decin alkaline solution.Furthermore, the Ni–Co–P/GS electrode serving as non-enzymatic glucose sensor exhibited the superior electrocatalytic activity with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 7400 μA m Mcm, low detection limit of 0.425 μM(S/N = 3), and wide linear range(1–1200 μM).

A new perspective on intervertebral disc calcification—from bench to bedside

Disc degeneration primarily contributes to chronic low back and neck pain.Consequently,there is an urgent need to understand the spectrum of disc degeneration phenotypes such as fibrosis,ectopic calcification,herniation,or mixed phenotypes.Amongst these phenotypes,disc calcification is the least studied.Ectopic calcification,by definition,is the pathological mineralization of soft tissues,widely studied in the context of conditions that afflict vasculature,skin,and cartilage.Clinically,disc calcification is associated with poor surgical outcomes and back pain refractory to conservative treatment.It is frequently seen as a consequence of disc aging and progressive degeneration but exhibits unique molecular and morphological characteristics:hypertrophic chondrocyte-like cell differentiation;TNAP,ENPP1,and ANK upregulation;cell death;altered Pi and PPi homeostasis;and local inflammation.Recent studies in mouse models have provided a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying this phenotype.It is essential to recognize that the presentation and nature of mineralization differ between AF,NP,and EP compartments.Moreover,the combination of anatomic location,genetics,and environmental stressors,such as aging or trauma,govern the predisposition to calcification.Lastly,the systemic regulation of calcium and Pi metabolism is less important than the local activity of PPi modulated by the ANK-ENPP1 axis,along with disc cell death and differentiation status.While there is limited understanding of this phenotype,understanding the molecular pathways governing local intervertebral disc calcification may lead to developing disease-modifying drugs and better clinical management of degeneration-related pathologies.
