＜正＞INTRODUCTION CNTO 95 is a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds and inhibits the av integrins, αvβ3 and αvβ5 with high affinity and also binds to αvβ1 and αvβ6. CNTO 95 inhibits cell adhesion, migration, proliferation and invasion of both tumor cells and endothelial cells in vitro. The antibody inhibits the αvβ3 and αvβ5 integrins that have been implicated in angiogenesis: While αvβ3 is involved in the response to FGF2 and TNFα, αvβ5 is implicated in VEGF and TGFα signaling. Type Ia supernovae are bright stellar explosions distinguished by standardizable light curves that allow for their use as distance indicators for cosmological studies. Despite the highly successful use of these events in this capacity, many fundamental questions remain. Contemporary research inves- tigates how properties of the progenitor system that follow from the host galaxy such as composition and age influence the brightness of an event with the goal of better understanding and assessing the intrinsic scatter in the brightness. We provide an overview of these supernovae and proposed progenitor systems, all of which involve one or more compact stars known as white dwarfs. We describe contemporary research investigating how the composition and structure of the progenitor white dwarf systematically influences the explosion outcome assuming the progenitor is a single white dwarf that has gained mass from a companion. We present results illustrating some of these systematic effects from our research.

Equal Sex Ratios of a Marine Green Alga, Bryopsis plumosa

By finding some important culture conditions as below, we succeeded in experimentally controlling the whole life history of a dioecious marine green alga, Bryopsis plumosa （Hudson） C. Agardh. In this study, we focused on the primary and secondary sex ratios （i.e. at inception and maturity） using these culture techniques. Gametogenesis was induced by culturing haploid gametophytes with Provasoli＇s enriched seawater （PES） medium under a 14：10 h light： dark cycle at 14 ℃. Formed zygotes grew into diploid sporophytes, which were cultured for 3 months with PES medium under a 14：10 h light ： nbsp;dark cycle at 18℃. Then they were transferred into Schreiber medium and cultured under a 10：14 h light： dark cycle at 22℃. Within 1 week, zoosporogenesis was observed. Zoospores were released within a couple of days. Each zoospore soon germinated and grew into a unisexual gametophyte. The primary sex ratio was examined in gametophytes that originated from a single sporophyte. The secondary sex ratio was studied in the field. Both were estimated as 1：1. Synchronized meiotic cell divisions might occur during zoosporogenesis dividing each sex-determining factor evenly among zoospores. Given the equal sex ratio at maturity, there seems to be no environmental factor that differentially affects the survival of male or female gametophytes in nature.

Intrathecal IgG synthesis in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) is decreased by natural human alpha interferon

Intrathecal IgG synthesis (IT IgG Syn) is an established biomarker used for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Earlier studies used this biomarker to assess the impact of 2 different synthetic forms of interferon alpha (IFN-α) in chronic progressive MS. Unexpectedly, IT IgG synthesis was increased by this treatment. For the first time, we have assessed this parameter in relapsing-remitting patients to measure the impact of natural IFN-α treatment in a doseranging study in six dosage groups (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, & 30 MIU). We have found that IFN-α normalized IT IgG Synthesis at 12 weeks treatment for all dosage groups. Two weeks after stopping IFN-α results rose slightly. At 52 weeks, 28 weeks after stopping IFN-a results revealed cessation of IT IgG Synthesis in half of the patients (15, 20, 25 MIU weekly). These results reflect different outcomes for relapsing-remitting patients vs. chronic progressive patients. They may, however, reflect differences in the biological properties of the interferon products used. An optimal range of dosage with natural human IFN-α dosage for MS is suggested by the results.
