Forest Restoration Potential in China:Implications for Carbon Capture

Reforestation is an eco-friendly strategy for countering rising carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere and the negative effects of forest loss and degradation.China,with one of the world’s most considerable afforestation rates,has increased its forest cover from 16.6%20 years ago to 23.0%by 2020.However,the maximum potential forest coverage achieved via tree planting and restoration is uncertain.To map potential tree coverage across China,we developed a random forest regression model relating environmental factors and appropriate forest types.We estimate 67.2 million hectares of land currently available for tree restoration after excluding existing forested areas,urban areas,and agriculture land covers/uses,which is 50%higher than the current understanding.Converting these lands to the forest would generate 3.99 gigatons of new above-and belowground carbon stocks,representing an important contribution to achieving carbon neutrality.This potential is spatially imbalanced,with the largest restorable carbon potential being located in the southwest(29.5%),followed by the northeast(17.2%)and northwest(16.8%).Our study highlights the need to align tree restoration areas with the uneven distribution of carbon sequestration potential.In addition to being a biological mitigation strategy to partially offset carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning,reforestation should provide other environmental services such as the restoration of degraded soils,conservation of biological diversity,revitalization of hydrological integrity,localized cooling,and improvement in air quality.Because of the collective benefits of forest restoration,we encourage that such activities be ecosystem focused as opposed to solely focusing on tree planting.

Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease(AERd)patients with CRSwNP suffer from reduced quality of life,reduced economic productivity,and higher risk of depression and sleep dysfunction.These patients often require frequent medical and surgical therapy,including functional endoscopic sinus surgery for recalcitrant disease.Given this severity,anti-type 2 biologic treatments are being investigated for use in this subgroup of patients with CRSwNP,including Omalizumab and dupilumab.Preliminary data suggests that SNOT-22 related quality of life improvements following treatment with biologies are comparable to the current standard of care in the short term,but there is a lack of long-term data and standardized regimen that makes direct comparison difficult.Biologic therapies additionally require continuous use to avoid recurrence,and currently cost many times more than existing medical or surgical therapies.

Although ants are an ecologically dominant and extensively studied faunal group throughout the tropics, there is a poor understanding of tropical ant diversity and distribution at large spatial scales. Here we use a collection developed from 3 decades of ant surveys to present the first analysis of ant diversity and biogeography of a large tropical region. Our objective was to document the species richness, composition, and biogeographic distributions of the ant fauna of the 400 000 km [2] 'Top End' of Australia's Northern Territory. The known Top End ant fauna comprises 901 native species from 59 genera. The richest genera are Pheidole (90 species), Melophorus (83), Monomorium (83), Camponotus (71), Meranoplus (63), Polyrhachis (57), Rhytidoponera (50), Tetramorium (43), Cerapachys (32), and Iridomyrmex (31). The fauna is the center of diverse radiations within species-groups of genera such as Meranoplus, Rhytidoponera, and Leptogenys. It also includes IndoMalayan species that have likely bypassed the normal dispersal route into Australia through Cape York Peninsula in North Queensland. Faunistic similarity with other regions of far northern Australia is associated more with rainfall than with geographic proximity. Most (60%) of Top End ant species have not been recorded elsewhere, and, despite uncertainties relating to species delimitation and sampling intensity, this appears to be a credible estimate of the level of endemism. Such exceptionally high endemism can be attributed to the Top End's geographic isolation from other regions of northern Australia with comparably high rainfall.◆ (© 2016 Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.)

Understanding the history of microcystins(MCs)pollution in large lakes can help inform future lake management.We collected sediment cores from Lake Taihu to:investigate the long-term record of MCs(MC-LR,MC-YR,and MC-RR),explore the main environmental drivers of MCs,and assess their public health and ecological risks.Results showed that MCs content in all cores increased over time.The core from north Taihu had the highest MC concentrations,with an average total MCs(sum of MC-LR,MC-YR,and MC-RR=TMCs)content of(74.31±328.55)ng/g.The core from eastern Taihu showed the lowest average TMCs content of(2.91±3.95)ng/g.PCA showed that sediment MCs at the three sites were positively correlated with sediment chlorophyll-a.MC-LR and MC-YR in northern and western Taihu negatively correlated with both the sediment total organic carbon/sediment total nitrogen ratio(STOC/STN)andwater nitrate(NO_(3)^(−)-N)concentration,but three MC congeners at eastern Taihu showed positive correlations with water orthophosphate(PO_(4)^(3−)-P),NO_(3)^(−)-N,and STOC/STN.Generalized additive model analysis at each site revealed that NO_(3)^(−)-N was the main TMCs driver in northern andwestern Taihuwhere phytoplankton dominated,whereasPO_(4)^(3−)-P was the main TMCs driver in eastern Taihu where macrophytes dominated.At the whole lake scale,total phosphorus(TP)andPO_(4)^(3−)-P were the most important environmental drivers influencing MCs;TP explained 47.4%,44.2%,and 47.6%while orthophosphate explained 34.8%,31.2%,and 34.7%of the deviance on TMCs,MC-LR,and MC-YR,respectively.NO_(3)^(−)-N also showed a strong effect on MCs variation,especially on MC-YR.Risk assess-ment showed that both ecological and public health risk has increased in recent years.We conclude that while control of phosphorus and nitrogen input should be a major focus for future lake management,lake zone-specificmanagement strategiesmay also be important.
