Urbanization reduces resource use efficiency of phytoplankton community by altering the environment and decreasing biodiversity

Urbanization often exerts multiple effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms,including changes in biodiversity,species composition and ecosystem ***,the impacts of urbanization on river phytoplankton in subtropical urbanizing watersheds remain largely ***,we explored the effects of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure(i.e.,biomass,community composition and diversity)and function(i.e.,resource use efficiency)in a subtropical river at watershed scale in southeast China over 6 years.A total of 318 phytoplankton species belonging into 120 genera and 7 phyla were identified from 108 *** biomass showed an increasing trend with increasing urbanization *** phytoplankton community shifted from Chlorophyta dominance in rural upstream waters to Bacillariophyta dominance in urbanized downstream ***,phytoplankton diversity and resource use efficiency(RUE=phytoplankton biomass/total phosphorus)were significantly decreased with increasing urbanization level from upstream to *** RUE exhibited a significant positive correlation with species richness,but a negative correlation with phytoplankton *** variation in environmental factors(turbidity,total nitrogen,NH_(4)^(+)-N,total phosphorus,PO_(4)^(3-)-P and percentage urbanized area)was significantly correlated with phytoplankton diversity and ***,our results revealed the influence of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure and ecosystem function was due to its altering the environmental ***,human-driven urbanization may play crucial roles in shaping the structure and function of phytoplankton communities in subtropical rivers,and the mechanism of this process can provide important information for freshwater sustainable uses,watershed management and conservation.

Base excision repair accessory factors in senescence avoidance and resistance to treatments

Cancer cells,in which the RAS and PI3K pathways are activated,produce high levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS),which cause oxidative DNA damage and ultimately cellular *** process has been documented in tissue culture,mouse models,and human pre-cancerous *** this context,cellular senescence functions as a tumour suppressor *** rare cancer cells,however,manage to adapt to avoid senescence and continue to *** well-documented mode of adaptation involves increased production of antioxidants often associated with inactivation of the KEAP1 tumour suppressor gene and the resulting upregulation of the NRF2 transcription *** this review,we detail an alternative mode of adaptation to oxidative DNA damage induced by ROS:the increased activity of the base excision repair(BER)pathway,achieved through the enhanced expression of BER enzymes and DNA repair accessory *** proteins,exemplified here by the CUT domain proteins CUX1,CUX2,and SATB1,stimulate the activity of BER *** ensued accelerated repair of oxidative DNA damage enables cancer cells to avoid senescence despite high ROS *** a by-product of this adaptation,these cancer cells exhibit increased resistance to genotoxic treatments including ionizing radiation,temozolomide,and ***,considering the intrinsic error rate associated with DNA repair and translesion synthesis,the elevated number of oxidative DNA lesions caused by high ROS leads to the accumulation of mutations in the cancer cell population,thereby contributing to tumour heterogeneity and eventually to the acquisition of resistance,a major obstacle to clinical treatment.

Understanding how ions and solvent molecules migrate within charged membranes is fundamental for advancing the analysis of biological membranes and the design of energy storage and production *** efforts highlighted a significant interplay between mechanics and electrochemistry in charged membranes,calling for the development of high-fidelity models to describe their ***,we propose a continuum theory of the chemoelectromechanics of charged membranes,accounting for potentially large deformations and non-idealities of the solution permeating the *** demonstrate the potential applications of our theory within the study of ionic polymer *** theory predicts sizeable effects of non-idealities and mechanical deformations,enabling insight into the role of mechanics on solute and solvent transport within charged membranes.

Pfaffians of matrices with entries z[i, j]/（xi ＋ xj）, or determinants of matrices with entries z[i, j]/（xi - xj）, where the antisymmetrical indeterminates z[i, j] satisfy the Pliicker relations, can be identified with a trace in an irreducible representation of a product of two symmetric groups. Using Young＇s orthogonal bases, one can write explicit expressions of such Pfaffians and determinants, and recover in particular the evaluation of Pfaffians which appeared in the recent literature.

The computational simulation of the manufacturing process of lithium-ion battery composite electrodes based on mechanistic models allows capturing the influence of manufacturing parameters on electrode ***,ensuring that these properties match with experimental data is typically computationally *** this work,we tackled this costly procedure by proposing a functional data-driven framework,aiming first to retrieve the early numerical values calculated from a molecular dynamics simulation to predict if the observable being calculated is prone to match with our range of experimental values,and in a second step,recover additional values of the ongoing simulation to predict its final *** demonstrated this approach in the context of the calculation of electrode slurries *** report that for various electrode chemistries,the expected mechanistic simulation results can be obtained 11 times faster with respect to the complete simulations,while being accurate with a R^(2)_(score) equals to 0.96.

Perspective on transcatheter aortic valve implantation： past, present, and future

It is well recognized that any disruptive innovation in .medicine looks at first unfeasible and unacceptable. It has been the case for transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） as the project appeared totally unrealistic in the early 1990s. It is quite thrilling, therefore, to observe the current expansion of this technology worldwide, 20 years after the birth of the concept and 10 years after the first-in-man TAVI procedure performed in Rouen on April 16, 2002. To date, more than 80 000 patients have benefitted from TAVI worldwide and the number is consistently increasing.

In this study, conducted in French Guiana, a part of the native range of the fire ant Solenopsis saevissima, we compared the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of media workers with previous results based on intraspecific aggressiveness tests. We noted a strong congruence between the two studies permitting us to delimit 2 supercolonies extending over large distances （up to 54 kin）, a phenomenon known as unicoloniality. Solenopsis geminata workers, taken as an out-group for cluster analyses, have a very different cuticular hydrocarbon profile. Because S. saevissima has been reported outside its native range, our conclusion is that this species has the potential to become invasive because unicoloniality （i.e., the main attribute for ants to become invasive） was shown at least for the Guianese population.

We have carried out an experimental study of liquid drop impact on superhydrophobic substrates covered by a carpet of chemically coated *** micro-structure of the surface is similar to some biological ones(Lotus leaf for example).In this situation the contact angle can then be considered as equal to 180 degrees,with no *** to its initial inertia,the drop experiences a flattening phase after it hits the surface,taking the shape of a *** it reaches its maximal lateral extension,the drop begins to retract and bounces *** have extracted the lateral extension of the drop,and we propose a model that explains the *** find a limit initial velocity beyond which the drop protrudes into the nano-wire *** discuss the relevance of practical issues in terms of self-cleaning surfaces or spray-cooling.

Direct impacts of recent climate warming on insect populations
