Evaluation of IoT Measurement Solutions from a Metrology Perspective

To professionally plan and manage the development and evolution of the Internet of Things(IoT),researchers have proposed several IoT performance measurement *** performance measurement solutions can be very valuable for managing the development and evolution of IoT systems,as they provide insights into performance issues,resource optimization,predictive maintenance,security,reliability,and user ***,there are several issues that can impact the accuracy and reliability of IoT performance measurements,including lack of standardization,complexity of IoT systems,scalability,data privacy,and *** previous studies proposed several IoT measurement solutions in the literature,they did not evaluate any individual one to figure out their respective measurement strengths and *** study provides a novel scheme for the evaluation of proposed IoT measurement solutions using a metrology-coverage evaluation based on evaluation theory,metrology principles,and software measurement best *** evaluation approach was employed for 12 IoT measure categories and 158 IoT measurement solutions identified in a Systematic Literature Review(SLR)from 2010 to *** metrology coverage of these IoT measurement solutions was analyzed from four perspectives:across IoT categories,within each study,improvement over time,and implications for IoT practitioners and *** criteria in this metrology-coverage evaluation allowed for the identification of strengths and weaknesses in the theoretical and empirical definitions of the proposed IoT measurement *** found that the metrological coverage varies significantly across IoT measurement solution categories and did not show improvement over the 2010–2021 *** findings can help practitioners understand the limitations of the proposed measurement solutions and choose those with stronger *** evaluation results can also be used by researchers to improve current Io

Machine Learning Techniques for Software Maintainability Prediction:Accuracy Analysis

Maintaining software once implemented on the end-user side is laborious and,over its lifetime,is most often considerably more expensive than the initial software *** prediction of software maintainability lias emerged as an important research topic to address industry expectations for reducing costs,in particular,maintenance *** and practitioners have been working on proposing and identifying a variety of techniques ranging from statistical to machine learning(ML)for better prediction of software *** review has been carried out to analyze the empirical evidence on the accuracy of software product maintainability prediction(SPMP)using ML *** paper analyzes and discusses the findings of 77 selected studies published from 2000 to 2018 according to the following criteria:maintainability prediction techniques,validation methods,accuracy criteria,overall accuracy of ML techniques,and the techniques offering the best *** review process followed the well-known syslematic review *** results show that ML techniques are frequently used in predicting *** particular,artificial neural network(ANN),support vector machine/regression(SVM/R).regression&decision trees(DT),and fuzzy neuro fuzzy(FNF)techniques are more accurate in terms of PRED and *** N-fold and leave-one-out cross-validation methods,and the MMRE and PRED accuracy criteria are frequently used in empirical *** general,ML techniques outperformed non-machine learning techniques,e.g.,regression analysis(RA)techniques,while FNF outperformed SVM/*** ANN in most ***,while many techniques were reported superior,no specific one can be identified as the best.

Developing Project Duration Models in Software Engineering

Based on the empirical analysis of data contained in the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group （ISBSG） repository, this paper presents software engineering project duration models based on project effort. Duration models are built for the entire dataset and for subsets of projects developed for personal computer, mid-range and mainframe platforms. Duration models are also constructed for projects requiring fewer than 400 person-hours of effort and for projects requiring more than 400 person-hours of effort. The usefulness of adding the maximum number of assigned resources as a second independent variable to explain duration is also analyzed. The opportunity to build duration models directly from project functional size in function points is investigated as well.

Cyberattacks are difficult to prevent because the targeted companies and organizations are often relying on new and fundamentally insecure cloudbased technologies,such as the Internet of *** increasing industry adoption and migration of traditional computing services to the cloud,one of the main challenges in cybersecurity is to provide mechanisms to secure these *** work proposes a Data Security Framework for cloud computing services(CCS)that evaluates and improves CCS data security from a software engineering perspective by evaluating the levels of security within the cloud computing paradigm using engineering methods and techniques applied to *** framework is developed by means of a methodology based on a heuristic theory that incorporates knowledge generated by existing works as well as the experience of their *** paper presents the design details of the framework,which consists of three stages:identification of data security requirements,management of data security risks and evaluation of data security performance in CCS.

An experimental study on the conversion between IFPUG and UCP functional size measurement units

The use of functional size measurement(FSM) methods in software development organizations is growing during the years. Also, object oriented(OO) techniques have become quite a standard to design the software and, in particular, Use Cases is one of the most used techniques to specify functional requirements. Main FSM methods do not include specific rules to measure the software functionality from its Use Cases analysis. To deal with this issue some other methods like Kramer's functional measurement method have been developed. Therefore, one of the main issues for those organizations willing to use OO functional measurement method in order to facilitate the use cases count procedure is how to convert their portfolio functional size from the previously adopted FSM method towards the new method. The objective of this research is to find a statistical relationship for converting the software functional size units measured by the International Function Point Users Group(IFPUG) function point analysis(FPA) method into Kramer-Smith's use cases points(UCP) method and vice versa. Methodologies for a correct data gathering are proposed and results obtained are analyzed to draw the linear and non-linear equations for this correlation. Finally, a conversion factor and corresponding conversion intervals are given to establish the statistical relationship.

Software Engineering Principles: Do They Meet Engineering Criteria?

As a discipline, software engineering is not as mature as other engineering disciplines, and it still lacks consensus on a well-recognized set of fundamental principles. A 2006 analysis surveyed and analyzed 308 separate proposals for principles of software engineering, of which only thirty-four met the criteria to be recognized as such. This paper reports on a further analysis of these thirty-four candidate principles using two sets of engineering criteria derived from: A) the engineering categories of knowledge defined by Vincenti in his analysis of engineering foundations;and B) the joint IEEE and ACM software engineering curriculum. The outcome of this analysis is a proposed set of nine software engineering principles that conform to engineering criteria.

Extending Extreme Programming User Stories to Meet ISO 9001 Formality Requirements

For software organizations needing ISO 9001 certification, including those that have adopted agile methodologies, it is important that their software life cycle processes be able to manage the requirements imposed by this certification standard. However, the user stories in the XP agile methodology do not provide auditors with enough evidence that certain steps and activities have been performed in compliance with ISO 9001. This paper proposes an extension to the user story, based on four sub processes related to the CMMI-DEV model: 1) identification of the source of the user story;2) categorization of the non functional requirements;3) identification of the user story relationships;and 4) prioritization of the user stories. These sub processes are aligned with the XP release planning phase, and enhance the ability of user stories to accumulate the information that is mandatory for achieving ISO 9001 certification.

The ISBSG Software Project Repository: An Analysis from Six Sigma Measurement Perspective for Software Defect Estimation

The International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) provides to researchers and practitioners a repository of software projects’ data that has been used to date mostly for benchmarking and project estimation purposes, but rarely for software defects analysis. Sigma, in statistics, measures how far a process deviates from its goal. Six Sigma focuses on reducing variations within processes, because such variations may lead to an inconsistency in achieving projects’ specifications which represent “defects”, which mean not meeting customers’ satisfaction. Six Sigma provides two methodologies to solve organizations’ problems: “Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control” process cycle (DMAIC) and Design of Six Sigma (DFSS). The DMAIC focuses on improving the existed processes, while the DFSS focuses on redesigning the existing processes and developing new processes. This paper presents an approach to provide an analysis of ISBSG repository based on Six Sigma measurements. It investigates the use of the ISBSG data repository with some of the related Six Sigma measurement aspects, including Sigma defect measurement and software defect estimation. This study presents the dataset preparation consisting of two levels of data preparations, and then analyzed the quality-related data fields in the ISBSG MS-Excel data extract (Release 12 - 2013). It also presents an analysis of the extracted dataset of software projects. This study has found that the ISBSG MS-Excel data extract has a high ratio of missing data within the data fields of “Total Number of Defects” variable, which represents a serious challenge when the ISBSG dataset is being used for software defect estimation.
