We present a new method for determining the age and relative contribution of different stellar populations in galaxies based on the genetic *** apply this method to the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3384,using CCD images in U,B,V,R and I *** analysis indicates that the galaxy NGC 3384 is mainly inhabited by old stellar population(age〉10^9 yr).Some problems were encountered when numerical simulations are used for determining the contribution of different stellar populations in the integrated color of a *** results show that the proposed genetic algorithm can search efficiently through the very large space of the possible ages.

microstructural study and numerical simulation of phase decomposition of heat treated Co–Cu alloys

The influence of heat treatment on the phase decomposition and the grain size of Co–10 at% Cu alloy were studied. Few samples were aged in a furnace for either 3 or 5 h and then quenched in iced water. The materials and phase compositions were investigated using energy dispersive spectrometry and X-ray diffraction techniques. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the samples contained Co, Cu, Cu O, Co Cu2O3, Co Cu O2 phases in different proportions depending on the heat treatment regimes. The formation of dendrite Co phase rendered the spinodal decomposition while the oxidations prevent the initiation of the spinodal decomposition even for a deep long aging inside the miscibility *** the Bragg reflections from different phases of Co–Cu alloy significantly overlap, the crystal structural parameters were refined with FULLPROF program. The shifts in the refined lattice constants(a, b and c), the space group and the grain size were found to be phase- and heat treatment-dependant. Two-dimensional computer simulations were conducted to study the phase decomposition of Co–Cu binary alloy *** excess free energy as well as the strain energy, without a priori knowledge of the shape or the position of the new phase, was precisely evaluated. The results indicate that the morphology and the shape of the microstructure agree with SEm observation.

Genotoxicity Tests and Their Contributions in Aquatic Environmental Research

As many chemicals with genotoxic potential are emitted to surface water, genotoxicity tests are gaining importance which led to the development of several techniques to detect directly DNA damage. The relevance of detecting the genotoxic risks associated with water pollution was firstly perceived in the late 1970s. Since that time several tests have been developed for evaluating DNA alterations in aquatic animals. These tests rely on the premise that any changes to DNA may have long-lasting and profound consequences. Sister chromatid test, chromosome aberrations, comet assay, and micronucleus test are currently the most widely employed methods to detect DNA lesions in ecotoxicology. Chromosomal aberration and sister chromatid exchanges are time consuming, resource intensive and require proliferating cell population. Hence, Comet assay and micronucleus test as cost effective and more sensitive test systems have now been introduced for assessing the genotoxicity of chemicals. This review presents a synthesis of the state of the art in the methodologies of comet assay and micronucleus test and their contributions in aquatic environmental research. The text explores the latest knowledge and thinking on these very important approaches for the assessment of environmental health, management, and conservation. The primary concern of the present review is the measurement of genotoxic potential in aquatic organisms under field and laboratory conditions, where effects of chemicals at different levels of biological organization can be examined.

Biomarkers in Nile Tilapia <i>Oreochromis niloticus niloticus</i>(Linnaeus, 1758) to Assess the Impacts of River Nile Pollution: Bioaccumulation, Biochemical and Tissues Biomarkers

The use of biomarkers has become an important tool for modern environmental assessment as they can help to predict pollutants involved in the monitoring program. Here I present data on bioaccumulation, biochemical and tissues biomarkers in Nile tilapia as early warning indicators of river Nile pollution. Nile tilapia sampled from downstream sites accumulated higher levels of all the detected heavy metals than those collected from upstream sites. Heavy metal residues in the tissues of Nile tilapia exhibited different patterns of accumulation and distribution among the selected tissues. Remarkable alterations in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the tissues of Nile tilapia were detected. These alterations were followed, in the present study, by the occurrence of histological lesions in liver and gill tissues of fish collected from the same sites. Alterations in bioaccumulation patterns, in enzyme activities and in histology go in parallel with the elevation in the levels of water chemical parameters detected in the downstream sites as a result of pollution stress in these areas. These results provide evidence that bioaccumulation, biochemical and tissues biomarkers can be sensitive indicators of exposure to mixed pollutants in surface waters.

The Response of the Earth's Lower Ionosphere to Gamma-Ray Solar Flares and their Associated X-ray

The present work aims to explore the impact of solar gamma-ray fiares(GRFs),detected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope(LAT),and their associated X-ray fiares(XRFs)on the Earth’s lower *** data of ionospheric parameter fmin were collected from the Yamagawa mid-latitude ionosonde station in *** most of the GRFs used in this study are associated with soft X-ray(SXR)emissions,detected by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite(GOES),we classified them into three types:simultaneous(S),delayed(D)and not associated(N),refiecting the phase occurrence of the solar ***,the ionospheric D layer responds strongly to XRFs more than *** temporal profiles of the ionospheric parameter fmin show distinct behaviors as a response to the various GRF *** the case of the S-type,a single strong peak,with an average value of 5.2 mHz,emanates in the fmin profile within an average interval of time of less than half an *** the case of the D-type,two successive peaks appear in the fmin profile,with an average value of 6.0 mHz for the second peak through a time interval of one hour after the onset of gamma-ray(GR)*** response of the fmin parameter to the N-type fiares appears as a single peak with an average value of 4.8 mHz within about an *** notice that the difference between the fmin peak values and the corresponding reference ones(dfmin)is more convenient and representative than the fmin values,where the median GR fiux of the S-,D-and N-types tends to increase as the average dfmin increases.
