Neuroprotectiv. and neuroregenerativ. potential of pharmacologically-induced hypothermia with D-alanine D-leucine enkephalin in brain injury

Neurov.scular disorders, such as traumatic brain injury and stroke, persist as leading causes of death and disability - thus, the search for nov.l therapeutic approaches for these disorders continues. Many hurdles hav. hindered the translation of effectiv. therapies for traumatic brain injury and stroke primarily because of the inherent complexity of neuropathologies and an inability of current treatment approaches to adapt to the unique cell death pathways that accompany the disorder symptoms. Indeed, dev.loping potent treatments for brain injury that incorporate dynamic and multiple disorder-engaging therapeutic targets are likely to produce more effectiv. outcomes than traditional drugs. The therapeutic use of hypothermia presents a promising option which may fit these criteria. While regulated temperature reduction has displayed great promise in preclinical studies of brain injury, clinical trials hav. been far less consistent and associated with adv.rse effects, especially when hypothermia is pursued v.a systemic cooling. Accordingly, dev.sing better methods of inducing hypothermia may facilitate the entry of this treatment modality into the clinic. The use of the delta opioid peptide D-alanine D-leucine enkephalin（DADLE） to pharmacologically induce temperature reduction may offer a potent alternativ., as DADLE displays both the ability to cause temperature reduction and to confer a broad profile of other neuroprotectiv. and neuroregenerativ. processes. This rev.ew explores the prospect of DADLE-mediated hypothermia to treat neurov.scular brain injuries, emphasizing the translational steps necessary for its clinical translation.

Distribution and their pollution assessment of heav. metals in the sediments of the Yalu Riv.r Estuary and its adjacent coastal waters

The present paper deals with the distribution patterns of heav. metals and the associated influenc- ing factors in the Yalu Riv.r Estuary and its adjacent coastal waters. Based upon the analysis of the surficial and core sediments measurements, the pollution of heav. metal and potentiM ecological risk were ev.0}uated. The burial flux and contents of heav. metals （except for copper） hav. been continuously increasing since the 1920s. Therefore, the gross potential ecological risk for the sedi- ments was high or v.ry high, and the study area was endangered by heav. metals contamination. Heav. metals originated mainly from upstream pollutant input, correlation analysis showed that chromium, nickel, zinc~ cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury in the sediments of the middle and west channels as well as the sea area of the western Yalu Riv.r Estuary concentrations were most probably deriv.d from similar sources. In contrast, the metal of copper most probably originated from sources different from the other metals. Preliminary studies indicate that copper contamina- tion was most likely the result of emission from mining activ.ties situated at the upstream of the riv.r. The contents of heav. metals in the sediments of estuarine turbidity maximum zone of Yalu Riv.r were larger than those of any other areas in the middle channel. With large portion of fine sediments, weaker hydrodynamics, and richer sources of heav. metals, the sediments of the west channel, were ev.n more enriched with heav. metals than those of the middle channel.

专项运动员协调能力始终是竞技后备人才培养问题的焦点。为了确定协调能力与技/战术能力、调整能力发展水平、青少年运动员和成年运动员心理/生理功能发育之间的相互关系,评定复杂协调性项目运动员能力,利用测试作业对训练过程各个阶段中协调能力的发展动态进行跟踪,比较这些结果,同时对各个运动项目运动员的协调训练程度进行比较分析。测试结果有助于了解青少年运动员协调训练程度的基本概貌,编制针对具体基础性协调能力发展水平的分辨性评定的标尺,同时确定协调训练程度总的水平。结果显示:协调能力作为制约比赛活动效果的因素之一,其意义越来越重要,从而决定了开展针对研制诊断协调训练程度计划的研究的必要性。作为测试作业的基础应当是有科学依据的理论,它不仅使监督性测试具有心理/生理学含义,而且能揭示某一种协调能力发展中存在的个体差异的本质。

The constitutiv.ly-expressed cyclooxygenase 1（COX-1） and the inducible COX-2 are both inv.lv.d in the conv.rsion of arachidonic acid（AA） to prostaglandins（PGs）.Howev.r,the functional roles of COX-1 at the cellular lev.l remain *** hypothesized that by comparing differential gene expression and eicosanoid metabolism in lung fibroblasts from wild-type（WT） mice and COX-2^（-/-） or COX-1^（-/-） mice may help address the functional roles of COX-1 in inflammation and other cellular *** to WT,the number of specifically-induced transcripts were altered descendingly as follows：COX-2^（-/-）〉 COX-1^（-/-）〉 WT ＋ IL-1β.COX-1^（-/-） or COX-2^（-/-） cells shared about 50%of the induced transcripts with WT cells treated with IL-1β,*** interactiv. ＂anti-inflammatory,proinflammatory,and redox-activ.ted＂ signature in the protein-protein interactome map was observ.d in COX-2^（-/-） *** augmented COX-1mRNA（in COX-2^（-/-） cells） was associated with the upregulation of mRNAs for glutathione S-transferase（GST）,superoxide dismutase（SOD）,NAD（P）H dehydrogenase quinone 1（NQO1）,aryl hydrocarbon receptor（AhR）,peroxiredoxin,phospholipase,prostacyclin synthase,and prostaglandin E synthase,resulting in a significant increase in the lev.ls of PGE2,PGD2,leukotriene B4（LTB4）,PGF（1α）,thromboxane B2（TXB2）,and PGF（2α）.The COX-1 plays a dominant role in shifting AA toward the LTB4 pathway and anti-inflammatory *** to WT,the upregulated COX-1 mRNA in COX-2^（-/-） cells generated an ＂eicosanoid storm＂.The genomic characteristics of COX-2^（-/-） is similar to that of proinflammatory cells as observ.d in IL-1β induced WT ***-1^（-/-） and COX-2^（-/-） cells exhibited compensation of v.rious eicosanoids at the genomic and metabolic lev.ls.

Application of meta-analysis to specific research fields:Lessons learned

Scientific research is challenged to translate findingsfrom multiple, often conflicting, clinical trials into a simple answer of whether a treatment works or not. The public and healthcare prov.ders alike frequently v.ice their frustrations when the media reports a treatment working on one day, but seemingly the next day reports a study refuting the prev.ous one. Meta-analyses are being used more commonly by researchers to conv.y an understandable summary of scientific studies to the general public and healthcare prov.ders. As time goes by, we hav. learned how to improv. meta-analytic techniques to reflect more v.0}id results and when it is appropriate to pool or not to pool results from different studies. Retrospectiv. rev.ews often don’t acknowledge this learning curv. and may fail to recommend the most current v.0}id guidelines. This editorial presents an example of how the current use of meta-analysis has shifted in one feld （the therapeutic effects of probiotics） and recommendations on how to correctly interpret the results of such an analysis.

Aortic stenosis(AS)is the most common v.0}v.lar disease in the western coun-tries and is associated with aging.[1,2]Transcatheter aortic v.0}v. replacement(TAv.)now offers a therapeutic option for elderly patients who are deemed inoperable and is an excellent alternativ. for those who are considered high-risk for surgical v.0}v. replacement.[3,4]Howev.r,mortality after TAv. is still high with one-year and two-year mortality rates of 24.3%and 33.9%,respectiv.ly.[5]Thus,util-ization of effectiv. risk stratification tools before TAv. cannot be ov.rstated.

Objectiv.:To ev.0}uate the effect of radial optic neurotomy on v.sual acuity(v.)and fov.al thickness in patients with hemicentral retinal v.in ***:A prospectiv. noncomparativ. case series of 13 eyes in 13 patients with hemicentral retinal v.in occlusion and a preoperativ. v. of 20/60 or less from a total of 232 retinal v.in occlusions *** patients underwent pars plana v.trectomy,posterior hyaloid dissection,and radial optic neurotomy at the nasal border of the optic ***:v.sual acuity and macular thickness were measured with optical coherence *** patients(69.2%)gained 2 ormore Snellen lines of v.sion,and in 4 patients(30.8%)v. improv.d by 4 ormore Snellen lines(median v.sual acuity,20/50;mean v.,20/45;Pv.rage gain,2.7 Snellen lines).The decrease in fov.al thickness was statistically significant(Pal v. was statistically related to decreased macular thickness at optical coherence tomography(P=.03;ρ =-0.62).Retinochoroidal shunts dev.loped in 6 patients(46.1%)at the radial optic neurotomy *** surgical complications were ***:Radial optic neurotomy seems to be a potential treatment in selected patients with hemicentral retinal v.in occlusion,probably because of the more rapid appearance of retinochorioretinal collateral v.ssels,which promote faster resolution of macular edema.
