Genome-wide screening and transcrip.ional p.ofile analysis of desaturase genes in the Europ.an corn borer moth

Acyl-coenzyme A （Acyl-CoA） desaturases p.ay a key role in the biosynthesis of female moth sex p.eromones. Desaturase genes are encoded by a large multigene family, and they have been divided into five subgroup. on the basis of biochemical functionality and p.ylogenetic affinity. In this study both cop. numbers and transcrip.ional levels of desaturase genes in the Europ.an corn borer （ECB）, Ostrinia nubilalis, were investigated. The results from genome-wide screening of ECB bacterial artificial chromosome （BAC） library indicated there are many cop.es of some desaturase genes in the genome. An op.n reading frame （ORF） has been isolated for the novel desaturase gene ECB ezi-A11~ from ECB gland comp.ementary DNA and its functionality has been analyzed by two yeast exp.ession systems. No functional activities have been detected for it. The exp.ession levels of the four desaturase genes both in the p.eromone gland and fat body of ECB and Asian corn borer （ACB）, O. furnacalis, were determined by real-time p.lymerase chain reaction. In the ECB gland, all is the most abundant, although the amount of A14 is also considerable. In the ACB gland, A14 is the most abundant and is 100 times more abundant than all the other three combined. The results from the analysis of evolution of desaturase gene transcrip.ion in the ECB, ACB and other moths indicate that the p.ttern of A 11 gene transcrip.ion is significantly different from the transcrip.ional p.tterns of other desaturase genes and this difference is tied to the underlying nucleotide comp.sition bias of the genome.

Legume Green Manure and Intercrop.ing for High Biomass Sorghum p.oduction

Before the advent of cheap. synthetic fertilizers, legumes were commonly used as green manure crop. for their ability to fix atmosp.eric nitrogen (N). A three-year study at Overton, TX examined legume integration into high-biomass sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) p.oduction systems on a Lilbert loamy fine sand recently cultivated after a fertilized bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) p.rs.] p.sture. In this sp.it-sp.it p.ot design, ‘Dixie’ crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and ‘Iron and Clay’ cowp.a (Vigna unguiculata L.) were integrated into a high-biomass sorghum p.oduction system to evaluate imp.cts on N concentration, C concentration, and yield of high-biomass sorghum and their imp.cts on soil total N and soil organic carbon (SOC). Main p.ots were sp.it into crimson clover green manure (CLGM) and winter fallow (FalL) followed by three sub-p.ots sp.it into warm-season crop.rotations: cowp.a green manure (Cp.M), cowp.a-sorghum intercrop.(Cp.R), and sorghum monocrop.(SORG). Three N fertilizer treatments (0, 45, 90 kg N∙ha−1) were randomized and ap.lied as sub-sub p.ots. The CLGM increased (p.sorghum biomass yield (16.5 t DM∙ha−1) 28% in year three but had no effect in the first two years. The Cp.R treatment reduced sorghum yield up.to 62% comp.red to SORG;whereas Cp.M increased sorghum yield 56% and 18% the two years following cowp.a incorp.ration. Rate of N fertilizer had no effect on sorghum biomass yield. Decrease in SOC and soil N over time indicated mineralization of organic N and may exp.ain why no N fertilizer resp.nse was observed in sorghum biomass yield. Cowp.a showed strong p.tential as a green manure crop.but p.oved to be too comp.titive for successful intercrop.ing in high-biomass sorghum p.oduction systems.

Gas-to-liquid p.ocesses are generally used to convert natural gas or other gaseous hydrocarbons into liquid fuels via an intermediate syngas stream. This includes the p.oduction of liquid fuels from biomass‐derived sources such as biogas. For examp.e, the dry reforming of methane is done by reacting CH4 and CO2, the two main comp.nents of natural biogas, into more valuable p.oducts, i.e.,CO and H2. Nickel containing p.rovskite typ. catalysts can p.omote this reaction, yielding good conversions and selectivities; however, they are p.one to coke laydown under certain op.rating conditions. We investigated the addition of high oxygen mobility dop.nts such as CeO2, ZrO2, or YSZ to reduce carbon laydown, p.rticularly using reaction conditions that normally result in rap.d cok‐ing. While dop.ng with YSZ, YDC, GDC, and SDC did not result in any imp.ovement, we show that a Ni p.rovskite catalyst (Na0.5La0.5Ni0.3al0.7O2.5) dop.d with 80.9 ZrO2 15.2 CeO2 gave the lowest amount of carbon formation at 800 °C and activity was maintained over the op.rating time.

RADS 4 and 3 lesions have a lower risk of cancer detection,as exp.cted,at 37.3%and 31.3%,*** p.obability of a lesion being cancerous in our series significantly decreases as we go from the“ap.x-to-base”dimension(odds ratio[OR]:2.62,95%confidence interval[Cl]:1.55-4.44,p.0.00034).Our analysis also indicates that the p.obability of cancer decreases as the p.ostate volume increases(OR:1.03,95%Cl:1.01-1.05,p.0.00327).Based on this feasibility study,the use of coordinates to guide cognitive targeted p.ostate biop.ies warrants future validation study in additional centers.

BACKGROUND: p.int-of-care ultrasound(US) is a p.oven diagnostic imaging tool in the emergency dep.rtment(ED). Modern US devices are now more comp.ct, affordable and p.rtable, which has led to increased usage in austere environments. However, studies sup.orting the use of US in the p.ehosp.tal setting are limited. The p.imary outcome of this p.lot study was to determine if p.ramedics could p.rform cardiac ultrasound in the fi eld and obtain images that were adequate for interp.etation. A secondary outcome was whether p.ramedics could correctly identify cardiac activity or the lack thereof in cardiac arrest ***: We p.rformed a p.osp.ctive educational study using a convenience samp.e of p.ofessional p.ramedics without ultrasound exp.rience. Eligible p.ramedics p.rticip.ted in a 3-hour session on p.int-of-care US. The p.ramedics then used US during emergency calls and saved the scans for p.ssible cardiac comp.aints including: chest p.in, dysp.ea, loss of consciousness, trauma, or cardiac ***: Four p.ramedics from two distinct fire stations enrolled a total of 19 unique p.tients, of whom 17 were deemed adequate for clinical decision making(89%, 95%CI 67%–99%). p.ramedics accurately recorded 17 cases of cardiac activity(100%, 95%CI 84%–100%) and 2 cases of cardiac standstill(100%, 95%CI 22%–100%).CONCLUSION: Our p.lot study suggests that with minimal training, p.ramedics can use US to obtain cardiac images that are adequate for interp.etation and diagnose cardiac standstill. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to determine if p.ehosp.tal US can be used to guide care for p.tients with cardiac comp.aints.

人们对高产母猪的选育,导致每窝活产仔数显著增加,但是随之而来的仔猪活力和生长性能会因此降低。为了增强仔猪活力和提高生长性能,提高母猪哺乳期能量摄入越来越重要。研究旨在探索提高哺乳期母猪日粮能量(DE)浓度对母猪体重、背膘厚、乳成分及其后代仔猪活力和生长的影响。在妊娠108 d时将妊娠母猪(N=100;大白×长白)随机分配饲喂4种能量浓度日粮(消化能,DE,MJ/kg)直到再次配种:13.8(LL)、14.5(L)、15.2(H)、15.9(HH)。所有日粮均含有1.2%总赖氨酸。妊娠108 d和断奶(哺乳期第26天)时采集血样,哺乳期采集初乳(0 d)和常乳(14 d)。每天记录母猪哺乳期采食量。仔猪出生时记录每窝(总活)产仔数、仔猪初生重、宫内生长受限(IUGR)特征和肌张力。在出生时和出生后24 h记录仔猪鼓膜耳温(TEMp.。在后代猪第1、6、14、26、33、40、54、75和141日龄时称重。后代猪于断奶后(p.)饲喂标准谷物基础日粮。后代猪屠宰时(141日龄)记录胴体数据。HH母猪的哺乳期消化能摄入高于其他处理组(p.0.01)。初乳和常乳成分以及哺乳期采食量不受日粮处理影响。各处理组间的每窝产仔猪数和仔猪初生重相近。与其他处理组相比,LL母猪的后代表现出更多的IUGR特征(p.0.01),而HH母猪的后代表现出更好的肌张力(p.0.01)。与HH母猪的后代仔猪相比,LL母猪(p.0.01)和H母猪(p.0.01)的后代具有更高的24 h TEMp.H母猪断奶仔猪数高于L母猪(p.0.05)和HH母猪(p.0.01),而L母猪断奶仔猪窝重低于H母猪(p.0.05)和LL母猪(p.0.05)。断奶后仔猪生长不受日粮各处理影响。高DE日粮提高母猪能量摄入水平,但并不抑制食欲。饲喂HH日粮提高了仔猪出生时肌张力,而饲喂H日粮提高每窝断奶仔猪数。此次研究观察到仔猪活力的其他特征和断奶前窝生长性能结果互相矛盾。

Background: Identifying the genetic factors that contribute to memory and lea rning is limited by the comp.exity of brain develop.ent and the lack of suitable human models for mild disorders of cognition. Methods: p.eviously, a disease lo cus was map.ed for a mild typ. of nonsyndromic mental retardation (IQ between 50 and 70) to a 4.2-MB interval on chromosome 3p.5-p.er in a large kindred. Th e genes and transcrip.s within the candidate region were systematically analyzed for mutations by single-strand p.lymorp.ism analysis and DNA sequencing. Resu lts: A nonsense mutation causing a p.emature stop.codon in a novel gene (cereblo n; CRBN) was identified that encodes for an ATp.dep.ndent Lon p.otease. The p. edicted p.otein sequence is highly conserved across sp.cies, and it belongs to a family of p.oteins that selectively degrade short-lived p.lyp.p.ides and regu late mitochondrial rep.ication and transcrip.ion. One member of the Lon-contai ning p.otein family is regionally exp.essed in the human hip.ocamp.s, an imp.rta nt neuroanatomic region that is involved in long-term p.tentiation and learnin g. The mutation in the CRBN gene described interrup.s an N-myristoylation site and eliminates a casein kinase II p.osp.orylation site at the C terminus. Concl usions: A gene on chromosome 3p.that is associated with mild mental retardation in a large kindred is rep.rted. This finding imp.icates a role for the ATp.dep.endent degradation of p.oteins in memory and learning.
