Comparative study between three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts for antimicrobial applications

The design of nanostructured materials occupies a privileged position in the development and management of affordable and effective technology in the antibacterial sector.here,we discuss the antimicrobial properties of three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts materials of graphene oxide(GO),reduced graphene oxide(RGO),and single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)that have a mechano-bactericidal effect,and the ability to piercing or slicing bacterial membranes.To demonstrate the significance of size,morphology and composition on the antibacterial activity mechanism,the designed nanomaterials have been characterized.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC),standard agar well diffusion,and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to evaluate the antibacterial activity of GO,RGO,and SWCNTs.Based on the evidence obtained,the three carbonaceous materials exhibit activity against all microbial strains tested by completely encapsulating bacterial cells and causing morphological disruption by degrading the microbial cell membrane in the order of RGO>GO>SWCNTs.Because of the external cell wall structure and outer membrane proteins,the synthesized carbonaceous nanomaterials exhibited higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains than Gram-negative and fungal microorganisms.RGO had the lowest MIC values(0.062,0.125,and 0.25 mg/mL against B.subtilis,S.aureus,and E.coli,respectively),as well as minimum fungal concentrations(0.5 mg/mL for both A.fumigatus and C.albicans).At 12 hr,the cell viability values against tested microbial strains were completely suppressed.Cell lysis and death occurred as a result of severe membrane damage caused by microorganisms perched on RGO nanoblades.Our work gives an insight into the design of effective graphene-based antimicrobial materials for water treatment and remediation.

Effect of using ascorbic acid and cysteamine supplementation onin-vitrodevelopment of buffalo embryos

Objective:To improvein vitro embryo production in buffalo by supplementation of L-ascorbic acid during maturation and development (experiment 1) and combination with another antioxidant as cysteamine (experiment 2).Methods:Two experiments were performed, the first one aimed to evaluate the different concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100 μM) of L-ascorbic acid on embryo developmental rate of buffalo oocytes. The L-ascorbic acid was added to the maturation and culture media. In the second experiment, oocytes were cultured in media with two type of antioxidant (ascorbic acid + cysteamine) or ascorbic acid only.Results:There was a significant increase in cleavage rate at 25, 50 μM than 100 μM and control group. But, the blastocyst rate was higher at 50 μM ascorbic acid than other concentrations (0, 25, 100 μM). Supplementation of ascorbic acid and cysteamine to maturation and cultured media improved embryo development than ascorbic acid alone.Conclusions: Using of 50 μM L-ascorbic acid duringin vitro maturation and development improve the developmental competence of buffalo oocytes, this effect was increase with the presence of cysteamine.

Side lobe level reduction(SLL)of antenna arrays significantly enhances the signal-to-interference ratio and improves the quality of service(QOS)in recent and future wireless communication systems starting from 5G up to 7G.Furthermore,it improves the array gain and directivity,increasing the detection range and angular resolution of radar systems.This study proposes two highly efficient SLL reduction techniques.These techniques are based on the hybridization between either the single convolution or the double convolution algorithms and the genetic algorithm(GA)to develop the Conv/GA andDConv/GA,respectively.The convolution process determines the element’s excitations while the GA optimizes the element spacing.For M elements linear antenna array(LAA),the convolution of the excitation coefficients vector by itself provides a new vector of excitations of length N=(2M−1).This new vector is divided into three different sets of excitations including the odd excitations,even excitations,and middle excitations of lengths M,M−1,andM,respectively.When the same element spacing as the original LAA is used,it is noticed that the odd and even excitations provide a much lower SLL than that of the LAA but with amuch wider half-power beamwidth(hPBW).While the middle excitations give the same hPBWas the original LAA with a relatively higher SLL.Tomitigate the increased hPBWof the odd and even excitations,the element spacing is optimized using the GA.Thereby,the synthesized arrays have the same hPBW as the original LAA with a two-fold reduction in the SLL.Furthermore,for extreme SLL reduction,the DConv/GA is introduced.In this technique,the same procedure of the aforementioned Conv/GA technique is performed on the resultant even and odd excitation vectors.It provides a relatively wider hPBWthan the original LAA with about quad-fold reduction in the SLL.

Objective:To evaluate the combination therapy of pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate against Babesia in vitro and in vivo.Methods:Bioinformatic analysis was performed using atom pair fingerprints.An in vitro combination test was performed against Babesia bovis and Theileria equi.Moreover,the in vivo chemotherapeutic efficacy of pyronaridine tetraphosphate in combination with diminazene aceturate was investigated against the growth of Babesia microti in mice using a fluorescence inhibitory assay.Results:Pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate exhibited nearly similar molecular weights.The in vitro combination of pyronaridine tetraphosphate and diminazene aceturate was synergistic on Babesia bovis and additive on Theileria equi.In addition,5 mg/kg pyronaridine tetraphosphate combined with 10 mg/kg diminazene aceturate inhibited Babesia microti growth significantly compared with those observed after treatment with 25 mg/kg diminazene aceturate alone from day 6 post treatment to day 12 post treatment.The combination therapy also normalized the hematological parameters of infected mice.Conclusions:An oral dose of pyronaridine tetraphosphate combined with a subcutaneous dose of diminazene aceturate inhibits Babesia in vitro and in mice,suggesting it might be a new paradigm for the treatment of babesiosis.

Effect of buffalo bull breeds on developmental competence and vitrification ofin-vitro produced embryos

Objective:To assess effect of buffalo bull breed on the development and cryotolerence of the in vitro produced embryos.Methods: Three types of frozen semen were adopted;Egyptian, Italian and cross-bred (Egyptian-Italian) breeds were used for in-vitro fertilization and vitrification of their embryos. Oocytes were collected from buffalo ovaries and maturedin vitrofor 24 h, then they were fertilized using the three semen breeds. The produced embryos of morula and blastocysts were vitrified using ethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide then evaluated for their viability after warming.Results: The cleavage and blastocysts rates significantly declined in oocytes fertilized by Egyptian (Phan in Italian (Phere were no significant differences among the three breeds in the percentages of morphologically viable embryos evaluated directly after warming and at 24 h post-culture. Conclusions:Thein vitro fertilization response to frozen-thawed semen varies between breeds;however, the resistance of produced embryos to the damage effect of vitrification does not vary.

electrochemical anodization of cast titanium alloys in oxalic acid for biomedical applications

Titanium and its alloys have numerous biomedical applications thanks to the composition and morphology of their oxide film.In this study,the colorful oxide films were formed by anodizing cast Ti-6al-4V and Ti-6al-7Nb alloys in a 10%oxalic acid solution for 30 s at different voltages(20–80 V)of a direct current power supply.Atomic force microscopy was used as an accurate tool to measure the surface roughness of thin films on the nanometer scale.Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were performed to analyze surface morphology and phase structure.According to the results,the produced titanium oxide layer showed high surface roughness,which increased with increasing anodizing voltage.The impact of anodizing voltages on the color and roughness of anodized layers was surveyed.The corrosion resistance of the anodized samples was studied in simulated body fluid at ph 7.4 and a temperature of 37℃ utilizing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the potentiodynamic polarization method.The anodized samples for both alloys at 40 V were at the optimal voltage,leading to a TiO_(2) layer formation with the best compromise between oxide thickness and corrosion resistance.also,findings showed that TiO_(2) films produced on Ti-6al-7Nb alloys had superior surface roughness properties compared to those of Ti-6al-4V alloys,making them more appropriate for orthopedic applications.From the obtained data and the fruitful discussion,it was found that the utilized procedure is simple,low-cost,and repeatable.Therefore,anodization in 10%oxalic acid proved a viable alternative for the surface finishing of titanium alloys for biomedical applications.

Evaluating the influence of a structured nursing protocol on targeted outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis patients

Objective:Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)requires comprehensive management.Structured nursing protocols may enhance outcomes,but evidence is limited.This study evaluated the effect of a structured nursing protocol on RA outcomes.Materials and Methods:In this one-group pre-post study,30 Egyptian RA patients completed assessments before and after a 12-week nursing protocol comprising education,psychosocial support,and self-management promotion.Assessments included clinical evaluation of joint counts,erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR),and C-reactive protein(CRP)and patient-reported Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale(ASES),health Assessment Questionnaire(hAQ),Visual Analog Scale(VAS)for pain,and hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(hADS).Results:The study demonstrated significant improvements in both clinical-and patient-reported outcomes.Joint count decreased from 18.4±4.2 to 14.2±3.8(Ph to 25.5±6.8 mm/h(Pels from 15.2±3.6 mg/L to 11.8±2.9 mg/L(Phowed a marked increase in ASES score from 140±25 to 170±30(PhAQ from 1.6±0.4 to 1.3±0.3(PhADS anxiety and depression scores from 11±3 to 8±2(Pely.Conclusion:A structured nursing protocol significantly improved clinical disease activity,physical functioning,pain,self-efficacy,and emotional well-being in RA patients.A multifaceted nursing intervention appears beneficial for optimizing RA outcomes.

During the early phase of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),diagnosis was difficult due to the diversity in symptoms and imaging findings and the variability of disease presentation.Pulmonary manifestations are reportedly the main clinical presentations of COVID-19 patients.Scientists are working hard on a myriad of clinical,epidemiological,and biological aspects to better understand SARS-CoV-2 infection,aiming to mitigate the ongoing disaster.Many reports have documented the involvement of various body systems and organs apart from the respiratory tract including the gastrointestinal,liver,immune system,renal,and neurological systems.Such involvement will result in diverse presentations related to effects on these systems.Other presentations such as coagulation defects and cutaneous manifestation may also occur.Patients with specific comorbidities including obesity,diabetes,and hypertension have increased morbidity and mortality risks with COVID-19.

An Optimized Deep Learning Approach for Improving Airline Services

The aviation industry is one of the most competitive markets. Themost common approach for airline service providers is to improve passengersatisfaction. Passenger satisfaction in the aviation industry occurs whenpassengers’ expectations are met during flights. Airline service quality iscritical in attracting new passengers and retaining existing ones. It is crucialto identify passengers’ pain points and enhance their satisfaction with theservices offered. The airlines used a variety of techniques to improve servicequality. They used data analysis approaches to analyze the passenger pointdata. These solutions have focused simply on surveys;consequently, deeplearningapproaches have received insufficient attention. In this study, deepneural networks with the adaptive moment estimation Adam optimizationalgorithm were applied to enhance classification performance. In previousstudies, the quality of the dataset has been ignored. The proposed approachwas applied to the airline passenger satisfaction dataset from the Kagglerepository. It was validated by applying artificial neural networks (ANNs),random forests, and support vector machine techniques to the same dataset. Itwas compared with other research papers that used the same dataset and had asimilar problem. The experimental results showed that the proposed approachoutperformed previous studies. It has achieved an accuracy of 99.3%.

Tier-based approach to establish a culture of biosafety at a medical microbiology research laboratory in Egypt

Microbiology Research Laboratory(MRL)is a biosafety level-2(BSL-2)research laboratory located at the main campus of Faculty of Medicine,Ain Shams University(ASU)in Cairo.With the objective of strengthening the departmental capacities of biosafety,a series of activities were carried out between October 2019,and January 2020 to raise awareness,along with instilling standard biosafety practices and procedures among laboratory staff including non-health professions.MRL staff were categorized according to their biosafety knowledge into three tiers:tier(1):with zero to minimal knowledge,tier(2):with basic knowledge,tier(3):with satisfactory knowledge.Tier based activities were designed to align with their job responsibilities.Results:44 selected laboratory staff were trained on biosafety practices:12 from tier(1),19 from tier(2)and 13 constituted tier(3).Through regular follow-ups,the impact of the implemnted training plan was reflected on the practices and knowledge of all laboratory staff.Knowledge among health professions has increased by 60%.Furthermore,6 staff members have granted a biosafety certification by International Federation of Biosafety Association(IFBSA).Conclusion:establishing a culture of biosafety within microbiology research laboratories is integral to safe research practices.Together with developing local and national biosafety regulations and policies will ensure research advancement without compromising public health or environmental safety.
