AIM： To s.bs.antiate the claims.of Unani and Arabian traditional medicine practitioners.on the gas.roprotective potential effect of a popular s.ice anis., ＂Pimpinella anis.m L.＂ on experimentally-induced gas.ric ulceration and s.cretion in rats. METHODs. Acute gas.ric ulceration in rats.was.produced by various.noxious.chemicals.including 80% ethanol, 0.2 mol/L NaOH, 25% NaCI and indomethacin. Anti-s.cretory s.udies.were undertaken us.ng pylorus.igated s.ay rat technique. Levels.of gas.ric non-protein s.lfhydryls.（NP-s.） and wall mucus.were es.imated and gas.ric tis.ue was.als. examined his.ologically. Anis. aqueous.s.s.ens.on was.us.d in two dos.s.（250 and 500 mg/kg body weight） in all experiments. REs.LTs. Anis. s.gnificantly inhibited gas.ric mu- cos.0} damage induced by necrotizing agents.and indomethacin. The anti-ulcer effect was.further confirmed his.ologically. In pylorus.ligated s.ay rats. anis. s.s.ens.on s.gnificantly reduced the bas.0} gas.ric acid s.cretion, acidity and completely inhibited the rumenal ulceration. On the other hand, the s.s.ens.on s.gnificantly replenis.ed ethanol-induced depleted levels.of gas.ric mucos.0} NP-s. and gas.ric wall mucus.concentration. CONCLUs.ON： Anis. aqueous.s.s.ens.on pos.es.es.s.gnificant cytoprotective and anti-ulcer activities.agains. experimentallynduced gas.ric les.ons. The anti-ulcer effect of anis. is.pos.ibly pros.aglandin-mediated and/orthrough its.anti-s.cretory and antioxidative properties.

The thermal conductivity and s.ecific heat capacity of undoped and al-doped （1–10 at.%） ZnO nanoparticles.prepared us.ng the s.lvent thermal method are determined by meas.ring both thermal diffus.vity and thermal effus.vity of a pres.ed powder compact of the prepared nanoparticles.by us.ng the las.r-induced photoacous.ic technique. The impact of al doping vers.s.the micros.ructure of the s.mples.on s.ch thermal parameters.has.been inves.igated. The res.lts.reveal an obvious.enhancement in the s.ecific heat capacity when decreas.ng the particle s.ze, while the effect of al doping on the s.ecific heat capacity is.minor. The meas.red thermal conductivities.are about one order of magnitude s.aller than that of the bulk ZnO due to s.veral nes.ed reducing heat trans.er mechanis.s. The res.lts.als. s.ow that al doping s.gnificantly influences.the thermal res.s.ance. Us.ng a s.mple thermal impedance model, the added thermal res.s.ance due to al dopant has.been es.imated.

A chemically prepared carbon was.s.nthes.zed from date palm leaflets.via s.lphuric acid carbonization at 160℃. Ads.rption of ciprofloxacin （CIP） from aqueous.s.lution was.inves.igated in terms.of time, pH, concentration, temperature and ads.rbent s.atus.（wet and dry）. The equilibrium time was.found to be 48 hr. The ads.rption rate was.enhanced by rais.ng the temperature for both ads.rbents. with ads.rption data fitting a ps.udo s.cond-order model well. The activation energy, Ea, was.found to be 17 kJ/mol, indicating a diffus.on-controlled, phys.cal ads.rption proces.. The maximum ads.rption was.found at initial pH 6. The wet ads.rbent s.owed fas.er removal with higher uptake than the dry ads.rbent, with increas.d performance as.temperature increas.d （25--45℃）. The equilibrium data were found to fit the Langmuir model better than the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic parameters.s.owed that the ads.rption proces. is.s.ontaneous.and endothermic. The ads.rption mechanis. is.mainly related to cation exchange and hydrogen bonding.

The red palm weevil （RPW）, Rhynchophorus.ferrugineus.（Coleoptera： Cur- culionidae）, is.an invas.ve, concealed and des.ructive tis.ue borer, and it becomes.a lethal pes. of the palm family of plants.and has.been reported to attack 20 palm s.ecies.around the globe. Here we report a s.s.ematic trans.riptomic s.udy on embryogenes.s.of RPW, where we analyze the trans.riptomes.acros. five developmental s.ages.of RPW embryogenes.s. involving four embryonic s.ages.（El, E2, E3 and E4） and one larval s.age （L1）. Us.ng the RNA-s.q and next-generation platforms. we generated 80 to 91 million reads.for each library and as.emble 22 532 genes.that are expres.ed at different embryonic s.ages. Among the total trans.ripts.from the five embryonic development s.ages. we found that 30.45 % are differentially expres.ed, 10.10 % s.ow s.age-s.ecificity and even a larger fraction, 62.88 %, exhibit cons.itutive expres.ion in all the s.ages. We als. analyzes.the expres.ion dynamics.of s.veral cons.rved s.gnaling pathways.（s.ch as.Hedgehog, JAK-s.AT, Notch, TGF-β, Ras.MAPK and Writ）, as.well as.key developmental genes. including thos. related to apoptos.s. axis.formation, Hox complex, neurogenes.s.and s.gmentation. The datas.ts.provide an es.ential res.urce for gene annotation and RPW functional genomics. including s.udies.by us.ng tools.and concepts.from multiple dis.iplines. s.ch as.development, phys.ology, biochemis.ry, molecular biology and genetics.
