Improved hybrid strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithms for multi-objective optimization

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to design an improved multi-objective algorithm with better spread and convergence than some current *** proposed application is for engineering design ***/methodology/approach–This study proposes two novel approaches which focus on faster convergence to the Pareto front(PF)while adopting the advantages of strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm-2(sPEA2)for better *** first method,decision variables corresponding to the optima of individual objective functions(Utopia Point)are strategically used to guide the search toward *** second method,boundary points of the PF are calculated and their decision variables are seeded to the initial ***–The proposed methods are tested with a wide range of constrained and unconstrained multi-objective test functions using standard performance *** evaluation demonstrates the superiority of proposed algorithms over well-known existing algorithms(such as NsGA-II and sPEA2)and recent ones such as NsLs and E-NsGA-II in most of the benchmark *** is also tested on an engineering design problem and compared with a currently used *** implications–The algorithms are intended to be used for practical engineering design problems which have many variables and conflicting objectives.A complex example of Welded Beam has been shown at the end of the *** implications–The algorithm would be useful for many design problems and social/industrial problems with conflicting ***/value–This paper presents two novel hybrid algorithms involving sPEA2 based on:local search;and Utopia point directed search *** concept has not been investigated before.

A Bayesian multi-model inference methodology for imprecise momentindependent global sensitivity analysis of rock structures

Traditional global sensitivity analysis(GsA)neglects the epistemic uncertainties associated with the probabilistic characteristics(*** of distribution type and its parameters)of input rock properties emanating due to the small size of datasets while mapping the relative importance of properties to the model *** paper proposes an augmented Bayesian multi-model inference(BMMI)coupled with GsA methodology(BMMI-GsA)to address this issue by estimating the imprecision in the momentindependent sensitivity indices of rock structures arising from the small size of input *** methodology employs BMMI to quantify the epistemic uncertainties associated with model type and parameters of input *** estimated uncertainties are propagated in estimating imprecision in moment-independent Borgonovo’s indices by employing a reweighting approach on candidate probabilistic *** proposed methodology is showcased for a rock slope prone to stress-controlled failure in the Himalayan region of *** proposed methodology was superior to the conventional GsA(neglects all epistemic uncertainties)and Bayesian coupled GsA(B-GsA)(neglects model uncertainty)due to its capability to incorporate the uncertainties in both model type and parameters of *** Borgonovo’s indices estimated via proposed methodology provide the confidence intervals of the sensitivity indices instead of their fixed-point estimates,which makes the user more informed in the data collection *** performed with the varying sample sizes suggested that the uncertainties in sensitivity indices reduce significantly with the increasing sample *** accurate importance ranking of properties was only possible via samples of large ***,the impact of the prior knowledge in terms of prior ranges and distributions was significant;hence,any related assumption should be made carefully.

Paraneoplastic retinopathies: an update on pathogenesis, diagnosis and management

The paraneoplastic retinopathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders with significant visual consequences occuring in the setting of a systemic *** conditions may be characterized by the presence of antiretinal antibodies and may predate or follow the diagnosis of an underlying *** I review the clinical findings,pathophysiology,laboratory testing and management of the paraneoplastic retinopathies:cancer-associated retinopathy(CAR),melanoma-associated retinopathy(MAR),bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation(BDUMP)and paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy(PVM).The pathophysiology of the paraneoplastic retinopathies varies from molecular mimicry resulting in anti-retinal antibody production(CAR,MAR)to relases of soluble factors either by the primary tumor(BDUMP)and/or immune system in response to the primary tumor(PVM)which result in retinal and/or retinal pigment epithelium *** each condition,structural and functional multimodal retinal testing can be helpful in establishing the *** for the paraneoplastic retinopathies involves a combination of treating the underlying malignancy plus additional local and/or systemic immunosuppressive agents though no systemic therapeutic protocols *** these interventions,the retinopathy may be progressive or the retinopathy may be a harbinger of poor ***,prompt diagnosis may help identify an underlying malignancy earlier and may thus improve cancer-related survival.

Reliability assessment of deep excavations in spatially random cohesion weakening friction strengthening massive rocks:Application to nuclear repositories

An augmented methodology is developed to estimate the reliability of deep excavations along spatially variable massive rock masses using the cohesion weakening friction strengthening(CWFs)*** parameters of the CWFs model were initially identified using sobol’s global sensitivity analysis based on their influence on the displacements and excavation damage zone around *** probability of failure was estimated by performing Mont–Carlo simulations on random finite difference models of excavations generated via MATLAB-FLAC2D coupling,considering the spatial variation of these sensitive *** variation was modeled by generating anisotropic random fields of sensitive CWFs parameters via the recently developed Fourier series method and updated correlations suggested by Walton(2019).The proposed methodology was demonstrated for a proposed deep nuclear waste repository to be located in *** from the developed methodology were systematically compared with those of traditional reliability(ignoring spatial variation)and deterministic methods(ignoring uncertainty).Although the developed methodology was computationally complex,it was judged to be the most realistic due to the realistic consideration of heterogeneous distributions of rock *** methodologies underestimate/overestimate the excavation performance due to negligence of uncertainty and spatial ***,a parametric analysis was performed using developed methodology by varying the initial friction angle,scale of fluctuations(sOFs)and dilation *** effect of initial friction angle was observed to be more pronounced on the probability of failures as compared to sOFs and dilation *** observations were made related to the excavation damage zone(EDZ)development quantified using yield area ratio.

Jackknife based generalized resampling reliability approach for rock slopes and tunnels stability analyses with limited data:Theory and applications

An efficient resampling reliability approach was developed to consider the effect of statistical uncertainties in input properties arising due to insufficient data when estimating the reliability of rock slopes and *** approach considers the effect of uncertainties in both distribution parameters(mean and standard deviation)and types of input ***,the approach was generalized to make it capable of analyzing complex problems with explicit/implicit performance functions(PFs),single/multiple PFs,and correlated/non-correlated input *** couples resampling statistical tool,***,with advanced reliability tools like Latin hypercube sampling(LHs),sobol’s global sensitivity,moving least square-response surface method(MLs-RsM),and Nataf’s *** developed approach was demonstrated for four cases encompassing different *** were compared with a recently developed bootstrap-based resampling reliability *** results show that the approach is accurate and significantly efficient compared with the bootstrap-based *** proposed approach reflects the effect of statistical uncertainties of input properties by estimating distributions/confidence intervals of reliability index/probability of failure(s)instead of their fixed-point ***,sufficiently accurate results were obtained by considering uncertainties in distribution parameters only and ignoring those in distribution types.

Effect of temperature on carrier transport and photoconductivity of Mn-doped Fes2 thin films

Thin-film of Mn-doped iron disulfide(Fes2) has been prepared using the thermal evaporation method. This work reports the Hall measurements, temperature and light intensity-dependent photoconductivity, electrical transport mechanism, and photodetection properties of Mn-doped Fes2thin film. The transient photoconductivity measurements of p-type Mn-doped Fes2thin film show a consistent dependence upon temperature and light *** transport mechanism was illustrated using different models. In region-Ⅰ(303–393 K) deposited film followed the thermally activated transport mechanism. Nearest neighbour hopping(NNH) transport mechanism was followed by region-Ⅱ(274–293 K), and Mott’s variable range hopping(VRH) mechanism was dominant in region Ⅲ(108–273 K). The fabricated device resulted in higher photoconductivity due to collecting charge carriers through electrodes under light illumination. The results also revealed that Mn-doped thin film possessed good photoresponsivity(～19 m A/W) as well as photo-detectivity(～3.4 × 1012Jones) due to the occupation of localized states formed by Mn-doping. Light intensity-dependent photodetection properties suggested the potential for real-time photodetection applications.

The height of total entropy(s)for a magnetic refrigerant material is essentially concerned with the magnetic and structural ***,the participation of such transitions in layered materials is not well ***,the purpose of this work is to investigate the interplay between double layer lattice with their single perovskite counterpart,to achieve optimal magnetocaloric performance.A series of self-doped Pr_(1.4+x)sr_(1.6-x)Mn_(2)O_(7)(0.0≤x≤0.5)Ruddlesden-Popper(R-P)perovskite have been prepared through the solid-state sintering *** increasing the Pr-stoichiometry,the lattice faults have increased and the double layer lattice dramatically disintegrates into single perovskite *** to the reduction of bilayer R-P phase into single perovskite the spin crossover occurs from weak bilayer(T=304 K)interactions towards the strong three-dimensional(T=308 K)interactions *** series consistently develops thermomagnetic irreversibility in zero-field cooled(ZFC)-field cooled(FC)magnetization,which is indicative of a spin-glass *** glassy nature has been ascribed collectively to the lattice strain produced because of dislocations and to an antiferromagnetic phase segregated at the *** maximum value of temperature average entropy change(TEC)and adiabatic temperature(ΔT)has enhanced nearly by 4 folds from 0.53 J kg^(-1)K^(-1),0.59 K(for x=0.0)up to 1.85 J kg^(-1)K^(-1),10 K(for x=0.5)at 2.5 T,***,the room temperature relative cooling power has improved from 26.94 J/kg up to 77.84 J/kg with an applied field of 2.5 *** findings in this work suggest that the controlled reduction of double layer lattice into single perovskite and/or existence of both phases simultaneously in bilayer R-P manganites may be very effective in obtaining the desirable characteristics of magnetocaloric effects.

The electrical properties of cubic perovskite series,CaCu_(3-x)Ti_(4-x)Fe_(2x)O_(12)with x=0.0,0.1,0.3,0.5,and 0.7,have been studied by employing current density as a function of electric field characteristics registered at different temperatures and thermal variations of direct current electrical resistivity *** of the compositions exhibit strong non-ohmic *** concentration dependence of breakdown field,the temperature at which switching action takes place,and maximum value of current density(J_(max))has been explained on account of structural,microstructural,and positron lifetime *** highest ever reported value of J_(max)=327 mA/cm^(2)has been observed for pristine *** values of the nonlinear coefficient advise the suitability of ceramics for low-voltage varistor *** Arrhenius plots show typical semiconducting *** activation energy values indicate that electric conduction proceeds through electrons with deformation in the system.
