Multidrug resistant Psudomonas aeruginosa infections complicating surgical wounds and the potential challenges in managing post-operative wound infections:University of Calabar Teaching Hospital experience

Objective:To ascertain the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) recovered from surgical site infections(ssIs).Methods:The study was retrospective in nature and was compiled for a period of five years(1st February,2004-31st January,2009).Data were generated from the culture of post-operative wound swab specimens by the microbiology laboratory of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital,Relevant information from the patients’ records was compiled,such as age,gender,type of surgical procedure,microorganisms recovered and their antibiotic sensitivity *** data was analysed by using Epi Info 6 statistical ***:Of the 4 533 wound swab specimens processed,673 were culture positive and P. aeruginosa was recovered from 13.1%of the culture positive specimens with its rate of recovery decreasing with age progression(P0.05).Most of the P. aeruginosa isolates were from general surgery wards and least from orthopaedic ***, ceftriaxone and augmentin were the most active antibiotics while ampicillin,tetracycline and cotrimoxazole were the least active antibiotics,with no antibiotic having a 100%activity against the ***:In view of the high resistance displayed by *** recovered from ssIs,adequate antiseptic procedures should be entrenched to avoid colonization of surgical wounds by this microorganism as well as others with similar sensitivity ***, ceftriaxone and augmentin may be considered for prevention of *** infection.

Development of necrotizing enterocolitis after blood transfusion in very premature neonates

Background Prior studies report conflicting evidence on the association between packed red blood cell(PRBC)transfu-sions and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC),especially in early weeks of life where transfusions are frequent and spontaneous intestinal perforation can mimic *** primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after day of life(DOL)14 in very premature *** A retrospective cohort analysis of very premature neonates was conducted to investigate association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after DOL *** endpoints were PRBC transfusions after DOL 14 until the date of NEC diagnosis,discharge,or *** ranked-sum and Fisher's exact tests,Cox proportional hazards regression,and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to analyze *** Of 549 premature neonates,186(34%)received transfusions after DOL 14 and nine(2%)developed NEC(median DOL=38;interquartile range=32-46).Of the nine with NEC after DOL 14,all were previously transfused(Psis of patients from DOL 10 onward included five additional patients who developed NEC between DOL 10 and DOL 14,and the hazard of NEC increased by a factor of nearly six after PRBC transfusion(hazard ratio=5.76,95%confidence interval=1.02-32.7;P=0.048).Conclusions Transfusions were strongly associated with NEC after DOL *** studies are needed to determine if restrictive transfusion practices can decrease incidence of NEC after DOL 14.

Objective:To ascertain the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli recovered from blood culture specimens in ***:The study was retrospective in nature and was carried out at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital(UCTH) *** generated from blood culture specimens over a five year period(Feb.2004-Feb.2009) was compiled, relevant information such as age,sex,organism recovered and antibiotic susceptibility patterns were obtained from patients *** were collected,transported,stored and processed using standard laboratory *** obtained was analysed using Epi Info 6 statistical ***:Escherichia coli was responsible for 15.3%(31/203) of the blood infections being the third most common microorganism *** community acquired(CA) isolates of the organism were significantly less resistant(Psocomial(NC) isolates against ***,amoxicillin,tetracycline,*** and *** sensitivity of both the NC and CA isolates of Escherichia coli to amikacin, augmentin,ofloxacin,ciprofloxacin,ceftazidime,cefuroxime,ceftriaxone and rifampicin was generally high(80-100%) with no significant difference(P>0.05).Majority(>95.0%) of the NC isolates of Escherichia coli were resistant to six of the antibiotics ***:Control mechanisms for hospital acquired infections should be stepped up so as lo limit the spread of the highly resistant bacterial *** the sale and consumption of antibiotics by the public need to be regulated.

Determinants of foreign direct investment in fast-growing economies: evidence from the BRICs and MINT countries

The flow of foreign direct investment(FDI)into a country can benefit both the investing entity and host *** study employed panel analysis to examine the factors that determine the direction of FDI to the fast-growing BRICs(Brazil,Russia,India,China,and south Africa)and MINT(Mexico,Indonesia,Nigeria,and Turkey)***,we used a pooled time-series cross sectional analysis of data from 2001 to 2011 to estimate and model the determinants of FDI for three samples:BRICs only,MINT only,and BRICs and MINT ***,a fixed effects approach was employed to provide the model for BRICs and MINT *** results demonstrate that market size,infrastructure availability,and trade openness play the most significant roles in attracting FDI to BRICs and MINT,while the roles of availability of natural resources and institutional quality are *** sustain and promote FDI inflow,the governments of BRICs and MINT must ensure that their countries remain attractive for investment by offering a level playing field for investors and political *** and MINT governments also need to invest more in their human capital to ensure that their economies can absorb substantial skills and technology spillovers from FDI and promote sustainable long-term economic *** study is significant because it contributes to the literature on determinants of FDI by extending the scope of previous studies that often focused on BRICs only.

Objective:To ascertain the socio-cultural factors influencing the rate of utilization of insecticide treated bed nets(ITNs) in a malaria endemic city of Makurdi,north central Nigeria. Methods:The study was cross-sectional in nature using systematic sampling method to identify *** quantitative and qualitative data was generated from adult women using structured and semi structured questionnaires,and focused group discussions(FGDs) to obtain information on rate and patterns of utilization of *** such as age,educational level, marital status,awareness or otherwise of the existence of malaria,and factors influencing rate of ownership and utilization of ITNs were *** were used to obtain qualitative information on rate of utilization of ITNs not captured in the *** obtained was analysed using Epi Info 6 statistical ***:Among the respondents interviewed,97.0% (2 013/2 075) were aware of existence of malaria and 87.0% of these(1 751/2 013) would associate it with *** rate of ownership of any bed net,ITNs and untreated bed nets(UTNs) was 25.1% ,17.0% and 8.3% ,*** of ITNs among children was 30.0% (112/373) and UTNs 12.9% (48/373).Positive contributors to ITNs utilization were literacy,enhanced economy, experience of marriage,and being gainfully employed(Ps were ignorance,poverty and some cultural beliefs and ***:A more synchronized advocacy should be carried out on the potential benefits of ITNs utilization and *** ITNs should be made available to the people of the community at minimal or no cost.

Non-caseating submental tuberculous lymphadenopathy: A case report

Chronic peripheral lymphadenopathy in adults is an indication of pathology of which tuberculosis is the commonest in the developing countries. Presented is a 36-year-old with a huge chronic submental lymphadenopathy in a seronegative patient of 7 years duration. Histology revealed non-caseating tuberculosis. Tuberculosis should be considered in submental lymphadenopathy. Despite the long duration, the absence of cold abscess, and or sinus formation may be an indication of the non-caseating tuberculous lymphadenopathy.

Comparison of antioxidant activity of insulin, Ocimum gratissimum L., and Vernonia amygdalina L. in type 1 diabetic rat model

OBJECTIVE： Diabetes mellitus （DM） is known to be associated with increase of oxidative stress products. The direction of effect of any treatment on these products could therefore be a reliable measure of its efficacy on DM. so the aim of this study was to investigate the activity of insulin, Ocimum gratissimum L. （OG） and Vernonia amygdafina L. （VA） on oxidative stress ***： Thirty-six female Wistar rats weighing 150-200 g were randomly divided into six groups of six rats each. Thirty rats were induced for type 1 DM （DM1） with a single intraperitoneal administration of 65 mg/ kg body weight of streptozotocin. Group 1 was normal control and was administered distilled water while Group 2 served as DM1 control group; Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6 were diabetic rats treated with 208 mg/kg OG （DM1 ＋ OG）, 52 mg/kg VA （DM1 ＋ VA）, 208 mg/kg OG ＋ 52 mg/kg VA （DMI＋OG ＋VA） and 0.16 IU insulin （DM1 ＋ insulin） respectively. Determination of methemoglobin and sulfhemoglobin was achieved by the absorption spectrum principle. Red blood cell （RBC） catalase was assayed by continuous spectrophotometric ***： The RBC catalase concentration was significantly decreased in the DM1 and DMI＋VA groups when compared with the normal control. DM1 ＋ OG significantly increased RBC-catalase when compared to DMI. The methemoglobin concentration was significantly reduced in the DM1, DM1 ＋ VA, DM1 ＋ OG ＋ VA and DM1 ＋ insulin groups when compared to the normal control group. The sulfhemoglobin concentration was significantly increased in the diabetic control and the diabetic treated groups when compared to the normal control. DM1 ＋ OG reduced the sulfhemoglobin concentration when compared to DM1. The blood glucose concentration of all the diabetic groups was significantly raised compared to normal control. Relativistic symmetries of Deng Fan and Eckart potentials with Coulomb-like and Yukawa-like tensor interactions

Relativistic symmetries of the Dirac equation under spin and pseudo-spin symmetries are investigated and a combina- tion of Deng-Fan and Eckart potentials with Coulomb-like and Yukawa-like tensor interaction terms are considered. The energy equation is obtained by using the Nikiforov-Uvarov method and the corresponding wave functions are expressed in terms of the hypergeometric functions. The effects of the Coulomb and Yukawa tensor interactions are numerically discussed as well.

A review of earthquake occurrences and observations in Nigeria

Although Nigeria is not located within the major seismic zones of the world; over the years,several minor earthquakes have been experienced in some parts of the *** first widely reported occurrence of an Earth tremor in Nigeria was in *** events were reported in 1939,1964,1984,1990,1994,1997,2000 and *** intensities of these events ranged from III to VI based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity *** these events,only the 1984,1990,1994 and 2000 events were instrumentally *** had body wave magnitudes ranging from 4.3 to 4.5,local magnitudes between 3.7 and 4.2,and surface wave magnitudes of 3.7 to *** these events occurred,there were no functional seismological observatories in ***,that has now changed with the establishment of a seismographic network managed by the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics（CGG）,Toro,***,the network has four operational stations equipped with 24-bit 4-channel recorders and broadband 30-second *** are being made to establish more stations and migrate to real-time collection of seismic data using the general packet radio service（GPRs） technology as well as automatic location of *** sensing,geological and geophysical studies have revealed the presence of a NNE-ssW trending Ifewara-Zungeru fault zone which has been shown to be linked with the Atlantic fracture *** dynamics of the Atlantic fracture zones have been suggested to be responsible for the seismic activities experienced in the areas.

Pseudospin symmetry of the Dirac equation for a Mobius square plus Mie type potential with a Coulomb-like tensor interaction via sUsYQM

We investigate the approximate solution of the Dirac equation for a combination of Mobius square and Mie type potentials under the pseudospin symmetry limit by using supersymmetry quantum mechanics. We obtain the bound-state energy equation and the corresponding spinor wave functions in an approximate analytical manner. We comment on the system via various useful figures and tables.
