Source identification, contamination status and health risk assessment of heavy metals from road dusts in Dhaka, Bangladesh

In this study, concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were determined in road dusts collected from different locations in Dhaka to assess source, contamination status and health risk. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to determine Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb and their mean concentrations were 162.27 ± 29.46, 721.18 ± 180.14, 35.65 ± 12.55, 104.56 ± 128.33, 515.32 ± 321.90,BDL, and 342.82 ± 591.20 mg/kg, respectively. Among the heavy metals, highest concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb were found at urban sites-7(municipal waste dumping) and 8(medical waste incineration). Highest concentration of Cr followed by Cu and Zn was found at site-5(Tejgaon, urban). Principal component analysis revealed that anthropogenic activities are the potential sources for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb while earth crust for Mn. Pollution index and pollution load index results suggested that all the sites were contaminated and/or degraded by Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb except sites-9(urban), 10(sub-urban), 11(rural) while sites-7 and 8(urban) were extremely degraded. For noncarcinogenic health risk, hazard quotient values for dermal were higher compared to that of inhalation/ingestion. Though hazard index values were less than 1 at all the sites, these were at least one order of magnitude higher for children group than that of adult group, thus the children group may face more noncarcinogenic health risk at sites -7 and 8. Values of incremental lifetime cancer risk were from 10to 10showed no carcinogenic health risk by road dusts contaminated with the heavy metals.

布里甘加河(Buriganga)位于孟加拉首都的达卡市(Dhaka),这里居住了约1800万人口,被认为是孟加拉污染最严重的河流之一。地下水是当地居民饮用水的主要来源,但是其水平面逐渐下降,从而导致居民开始饮用表层水。这篇研究的目的是为了利用ICP-MS测定布里甘加河水、沉积物和鱼类中多种元素的含量,为未来环境监测提供相应的信息。本实验分别于雨季(2015年8月5日)和冬季(2016年2月7日),在布里甘加河的7个采样地点采集水样、沉积物和鱼类,并利用ICP-MS测定样品中金属含量(如Cr、Mn、Ni、Cu、As、Cd、Hg和Pb)。此外,考虑金属对水生生物和人类有着相似的影响,因此研究其季节和空间分布的变化。冬季,水体中Cr和As的浓度低于检出限(BDL),而在站位1检测到Ni的浓度为1.868 mg/L。除Cr和As以外,大部分元素浓度均为冬季高于雨季,且其浓度在不同季节有不同的变化趋势。雨季,Cr、Mn、Ni、Cu、As、Cd、Hg、Pb 浓度分别为 0.757、0.059、0.005、0.011、0.003、0.004、BDL、0.038 mg/L;冬季,其浓度分别为 BDL、1.528、BDL、0.162、BDL、1.062、0.102、1.213 mg/L。雨季,金属元素的空间分布变化较小,而冬季变化较大,其主要原因是雨季有大量水体输入。工业废水自上游排放,并与洪水混合,而这种水体仅限于排污口附近。由于河岸附近有大量制革厂存在,Cr是布里甘加河污染最为严重的元素之一(特别是站位1和站位2之间)。但是冬季Cr浓度低于检出限,而雨季成为浓度最高的元素。Pb是第二大污染元素,其平均值为1.213 mg/L,最高值出现在站位1(2.052 mg/L)。冬季Hg的平均浓度为0.102mg/L,最高浓度出现在站位2(0.128mg/L),其次为站位3(0.120mg/L)。相似的变化趋势也在沉积物和鱼类中发现,即金属元素冬季浓度高于雨季,但是其浓度变化小于水体中金属浓度。根据研究,由于洪水和雨水的稀释作用,导致雨季水体中金属浓度普遍降低。稀释或冲刷作用对于沉积物影响较小,因此沉积物中金属浓度变化较小。雨季,Cr、Mn、Ni、Cu、Zn、As、Cd、Hg、Pb 在沉积物中的浓度分别为 42.229、37.579、6.394、14.072,0.181、0.206、0.016、10.407 mg/kg 冬季,其浓度分别为 44.083、39.063、7.138、15.926、0.198、0.227、0.018、11.405 mg/kg。由于制革厂的影响,沉积物中Cr浓度最高,其平均值为44.083 mg/kg,最高浓度出现在站位1(雨季:76.441 mg/kg;冬季:70.808 mg/kg)。根据本研究中污染度、污染因子、潜在生态危害指数及生态危害因子评估,沉积物中金属污染属于低污染水平。根据对鱼类中金属浓度研究发现,除As在所有鱼类中均低于检出限,其余元素冬季高于雨季。有趣的是,Cr在冬季水体中的浓度低于检出限,但是可以在三种鱼类中检测(***:2.284 mg/kg(站位 1),***:0.352 mg/kg(站位 1)和 ***:0.196 mg/kg(站位 2)),其中站位***中无法检测出Cr浓度。在*** is、***和V.t studineus出现Cr,可能与其为肉食动物相关,特别是作为底栖生物***和*** 所有元素中Mn浓度最高,在***中其浓度为0.915 mg/kg,在***中浓度为 47.410 mg/kg。As的健康危害指数(HRI)比对应的RfD至高92-170倍。此结果说明了被污染的鱼类是人类健康的潜在危害。冬季,Cd的HRI比RfD高148-294倍,此结果说明了人类通过食用污染的鱼类会遭受潜在健康危害。但是,根据目标危害商(THQ)的研究结果,在雨季,由于目标危害系数(THQ)与危害指数(HI)均小于1,说明了这些元素无潜在的致癌风险。冬季,所有元素THQ均小于1,而***的HI值为2.72。根据目标致癌风险(TR)指数可知,雨季,某些鱼类中的Cr和Ni含量对人类的致癌风险较低,而所有鱼类中As、Cd和Pb含量对人类无致癌风险;冬季,鱼类中Cd和Ni含量对人体有轻度致癌风险,除***中的Ni。同时,鱼类中Pb和Cr浓度对人体有低致癌风险,除***中的Cr对人体为轻度致癌风险。

Kinetics of Degradation of Eosin Y by One of the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs)—Fenton’s Process

Kinetics of homogeneous degradation of Eosin Y (EY), also known as Acid red 87 (CI 45380), are studied, mostly using Fenton’s process, at 30℃ by monitoring its absorbance at 517 nm (λmax of EY). This process is one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Mixture of H2O2 and Fe(II) ion in acetate buffer medium (pH 2.74 - 4.56) generates hydroxyl free radicals (?OH) which attack the dye molecules, resulting in degradation of the dye molecules. Results show that the initial rate of EY degradation decreases with the increasing of solution pH because of removal of kinetically important Fe (iron) species through formation of ferric hydroxide. On the other hand, the rate increases with increasing the concentrations of H2O2, Fe(II) and EY at low solution pH. The initial rate increases with increasing of concentration of H2O2 and, subsequently remains unaffected with further increase of its concentration at a constant Fe(II) concentration because of the enhanced scavenging environment created by H2O2 at its higher concentration. The initial rate also increases with increasing of concentration of Fe(II) at a constant H2O2 concentration and remains unaffected with its further increase. EY concentration also enhances the initial rate at low pH. However, the initial rate is significantly enhanced by UV light. This is because of formation of additional hydroxyl radicals through excitation of the dye molecules by UV light. During the period of experiment, EY in aqueous solution alone hardly suffered any degradation. Degradation mechanism of EY by the Fenton and photo-Fenton’s processes is also discussed. Statistical analysis was used to validate the experimental results. Low values of the standard deviation for both the initial rate and % degradation indicated the consistency of the experimental data.

Frame Length Dependency for Fundamental Frequency Extraction in Noisy Speech

The fundamental frequency plays a significant part in understanding and perceiving the pitch of a sound. The pitch is a fundamental attribute employed in numerous speech-related works. For fundamental frequency extraction, several algorithms have been developed which one to use relies on the signal’s characteristics and the surrounding noise. Thus, the algorithm’s noise resistance becomes more critical than ever for precise fundamental frequency estimation. Nonetheless, numerous state-of-the-art algorithms face struggles in achieving satisfying outcomes when confronted with speech recordings that are noisy with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. Also, most of the recent techniques utilize different frame lengths for pitch extraction. From this point of view, This research considers different frame lengths on male and female speech signals for fundamental frequency extraction. Also, analyze the frame length dependency on the speech signal analytically to understand which frame length is more suitable and effective for male and female speech signals specifically. For the validation of our idea, we have utilized the conventional autocorrelation function (ACF), and state-of-the-art method BaNa. This study puts out a potent idea that will work better for speech processing applications in noisy speech. From experimental results, the proposed idea represents which frame length is more appropriate for male and female speech signals in noisy environments.

Assessment of Physico-Chemical and Microbial Quality of Sugarcane Juice Sold by Street Vendors in Three Regions of Bangladesh

Sugar cane juice is a popular refreshing drink in most part of Bangladesh. It has great taste and health benefits;also it is available most of the public places at reasonable prices which consumed by road side customers including general public, shopping personals, tourists, students. In our country, street vendors crushing sugarcane between roller crusher and sold without any heat treatment or preservative, also served with or without added ice and lemon juice. The study aimed to identify and compare the physico-chemical and microbial quality of sugarcane juice. The chemical qualities of juices including moisture, PH, ash, total soluble solid, total sugar, reducing sugar and titrable acidity were found slightly different in Mymensingh, Gazipur and Narayangonj areas. The highest and lowest value of moisture, ash, PH, total soluble solids, total sugar, reducing sugar and titrable acidity were found in 84.33% - 79.26% (Gazipur-Mymensingh), 0.57% - 0.04% (Mymensingh-Gazipur), 5.9 - 2.9 (Gazipur-Narayangonj), 17.48% - 4.98% (Mymensingh-Narayangonj), 21.9% - 6.56% (Mymensingh-Gazipur), 3.7 - 2.1 (Gazipur-Mymensingh) and 0.523% - 0.007% (Narayangonj-Gazipur) respectively. For microbiological analysis, the total viable count of sugar cane juice in Mymensingh, Gazipur and Narayangonj were ranged from 0.6 × 105 - 43.6 × 105 cfu/ml, 4.6 × 105 - 21.6 × 105 cfu/ml and 3.6 × 105 - 36.6 × 105 cfu/ml respectively, where the permitted value is 1.0 × 104 cfu/ml, whereas the total coliform count was ranged from 0.4 × 105 - 6.4 × 105 cfu/ml, 0.6 × 105 - 8.4 × 105 cfu/ml and 0.00 - 8.4 × 105 cfu/ml, where the permitted value is 100 cfu/ml and total fungal count was ranged from 5.5 × 105 - 56.5 × 105 cfu/ml, 21.5 × 105 - 54.5 × 105 cfu/ml and 32.5 × 105 - 68.5 × 105 cfu/

Adherence in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Depression and the Role of Physician-Patient Relationship: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) challenges health and quality of life of patients, families, and communities. Patients with comorbid depression are more likely to develop macrovascular and microvascular complications. The aim was to assess glycemic control and adherence in diabetic patients with comorbid depression. Further, the study evaluated the relationship between adherence and the physician-patient relationship. Methods: The study was conducted at Al-Agouza Family Medicine Center (AFMC) between February 2018 and March 2020. The included patients were between 35 - 80 years of age;had type 2 diabetes with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5%, fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dl, and scored between 11 - 30 on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Logistic regression, chi-square, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the relationship between depression, adherence, physician-patient relationship, and other variables. Results: The study included 100 eligible patients with a median BDI score of 20 (10 - 30). The median diabetic panel for patients was FBS 188 (126 - 348) mg/dl, PPS 282.50 (162 - 448) mg/dl, and HbA1c 9.5 (6.6 - 14.0)%. Depression and regular follow-up visits were statistically associated with improvement of diabetes symptoms (p = 0.019). There was a significant relationship (p 0.001) between adherence, regular follow-up visits, and knowledge of DM. Further, there was a significant relationship between the physician-patient relationship and DM improvement (p = 0.047). Conclusion: Physician-patient relationship was paramount to improving adherence and positive diabetes care. Our findings suggest a shift to a physician-patient relationship model with mutual agreement on medical decisions is highly recommended.

Warped product manifolds are known to have applications in physics. For instance, they provide an excellent setting to model space-time near a black hole or a massive star （cf. [9]）. The studies on warped product manifolds with extrinsic geometric point of view were intensified after the B.Y. Chen＇s work on CR-warped product submanifolds of Kaehler manifolds （cf. [6], [7]）. Later on, similar studies were carried out in the setting of 1.c.K. manifolds and nearly Kaehler manifolds （el. [3], [11]）. In the present article, we investigate a larger class of warped product submanifolds of 1.c.K. manifolds, ensure their existence by constructing an example of such manifolds and obtain some important properties of these submanifolds. With regard to the CR-warped product submanifold, a special case of generic warped product submanifolds, we obtain a characterization under which a CR-submanifold is reducesd to a CR-warped product submanifold.

Computational Determination of the Binding Mode of α-Conotoxin to Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

Conotoxins belong to the large families of disulfide-rich peptide toxins from cone snail venom, and can act on a broad spectrum of ion channels and receptors. They are classified into different subtypes based on their targets. The α-conotoxins selectively inhibit the current of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Because of their unique selectivity towards distinct n ACh R subtypes, α-conotoxins become valuable tools in n ACh R study. In addition to the X-ray structures of α-conotoxins in complex with acetylcholine-binding protein, a homolog of the n ACh R ligand-binding domain, the high-resolution crystal structures of the extracellular domain of the α1 and α9 subunits are also obtained. Such structures not only revealed the details of the configuration of n ACh R, but also provided higher sequence identity templates for modeling the binding modes of α-conotoxins to n ACh R. This mini-review summarizes recent modeling studies for the determination of the binding modes of α-conotoxins to n ACh R. As there are not crystal structures of the n ACh R in complex with conotoxins, computational modeling in combination of mutagenesis data is expected to reveal the molecular recognition mechanisms that govern the interactions between α-conotoxins and n ACh R at molecular level. An accurate determination of the binding modes of α-conotoxins on ACh Rs allows rational design of α-conotoxin analogues with improved potency or selectivity to n ACh Rs.
