Unresectable esophageal cancer treated with multiple chemotherapies in combination with chemoradiotherapy:A case report

BACKGROUND Definitive chemoradiotherapy(dCRT)using cisplatin plus 5fluorouracil(CF)with radiation is considered the standard treatment for unresectable locally advanced T4 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).Recently,induction chemotherapy has received attention as an effective treatment *** SUMMARY We report a successful case of a 59-year-old female with unresectable locally advanced T4 ESCC treated by two additional courses of chemotherapy with CF after induction chemotherapy with docetaxel,cisplatin and fluorouracil(DCF)followed by *** esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD)detected a type 2 advanced lesion located on the middle part of the esophagus,with *** tomography detected the primary tumor with suspected invasion of the left bronchus and 90°of direct contact with the aorta,and upper mediastinal lymph node *** findings from biopsy revealed squamous cell *** initially performed induction chemotherapy using three courses of DCF,but the lesion was still evaluated unresectable after DCF ***,we subsequently performed dCRT treatment(CF and radiation).After dCRT,prominent reduction of the primary tumor was recognized but a residual tumor with ulceration was detected by *** the patient had some surgical risk,we performed two additional courses of CF and achieved a clinically complete *** 14 mo from last administration of CF chemotherapy,recurrence has not been detected by computed tomography and EGD,and biopsy from the scar formation has revealed no cancer *** We report successful case with tumor remnants even after DCF and subsequent dCRT,for whom a complete response was finally achieved with two additional courses of CF *** CF chemotherapy could be one radical treatment option for residual ESCC after treatment with induction DCF followed by dCRT to avoid salvage surgery,especially for high-risk patients.

The fall armyworm(FAW),Spodoptera frugiperda(***),spread rapidly in Africa and Asia recently,causing huge economic losses in crop *** armyworm caterpillars were first detected in South Korea and Japan in June ***,the migration timing and path for FAW into the countries were estimated by a trajectory simulation approach implementing the insect's flight *** result showed that FAWs found in both South Korea and Japan were estimated to have come from eastern China by crossing the Yellow Sea or the East China Sea in 10–36 h in three series of *** the first series,FAW moths that arrived on Jeju Island during 22–24 May were estimated to be from Zhejiang,Anhui and Fujian Provinces after 1–2 nights’*** the second series,it was estimated that FAW moths landed in southern Korea and Kyushu region of Japan simultaneously or successively during 5–9 June,and these moths mostly came from Guangdong and Fujian *** FAW moths in the third series were estimated to have immigrated from Taiwan Province onto Okinawa Islands during 19–24 *** these migrations,southwesterly low-level jets extending from eastern China to southern Korea and/or Japan were observed in the northwestern periphery of the western Pacific Subtropical *** results,for the first time,suggested that the overseas FAW immigrants invading Korea and Japan came from eastern and southern *** study is helpful for future monitoring,early warning and the source control of this pest in the two countries.

Activities of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors modulate neurotransmission and synaptic architecture

The cholinergic system is involved in a broad spectrum of brain function, and its failure has been implicated in Alzheimer＇s disease. Acetylcholine transduces signals through muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, both of which influence synaptic plasticity and cognition. However, the mechanisms that relate the rapid gating of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to persistent changes in brain function have remained elusive. Recent evidence indicates that nicotinic acetylcholine receptors activities affect synaptic morphology and density, which result in persistent rearrangements of neural connectivity. Further investigations of the relationships between nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and rearrangements of neural circuitry in the central nervous system may help understand the pathogenesis of Alzheimer＇s disease.

Luminescence of Er^(3+) in Oxyfluoride Transparent Glass-Ceramics

Erbium doped silicate, germanate, and tellurium-germanate oxyfluoride glasses were prepared in a bulk form. Through appropriate heat treatment of the as-prepared glasses, transparent glass-ceramics （TGCs） were obtained with the formation of β-PbF2：Er^3＋ nanocrystals in the glass matrix were confirmed by X-ray ***-defined diffraction peaks were observed in the samples after heat-treatment. The average crystal diameter of these precipitated crystals from full-width at half-maximum （FWHM） of the diffraction peak was estimated to be between 8 and 13 nm. Optical absorption, photoluminescence, and upconversion luminescence were measured on as-prepared glass and glass-ceramics. Luminescence spectra in the TGC samples revealed well-resolved, sharp stark-splitting peaks, which indicates that a majority of Er^3＋ ions has been incorporated into the crystalline phase of the nanocrystals. The intensity of the visible and near infrared luminescence mostly increases in TSG compared to that in the as-prepared glass. In 1.53 μm absorption and emission bands, the maximum absorption peak is blue-shifted from 1531 to 1507 nm, whereas the maximum emission peak is redshifted from 1535 to 1543 nm in TGC, as compared with that in glass. The bandwidth at half-maximum （BWHM） of the emission band is significantly broader in TGC than in glass, which is beneficial to the erbium-doped fiber amplifier （EDFA）. Upconversion luminescence was measured using 800 nm near-infrared light excitation. Drastically increased upconversion 1 was observed from the TGC as compared to that from their corresponding as-prepared glasses. In addition to a strong green emission centered at 545 nm because of ^4S3/2→^4I15/2 transition and a weaker red emission centered at 662 nm because of ^4F9/2→^4I15/2 transition, generally seen from the Er^3＋ doped glasses, two violet emissions centered at 410 nm because of ^2H9/2→^4I15/2 transition and centered at 379 nm because of ^4G11/2→^4I15/2 transition were also o

Analysis and control of vibration of ropes in a high-rise elevator under earthquake excitation

In this research, the vibration of elevator ropes, including the main rope and compensation rope are investigated simultaneously in a high-rise elevator system under earthquake excitation. Moreover, the paper presents a new control method to restrain the sway of both ropes. This study considers varying rope lengths during elevator operation which cause other system parameters such as natural frequency, and damping ratio to be time-variant variables. The dynamics of the ropes are analyzed by solving the governing non-stationary, nonlinear equation numerically. In order to mitigate the vibration of ropes in several motion conditions, particularly upwards movement, downward movement, stopped at the lowest position, and stopped at the highest position, an active equipment is installed at the compensation sheave. The stability of the system using the controller is analyzed at four states: without disturbance and static car, without disturbance and mobile car, including disturbance and static car, and including disturbance and mobile car. The efficiency of the controller used for dampening the vibration of elevator ropes is validated by numerical simulation results.

Fault Detection System Design for Actuator of a Thermal Process Using Operator Based Approach

This paper proposes an operator based fault detection method for an actuator fault of an aluminum plate thermal process with input constraints. Operator-based robust right coprime factorization(RCF)approach is utilized in this method. After developing a mathematical model of the thermal process,a robust tracking operator system is designed for the process with input constraints. Following this, design of the fault detection system is given by using operator-based robust RCF approach. Finally, experiment is conducted to support the proposed design method

The functional properties of endogenous Schwann cells(SCs)during nerve repair are *** the functional properties of SCs at different stages of nerve repair may have therapeutic benefit in improving the repair of damaged *** studies showed that miR-221-3p promotes the proliferation and migration of SCs,and miR-338-3p promotes the myelination of *** this study,we established rat models of sciatic nerve injury by bridging the transected sciatic nerve with a silicone *** injected a miR-221 lentiviral vector system together with a doxycycline-inducible Tet-On miR-338 lentiviral vector system into the cavity of nerve conduits of nerve stumps to sequentially regulate the biological function of endogenous SCs at different stages of nerve *** found that the biological function of SCs was sequentially regulated,the diameter and density of myelinated axons were increased,the expression levels of NF200 and myelin basic protein were increased,and the function of injured peripheral nerve was improved using this *** Target Prediction Database prediction,Nanopore whole transcriptome sequencing,quantitative PCR,and dual luciferase reporter gene assay results predicted and verified Cdkn1b and Nrp1 as target genes of miR-221-3p and miR-338-3p,respectively,and their regulatory effects on SCs were confirmed in *** conclusion,here we established a new method to enhance nerve regeneration through sequential regulation of biological functions of endogenous SCs,which establishes a new concept and model for the treatment of peripheral nerve *** findings from this study will provide direct guiding significance for clinical treatment of sciatic nerve injury.

Lyapunov function-based obstacle avoidance scheme for a two-wheeled mobile robot

An obstacle avoidance scheme of a two-wheeled mobile robot is shown by selecting an appropriate Lya- punov function. When considering the obstacle, the Lyapunov function may have some local minima. A method which erases the local minima is proposed by using a function which covers the minima with a plane surface. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulations.
