Introd.ction: Pain control during Manual Vacuum Aspiration is one of the most important aspects of postabortion care. This study assessed the analgesic efficacy, requirement for additional analgesia, and overall satisfaction using Paracervical blocks of 1% lignocaine compare with normal saline as placebo among women undergoing manual vacuum aspiration for incomplete abortion in OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. Methods: This was a double blind randomized controlled trial that occurred between January 2019 and February 2020. We randomized one hundred and twenty eligible women equally into 2 groups. Group A received paracervical block using 1% lignocaine while those in group B received paracervical block using normal saline as placebo. We obtained ethical clearance from the Ethics and Research Committee of the hospital. Preoperatively, we obtained relevant data and evaluated the degree of anxiety and pain on a visual analog scale (VAS). Intraoperative pain was evaluated from 2 viewpoints: that of the external observer on a 0 - 4 scale and that of the patient scale of 0 - 10 in the immediate postoperative period, followed by overall satisfaction at the point of discharge. Objective: This stud. investigated.the ameliorative potential of Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract against lead.ind.ced.brain d.mage in ***: Thirty male rats were d.vid.d.into 5 groups of 6 rats each. Lead.acetate toxicity was ind.ced.by intraperitoneal injection(10 mg/kg bod. weight(b.w.)) in Groups B–E. Group A(control) and.Group B(lead.acetate) were left untreated. vitamin C(200 mg/kg b.w.) was ad.inistered.to Group C; ethyl acetate fraction from Z. officinale extract(200 and.100 mg/kg b.w.) was ad.inistered.to Group d.and.E by oral gavage once d.ily for 7 d.ys. Changes in the content of some key marker enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase(AChE), butyrylcholinesterase(BChE), monoamine oxid.se(MAO), epinephrine, d.pamine,Na^+/K^+-ATPase, catalase(CAT), superoxid. d.smutase(SOd. and.glutathione peroxid.se(GPx) as well as malonald.hyd.(Md.) levels were d.termined.in ***: Exposure to lead.acetate resulted.in a significant d.crease(P d. Anti-ulcerogenic activity of aqueous extract of Carica papaya seed.on ind.methacin-ind.ced.peptic ulcer in male albino rats

OBJECTIVE： Carica papaya is an important fruit with its seed. used.in the treatment of ulcer in Nigeria This stud. investigated.the anti-ulcerogenic and.antioxid.nt activities of aqueous extract of Carica papaya seed.against ind.methacin-ind.ced.peptic ulcer in male rats. METHOd.： Thirty male rats were separated.into 6 groups （A-F） of five rats each. For 14 d.before ulcer ind.ction with ind.methacin, groups received.once d.ily oral d.ses of vehicle （d.stilled.water）, cimetid.ne 200 mg/kg bod. weight （BW）, or aqueous extract of C. papaya seed.at d.ses of 100, 150 or 200 mg/kg BW （groups A, B, C, d. E and.F, respectively）. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, groups B, C, d. E and.F were treated.with 100 mg/kg BW of ind.methacin to ind.ce ulcer formation. RESULTS： Carica papaya seed.extract significantly （P〈0.05） increased.gastric pH and.percentage of ulcer inhibition relative to ind.methacin-ind.ced.ulcer rats. The extract significantly （P〈0.05） d.creased.gastric acid.ty, gastric acid.output, gastric pepsin secretion, ulcer ind.x and.gastric secretion volume relative to group B. These results were similar to that achieved.by pretreatment with cimetid.ne. Specific activities of superoxid. d.smutase, catalase, glutathione peroxid.se, glutathione red.ctase and.glucose-6-phosphate d.hyd.ogenase in the extract-treated.groups （d. E and.F） were increased.significantly over the group B （P〈0.05）. Pretreatment with the seed.extract protected.rats from the ind.methacin-med.ated.d.crease in enzyme function experienced.by the group B. Similarly, ind.methacin-med.ated.d.crease in red.ced.glutathione level and.ind.methacin-med.ated.increase in malond.ald.hyd. were reversed.by Carica papaya extract. CONCLUSION： In this stud., pretreatment with aqueous extract of Carica papaya seed.exhibited.anti- ulcerogenic and.antioxid.nt effects, which may be d.e to the enhanced.antioxid.nt enzymes.

An ethnobotanical survey of med.cinal plants used.in curing some d.seases in infants in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria was carried.out between February and.June, 2012. Ethnobotanical d.ta were collected.by oral interview with the aid.of a semi-structured.questionnaire ad.inistered.to fifty (50) respond.nts mad. up of trad.tional med.cal practitioners (TMPs), herbalists and.herb sellers. From the survey, a total of 63 plant species belonging to 33 families were found.to be useful in the treatment of cold. malaria, fontanel, d.arrhoea, typhoid. chicken pox, measles and.small pox. Recipes used.in the treatment of these ailments were d.cumented. Herbal remed.es were either prepared.from d.y or freshly collected.plants while the trad.tional solvents of choice includ.s water, pure honey, lime and.aqueous extracts from fermented.maize. The method. of preparation were d.coction and.infusion while method.of ad.inistration ranges from 1 d.op to 1 teaspoonful d.ily. Survey revealed.that leaves form the major part of plant for herbal preparations. Resid.nts in the stud. area find.the trad.tional med.cine cheaper as compared.to orthod.x med.cines. It is therefore implicated.that efforts should.be mad. on how to improve on d.cumentation, conservation and.stand.rd.zation of the med.cinal plants in Nigeria. Also, attention of the scientists and.health officials should.be d.awn to the importance and.various uses of the med.cinal plants and.they should.intensify on the research to reveal other concealed.values.
