Distribution of Selected Toxic Elements in Water Phases of River Ogbere, Ibadan, Nigeria

Rivers in Nigeria are faced with increasing contamination of both solid and liquid wastes that enter the surrounding water bodies, and some of these are toxic pollutants that settle onto the riverbed (the ultimate sink of contaminants in the aquatic environment). These toxic pollutants are released into the aquatic environments and inadvertently pose serious public health risks and hazards. This study aims to assess the level of potentially toxic element in River Ogbere water in the city of Ibadan. A total of 12 surface water samples collected from River Ogbere in Ibadan during the dry and wet season of 2019 was analysed for pH, EC, Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb) and Nickel (Ni). The pH was found in the alkaline range (7.40 - 7.83) while the conductance was obtained in the range of 236.67 - 353.3 μs/cm in both seasons. Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Ni were detected in all the samples in the range 0.10 - 5.44 mg/L, 3.20 - 5.03 mg/L, 0.12 - 1.27 mg/L, 0.03 - 0.51 mg/L, 0.03 - 0.68 mg/L, 0.01 - 0.75 mg/L and 0.01 - 0.03 mg/L in both seasons respectively, whereas Cd was detected only in 75% of the samples (0.00 - 0.07 mg/L). Overall seasonal variation was significant for Fe, Mn, Pb, Cd, and Cr. The maximum mean concentration of Fe (5.44 mg/L), Mn (5.03 mg/L), Zn (1.27 mg/L), Cu (0.68 mg/L), Pb (0.75 mg/L) and Ni (0.03 mg/L) were all observed during the dry season. The heavy metals also varied with the change of sampling locations. The dominance of these toxic element in the surface water of River Ogbere followed the sequence: Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Ni > Cd. The anthropogenic activities around the study area were observed to have increased the influx of toxic metals at both upstream and downstream sections of the river. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment-Based Water Safety Plan for Packaged Water Production Companies in Abeokuta, South West Nigeria

Provision of quality drinking water is paramount for sustaining good public health in urban residents. Packaged water produced and consumed across cities in Nigeria lacks integrity in protecting Health. Water safety plan based on hazard identification and risk assessment in each component of the water production system is essential in providing quality water by packaged water producing companies in Nigeria. This study aims at developing water safety plan for selected packaged water manufacturing companies in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Hazard identification and risk assessment were carried out based on site inspection studies, key informant interview, questionnaire survey and water sample analysis, and risk analysis using semi-quantitative risk matrix approach. The results revealed a total of 26 possible hazardous events which may compromise water quality such as on-site septic tanks and effluents discharged at source water and improper maintenance and hygiene practices within the system. Based on these, appropriate mitigation and monitoring plans were drawn for action. The research found that water safety plan is feasible for the packaged water systems, and therefore calls on the relevant stakeholders for urgent implementation towards ensuring clean drinking water and protecting public health as more and more people are opting for packaged waters due to uncertain public water safety.

This paper investigates the impact of biohazards and pandemics on construction workers’ health and well-being. A proper selection of control methods for biohazards and pandemics like COVID-19 pandemic will result in improved public health conditions. Occupational risks in the construction industry are also examined, with a focus on biohazards and pandemics, their containment, and the implications for health and safety. A safer work environment in the construction industry is encouraged. In this study, some statistical methods were used to analyse the data obtained from sampled questionnaire. According to the findings, fewer people in poor developing countries get routine check-ups compared to developed countries. The construction industries studied have little or no insurance plans for staff. It also demonstrates that personal protective equipment (PPE) such as nasal masks, helmets, hand gloves, and work aprons can assist in the control of biohazards in the construction sector, such as asthma, cancer, and asbestosis. There should be safety awareness programmes, conferences, and seminars, as well as first-aid kits and HSE and qualified health workers on all building sites. Sustainable Water Supply for Domestic Use： Application of Roof-Harvested Water for Ground Water Recharge

Rain water harvesting offers a wealth of promising possibilities for many countries. This paper describes a study in which rainwater harvested from the rooftop is used for recharging groundwater in a household well in Ibadan. A rainwater harvesting structure was designed to be 1.2 m deep, 2.6 m long and 0.66 m wide, filled with gravel and fine sand at different layers. Rainwater harvested in a storage tank is passed with the aid of a hose pipe to the rainwater harvesting structure on a daily basis to recharge the groundwater in the well. A well in the neighborhood serves as control for this experiment, which went on for a month. The volume of rainwater used to recharge the groundwater in the well was recorded daily for the study period. The results indicated that using rainwater to recharge the groundwater in the well led to conservation of the water in the well through reduced evaporation. Thus, the well yields water all the year round as compared to the control well that dries up during the dry season.

Result on the Convergence Behavior of Solutions of Certain System of Third-Order Nonlinear Differential Equations

Convergence behaviors of solutions arising from certain system of third-order nonlinear differential equations are studied. Such convergence of solutions corresponding to extreme stability of solutions when relates a pair of solutions of the system considered. Using suitable Lyapunov functionals, we prove that the solutions of the nonlinear differential equation are convergent. Result obtained generalizes and improves some known results in the literature. Example is included to illustrate the result.

Circulation of the low pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N2 virus in ducks at a live bird market in Ibadan, Nigeria

Background:To monitor carrier hosts of avian influenza in Nigeria,we randomly collected cloaca swab specimens from 155 ducks at a live bird market(LBM)in Ibadan,southwest Nigeria,between July 2011 and July ***:The samples were analyzed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and virus isolation was carried out in embryonated chicken *** sequencing of the antigenic cleavage site of the haemagglutinin(HA)gene was performed,multiple sequence alignment was carried out using ClustalW,and a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the neighbor joining ***:Twenty(13%)of the 155 samples were positive for avian influenza subtype H5N2 by real-time RT-PCR and three isolates were obtained from embryonated chicken *** sequencing of the amino acid cleavage site of the HA genes of two isolates corresponded to a PQRETGL*F sequence that is common in low pathogenic avian influenza(LPAI).Phylogenetically,the HA genes of the two influenza viruses are monophyletic and clustered with H5N2 viruses detected in wild ducks from ***:The occurrence of LPAI in domestic ducks in Nigeria underscores the importance of continuous surveillance and monitoring of the virus(in a country that is considered to be free of avian influenza)in order to prevent the emergence of virulent strains that may spread to commercial poultry and humans.

A new approach to the surgical treatment of parasitic cysts of the liver:Hepatectomy using the liver hanging maneuver

AIM： To review 11 patients with parasitic cysts of the liver, who were treated by hepatic Iobectomy using the liver hanging maneuver （LHM）.METHODS： Between January 2003 and June 2006, we retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent surgical treatment due to parasitic cysts of the liver, at the Ege University School of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. Of these, the patients who underwent hepatic lobectomy using the LHM were reviewed and evaluated for surgical treatment outcome.RESULTS： Over a three-year period, there were 102 patients who underwent surgical treatment for parasitic cysts of the liver. Of these, 11 （10%） patients with parasitic cysts of the liver underwent hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM. Presenting symptoms were abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and cholangitis. Cyst locations were as follows： right lobe filled with cyst, 7 （63%）; segmental location, 2 （18%）; and multiple locations, 2 patients （18%）. All patients underwent hepatic Iobectomy with an anterior approach using the LHM. The intraoperative blood transfusion requirement was one unit for 3 patients and two units for one patient. Postoperative complications included pulmonary atelectasy （2, 18%） and pleural effusion （2, 18%）. No significant morbidity or mortality was observed.CONCLUSION： We concluded that hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM should be considered, not only for hepatic tumors or donor hepatectomy, but also to treat parasitic cysts of the liver.

Traffic Regulation at Critical Intersections: A Case Study of Odole Intersection, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria

Traffic congestion on major roads consequent upon existing bottlenecks at intersections is a major problem in Akure Metropolis. To change this trend, this research was carried out in order to design effective traffic control mechanisms at the “troubled spots” in the metropolis. Odole intersection was identified as one of the critical intersections during a reconnaissance survey and as such, selected for study. Data on geometric features were collected using Oedometer and Google Earth software. Peak and off-peak traffic volume data were collected between 7:30 and 8:30 am and between 12.00 noon and 1.00 pm respectively every other day using Cine camera. Furthermore, discharge headway and delay data were collected using stop watch. The geometric and traffic data collected were analysed using Microsoft Excel. An appraisal of Odole Intersection indicated that the major contributors to traffic are Motorcycles (70.88%) and Passenger Cars (28.72%). Other modes of transportation account for about 0.4% of vehicles traversing the intersection. The critical traffic volume at the intersection was over 4000 veh/hr and the average delay was 22 seconds. An Average delay of 22 seconds at the intersection was an indication that the operating level of service was C (i.e. fairly stable traffic condition with average delays attributable to traffic control by personnel). By juxtaposing the results of geometric and traffic data analyses with the pros and cons of various traffic control mechanisms, traffic control by signalisation was selected and designed to suit Odole intersection. In tandem with the results of this research, appropriate measures have been recommended to ameliorate traffic and commuting problems in the metropolis.
