Integrated Landsat Imagery and Geophysical Exploration for Groundwater Potential Evaluation of Okene and Its Environs, Southwestern Nigeria

In this study, an integrated remote sensing and geophysical (aeromagnetic and geo-electric) methods was employed to assess the potential of groundwater in a basement complex terrain of Okene and its environs, Southwestern, Nigeria. Landsat imagery acquired over the study area was processed in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment to delineate the surface lineaments, drainage networks and their orientations. Aeromagnetic data over the area were analyzed and its derivative maps were interpreted to further map the structures and the geology in the subsurface;depths to magnetic sources were determined using spectral analysis. Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) of geo-electric method was interpreted to map the subsurface geology layers. The results of the integrated data were correlated with borehole yield data of the area for effective interpretation. Delineated lineaments from the azimuth, frequency plot showed dominant trends in the NE-SW and NNE-SSW directions. Radial average power spectrum revealed the depth to magnetic sources between 100 and 2500 m and the interpreted VES data characterized the area into three to four subsurface layers. In correlating the results with borehole yield data, the zones with high lineament density and low/negative magnetic anomaly were categorized as high groundwater potential zones while areas with low lineament density and high/positive magnetic anomaly as low groundwater potential zones. This study will guide efficiently subsequent groundwater drilling program in the study area.

Detection and Mapping of Violent Crime Hotspots in Southwestern Nigeria

The increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria, especially the southwest requires a paradigm shift from popular approach to crime hotspots detection. This study employed geospatial technologies to integrate spatio-temporal crime, social media and field observation data from the communities in all the six states in the southwest to develop crime hotspots that can serve as preliminary information to assist in allocating resources for crime control and prevention. Historical crime data from January 1972 to April, 2021 were compiled and updated with rigorous field survey in September, 2021. The field data were encoded, input to the SPSS 17 and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. A total 936 crime locations data were geolocated and exported to ArcGIS 10.5 for spatial mapping using point map operation and further imported to e-Spatial web-based and QGIS for the generation of hotspot map using heatmap tool. The results revealed that armed robbery, assassination and cultism were more pronounced in Lagos and Ogun States. Similarly, high incidences of farmers/herdsmen conflicts are observed in Oyo and Osun States. Increasing incidences of kidnapping are common in all the south-western states but very prominent in Ondo, Lagos and Oyo States. Most of the violent crime incidents took place along the highways, with forests being their hideouts. Violent crimes are dominantly caused by high rate of unemployment while farmer/herdsmen conflicts were majorly triggered by the scarcity of grazing fields and destruction of arable crops. The conflicts have resulted in the increasing cases of rape and disruption of social group, intake of hard drugs, cult-related activities, low income and revenue generation, and displacement of farmers and infrastructural damages. Power-flow-tracing-based congestion management in hydro-thermal optimal power flow algorithm

This paper presents a method for managing congestion constraints in a hydro-thermal optimal power flow solution procedure. The congestion constraint is handled in this paper as an active power generation constraint. To achieve this solution, a power flow tracing technique is used to detect the generators contributing to line congestion and penalize themby reducing their outputs. The congestion is then removed by setting the maximum power of the affected generators to the penalized value. The proposed algorithm is implemented using MATLAB software. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is tested and the results for the 5-bus,30-bus, and 34-bus Nigerian power networks are presented.

Comparative assessment of agricultural technology generating practices in universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria

To understand the technology generating practices among universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria,this study examined sources of funds for technology generating activities,compared agro-technology generating practices and identified constraining factors hindering technology generating *** hundred and fifty-two academic staff were randomly selected from universities and one hundred and thirty-six respondents were drawn from research *** questionnaires with reliability coefficient of r=0.92 were used to elicit *** were analyzed using descriptive statistics,Likert-scale,T-test and Factor ***(93.4%)of universities’respondents used their personal funds to generate new technology compared to their counterparts in research *** most widely employed mechanism for generating agricultural technologies was joint radio programmes(mean=3.38)while the least was biotechnology(mean=2.57).Major areas of differences in technology generation between the two institutions were the physical distance(t=13.54;P<0.05),farmers participation in field research trials(t=8.50;P<0.05),farmers co-finance of adaptive research trials(t=3.77;P<0.05)and adequate research facilities and incentives to workers(t=2.05;P<0.05).Factors constraining technology generation for universities were poor access to knowledge and information on new innovation(r=0.815)while for research institutes it was limited physical resources(ICT,Telephone)(r=0.801).It was recommended therefore that respondents should look into options of writing alternate fund proposals and submitting to a wider range of funding *** of innovation could be strengthened through the formation of a formal technological linkage advisory council.

With a view to providing a tool to accurately model time series processes which may be corrupted with errors such as measurement,round-off and data aggregation,this study developedan integrated moving average(IMA)model with a transition matrix for the errors resulting ina convex combination of two ARMA *** on interest rates in the United States andNigeria were used to demonstrate the application of the formulated *** tools such asthe autocovariance function,maximum likelihood method,Newton–Raphson iterative methodand Kolmogorov–Smirnov test statistic were employed to examine and fit the formulated specification to *** results showed that the proposed model provided a generalisation and amore flexible specification than the existing models of AR error and ARMA error in fitting timeseries processes in the presence of errors.

Therapeutic and Immunomodulatory Effects of Raw Maize ＂OGI＂ on Rats Infected with Escherichia coil 0157：H7

Escherichia coli O157：H7 is known to cause food borne illness globally. Treatment of infections caused by this organism is difficult because the administration of antibiotics might precipitate kidney complications; therefore there is the need to search for alternative therapy. In this study, the therapeutic and immunomodulatory effects of raw maize ＂ogi＂ was investigated on rats infected with Escherichia coli 0157：H7. Infected rats treated with maize ＂ogi＂ slurry 1.0 mL once or twice daily and maize ＂ogi＂ liquor, 1.0 mL twice daily recovered 72 h while those that were treated with less than 1.0 mL recovered by 96 h. Without treatment with ＂ogi＂ however, the rats started recovering by 120 h. The treatment caused the white blood cells which had already gone up as a result of the infection to reduce significantly （P 〈 0.05） by 24 h of administration of raw fermented maize ＂ogi＂ components to the infected rats. It also caused a significant decrease in the lymphocyte counts of the infected and treated rats by 24 h. On the other hand, there was an increase in the neutrophil count irrespective of the different volumes and different components of raw ＂ogi＂ used by 24 h but by the 72 h of treatment, it started to decrease and by 120 h reduced to normal levels. Since the administration of raw maize ＂ogi＂ either slurry or liquor caused the duration of infection in rats infected with Escherichia coli 0157：H7 to reduce from 120 h to 72 h, it is therefore suggested that people having diarrhoea caused by this organism could drink fermented raw maize ＂ogi＂ slurry or liquor to treat the infection.

Microwave-Alkaline Assisted Pretreatment of Banana Trunk for Bioethanol Production

Pretreatment is one of the most important steps in the production bioethanol from lignocellulose materials. Alkaline pretreatment is a common mean of pretreatment but microwave oven could assist its efficiency as it can reduce the pretreatment time and improve the enzymatic activity during hydrolysis. The aim of this paper is to determine lignin removal from banana trunk using microwave-assisted alkaline （NaOH and NH4OH） pretreatments. The best pretreatment conditions were used for mass pretreatment before hydrolysis and fermentation. The result shows that, optimum lignin removal was with microwave-assisted NaOH pretreatment with the removal of up to 98% lignin at 2% （w/v （weight/volum）） sodium hydroxide, 170 W microwave power at 10 rain. Microwave-assisted ammonium hydroxide pretreatment achieved 97% lignin removal at 1% ammonium hydroxide concentration and 680 W microwave power at 5 min. Microwave- alkaline assisted pretreatment increased the yield and quality of fermentable sugar after enzyme hydrolysis with NH4OH and ammonium hydroxide yielding 40% and 39% of ethanol, respectively. This result reveals that, well controlled microwave- alkaline assisted pretreatment of banana trunk could effectively remove lignin and give high bioethanol yield.

The effects of ethylacetate extract of red onion(Allium cepa)tunic(ACTE)on some hemodynamic and biochemical parameters were evaluated in normotensive albino *** pressure parameters were determined in anaesthetized rats orally administered ACTE(10-,20-,or 40 mg/kg)or ramipril(1 mg/kg)once daily for 14 ***,10-,20-,or 40 mg/kg ACTE produced significant(P<0.01),dose-dependent fall in systolic blood pressure,SBP(21%,27%,33%),diastolic blood pressure,DBP(6%,10%,16%),pulse pressure,PP(42%,49%,56%),mean arterial blood pressure,MAPB(13%,18%,23%)and heart rate,HR(4%,5%,7%).The highest effective dose(40 mg/kg)compared well with ramipril(1 mg/kg)with regards to SBP(41%),DBP(19%),PP(70%),MABP(29%)and HR(10%).Similar trends(decreases)were recorded for 40 mg/kg ACTE and ramipril,respectively,as regards the activities of serum enzymes:creatine kinase(60%and 65%),ALT(18%and 14%)and ALP(28%and 16%).HPLC fingerprints of the flavonoid-rich ACTE revealed that flavonols:quercetin,quercitrin,isoquercitrin,rutin and kaempferol are the active *** results demonstrate the hypotensive effect of *** tunic flavonoids initiating further investigation of their individual or synergistic contribution(s)to the observed effects.

The effects of chemical agent(Sodium Azide)on Onion growing in organic and inorganic fertile soil was to be examined during this *** analysis work was carried out within the green house of the research laboratory technology of the Oke Ogun Science Laboratory Technology,Saki,Oyo *** seeds were soaked inside different beakers containing the mixture of Sodium Azide and water mixed with 10 ml of Phosphate solution for 4 ***,the control was soaked with normal water and 10 ml of Phosphate buffer *** treated seeds of onions was planted in plastic containers containing 4.2 g of weighed humus soil within the green house at the Department of research lab Technology of The Oke Ogun polytechnic school,Saki Oyo *** samples parameter were taken daily for six consecutive *** result obtained was additionally subjected to statistical analysis by using DMRT *** results showed that the stem length was ranged from 11.39±0.62 and 9.98±0.52 with sample of onion without sodium Azide and inorganic had the highest stem length values and samples of onion with Sodium Azide and inorganic had very cheap stem ***,the leave length ranged from 29.63±0.12 and 22.45±0.10 with the Onion samples with inorganic and Organic fertilizers which had the highest leave length and sample of onion without Sodium Azide was very low leave *** results of this study showed that each one the parameters studied within the plant were low with Sodium Azide *** decrease in plant growth,plant heights,root lengths,and Phaonerogam survival,fruit yield per plant and height at maturity with agent *** is hereof suggested that Sodium Azide(NaN3)was expected to produce mutation in onion that area unit extremely liable to harmful pathogens and making them cheap to be useful for farmers.

Cadaveric Evaluation of Lumbar Pedicle Morphometry among Nigerians

Pedicle screw is employed in several cases of spine disorders such as fractures, pseudarthrosis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative changes among others. Its essence is to fix the vertebral body in position until fusion is complete. The success of this technique depends on factors like choice of size of screw for a particular pedicle size and shape. Thus, adequate knowledge of the morphometry of lumbar pedicle may avert intraoperative and postoperative complications associated with this technique, especially, neurological impairments. In this study, we determined the vertical and horizontal diameters, interpedicular distance and gender differences of 180 lumbar vertebral pedicles (140 male, 40 female pedicles) using digital vernier calipers. Results revealed a significant increase in pedicle height and width from L2 to L5. Interpedicular distance increased significantly down the vertebrae from L2 to L5. Mean vertical and horizontal diameters, interpedicular distance were not significantly different in both sexes. This study recommends a thorough check of individual’s spinal anatomy in pre-operative assessments.
