Negative thermal expansion and phase transition of low-temperature Mg_(2)NiH_(4)

The negative thermal expansion(NTE) phenomenon is of great significance in fabricating zero thermal expansion(ZTE) materials to avoid thermal shock during heating and cooling. NTE is observed in limited groups of materials, e.g., metal cyanides, oxometallates, and metalorganic frameworks, but has not been reported in the family of metal hydrides. Herein, a colossal and continuous negative thermal expansion is firstly developed in the low-temperature phases of LT1-and LT2-Mg_(2)NiH_(4) between 488 K and 733 K from in-situ transmission electron microscope(TEM) video, with the volume contraction reaching 18.7% and 11.3%, respectively. The mechanisms for volume contraction of LT1 and LT2 phases are elucidated from the viewpoints of phase transformation, magnetic transition, and dehydrogenation, which is different from common NTE materials containing flexible polyhedra units in the structure. The linear volume shrinkage of LT2 in the temperature of 488-553 K corresponds to the phase transition of LT2→HT with a thermal expansion coefficient of -799.7 × 10^(-6) K^(-1) revealed by in-situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. The sudden volume contraction in LT1 between 488 and 493 K may be caused by the rapid dehydrogenation of LT1 to Mg_(2)Ni. The revealed phenomenon in single composite material with different structures would be significant for preparing zero thermal expansion materials by tuning the fraction of LT1 and LT2 phases.

Study on Flexible Power Generation Device Using Piezoelectric Film

Various ocean energy technologies have been developed that harness several kinds of renewable energy resources of the ocean. However, these technologies suffer from problems such as high construction and maintenance costs, restrictive installation requirements and damage by extraordinary weather conditions. In this paper, we propose a lightweight and FPGD （flexible power generation device） that overcomes these problems. The FPGD essentially consists of piezoelectric films and silicon rubber. Because the FPGD is small and flexible, it is anticipated to efficiently convert fluid energy into electrical energy even when the fluid energy is low. We perform several experiments to confirm the effectiveness of the FPGD and we discuss the results.

Group A Streptococcus(GAS;Streptococcus pyogenes)is one of the most versatile bacteria among human ***-invasive GAS infections can cause common diseases,such as pharyngitis and *** invasive GAS infections can lead to rapid progressive and life-threatening manifestations,including necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome with high mortality rates ranging from 30%to 70%.Therefore,GAS is also known as"killer microbes"or"flesh-eating bacteria".During severe invasive GAS infections,anti-bacterial immunity is impeded by attenuation of the cellular components of innate immune ***,this loss of protection is compensated for by interferon-γ-producing immature myeloid cells,which are recruited upon severe invasive GAS infections in mouse *** this review,we discuss and summarize the current knowledge on the role of interferon-γ-producing myeloid cells and other myeloid cells in the prevention and control of severe invasive GAS infections.

Mechanical Properties of Small Clear Wood Specimens of <i>Pinus patula</i>Planted in Malawi

Pinus patula is one of the major exotic species grown in Malawi mainly for saw-timber production. It is native to Mexico. Little has been reported about the mechanical properties of the wood. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of Pinus patula in more detail, in order to provide a basis for utilizing this resource. The mechanical properties of small clear wood specimens of Pinus patula were evaluated using 40 cm logs from 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 m above the ground. Small clear wood specimens were selected and subjected to a bending test in accordance with Japan Industrial Standards (JIS) air-dry conditions. The growth rate did not affect the mechanical properties measured. There were significant correlations at 1% level between air-dry density and Modulus Of Elasticity (MOE) (R = 0.85) and between air-dry density and Modulus Of Rupture (MOR) (R = 0.83). There was also a significant correlation between MOE and MOR at 1% level (R = 0.90). At about 12% moisture content, the tested five Pinus patula families have average MOR and MOE of 105.17 MPa and 10.93 GPa, respectively.

Ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma mimicking a retroperitoneal tumor:A case report

BACKGROUND An ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma(EHCC)arises from the ectopic liver which is defined as a hepatic organ or tissue not connected to surrounding *** is a rare disease and it is difficult to diagnose ***,the clinical features are not fully *** SUMMARY A retroperitoneal tumor(6 cm)was located at the dorsal side of the pancreas head on abdominal ultrasonography in an 81-year old woman positive for hepatitis C virus *** enhanced-computed tomography and gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed viable HCC patterns with early enhancement and delayed *** tumor markers-serum alphafetoprotein and alpha-fetoprotein-L3%-were increased to 30.1 ng/m L and83.1%,*** induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-Ⅱwas within normal levels(17 m AU/m L).Positron emission tomography-computed tomography showed strong accumulation into the tumor(Standardized Uptake Value max:13.8),and the tumor cytology following endoscopic ultrasoundguided fine needle aspiration showed poorly differentiated *** extirpation was performed,and operative findings showed that the retroperitoneal tumor was disconnected from the pancreas and the *** lymph nodes near the tumor were histologically *** histological examination,the tumor was finally diagnosed as EHCC with Arginase-1 positive *** We report our experience of a rare EHCC which was difficult to diagnose,and we present a review of the literature.

How Do Weekly Magazines Provide Information on Urogenital Cancer to the Public in Aged Societies?

Little information on cancer coverage rather than newspaper and television is available. Japanese weekly magazines have a circulation of over 2,700,000 per week. To examine how they delivered urogenital cancer information to the public, cancer-related articles and advertisements in six major Japanese weekly magazines from 2009 to 2010 was analyzed. 1.8% of total articles and advertisements were cancer-related. Prostate cancer (n = 119) was the second-most common topic, following lung cancer (n = 145), whereas only three articles were published on kidney or bladder cancer. The 53 articles on therapies for prostate cancer comprised radiotherapy (n = 29), surgery (n = 16), chemotherapy (n = 4), and others (n = 4). All 42 comments or interviews were cited in the article on prostate cancer, while 26 of them were attributed to only two famous doctors. Although cancer coverage in weekly magazines could be useful to spread information on prostate cancer, we should recognize their considerable bias based on a disproportionate emphasis.

In-situ evaluation for activated concrete in accelerator facility with scintillation-type gamma-ray spectrometer

The assessment of activated concrete is particularly difficult during the decommissioning of an accelerator *** analysis by core boring is the only method of investigating the activity of concrete *** address this problem,an in-situ and nondestructive analysis method was developed to determineγ-ray-emitting nuclides and their specific activities in the concrete walls and floor by using a portable germanium semiconductor *** this work,we examined a substitute for Ge detector to establish a simpler and more convenient *** candidates,we focused on some scintillation type spectrometers,and the possibility of a substitute for a Ge detector was examined by both simulation and *** detection limits were roughly estimated through Monte Carlo simulation for various scintillation crystals,and it was found that 1.5-inch LaBr3,CeBr3,and SrI2 could distinguish the clearance *** was confirmed that the 1.5-inch LaBr3 could reproduce the calibration curve of the Ge detector in the *** required thickness and length of the radiation shield for suppressing the background radiation during the measurement was also determined for the convenience of an actual decommissioning work.
