In Tokyo, as residential areas exist in the urban areas and are composed of areas owned by individual land owners, basically spatial changes are brought by redevelopments of each sites conducted by individual circumstances and motivations. Continuous redevelopments and spatial changes can be found dispersedly in areas. Once the spatial change in a certain site occurred in an area as a building, it will be contained in the built environment of the residential area which is defined by residents, planners and designers who will take part in the following spatial changes. In Tokyo, public transportation facilities are well developed, and residents＇ daily life involves activities such as a slow walking and bicycle, etc. around the place of residence near the public transportation hubs, each living territories are formed in this kind of manner. Considering the maintenance of spatial value in residential areas while understanding transformation of visual local environment in residential areas which focuses on appearance of each spatial change in an area of street will be of significant importance. In this paper, the authors try to describe interactions of spatial changes in existing urban residential areas focusing on utility of players who might take part in the following spatial changes and the method of discrete choice model.

Structure of Professional Identity of Public Health Nurses Working for Governmental Agencies

Background: Public health nurses in Japan are nationally licensed professionals who act as members of local governments and provide services to local community residents. Public health nurses must establish their professional identity early on in order to deliver high quality public health services. However, the structure of their professional identity is not fully understood. Objectives: Our purpose was to investigate structures of professional identity of public health nurses working for governmental agencies, and to clarify characteristics of their professional identity. Methods: Questionnaire surveys were conducted on 670 PHNs working for local governmental agencies. The investigation items included measurement indices for professional identity of PHNs, basic attributes, and scales which reflect aspects of self-respect. After analyzing the investigated items, we conducted exploratory factor analysis. Also we named extracted factors, and investigated reliability and appropriateness. Relationships with the attributes or self-respect aspects were also analyzed. Results: Of 350 respondents (52.2%), 309 effective answers (effective answer ratio: 88.2%) were analyzed. Item and factor analyses identified 12 items, which were categorized into 3 factors: “intention to develop professionally”, “confidence in own abilities”, and “occupational affinity”. Scales of self-respect aspects and the index for professional identity showed positive correlation. The coefficient for all 12 items was 0.89. Significant difference with the attributes were noted for “age”, “years of experience as PHNs”, and “number of PHN in the workplace”. Conclusion: Professional identify of PHNs is found to be consisted of 3 factors.

Recently, Japan has experienced a low birthrate and an aging population. The development of communication robots, such as cleaning and a care-giver robot, has been progressing. Care-giver robots provide daily assistance, including contacting emergency services. This study is part of the ＂study on planning techniques of living space in harmony with robots＂, and focused on the elderly. Minimum distance was the subjects felt ＂I do not want any more approached＂. Subjects were 21 elderly persons （eight males and thirteen females）, aged 66-86 years. The experimental room was an assembly room in a public accommodation （14 m× 6.5 m）. The small mobile robot used in this experiment was external form dimensions of 120 mm （W）× 130 mm （D）× 70 mm （H）, In this experiment, considering the personal space as the small mobile robot is watching robot without support function for person. The robot moved toward standing or sitting subjects at constant velocities from a distance 5 m apart. Research factors are 5 angles （0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°） and 2 speeds （0.08 m/s and 0.24 m/s）.

In Japan, robots are a regular feature of daily life and in rehabilitation support care and reporting on any emergencies involving the elderly. This study is on design guidelines for the living space with robots and can be applied to the architectural planning and focused on the basic environmental primary factor. The key terms were space, people-adult male and female, positions, and the robot-size, speed-settings and approaching angles. This research is the distances a small mobile robot moves to an adult male compared with that toward an adult female. The authors focus on a small mobile robot and identify the distances from which the robot can approach individuals, and also clarify how the distances to individuals change as the robot＇s speed and angle of approach varies. The study did this experiment to analyze 30 patterns per person and also when at an angle of the difference of male and female, two position standing/seated and three speed-settings0.08 m/sec, 0.24 m/sec and 0.48 m/sec and five directions--0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°.

A Study for the Environmental Design Supporting an Intellectual Activity

Japan is facing a demographic challenge of a falling birthrate coupled with an aging society that is already adversely affecting the economy. The situation is only expected to worsen as the working-age population continues to decrease. Well aware of this situation, businesses and offices are seeking ways to enhance the intellectual productivity of their workers. This paper explores environmental elements of work spaces that might stimulate intellectual activity. Using a CAD （AutoCAD） miniature garden program, subjects were asked to design a project room that is optimized for creative work using a certain number of elements--11 types of walls, 14 types of floors, 4 types of scenery, 3 types of furniture and 3 types of plantings--but the subjects were free to position and arrange these elements any way they want. The subjects were then interviewed using the evaluation grid method. Based on the results, we created an evaluation structure diagram by analyzing key words and phrases emphasized by subjects in the interviews. The overall evaluation structure represents a summary overview of all 30 subjects who participated in the experiment. This approach captures all the key elements of the office environment that might be used to stimulate intellectual activity of employees.

Japanese Version of the Parent Health Locus of Control Scales: Validity and Reliability

The Parent Health Locus of Control (PHLOC) Scales measure parents’ beliefs about the factors that affect their children’s health. The aim of our study was to develop a Japanese version of the Parent Health Locus of Control (JPHLOC) Scales and to verify its validity and reliability. The JPHLOC scales consist of six scales: Professional Influence, Parental Influence, Child Influence, Media Influence, Fate Influence, and God, Buddha, and the Spirits Influence. Our questionnaire was administered to 231 principal caregivers from Japan whose children were under 6 years of age. The items, related to the “God, Buddha, and the Spirits Influence” scale, showed a floor effect. The exploratory factor analysis indicated that JPHLOC’ six factors functioned similarly to the PHLOC’ factors. The Fate Influence and Child Influence factor structures in JPHLOC scales were different from the corresponding factor structures in the original PHLOC scales in the functioning of only one item. There were statistically significant correlations between JPHLOC scales and Japanese version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), which add evidence to the criterion-related validity of JPHLOC scales. Furthermore, applying the known-groups method, our study showed that there was a significant difference across the JPHLOC scale scores, owning to differences in the children’s and caregivers’ demographics, which provides an evidence for construct validity. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the six scales were estimated between 0.73 and 0.93. In a test-retest study, the interclass correlation coefficients for the six scales were ranged between 0.80 and 0.90. The results suggested that the JPHLOC scales have sufficient reliability and validity. The JPHLOC scales are applicable to the caregivers of healthy children. We confirm that the PHLOC scales are also applicable to Japanese caregivers.

A Study about the Effect of Space Size on the Individual Distance

This study is the design guidelines for the living space with robots. The study can be applied to the architectural planning and focused on the basic environmental primary factor. The authors focused on space size, specifical distance from the wall in the front direction, position, and distance between an individual as factors affecting individual distance. The authors research the distances a small mobile robot moves to a six mats space compared with that toward a distances 5 m or more （space less physical factors）. The following three results were obtained：（1） The individual distance is smaller than 30 cm in both the approach angle in the experiment space of six mats; （2） The distance from the wall in the front increased, and the individual distance between a participant and a robot also increased; （3） In terms of body position, the upright positioning was clarified and the individual distance was small.

This paper seeks to envision future architectural planning as it relates to living with robots and to clarify the research theme for it. Living with robots is no longer a fantasy seen just on TV or in movies. The concept of the intelligent space emerged from the field of robotics in the mid-1990s. The idea of the intelligent space is that the robot will support the architecture and users of the space by keeping in close contact with architectural space equipped with intelligent technologies. The benefit of the intelligent space is that the robot can be smaller and less intelligent because the robot will be assisted by advanced technologies embedded in the architectural space, such as sensors and actuators. Therefore, the robot can consequently assist user＇s activities with delicate care. This paper describes the vision and possibility for architectural planning as it relates to live with robots who can support the inhabitants＇ lives. This paper introduces the study of the relationship between humans and moving robot in architectural space, especially support region for humans by desktop mobile robot.

Objective To review articles aiming to present an overview of the principles, progress, uses and limitations of laser speckle flowgraphy （LSFG） in posterior fundus circulation research. Data sources The data used in this review was obtained mainly from the studies reported in PubMed using the key terms ＂laser speckle＂, ＂ocular blood flowmetry＂ and ＂retinal imaging＂. Study selection Relevant literatures on studies of LSFG were selected. Results LSFG is a unique, noninvasive imaging instrument to quantitatively visualize posterior fundus circulation in vivo This review delineates the LSFG principles and development, demonstrates its extensive applicability for measurement of retina, choroid and optic nerve head circulation, compares it with other retinal imaging technologies and discusses unresolved issues. Conclusions LSFG is a noninvasive, two-dimensional objective diagnostic technique that has become a powerful method for the clinical and scientific assessment of posterior fundus circulation. Further studies may help to develop a more comprehensive evidence-based measurement and facilitate the correlation with other methods for chorioretinal circulation assessment.
