Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging features of hepatic hemangioma compared with enhanced computed tomography

AIM:To clarify features of hepatic hemangiomas on gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriaminpentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared with enhanced computed tomography (CT). METHODS:Twenty-six patients with 61 hepatic hem- angiomas who underwent both Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and enhanced CT were retrospectively reviewed. Hemangioma appearances (presence of peripheral nodular enhancement, central nodular enhancement, diffuse homogenous enhancement, and arterioportal shunt during the arterial phase, fill-in enhancement during the portal venous phase, and prolonged enhancement during the equilibrium phase) on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and enhanced CT were *** degree of contrast enhancement at the enhancing portion within the hemangioma was visually assessed using a five-point scale during each phase. For quantitative analysis, the tumor-muscle signal intensity ratio (SIR), the liver-muscle SIR, and the attenuation value of the tumor and liver parenchyma were calculated. The McNemar test and the Wilcoxon's signed rank test were used to assess the significance of differences in the appearances of hemangiomas and in the visual grade of tumor contrast enhancement between Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and enhanced CT. RESULTS:There was no significant difference between Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and enhanced CT in the presence of peripheral nodular enhancement (85% vs 82%), central nodular enhancement (3% vs 3%), diffuse enhancement (11% vs 16%), or arterioportal shunt (23% vs 34%) during arterial phase, or fill-in enhancement (79% vs 80%) during portal venous phase. Prolonged enhancement during equilibrium phase was observed less frequently on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI than on enhanced CT (52% vs 100%, P < 0.001). BACKGROUND Emergency pancreaticoduodenectomy(EPD)is a rare event for complex periam-pullary *** intraoperative blood loss is correlated with poor post-operative *** SUMMARY Two patients underwent EPD using a no-touch isolation technique,in which all arteries supplying the pancreatic head region were ligated and divided before manipulation of the pancreatic head and *** operative times were 220 and 239 min,and the blood loss was 70 and 270 g,*** patients were discharged on the 14^(th) and 10^(th) postoperative day,***-two patients underwent EPD for the treatment of neoplastic *** mean operative time was 361.6 min,and the mean blood loss was 747.3 *** comp-lication rate was 37.5%.The in-hospital mortality rate was 9.38%.CONCLUSION The no-touch isolation technique is feasible,safe,and effective for reducing intraoperative blood loss in EPD.

A Comparative Study of Two Tree-Based Models for Predicting Flyrock Velocity at Open Pit Bench Mining

Blasting is a cost-effective technique to break hard rock volumes by using explosives in the mining and civil engineering realms. Moreover, although blasting is a designed process and plays an indispensable role in these industries, it can also have multiple adverse environmental impacts. One such effect is flyrock, which poses risks to nearby machinery, and residential structures, and can even lead to injuries or fatalities. To optimize blasting efficiency as well as restrict side effects, prediction of the blast aftereffects is vital. Therefore, the present work focuses on using two machine learning methods to predict the velocity of flyrock in the open pit mine. To address this issue, a comprehensive dataset was gathered from the open pit mine. Then, Decision Tree and Random Forest algorithms were employed to predict flyrock velocity. The Random Forest model demonstrated superior performance compared to the Decision Tree model. Nonetheless, the performance of the Decision Tree model was deemed satisfactory, as evidenced by its coefficient of determination value of 0.83, mean squared error (MSE) of 4.2, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 5.6%. Considering these metrics, it is reasonable to conclude that tree-based algorithms can be effective in predicting flyrock velocity.

Prophylactic Pattern Scanning Laser Retinal Photocoagulation for Diabetic Retinopathy in Spontaneously Diabetic Torii Fatty Rats: Preliminary Experimental Results

Research Background and Purpose: The number of diabetic patients is rapidly increasing, making it crucial to find methods to prevent diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of blindness. We investigated the effects of prophylactic pattern scanning laser retinal photocoagulation on DR development in Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats as a new prevention approach. Methods: Photocoagulation was applied to the right eyes of 8-week-old Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats, with the left eyes serving as untreated controls. Electroretinography at 9 and 39 weeks of age and pathological examinations, including immunohistochemistry for vascular endothelial growth factor and glial fibrillary acidic protein at 24 and 40 weeks of age, were performed on both eyes. Results: There were no significant differences in amplitude and prolongation of the OP waves between the right and left eyes in SDT fatty rats at 39 weeks of age. Similarly, no significant differences in pathology and immunohistochemistry were observed between the right and left eyes in SDT fatty rats at 24 and 40 weeks of age. Conclusion: Prophylactic pattern scanning retinal laser photocoagulation did not affect the development of diabetic retinopathy in SDT fatty rats.

Positive Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Visual Verbal Working Memory in Patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Background: Working memory is an executive function that plays an important role in many aspects of daily life, and its impairment in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects quality of life. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been a good target site for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) due to its intense involvement in working memory. In our 2018 study, tDCS improved visual-verbal working memory in healthy subjects. Objective: This study examines the effects of tDCS on ADHD patients, particularly on verbal working memory. Methods: We conducted an experiment involving verbal working memory of two modalities, visual and auditory, and a sustained attention task that could affect working memory in 9 ADHD patients. Active or sham tDCS was applied to the left DLPFC in a single-blind crossover design. Results: tDCS significantly improved the accuracy of visual-verbal working memory. In contrast, tDCS did not affect auditory-verbal working memory and sustained attention. Conclusion: tDCS to the left DLPFC improved visual-verbal working memory in ADHD patients, with important implications for potential ADHD treatments.

BACKGROUND Postoperative aortobronchial fistula(ABF)is a rare complication that can occur in 0.3%-5.0%of patients over an extended period of time after thoracic aortic *** visualization of the fistula via imaging is *** To investigate the relationship between computed tomography(CT)findings and the clinical signs/symptoms of ABF after thoracic aortic *** Six patients(mean age 71 years,including 4 men and 2 women)with suspected ABF on CT(air around the graft)at our hospital were included in this retrospective study between January 2004 and September *** CT findings included direct confirmation of ABF,peri-graft fluid,ring enhancement,dirty fat sign,atelectasis,pulmonary hemorrhage,and bronchodilation,and the clinical course were retrospectively *** proportion of each type of CT finding was *** ABF detection after surgery was found to have a mean and median of 14 and 13 years,*** signs and symptoms were asymptomatic in 4 patients,bloody sputum was found in 1 patient,and fever was present in 1 *** complications of ABF included graft infection in 2 patients and graft infection with hemoptysis in 2 *** the 6 patients,3 survived,2 died,and 1 was lost to *** locations of the ABFs were as follows:1 in the ascending aorta;1 in the aortic arch;2 in the aortic arch leading to the descending aorta;and 2 in the descending *** were directly confirmed by CT in 4/6(67%)***-graft dirty fat(4/6,67%)and peri-graft ring enhancement(3/6,50%)were associated with graft infection,endoleaks and pseudoaneurysms were associated with hemoptysis(2/6,33%).CONCLUSION Asymptomatic ABF after thoracic aortic surgery can be confirmed on chest *** is useful for the diagnosis of ABF and its complications.

Flow Structure Around the Intake of a Vertical Pump

The flow structure around the intake of a vertical pump is investigated experimentally and numerically in order to obtain a guideline in designing the optimum shape of the intake of vertical pumps, in which their installation area is demanded to be minimum without losing the high performance. We concentrate our attention on the expansion ratio of the intake as a representative characteristic of the shape of the pumps and investigate the effect of the expansion ratio on pump performance. It is concluded that the optimum expansion ratio ranges in 1.1-1.2 if we take into consideration that the area needed for the installation of the pump should be minimum.

Screening of functionalized self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffolds with angiogenic activity for endothelial cell growth

Promotion of angiogenesis in tissue engineering is of vital significance to the survival of transplants,which leads the way of tissue *** this study,we screened six short peptides with potentially angiogenic activities to functionalize self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffolds RADA16-I(Ac-(RADA)4-CONH2).Fluorescence microscopy images of endothelial cells morphology on peptide scaffolds exhibited good cell attachments and Survivals on these six functionalized peptide scaffolds, especially on peptide scaffolds RAD/KLT and RAD/*** proliferation examination also confirmed the excellent cell growth on these two functionalized peptide *** peptide motifs KLT(KLTWQELYQLKYKGI) and PRG(PRGDSGYRGDS) had positive effects on endothelial cell survival and growth,which implied that these two peptides might have great promise for promoting angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo.
