Review of 15 Years of Research on Sediment Heavy Metal Contents and Sediment Nutrient Release in Inland Aquatic Ecosystems,Turkey

Turkey’s inland water ecosystem consists of 33 rivers (177.714 miles), 200 natural lakes (906.118 ha), 159 reservoirs (342.377 ha) and 750 ponds (15.500 ha). Sedimentological studies conducted on inland water ecosystems during the last 15 years in Turkey can be categorized into two main topics. The first group of studies is concerned with heavy metal levels in sediment, with especial reference to the interaction between water, sediment and aquatic organisms. Additionally, the studies in question deal with the potential impacts of heavy metal concentrations on the ecosystem. The second group of studies is concerned with the role of eutrophication in the sediment as a result of serious contamination of inland water ecosystems. It is known that the sediment can directly influence the nutrient level in standing inland waters such as lakes and ponds by way of internal nutrient loading. In this context, studies regarding sediment, overlying water, sediment pore water and nutrient release from the sediment should be emphasized as these are important steps with respect to the eutrophication process. By keeping these studies in mind, the researcher in this study compiled and analyzed studies dealing with inland water ecosystems with differing nutrient levels and uses, including for drinking water, in Turkey’s drainage basins. In addition, field and laboratory studies regarding nutrient release from sediment into Turkey’s inland water ecosystems were evaluated in light of lake management practices.

Rainbow Trout (<i>Oncorhynchus mykiss</i>) Cage Culture: Preliminary Observations of Surface Sediment’s Chemical Parameters and Phosphorus Release in Gokcekaya Reservoir, Turkey

This research was conducted in Gokcekaya Reservoir, which is located on the Sakarya River (Ankara, Turkey). Sediment samples were obtained before and after culture periods at a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farm with a capacity of 950 t·y-1. Total phosphorus (TP: 8.80 ± 0.50 and 9.10% ± 0.20%), total nitrogen (TN: 17.0 ± 0.20 and 17.05% ± 0.10%), organic matter (OM: 14.40 ± 0.40 and 14.60% ± 0.20%), redox potential (327.00 ± 0.08 and 170.00 ± 4.08 mV), water content (97.68 ± 0.28 and 96.38% ± 0.41%) and total organic carbon (TOC: 11.30 ± 0.10 and 13.40% ± 0.10%) were measured before and after the culture period, respectively. The mean rank order of sediment heavy metal was evaluated as Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cr > Cu. The soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in the sediment pore water were 2.52 ± 0.14 and 7.75 ± 1.18 μg·L-1;ammonium (NH3) was measured as 1.13 ± 0.09 and 1.18 ± 0.06 μg·L-1;nitrite (NO2) was 8.83 ± 0.23, 12.75 ± 0.22 μg·L-1;nitrate (NO3) was elevated at 0.14 ± 0.07 and 0.24 ± 0.02 μg·L-1, and positive phosphorus release remained at low levels: 3.35 μg·m-2d-1 (before the culture period, September 2011) and 11.04 μg·m-2d-1 (after the culture period, April 2012). The data on the sediment and the sediment pore water of the rainbow trout culture in Gokcekaya Reservoir shows that the cage culture in its present condition has no negative effect on sediment quality.

Ecological Risk Assesment and Seasonal-Spatial Distribution of Trace Elements in the Surface Sediment of Trabzon Harbour, Turkey

A seasonal-spatial distribution and ecological risk assesment of the surface sediment are provided for Trabzon Harbour, located in the Eastern Black Sea Region. Sediments were collected from three stations, one of which was a control station, and a total of nine heavy metals were analyzed. In the sediment samples, concentrations of iron (Fe: 57.972 ±1.226 −116.250 ±0.554 μg⋅g−1 DW), copper (Cu: 5.790 ±0.250 −14.770 ±0.270 μg⋅g−1 DW), cadmium (Cd: 0.070 ±0.016 −0.232 ±0.005 μg⋅g−1 DW), lead (Pb: 55.100 ±0.540 −4.652 ±0.066 μg⋅g−1 DW), chrome (Cr: 9.232 ±0.046 −28.640 ±0.377 μg⋅g−1 DW), zinc (Zn: 4.592 ±?0.300 −54.322 ±0.437 μg⋅g−1 DW), arsenic (As: 2.702 ±0.233 −6.332 ±0.186 μg⋅g−1 DW), manganese (Mn: 21.175 ±0.374 −41.465 ±0.410 μg⋅g−1 DW), nickel (Ni: 9.272 ±0.042 −54.230 ±0.158 μg⋅g−1 DW), total phosphorus (TP: 0.160 ±0.003 −0.250 ±0.001 μg⋅g−1 DW), total nitrogen (TN: 0.111 ±0.001 −0.161 ±0.001 μg⋅g−1 DW), organic matter (OM: 0.767 ±0.010 −1.750 ±0,009 μg⋅g−1 DW), total organic carbon (TOC: 1.450 ±0.001 −4.407
