Quality and Crop Yield Potential of Moderately Degraded Alfisols Under Different Nutrient Inputs and Cropping Patterns

Crop performance on degraded soil needs special management practices to overcome soil quality limitations. In a 2-year(from summer 2006 to winter 2007–2008) field trial on a moderately degraded Alfisol in Swabi District(34°7′12′′N, 72°28′20′′E), Pakistan,the effects of three cropping patterns, cereal-cereal(CC), cereal-legume(CL), and cereal-cereal and legume intercrop(CLI), were tested in main plots under four fertilization treatments in sub-plots, including no fertilization(control), farmers' practice(FP, 60:45 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5), recommended dose(RD, 120:90:60 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5:K_2O), and integrated nutrient management(INM, 20 t ha^(-1) farmyard manure integrated with 50% N, 100% P, and K of recommended dose), using a split-plot randomized complete block design. The performance of CL was superior than CC in plant height, leaf area index(LAI), cob length, grain yield, biological yield, and grain protein(8%, 26%, 8%, 5%, 10%, and 8% increases, respectively), while CLI confirmed significant improvement only in LAI(25%) over CC. Response to nutrient inputs from all sources was in the order of INM > RD > FP > control, and the maximum net economic return by INM(23% and 2.5 times higher than RD and FP, respectively) indicated severe deficiency of both macro-and micro-nutrients in the soil as well as degraded physical properties. Increases in soil organic matter, total N, total mineral N, available P and K, total porosity, and available water-holding capacity by 6%, 34%, 24%, 50%, 13%, 5%, and 7%, respectively, and decrease in soil bulk density by 4% after four crop seasons indicated optimistic changes in soil quality as a result of the combined effects of fertilization from organic and inorganic sources and legumes within crop rotation. Natural Propulsion with Lorentz Force and Nanoparticles in a Bioinspired Lopsided Ciliated Channel

The transportation of biological and industrial nanofluids by natural propulsion like cilia movement and self-generated contraction-relaxation of flexible walls has tremendous applications in various fields. Inspired by multidisciplinary invention in this direction, a fuid mechanical model is proposed to study the Magneto-hydrodynamics （MHD） and heat transfer for nanofluids fabricated by the dispersion of nanoparticles in water as base fluid. The steady flow is induced by metachronal wave propulsion due to beating cilia. The flow regime is asymmetric channel. The flow is restricted under the low Reynolds number and long wavelength approximations. Cilia boundary conditions for velocity components are employed to find the exact solutions. The impacts of pertinent physical parameters on temperature profile, velocity profile, pressure, and stream lines are computed numerically. It is observed that velocity is inversely proportional to magnetic Reynolds number, Reynolds number, Strommer＇s number and velocity is directly proportional to flow rate. It is analyzed that temperature is inversely proportional to Strommer＇s number and magnetic Reynolds number and directly proportional to Brinkmann number and flow rate. The temperature is maximum at the center of the channel and it starts decreasing towards the boundary walls.

Dynamical system of a SEIQV epidemic model with nonlinear generalized incidence rate arising in biology

In this paper, a dynamical system of a SEIQV mathematical model with nonlinear generalized incidence arising in biology is investigated. The stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium is discussed. The basic reproduction number of the model is obtained. We found that the disease-free and endemic equilibrium is stable locally as well as globally asymptotically stable. For R0〈1, the disease-free equilibrium is stable both locally and globally and for R0〉1, the endemic equilibrium is stable globally asymptotically. Finally, some numerical results are presented.

Quantum dot cellular automata(QCA)is promising nanotechnology due to the three main advantages:faster speed,nanoscale size,and ultrasmall power *** paper proposed a simple data path selector cum router as the‘multiplexerchannel-demultiplexer’unit using QCA,an unavoidable building block of nano communication.A Simple 2×2 block and the extended 4×4 block of data path selectors have been proposed in this *** layouts of the proposed designs have been verified in QCADesigner,and the energy dissipation has been evaluated using two tools,QCAPro and QCQDesigner-E(QDE).The suggested designs reached a significant improvement in cell complexity(cell count)and covered area over the existing *** precise,the proposed 2×2(4×4)block shows 86%(63%)lower cell complexity and 87%(37%)smaller area than the prior reported similar *** addition,the currently reported 2×2(4×4)unit has 86%(60%)lower QDE based energy dissipation compared with prior reported designs.

Conservation status evaluation of Berberis species across the Karakoram Mountain Ranges, Pakistan using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria

Berberis species medicinal plants in Pakistan are endangered, high-value with important eco-cultural, commercial and livelihood roles in mountain communities. To assess the geographical distribution of Berberis species across the Karakoram Mountain Ranges in Pakistan, we used IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria （2001） to calculate the extent of occurrence （EOO, 〈100 km^2） and the area of occupancy （AOO, 〈10 km^2） of Berberis pseudumbellata subsp, pseudumbellata and B. pseudumbellata subsp. gilgitica. Overgrazing and habitat loss were key population- limiting factors. The two subspecies had contrasting responses to temperature, elevation, precipitation and insect susceptibility. B. pseudumbellata subsp, gilgitica is endemic to Gilgit-Baltistan and grows in single-cropping zone （ar- eas 〉 200 m a.s.1.）. Status evaluation revealed that both subspecies meet the criteria set for critically endangered species. Prolonged disregard of its declining population trend might lead to its extinction; therefore, integrated con- servation efforts are necessary.

Climate change impacts on crop yield,crop water productivity and food security-A review

This paper provides a comprehensive review of literature related to the assessment of climate change impacts on crop productivity using climate,water and crop yield *** existing studies present that climate change models with higher spatial resolution can be a way forward for future climate ***,stochastic projections of more than one climate model are necessary for providing insights into model uncertainties as well as to develop risk management *** is projected that water availability will increase in some parts of the world,which will have its own effect on water use efficiency and water *** production can increase if irrigated areas are expanded or irrigation is intensified,but these may increase the rate of environmental degradation. Since climate change impacts on soil water balance will lead to changes of soil evaporation and plant transpiration,consequently,the crop growth period may shorten in the future impacting on water *** yields affected by climate change are projected to be different in various areas,in some areas crop yields will increase,and for other areas it will decrease depending on the latitude of the area and irrigation *** modelling results show that an increase in precipitation will increase crop yield,and what is more,crop yield is more sensitive to the precipitation than *** water availability is reduced in the future,soils of high water holding capacity will be better to reduce the impact of drought while maintaining crop *** the temperature increasing and precipitation fluctuations,water availability and crop production are likely to decrease in the *** the irrigated areas are expanded,the total crop production will increase;however,food and environmental quality may degrade.

Decoherence Effects on Multiplayer Cooperative Quantum Games

We study the behavior of cooperative multiplayer quantum games [Q. Chen, Y. Wang, J.T. Liu, and K.L. Wang, Phys. Lett. A 327 （2004） 98; A.P. Flitney and L.C.L. Hollenberg, Quantum Inf. Comput. 7 （2007） 111] in the presence of decoherence using different quantum channels such as amplitude damping, depolarizing and phase damping. It is seen that the outcomes of the games for the two damping channels with maximum values of decoherence reduce to same value. However, in comparison to phase damping channel, the payoffs of cooperators are strongly damped under the influence amplitude damping channel for the lower values of decoherence parameter. In the case of depolarizing channel, the game is a no-payoff game irrespective of the degree of entanglement in the initial state for the larger values of decoherence parameter. The deeoherenee gets the cooperators worse off.

One of the most significant considerations in the design of a heat sink is thermal management due to increasing thermal flux and miniature in *** heat sinks utilize plate or pin fins depending upon the required heat dissipation *** are designed to optimize overall *** pin fin heat sinks enhance heat transfer rates and reduce the pumping *** this study,the Firefly Algorithm is implemented to optimize heat sinks with elliptical *** pin-fins are arranged in an inline *** nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm performs powerfully and efficiently in solving numerical global optimization *** on mass,energy,and entropy balance,three models are developed for thermal resistance,hydraulic resistance,and entropy generation rate in the heat *** major axis is used as the characteristic length,and the maximum velocity is used as the reference *** entropy generation rate comprises the combined effect of thermal resistance and pressure *** total EGR is minimized by utilizing the firefly *** optimization model utilizes analytical/empirical correlations for the heat transfer coefficients and friction *** is shown that both thermal resistance and pressure drop can be simultaneously optimized using this *** is demonstrated that the performance of FFA is much better than PPA.
