In this study the mechanical and erosion wear behavior of bamboo fiber reinforce epoxy composites filled with Cement By-Pass Dust (CBPD) were studied. The effect of CBPD content and alkalization on the various properties of these composites was also investigated. Taguchi’s orthogonal arrays are used for analysis of experiential results. It identifies significant control factors influencing the erosion wear and also outlines significant interaction effects. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test has also been performed on the measured data to find the most significant factors affecting erosion rate. Finally, eroded surfaces of both untreated and alkali treated bamboo fiber reinforced composites were characterized using SEM.

Polypyrrole (Ppy) was synthesized using Ammonium Peroxy Disulfate (APS) as oxidant in a standard ratio of monomer to oxidants at 5℃. Attempts were made to increase the electrical conductivity by using various dopants viz. Lithium per Chlorate (LiClO4), para-Toluene Sulfonate (p-TS) and Napthalene Sulfonic acid (NSA). The materials were characterized using FTIR, X Ray diffraction and SEM. The electrical conductivity was measured by two probe method and was found to be in the range of 10-3 S/cm. Thin films of these preparations were casted on the interdigited electrodes to study the detection of gas such as ammonia. It was found that for the pure Ppy when ammonia gas was allowed to flow in, there was a sudden increase in the current, which decreased rapidly when gas was stopped. However when Ppy doped with p-TS, NSA and LiClO4, the trend was reversed.

The present paper studies water absorption behavior and its consequence on mechanical properties of untreated and chemically treated Sansevieria /carbon fiber reinforced hybrid epoxy (Sria/CF-Ep) composite with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoparticles. Sansevieria /carbon fiber (30/5 wt%) reinforced hybrid epoxy composite with 1.5, 3 and 4.5 wt% of CaCO3 have been developed by hand lay-up method followed by heat press. The water absorption characteristics of the Sria fibers were obtained by immersing the composite samples in sea water at room temperature, until reaching their water content saturation level. The dry and water-immersed hybrid composite samples were subjected to hardness, interlaminar shear, tensile, flexural, and impact tests. The water absorption development of hybrid composites was found to follow Fickian diffusion behavior. Diffusion coefficients and maximum water uptake results were evaluated;the outcome showed that both increased with an increase in filler loading to study the consequence of water penetration in the fiber/matrix interface. The study shows that the mechanical and water-resistant properties of the Sria were improved through chemical treatment and hybridization. Nevertheless, as a result of water penetrating the fiber/matrix interface, longer water-immersion times reduced the tensile and flexural strength of the composites.

Recently, businessmen as well as industrialists are very much concerned about the theory of firm in order to make correct decisions regarding what items, how much and how to produce them. All these decisions are directly related with the cost considerations and market situations where the firm is to be operated. In this regard, this paper should be helpful in suggesting the most suitable functional form of production process for the major manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. This paper considers Cobb-Douglas (C-D) production function with additive error and multiplicative error term. The main purpose of this paper is to select the appropriate Cobb-Douglas production model for measuring the production process of some selected manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. We use different model selection criteria to compare the Cobb-Douglas production function with additive error term to Cobb-Douglas production function with multiplicative error term. Finally, we estimate the parameters of the production function by using optimization subroutine.

A series of 8-substituted alkyl xanthines were evaluated in vitro to test the cytotoxocity in cells. For this experiment, we utilized different mammalian cancer cell lines primarily representing prostrate and lung. One of the compounds synthesized, viz. 8-tertbutyl caffeine showed potent anticancer activity at low concentrations against DU145 when compared to adriamycin. Further experiments were carried out to check the cell cycle arrest in the DU145 cells treated with adriamycin, caffeine and 8-tert butyl caffeine. We observed that there was an arrest in G1 phase of cell cycle at 24 hours while at 48 hours of incubation, the cells were constantly distributed (59.71% -70.79%). We conclude that the effect of 8-tertbutyl caffeine is relatively comparable to caffeine whereas in adriamycin treated cells, we observed the cells underwent G2 arrest. We evaluate the studies on these effects by showing potent analogues which could be used as promising anticancer agents.

Objective Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts(MLC,MIM# 604004) is an autosomal recessively inherited disease resulting from a deficiency of MLC1 *** study was to identify MLC1 mutations and perform their functional studies in Chinese patients with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts(MLC).Methods The analysis of clinical features and MLC1 mutation screening were performed in 13 Chinese *** functional study of MLC1 variants was carried out by western blot,real-time PCR and confocal microscope.U373MG cells transfected by ***3.1-HA-MLCl wildtype and mutants were immunoassayed with antibodies of HA and calnexin,an ER *** A total of 10 MLC1 mutations were identified in these patients,including five novel missense mutations(c.65G>A,p.R22Q;c.95C>T,p.A32V;c.218G>A, p.G73E;c.823G>A,p.A275T;c.832T>C,p.Y278H),one novel splicing mutation(c.772-lG>C in IVS9-1),one novel small deletion(c.90730del,p.V30331 Odel),one known nonsense mutation(c.593delCTCA,p.Y198X) and two known missense mutations(c.206C>T,p.S69L;c.353C>T,p.T118M).Compared with the protein expression in WT,the protein expression in mutants A32V,G73E,S69L,T118M,Y198X,A275T and C278R were reduced in different level(all Pkely disrupt MLC1 protein and mRNA expression and *** would be the first report about MLC1 mutations in patients with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts in China.

AIM: To assess the prevalence of hepatitis B virus(HBV) and hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and association with drug induced liver injury(DILI) in patients undergoing anti-tuberculosis(TB) ***: Four hundred and twenty nine patients with newly diagnosed TB- either active disease or latent infection- who were due to commence antiTB therapy between September 2008 and May 2011 were included. These patients were prospectively tested for serological markers of HBV, HCV and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infections- hepatitis B core antigen(HBc Ag), hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag), hepatitis B e antigen, Ig G and Ig M antibody to HBc Ag(anti-HBc), HCV Ig G antibody and HIV antibody using a combination of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blot assay and polymerase chain reaction techniques. Patients were reviewed at least monthly during the TB treatment initiation phase. Liver function tests were measured prior to commencement of antiTB therapy and 2-4 wk later. Liver function tests were also performed at any time the patient had significant nausea, vomiting, rash, or felt non-specifically unwell. Fisher's exact test was used to measure significance in comparisons of proportions between groups. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically ***: Of the 429 patients, 270(62.9%) had active TB disease and 159(37.1%) had latent TB infection. 61(14.2%) patients had isolated anti-HBc positivity, 11(2.6%) were also HBs Ag positive and 7(1.6%) were HCV-antibody positive. 16/270 patients with active TB disease compared to 2/159 patients with latent TB infection had markers of chronic viral hepatitis(HBs Ag or HCV antibody positive; P = 0.023). Similarly the proportion of HBs Ag positive patients were significantly greater in the active vs latent TB infection group(10/43 vs 1/29, P = 0.04).
