Fortification of apple slices with t-resveratrol glucoside was obtained by vacuum impregnation (VI) of apple slices with a solution containing grape juice using response surface methodology (RSM). Three independent variables of the VI process: vacuum pressure, application time and relaxation time, were coded at five levels in a central composite design. The VI-treated and dried apple slices were analyzed for t-resveratrol glucoside concentration and textural attributes (gradient and linear distance). Multiple response optimization revealed the following optimum VI condi-tions for the bioactive enrichment and improved textural quality of dried apple slices: vacuum pressure of 6 in. of Hg, application time of 10 min, and relaxation time of 22.5 min.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)have been used as flame retardants in various building materials,plastic and other polymers,airplanes,electronics,*** or some of their congeners have been already banned in many countries,due to their persistency and adverse health *** this study,we are focusing on e-wastes as a source of emission of PBDEs in ambient air during reclamation *** ambient air particulate matter(PM)samples were collected at and near an e-waste reclamation site in Bangkok,*** showed the presence of various homologues,viz:tri-,tetra-,penta-,hexa-,and hepta-PBDEs in both PM2.5 and total suspended particle(TSP)*** comparison of samples as a function of distance from the reclamation site indicated elevated levels of PBDEs in close proximity to the e-waste ***,a shift in the congener pattern was observed with lower brominated PBDEs being more prevalent in nearby off-site samples as compared to the PM collected at the e-waste *** total penta-PBDEs concentration is almost double in the e-waste site PM2.5 compared to the control site *** TSP,tetra,penta,and hepta-PBDEs congeners are at higher concentrations at the e-waste sites and its vicinity compared to reference ***,a clear trend can be observed indicating a debromination of PBDEs to more toxic tri and tetra congeners during the reclamation process and PBDEs are being translocated from treated materials to ambient air *** 30 is uniquely detected in our studies as a dominant final debromination product,that can be used as a marker of thermal e-waste *** work indicates potential hazards related to the reclamation of e-wastes and remediation of sites containing *** particular,thermal treatment methods can lead to congener transformation and increased emissions of more toxic lower brominated congeners.

Ocular Manifestations in HIV Positive and AIDS Patients in Nepal

Background: HIV has the capability to affect every organ system in the body. Ocular manifestations have been reported in up to 70% of individuals infected with HIV and the ocular manifestations reflect systemic disease and may be the first sign of disseminated infection. Aim: To identify different types of ocular involvement in the cases known to be infected with HIV. Methods: A cross sectional, descriptive study was undertaken during the period between January 2005 and July 2006. All the diagnosed cases of HIV infected individuals either coming to the hospital or collected from rehabilitation centres were included in the study. Results: 103 HIV infected cases were examined;of which 45 cases (43.6%) were AIDS cases. The mean age of presentation was 29.6 ± 9.8 years. The commonest systemic disease was pulmonary tuberculosis (65.9%). In the study group, 38.8% of the cases had ocular involvement. In the ocular findings, posterior segment lesions (32%) were most common. Ocular involvement among asymptomatic patient was 22.7% while it was 91.6% among symptomatic patients. HIV retinopathy (23.3%) was the most common HIV-associated ophthalmic lesions. Ocular involvement was the most common in cases that contracted the disease through sexual contact. A negative correlation was observed between CD4 level and ocular involvement. Conclusion: There needs to be awareness of ocular involvement among HIV infected individuals and an increased emphasis on regular ophthalmic examination in all HIV patients. Routine referral system for ocular evaluation from other medical departments seems mandatory for timely diagnosis of the vision threatening conditions.

The recent technological advancement has proved to be tremendously helpful for medical consultants. However, this advancement has also generated an enormous volume and variety of data, with a high velocity causing an information load for the medical consultants. Information overload can be defined as a difficulty a person can have in comprehending issue and making judgments that are caused by the presence of too much information. Information overload occurs when the amount of input to a system surpasses its processing capability. Decision-makers have a limited cognitive processing ability. Consequently, when information overload happens, it is possible that a decline in decision quality will take place. Decision-makers, such as medical consultants, have fairly limited cognitive processing capacity. Consequently, when information overload occurs, it is likely that a reduction in decision quality will occur. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of information overload on medical consultants’ life, its causes, and potential ways to deal with it. We performed a literature review to find the effects of information overload on medical consultants. Twelve research papers were considered for thematic analysis using NVivo 10 tool. These papers revealed four themes: 1) traditional methods of data collection;2) modern ways of data collection;3) consequences of modern ways of data collection;and 4) the need for handling information overload. This study suggests the development of a Continuing Professional Development course that explains how to deal with information overload, and availing the same through E-Learning mode might be one immediate solution.

探索采用小波分析方法研究船舶在波浪中非线性摇摆运动的动力学特性.对在几种不同的典型波浪参数情况下,得到的船舶在波浪中非线性摇摆的响应,进行小波变换.利用小波变换所特有的时频窗,可以同时在时域和频域中研究船舶横摇响应的模图和相图.通过分析所得模图和相图的典型特征,得到舰船非线性横摇幅值和频率等动力学特性.且小波变换适应不同频率的窗口特性具有更好的分辨率,可以获得更多的横摇运动响应特性信息.研究表明,小波分析在非线性横摇运动动力学特性分析的研究中是可行的,可以加强对船舶横摇非线性复杂动力学特性的分析能力.

Factors associated with incomplete small bowel capsule endoscopy studies

AIM:To identify patient risk factors associated with incomplete small bowel capsule endoscopy(CE) ***:Data from all CE procedures performed at ***'s Hospital in Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada,between December 2001 and June 2008 were collected and analyzed on a retrospective *** collection for complete and incomplete CE study groups included patient demographics as well as a number of potential risk factors for incomplete CE including indication for the procedure,hospitalization,diabetes mellitus with or without end organ damage,limitations in mobility,renal insufficiency,past history of bowel obstruction,abdominal surgery,abdominal radiation therapy and opiate *** factors were analyzed using a univariable and multivariable logistic regression ***:From a total of 535 CE procedures performed,158 were incomplete(29.5%).The univariable analysis showed that CE procedures performed for overt gastrointestinal bleeding(P = 0.002),and for patients with a prior history of abdominal surgery(P = 0.023) or bowel obstruction(P = 0.023) were significantly associated with incomplete CE *** on opiate medications(P = 0.094) as well as hospitalized patients(P = 0.054) were not statistically significant,but did show a trend towards incomplete *** multivariable analysis showed that independent risk factors for an incomplete CE procedure include prior history of bowel obstruction [odds ratios(OR) 2.77,P = 0.02,95% confidence intervals(CI):1.17-6.56] and procedures performed for gastrointestinal bleeding(Occult OR 2.04,P = 0.037,95% CI:1.04-4.02 and Overt OR 2.69,P = 0.002,95% CI:1.44-5.05).Patients with a prior history of abdominal surgery(OR 1.46,P = 0.068,95% CI:0.97-2.19),those taking opiate medications(OR 1.54,P = 0.15,95% CI:0.86-2.76) and hospitalized patients(OR 1.82,P = 0.124,95% CI:0.85-3.93) showed a trend towards statistical ***:We have identified a number of risk factors for incomplete CE procedures

Document Clustering Using Semantic Cliques Aggregation

The search engines are indispensable tools to find information amidst massive web pages and documents. A good search engine needs to retrieve information not only in a shorter time, but also relevant to the users’ queries. Most search engines provide short time retrieval to user queries;however, they provide a little guarantee of precision even to the highly detailed users’ queries. In such cases, documents clustering centered on the subject and contents might improve search results. This paper presents a novel method of document clustering, which uses semantic clique. First, we extracted the Features from the documents. Later, the associations between frequently co-occurring terms were defined, which were called as semantic cliques. Each connected component in the semantic clique represented a theme. The documents clustered based on the theme, for which we designed an aggregation algorithm. We evaluated the aggregation algorithm effectiveness using four kinds of datasets. The result showed that the semantic clique based document clustering algorithm performed significantly better than traditional clustering algorithms such as Principal Direction Divisive Partitioning (PDDP), k-means, Auto-Class, and Hierarchical Clustering (HAC). We found that the Semantic Clique Aggregation is a potential model to represent association rules in text and could be immensely useful for automatic document clustering.

Chromatographic Fraction of Polygonum hydropiper Root Modulates the Expression of Transforming Growth Factor-βI (TGF-βI) in Rat Uterus during Days 2-6 of Gestation

Objective To examine the effect of the root extract on the growth factor during early pregnancy from day 2 to day 6 of gestation. Methods A purified form of root extract of Polygonum hydropiper was obtained by Thin Layer Chromatography （TLC）. Localization of transforming growth factor （TGF）- β1 was studied by immunohistochemistry and the expression of the mRNA of TGF- β1 was studied by Reverse transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction （RT-PCR） in uterine tissue from day 2 to day 6 of gestation. Results The TLC fraction treated in a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight per day showed decreased the number of implantation sites. The expression of TGF- β1 from day 2 to day 6 of gestation was altered by the TLCfraction and suppression of the mRNA transcript of the TGF- β1 on day 6 of gestation during implantation. Conclusion The root extract of Polygonum hydropiper in a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight per day decreased the expression of TGF- β1 in the implantation sites of rat uterus.
