AIM： To investigate the chemopreventive efficacy of the Indian medicinal plant Acanthus ilicifolius L Acanthaceae in a transplantab.e Ehrlich ascites carcinoma （EAC）- b.aring murine model.METHODS： Male Swiss alb.no mice were divided into four groups： Group A was the untreated normal control; Group b.was the EAC control mice group that received serial, intraperitoneal （ip） inoculations of rapidly proliferating 2 × 10^5 viab.e EAC cells in 0.2 mL of sterile phosphate b.ffered saline; Group C was the plant extract-treated group that received the aqueous leaf extract （ALE） of the plant at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg b.dy weight b. single ip injections, once daily for 10, 20 and 30 consecutive days following tumour inoculation （ALE control）; and Group D was the EAC ＋ ALE- treatment group. The chemopreventive potential of the ALE was evaluated in a murine model b. studying various b.ological parameters and genotoxic markers, such as tumour cell count, mean survival of the animals, haematological indices, hepatocellular histology, immunohistochemical expression of liver metallothionein （MT） protein, sister-chromatid exchanges （SCEs）, and DNA alterations.RESULTS： Treatment of the EAC-b.aring mice with the ALE significantly （P 〈 0.001） reduced viab.e tumour cell count b. 68.34% （228.7 × 10^6 ± 0.53） when compared to EAC control mice （72.4 × 10^6 ± 0.49）, and restored b.dy and organ weights almost to the normal values. ALE administration also increased （P 〈 0.001） mean survival of the hosts from 35 ± 3.46 d in EAC control mice to 83 ± 2.69 d in EAC ＋ ALE-treated mice. Haematological indices also showed marked improvement with administration of ALE in EAC-b.aring animals. There was a significant increase in Rb. count （P 〈 0.001）, hemoglob.n percent （P 〈 0.001）, and haematocrit value （P 〈 0.001） from 4.3 ± 0.12, 6.4 ± 0.93, and 17.63 ± 0.72 respectively in EAC control mice to 7.1 ± 0.13, 12.1 ± 0.77, and 30.23 ± 0.57 respectively in EAC ＋ ALE-treated group, along with concurrent de

Two dissimilar magnesium(Mg)alloy sheets,one with low aluminium(AZ31)and another with high aluminium(AZ91)content,were successfully joined b. friction stir welding(FSW).The effect of process parameters on the formation of hot cracks was investigated.A sound metallurgical joint was ob.ained at optimized process parameters(1400 rpm with 25 mm/min feed)which contained fine grains and distrib.ted β(Mg_(17)Al_(12))phase within the nugget *** increasing trend in the hardness measurements has also confirmed more amount of dissolution of aluminium within the nugget zone.A sharp interface b.tween nugget zone and thermo mechanical affected zone(TMAZ)was clearly noticed at the AZ31 Mg alloy side(advancing)b.t not on the AZ91 Mg alloy side(retreating).From the results it can b. concluded that FSW can b. effectively used to join dissimilar metals,particularly difficult to process metals such as Mg alloys,and hot cracking can b. completely eliminated b. choosing appropriate process parameters to achieve sound joint.

Arab.dopsis cryptochrome 2 （CRY2） is a b.ue light receptor that mediates light inhib.tion of hypocotyl elongation and long-day promotion of floral initiation, CRY2 is known to undergo b.ue light-dependent phosphorylation, which is b.lieved to serve regulatory roles in the function of CRY2. We report here on a b.ochemical and genetics study of CRY2 phosphorylation. Using mass spectrometry analysis, we identified three serine residues in the CCE domain of CRY2 （S588, S599, and S605） that undergo b.ue light-dependent phosphorylation in Arab.dopsis seedlings. A study of serine-sub.titution mutations in the CCE domain of CRY2 demonstrates that CRY2 contains two types of phosphorylation in the CCE domain, one in the serine cluster that causes electrophoretic mob.lity upshift and the other outside the serine cluster that does not seem to cause mob.lity upshift. We showed that mutations in the serine residues within and outside the serine cluster diminished b.ue light-dependent CRY2 phosphorylation, degradation, and physiological activities. These results support the hypothesis that b.ue light-dependent phosphorylation of the CCE domain determines the photosensitivity of Arab.dopsis CRY2.

Optimization and modeling of coagulation-flocculation to remove algae and organic matter from surface water b. response surface methodology

Seasonal algal b.ooms of Lake Yangcheng highlight the necessity to develop an effective and optimal water treatment process to enhance the removal of algae and dissolved organic matter (DOM). In the present study, the coagulation performance for the removal of algae, turb.dity, dissolved organic carb.n (DOC) and ultraviolet ab.orb.nce at 254 nm (UV254) was investigated systematically b. central composite design (CCD) using response surface methodology (RSM). The regression models were developed to illustrate the relationships b.tween coagulation performance and experimental variab.es. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to test the significance of the response surface models. It can b. concluded that the major mechanisms of coagulation to remove algae and DOM were charge neutralization and sweep flocculation at a pH range of 4.66–6.34. The optimal coagulation conditions with coagulant dosage of 7.57 mg Al/L, pH of 5.42 and initial algal cell density of 3.83 × 106 cell/mL led to removal of 96.76%, 97.64%, 40.23% and 30.12% in term of cell density, turb.dity, DOC and UV254 ab.orb.nce, respectively, which were in good agreement with the validation experimental results. A comparison b.tween the modeling results derived through b.th ANOVA and artificial neural networks (ANN) b.sed on experimental data showed a high correlation coefficient, which indicated that the models were significant and fitted well with experimental results. The results proposed a valuab.e reference for the treatment of algae-laden surface water in practical application b. the optimal coagulation-flocculation process.

The Ohmically heated circular limiter tokamak ADITYA （R0 = 75 cm, a = 25 cm） has b.en upgraded to a tokamak named the ADITYA Upgrade （ADITYA-U） with an open divertor configuration with divertor plates. The main goal of ADITYA-U is to carry out dedicated experiments relevant for b.gger fusion machines including ITER, such as the generation and control of runaway electrons, disruption prediction, and mitigation studies, along with an improvement in confinement with shaped plasma. The ADITYA tokamak was dismantled and the assemb.y of ADITYA-U was completed in March 2016. Integration of sub.ystems like data acquisition and remote operation along with plasma production and preliminary plasma characterization of ADITYA-U plasmas are presented in this paper.

Convective Effects on MHD Flow and Heat Transfer b.tween Vertical Plates Moving in Opposite Direction and Partially Filled with a Porous Medium

The present paper, a theoretical analysis of steady fully developed flow and heat transfer of two immiscib.e magneto hydrodynamic and viscous fluid, partially filled with porous matrix and partially with clear fluid b.unded b. two vertical plates, has b.en discussed, when b.th the plates are moving in opposite directions. The plates are maintained at unequal temperatures. The b.ink-man-extended Darcy model has describ.d the momentum transfer in a porous medium. The effect of various parameters and Darcy numb.r are discussed in the flow field and the temperature profiles numerically and are expressed b. graphs. The non-dimensional governing momentum and energy equations are analytically solved b. applying the homotopy perturb.tion technique and the method of ordinary differential equation. It is ob.erved that magnetic parameter (M) has a retarding effect on the main flow velocity and is to enhance the temperature distrib.tion, whereas the reversal phenomenon occurs for the Darcy dissipation parameter (Da). The skin-friction component has also b.en determined and is presented with the help of a tab.e. The magnetic parameter (M) reduces the skin friction coefficient for clear fluid region and is to increase the skin friction coefficient for porous region. It is also evident from tab.e that getting b.gger the width of the clear fluid layer increases the skin friction. The skin friction coefficient on b.th the plates (comparing at y = 0 and at y = 1 for A or b. increases when those are heated.

Use of Electronic gadgets such as mob.le phones, computers/laptops constitutes an integral part of human day-to-day activity in offices and b.sinesses. Therefore, their use cannot b. stopped. These electronic gadgets emit electromagnetic radiations, which are b.lieved to b. hazardous to human health. World Health Organization/International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possib.y carcinogenic to humans (Group b.. The Enviro Chip developed b. Synergy Environics, India, is a radiation harmonizing chip which when fixed on electronic gadgets at specific locations claims to reduce stress level b. reducing the pulse rate of users which may also result in improvement of other health parameters. In this study, we have tested the ab.lity of the Enviro Chip to reduce pulse rate of people who may have developed high pulse rate due to prolonged use of electronic gadgets. This was the doub.e b.ind crossover study conducted in 205 healthy volunteers having an average pulse rate of ab.ve 82 per Minute at Max Healthcare India. The primary ob.ective of the study was to evaluate and compare the change in pulse rate over 14 measurements with the use of b.th the Enviro Chip and a Dummy chip from average pulse rate at b.seline without the Placeb. effect. The secondary ob.ective was to evaluate the change in pulse rate gender-wise. Data analysis was done using Wilcoxon Sign Rank test. The study demonstrated statistical significant reduction in pulse rate over 14 measurements with the use of Enviro Chip in b.th male and female healthy volunteers

Glycemic Indices of Multiple Oral Nutritional Supplements: A Randomized Cross-Over Study in Indian Adults

b.ckground: A randomized cross-over study was conducted to assess the glycemic index (GI) of seven Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONSs). These ONSs are designed to support the nutritional requirements of different age-groups, physiological states, or health conditions among Indian adults. Methods: The study had two phases viz., phase1 (n = 18) studied two ONSs: A1 and b. and phase 2 (n = 20) studied five ONSs: A2, b., C2, D2 & E2. The sub.ects were healthy, non-diab.tic adults, aged b.tween 20 - 44 years with a mean b.dy Mass Index of 21.2 ± 1.52 kg/m2 (Phase 1) and 21.0 ± 1.45 kg/m2 (Phase 2). All these ONSs were compared with reference drinks (glucose). The carb.hydrates in one serving of each ONS were matched to carb.hydrates from 25 grams of glucose following ISO 2010 guidelines. Capillary b.ood was assessed for b.ood glucose response at b.seline, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. GI was calculated as the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) for the test drinks and expressed as a percentage of the average iAUC from glucose. Results: Phase 1 indicated that the high fib.r diab.tes-specific nutrition supplement A1 with higher protein (23% energy), higher fat (25% energy) and reduced carb.hydrates (40% energy) had a significantly (p = 0.002) lower GI [34 (±6)] as compared to b. [63 (±7)] (protein 19%, fat 7% and carb.hydrates 60% energy) even with similar amount (22%) and type of fib.r. Phase 2 reported that all test products [A2 (32 ± 5), b. (37 ± 4), C2 (31 ± 5), D2 (31 ± 5) and E2 (55 ± 4)] had a low GI. As compared to phase 1, ONSs in phase 2 had lower fib.r content (1.6% - 4.6% energy). Conclusion: The glycemic index of oral nutrition supplements is influenced not only b. their fib.r content, b.t also b. the overall macronutrient composition including protein (≥17% energy), fat (≥10% - 27% energy) and carb.hydrates (40% - 57.5% energy).

b.CKGROUND: In a multidisciplinary conference patients with advanced non-resectab.e hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were stratified according to their clinical status and tumor extent to different regional modalities or to b.st supportive care. The present study evaluated all patients who were stratified to repeated transarterial chemoemb.lization (TACE) from 1999 until 2003 in terms of tumor response, toxicity, and survival. A moderate emb.lizing approach was chosen using a comb.nation of degradab.e starch microspheres (DSM) and iodized oil (Lipiodol) in order to comb.ne anti-tumoral efficiency and low toxicity. METHODS: Fourty-seven patients were followed up prospectively. TACE treatment consisted of cisplatin (50 mg/m2), doxorub.cin (50 mg/m2), 450-900 mg DSM, and 5-30 ml Lipiodol. DSM and Lipiodol were administered according to tumor vascularization. Patient characteristics,toxicity, and complications were outlined. In multivariate regression analyses of pre-treatment variab.es from a prospective datab.se, predictors for tumor response and survival after TACE were determined. RESULTS: 112 TACE courses were performed (2.4±1.5 courses per patient). Mean maximum tumor size was 75 (± 43) mm, in 68% there was b.lob.r disease. b.st response to TACE treatment was: progressive disease (PD) 9%, stab.e disease (SD) 55%, partial remission (PR) 36%, and complete remission (CR) 0%. Multivariate regression analyses identified tumor size ≤75 mm, tumor numb.r ≤5, and tumor hypervascularization as predictors for PR. The overall 1-, 2-, and 3-year-survival rates were 75%, 59%, and 41%, respectively, and the median survival was 26 months. Low α-fetoprotein levels (b.st response to TACE (Odds ratio=6.7) were significantly associated with long term survival (>30 months, R2=36%). Grade 3 toxicity occurred in 7.1% (n=8), and grade 4 toxicity in 3.6% (n=4) of all courses in terms of reversib.e leukopenia and thromb.cytopenia. The incidence of major
