AIM: To develop.a multip.ex reverse transcrip.ion p.lymerase chain reaction (RT-p.R) method detecting cir-culating tumor cells in the p.rip.eral blood of colorectal cancer (CRC) p.tients. METHODS: p.rip.eral blood samp.es were collected from 88 CRC p.tients and 40 healthy individuals from the blood donors' clinic and subsequently analyzed by multip.ex RT-RCR for the exp.ession of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin 20 (CK20) and ep.dermal growth factor recep.or (EGFR) mRNA. The analysis involved determining the detection rates of CEA, CK20 and EGFR transcrip.s vs disease stage and overall survival. Median follow-up.p.riod was 19 mo (range 8-28 mo). RESULTS: Rates of CEA, CK20 and EGFR detection in CRC p.tients were 95.5%, 78.4% and 19.3%, resp.ctively. CEA transcrip.s were detected in 3 healthy volunteer samp.es (7.5%), whereas all control samp.es were tested negative for CK20 and EGFR transcrip.s. The increasing number of p.sitive detections for CEA, CK20 and EGFR transcrip.s in each blood samp.e was p.sitively correlated with Astler-Coller disease stage (p. 0.001) and p.eop.rative serum levels of CEA (p.0.029) in CRC p.tients. Data analysis using Kap.an-Meier estimator documented signif icant differences in the overall survival of the different CRC p.tient group. as formed according to the increasing number of p.sitivity for CEA, CK20 and EGFR transcrip.s. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that multip.ex RTp.R assay can p.ovide useful information concerning disease stage and overall survival of CRC p.tients.

The p.esent research studies the knowledge of 221 Ioannina’s city, located in the northwestern region of Greece, high school students on 10 environmental issues. Schoolers’ resp.nses were collected through a “closed resp.nse” questionnaire distributed at three of the city’s p.blic High Schools. The overall p.cture ap.eared to be moderately satisfactory, as high schoolers p.ssess a good knowledge on several environmental issues, while misconcep.ions on other issues, such as sustainable develop.ent, p.edominate. Taking into account the outcome of the p.esent study we consider that imp.ovements are needed in the existing Environmental Education p.ogram in order to ameliorate their knowledge.

BACKGROUND:The frequency and p.ttern of hyp.rbili-rubinemia after op.n-heart surgery and its severe p.riop.rative comp.ications are not well clarified. The p.rp.se of this study was to investigate the incidence and nature of p.stop.rative jaundice in p.tients undergoing cardiac op.ration,to analyze the determinants,and to identify the clinical significance of this comp.ication with regard to the associated morbidity and mortality. METHODS:A p.osp.ctive observational study was made during the p.riod of 2003-2004 in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit of a Cardiac Surgery Center,Athens. One hundred twenty-eight adult p.tients for op.n heart surgery were divided into three group.. Group.A included 50 p.tients who underwent coronary artery byp.ss crafting(CABG),group.B 31 p.tients who were subjected to aortic valve rep.acement(AVR)+CABG and group.C 47 p.tients who underwent mitral valve rep.acement(MVR)+CABG. Aminotransferases,alkaline p.osp.atase,gamma-glutamyl-transp.p.idase and both typ.s of bilirubin were determined at admission,24 hours after the op.ration and thereafter according to clinical evolution. The p.esence of jaundice was associated with elevated serum bilirubin above 3 mg/dl. RESULTS:Hyp.rbilirubinemia develop.d in 34 p.tients(26.5%). The incidence of p.stop.rative jaundice was higher in p.tients who were subjected to MVR+CABG than to CABG and AVR+CABG. Hyp.rbilirubinemia was correlated with p.olonged cardiop.lmonary by-p.sstime(p.0.001),aortic cross-clamp.ng time(p.0.001),the use of intra aortic balloon p.mp.ng(p.0.001),the administration of inotrop. and the number of blood and p.asma transfusions. p.stop.rative jaundice resulted mainly from an increase in conjugated bilirubin. CONCLUSIONS:Although hyp.rbilirubinemia seems to be multifactorial,the typ. of op.ration,the p.eop.rative hep.tic dysfunction due to advanced heart failure(NYHA Ⅱ-Ⅲ) and the decreased hep.tic flow during the op.ration seem to determine the incidence of jaundice.

BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease is associated with immunological disorders,p.esented as p.enotyp.c alterations of T *** changes are exp.cted to be restored after a successful renal transp.antation;however,additional p.rameters may contribute to this *** To evaluate the imp.ct of p.sitive p.nel reactive antibodies(p.As)on the restoration of T cell p.enotyp.,after renal *** CD4CD28null,CD8CD28null,natural killer cells(NKs),and regulatory T cells(Tregs)were estimated by flow cytometry at T0,T3,and T6 which were the time of transp.antation,and 3-and 6-mo follow-up.*** were estimated regarding the p.esence or absence of *** p.tients were classified in two group.:p.A(-)(n=43)and p.A(+)(n=28)*** and their subtyp.s were similar between the two group. at T0,whereas their p.rcentage was increased at T3 in p.A(-)comp.red to p.A(+)[23(10.9-47.9)vs 16.4(7.5-36.8)μ/L,resp.ctively;p.0.03].Lymp.ocyte changes in p.A(-)p.tients included a significant increase in CD4 cells(p.0.0001),CD8 cells(p.0.0001),and Tregs(p.0.0001),and a reduction of NKs(p.0.0001).p.A(+)p.tients showed an increase in CD4(p.0.008)and CD8(p.0.0001),and a reduction in NKs(p.0.07).CD4CD28null and CD8CD28null cells,although initially reduced in both group.,were stabilized *** Our study described imp.rtant differences in the immune resp.nse between p.A(+)and p.A(-)p.tients with changes in lymp.ocytes and lymp.ocyte ***(+)p.tients seemed to have a worse immune p.ofile after 6 mo follow-up.regardless of renal function.

Backgound Red cell distribution width(RDW) and neutrop.il-to-lymp.ocyte ratio(NLR) are simp.e hematologic indices that have been used to p.edict adverse outcomes in different clinical settings. The aim of our study is to determine whether RDW and NLR can p.edict atrial fibrillation(AF) recurrence in p.tients undergoing AF ablation. Methods Consecutive p.tients, without known hematological disorders, who underwent AF catheter ablation between January 2014 and Ap.il 2017 were enrolled into this study. Blood samp.es were taken one day before and five hours after the ablation p.ocedure. Results A total of 346 p.tients(224 males(65%), mean age: 59 ± 11 years old) were included. After a mean follow up.of 26.2 ± 12.1 months, 80(23.1%) p.tients exp.rienced late AF recurrence(defined as any recurrence after the blanking p.riod of three months), while 97(28%) p.tients exp.rienced early AF recurrence during the blanking p.riod. Univariate analysis showed that early arrhythmia recurrence, typ. of AF and NLR after the p.ocedure were significantly associated with late AF recurrence, while early arrhythmia recurrence and NLR remained significant in multivariate analysis. RDW was not associated with late AF recurrence. None of the p.rameters above p.edicted early arrhythmia recurrence. Conclusions Simp.e and inexp.nsive hematological indices such as NLR should be evaluated for their ability to p.edict AF recurrence in p.tients undergoing catheter ablation in larger p.osp.ctive studies.
