Cyclones with strong winds can make the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic a dangerous *** weather forecasts are essential for safe shipping in the Southern Ocean and observational and logistical operations at Antarctic research *** study investigated the impact of additional radiosonde observations from Research Vessel"Shirase"over the Southern Ocean and Dome Fuji Station in Antarctica on reanalysis data and forecast experiments using an ensemble data assimilation system comprising the Atmospheric General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator and the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter Experimental Ensemble Reanalysis,version 2.A 63-member ensemble forecast experiment was conducted focusing on an unusually strong Antarctic cyclonic *** data with(observing system experiment)and without(control)additional radiosonde data were used as initial *** observing system experiment correctly captured the central pressure of the cyclone,which led to the reliable prediction of the strong winds and moisture transport near the ***,the control experiment predicted lower wind speeds because it failed to forecast the central pressure of the cyclone *** were found in cyclone predictions of operational forecast systems with and without assimilation of radiosonde observations from Dome Fuji Station.

Evaluation of refractive correction for standard automated perimetry in eyes wearing multifocal contact lenses

aiM：To evaluate the refractive correction for standard automated perimetry（SAP）in eyes with refractive multifocal contact lenses（CL）in healthy young ***：Twenty-nine eyes of 29 participants were *** was paralyzed in all participants with 1%cyclopentolate *** was performed using the Humphrey SITA-standard 24-2 and 10-2 protocol under three refractive conditions：monofocal CL corrected for near distance（baseline）;multifocal CL corrected for distance（m CL-D）;and m CL-D corrected for near vision using a spectacle lens（m CL-N）.Primary outcome measures were the foveal threshold,mean deviation（MD）,and pattern standard deviation（PSD）.RESULTS：The foveal threshold of m CL-N with both the24-2 and 10-2 protocols significantly decreased by 2.2-2.5 d B（P〈0.001）,while that of m CL-D with the 24-2 protocol significantly decreased by 1.5 d B（P=0.0427）,as compared with that of *** there was no significant difference between the MD of baseline and m CL-D with the24-2 and 10-2 protocols,the MD of m CL-N was significantly decreased by 1.0-1.3 d B（P〈0.001）as compared with that of both baseline and m CL-D,with both 24-2 and 10-2 *** was no significant difference in the PSD among the three refractive conditions with both the 24-2 and 10-2 ***：Despite the induced mydriasis and the optical design of the multifocal lens used in this study,our results indicated that,when the dome-shaped visual field test is performed with eyes with large pupils and wearing refractive multifocal CLs,distance correction without additional near correction is to be recommended.

Particle size distribution and shape control of Au nanoparticles used for particle gun

Au nanoparticles are expected for the media to transfer genes into plants. However, the control of particle size distribution （PSD） and shape of Au nanoparticles is too difficult to design and prepare particles with suitable quality for the gene supporting media. Reduction crystal- lization experiments were performed in aqueous solution in order to clarify the effect of feeding conditions such as feeding profile, feeding rate, and feeding amount on PSD and shape of Au nanopartieles. Ascorbic acid （AsA） was selected as a reducing agent because it is safe for plants. Au particles of 50nm, 50-200nm, and 150-400nm were obtained in batch operation, single-jet, and double-jet, respectively. Moreover, in single-jet and double-jet, the mean size of the obtained Au particles increases with the decrease of feeding rate or the increase of feeding amount. It is concluded that PSD of Au nanoparticles can be controlled in the range of 50-400 nm by changing feeding conditions of AsA and HAuCl4 aqueous solution.

Study on Intermittent Irrigation for Paddy Rice: I. Water Use Efficiency

A field experiment was conducted in a well-puddled paddy field developed on the Tama River alluvial soil in the Farm of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, to study the effect of intermittent irrigation on water use efficiency of paddy rice. Four treatments were arranged with 2 replicates: continuous flooding irrigation treatments (CFI), and three intermittent irrigation treatments Ⅱ-0, Ⅱ-1 and Ⅱ-2, in which plants were re-irrigated when the soil water potential fell below 0, -10, and -20 kPa, respectively, at soil depth of about 5 cm. Water consumption was lower in treatment Ⅱ-0 than in treatment CFI because the percolation rate was reduced by the reduction in the hydraulic head of ponded water. Intermittent irrigation led to soil repeated shrinking and swelling in Ⅱ-1 and Ⅱ-2 plots and, therefore, soil cracks developed rapidly. Since they became the major routes of water percolation, the soil cracks increased water consumption in treatments Ⅱ-1 and Ⅱ-2. There were no significant differences in dry matter production and grain yields between treatment Ⅱ-0 and treatment CFI, but the dry matter production and grain yields in treatments Ⅱ-0 and CFI were significantly higher than those in treatments Ⅱ-1 and Ⅱ-2. Therefore, the water use efficiency in the treatments was in the order of Ⅱ-0 > CFI > Ⅱ- 2 > Ⅱ- 1.

Importance of adequate immunosuppressive therapy for the recovery of patients with "life-threatening" severe exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B

aiM: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) re-activation often occurs spontaneously or after withdrawal of immunosuppressive therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Severe exacerbation, sometimes developing into fulminant hepatic failure, is at high risk of mortality. The efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in 'clinically severe' exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B has not been well demonstrated. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of early introduction of high-dose corticosteroid therapy in patients with life-threatening severe exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: Twenty-two patients, 14 men and 8 women, were defined as 'severe' exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B using uniform criteria and enrolled in this study. Eleven patients were treated with corticosteroids at 60 mg or more daily with or without anti-viral drugs within 10 d after the diagnosis of severe disease ('early high-dose' group) and 11 patients were either treated more than 10 d or untreated with corticosteroids ('non-early high-dose' group). RESULTS: Mean age, male-to-female ratio, mean prothrombin time (FT) activity, alanine transaminase (ALT) level, total bilirubin level, positivity of HBeAg, mean IgM-HBc titer, and mean HBV DNA polymerase activity did not differ between the two groups. Ten of 11 patients of the 'early high-dose' group survived, while only 2 of 11 patients of the 'non-early high-dose' group survived (P<0.001). During the first 2 wk after the introduction of corticosteroids, improvements in PT activities and total bilirubin levels were observed in the 'early high-dose' group. Both ALT levels and HBV DNA polymerase levels fell in both groups. CONCLUSION: The introduction of high-dose corticosteroid can reverse deterioration in patients with 'clinically life-threatening' severe exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B , when used in the early stage of illness.

aiM：To compare the corneal biomechanical properties difference by ocular response analyzer（ORA） in normal tension glaucoma（NTG） patients with different visual field（VF） progression speed. METHODS：NTG patients with well-controlled Goldmann applanation tonometer（GAT） who routinely consulted Kitasato University Hospital Glaucoma Department between January 2010 and February 2014 were *** and ORA parameters including corneal compensated intraocular pressure（lOPcc）,Goldmann estimated intraocular pressure（lOPg）,corneal hysteresis（CH）,corneal resistance factor（CRF） were *** was tested by Swedish interactive threshold algorithm（SITA）-standard 30-2 *** patients underwent VF measurement regularly and GAT did not exceed 15 mm Hg at any time during the 3y follow *** were divided into four groups according to VF change over 3y,and ORA findings were compared between the upper 25th percentile group（slow progression group） and the lower 25th percentile group（rapid progression group）.RESULTS：Eighty-two eyes of 56 patients were *** were 21 eyes（21 patients） each in rapid and slow progression groups ***,lOPcc,lOPg,CH,CRF were 12.1＋1.4 mm Hg,15.8±1.8 mm Hg,12.8±2.0 mm Hg,8.4±1.1 mm Hg,7.9±1.3 mm Hg respectively in rapid progression group and 11.5±1.3 mm Hg,13.5±2.1 mm Hg,11.2±1.6 mm Hg,9.3±1.1 mm Hg,8.2±0.9 mm Hg respectively in slow progression group（P=0.214,〈0.001,0.007,0.017,0.413,respectively）.In bivariate correlation analysis,lOPcc,lOPcc-GAT and CH were significant correlated with m△MD（r =-0.292,-0.312,0.228 respectively,P =0.008,0.004,0.039 respectively）.CONCLUSION：Relatively rapid VF progression occurred in NTG patients whose lOPcc are rather high,CH are rather low and the difference between lOPcc and GAT are relatively *** lOPcc and lower CH are associated with VF progression in NTG *** study suggests that GAT measures might underestimate the IOP in such patients.

Postoperative bleeding in patients on antithrombotic therapy after gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection

To investigated the relationship between postoperative bleeding following gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and individual antithrombotic agents. METHODSA total of 2488 gastric neoplasms in 2148 consecutive patients treated between May 2001 and June 2016 were studied. The antithrombotic agents were categorized into antiplatelet agents, anticoagulants, and other antithrombotic agents, and we included combination therapies [e.g., dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)]. The risk factors associated with post-ESD bleeding, namely, antithrombotic agents overall, individual antithrombotic agents, withdrawal or continuation of antithrombotic agents, and bleeding onset period (during the first six days or thereafter), were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTSThe en bloc resection and complete curative resection rates were 99.2% and 91.9%, respectively. Postoperative bleeding occurred in 5.1% cases. Bleeding occurred in 10.3% of the patients administered antithrombotic agents. Being male (P = 0.007), specimen size (P < 0.001), and antithrombotic agent used (P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for postoperative bleeding. Heparin bridging therapy (HBT) (P = 0.002) and DAPT/multidrug combinations (P < 0.001) were independent risk factors associated with postoperative bleeding. The bleeding rate of the antithrombotic agent continuation group was significantly higher than that of the withdrawal group (P < 0.01). Bleeding within postoperative day (POD) 6 was significantly higher in warfarin (P = 0.015), and bleeding after POD 7 was significantly higher in DAPT/multidrug combinations (P = 0.007). No thromboembolic events were reported. CONCLUSIONWe must closely monitor patients administered HBT and DAPT/multidrug combinations after gastric ESD, particularly those administered multidrug combinations after discharge.

Transformation of CSD When Crystal Shape Changes with Crystal Size into CLD from FBRM by Using Monte Carlo Analysis

In manufacturing process, it is necessary to measure change in CSD (Crystal Size Distribution) with time accurately because CSD is one of the most important indices that evaluate quality of products. FBRM (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) can measure CLD (Chord Length Distribution) in line, but CLD is different from CSD because of principle of FBRM. However, if CSD is determined beforehand, CLD can be calculated from the CSD with statistical method. First, when crystal shape is defined from the characteristic crystal size, the matrix of each crystal shape which transforms CSD into CLD in a uniform manner is calculated with Monte Carlo analysis. Characteristic crystal size is added to the variables defining chord length in order to avoid complex integrals and apply the change in crystal shape with characteristic crystal size to the transforming matrix. Secondly, CSD and CLD are actually measured in suspension of acetaminophen in ethanol and suspension of L-arginine in water to demonstrate the validity of 2 matrices. Lastly, these matrices are multiplied by some simple CSD models to test the properties of these matrices and demonstrate the utility of this transformation.

Successful initial ablation therapy contributes to survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

aiM： To evaluate the outcome predictors of percutaneous ablation therapy in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）, especially to identify whether the initial treatment response contributes to the survival of the patients. METHODS： The study cohort included 153 patients with single （102） and two or three （51） HCC nodules 5 cm or less in maximum diameter. As an initial treatment, 110 patients received radiofrequency ablation and 43 patients received percutaneous ethanol injection. RESULTS： The Kaplan-Meier estimates of overall 3- and S-year survival rates were 75% and 59%, respectively. The log-rank test revealed statistically significant differences in the overall survivals according to ChildPugh class （P = 0.0275）, tumor size （P = 0.0130）, serum albumin level （P = 0.0060）, serum protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist Ⅱ level （P = 0.0486）, and initial treatment response （P = 0.0130）. The independent predictors of survival were serum albumin level （dsk ratio, 3.216; 950 CI, 1.407-7.353; P = 0.0056） and initial treatment response （risk ratio, 2.474; 95% CI, 1.076-5.692; P = 0.0330） based on the Cox proportional hazards regression models. The patients had a serum albumin level 3.5 g/dL and the 3- and 5-year survival rates of 86% and 82%. CONCLUSION： In HCC patients treated with percutaneous ablation therapy, serum albumin level and initial treatment response are the independent outcome predictors.

A new hole-flanging method for thick plate by upsetting process

Flange height and lip accuracy are generally restricted by the formability of sheet metals in the conventional hole-flanging operation. A new hole-flanging process, named upsetting-flanging process, was proposed to obtain a more substantial flange from thick plate. The finite element method （FEM） with DEFORM was utilized to simulate the novel upsetting-flanging process and the influence of geometric parameters on the flange height was studied in details. A series of flanging experiments with A1050P-O were carried out to validate the FEM results, and the variations of Vicker hardness in the plate section were discussed. The results showed that the newly upsetting-flanging process revealed higher flange height and better lip accuracy than the conventional hole-flanging process, and the results between FEM simulations and experiments showed good agreement. Besides, the hardness of the plate around the flange part increases due to the work hardening after the upsetting-flanging process, which reveals better superiority in strength for the subsequent machining or assembling processes.
