Numerical Simulation of Groundwater Flow and Solute Transport for the Northern Batinah Area, Oman

The northern Batinah occupies approximately 12,150 km2 in the north of Oman Quaternary deposits and Neogene＇s upper Fats form the aquifer units. MODFLOW compatible MT3D was used for simulation development of the area. It can be concluded that：（1） The groundwater in the Batinah area generally flows from the south-west to the gulf of Oman in the north-east; （2） Recharge takes place through direct recharge from rainfall and wadi flow by about 902 ×10^3 ma/day; （3） The hydraulic conductivity attains a relatively wide range between 0.02 m/day and 78 m/day and 0.02 m/day and 60 m/day for the Quaternary and Fars respectively; （4） There is probably less potential for groundwater abstraction in the northern part of the area; （5） The water level decreased by about 6 m over 24 years and （6） The increase of salinity most likely due to a contribution of sea water intrusion from the gulf along the coast. It is recommended that：（1） automatic well control system should be installed to accurate measurements of abstraction; （2） further analysis under different future scenarios should be made and （3） formulate an integrated management plan for the basin.

Measurement of Radon Gas Concentrations in Tap Water Samples for Thi-Qar Governorate Using Nuclear Track Detector (CR-39)

In the present work, we have measured the radon gas concentrations in tap water samples are taken directly from drinking tap water in sites houses being carried in Thi-Qar governorate by using nuclear track detector (CR-39). The results of measurements have shown that the highest average radon concentration in water samples is found in al-Refai region which is equal to (0.223 ± 0.03 Bq/L), while the lowest average radon gas concentration is found in al-Fajr region which is equal to (0.108 ± 0.01 Bq/L), with an average value of (0.175 ± 0.03 Bq/L). The highest value of annual effective dose (AED) in tap water samples is found in al-Refai region, which is equal to (0.814 μSv/y), while the lowest value of (AED) is found in al-Fajr region which is equal to (0.394 μSv/y), with an average value of (0.640 ± 0.1 μSv/y). The present results have shown that radon gas concentrations in tap water samples are less than the recommended international value (11.1 Bq/L). There for tap water in all the studied sites in Thi-Qar governorate is safe as for as radon concentration being concerned.

Brain Abscess Surgery Outcome: A Comparison between Craniotomy with Membrane Excision versus Burr Hole Aspiration

Introduction: Brain abscess represents 8% of intracranial masses in developing countries. Despite the advances in neuro-imaging, still, the diagnosis of brain abscess is difficult and may need a biopsy in most cases to verify the diagnosis because may even lead to death. CT scan with contrast is a good tool for diagnosing and localizing brain abscesses in late stages, however, it is difficult to diagnose them in the early stages. The development of MRI helps to more accurately diagnose brain abscess. Surgical management of brain abscesses is either medical or surgical through craniotomy or burr holes. Indications of each are still a point of debate among most neurosurgeons. Methodology: This is a descriptive longitudinal prospective study to compare the outcomes of two surgical procedures used in The National Centre for Neurological Sciences-Khartoum-Sudan (NCNS) from 2012 to 2015, craniotomy and excision of the abscess membrane versus burr hole and aspiration of brain abscess in terms of duration of hospitalization, length of antibiotic use, recurrence rate, number of images needed for follow-up, and the final postoperative early and late outcomes. The data was collected through a designed questionnaire and was then analyzed using SPSS version 20. No significant ethical approval was required for this study. Results: Fifty-four patients were operated on through craniotomy (29/54) and burr hole (25/54). Their ages ranged from 1 year to 53 years with an average presentation at 13 years of age. Most patients presented with fever (23.1%), convulsions (16%), vomiting (16.7%) and headache (15.4%). The mean of illness for both groups was almost 2 months. The majority of patients in this study were having no risk factors (38.9%) while the major risk factors seen were cardiac diseases (14.8%), neurosurgical procedures (13%) and otitis media (11.1%). The coastline is one of the country’s most important environmental and economic resources. However, it is a delicate and highly coveted environ-ment on which many factors of evolution interact, both anthropogenic and natural. This work is concerned with the diachronic study of the coastline of the Mediterranean coast, particularly the coastal fringe at the level of Tangier Bay. In order to experimentally confirm the numerical models used and to take part in the development of an accurate, reliable and rapid decision support system for the assessment and remediation of the risks of accretion and coastal erosion, the methodology followed consists of the application of automatic analytical techniques, based on a geomatics approach, using a multi-temporal photo-interpretation, a Geographical Information System (GIS) and a computerized data analysis system (DSAS: Digital Shoreline Analysis System). The change rate will be calculated from the multi-date maps (1981-96 and 2017) using the End Point Rate (EPR). To achieve our objective, the study area was divided into three sectors from East to West: El Ghandouri Beach, Malabata Beach and the municipal square adjacent to the port. The GIS analysis of the data obtained shows that the coastline is present by location and for the three periods of comparison of the remarkable zones of erosion and sedimentation.

Introduction: Gallstone disease, also known as gallbladder stones or GBS, is almost always asymptomatic but can result in a number of problems, including ascending cholangitis and obstructive jaundice. The frequency of gallbladder stones among patients who were sent for abdominal ultrasound at Mogadishu Somali Turkey Training and Research Hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia, during the period between January 2018 and June 2022 was assessed in this study. Methods: This is a record-based study that was carried out at the radiology department of Mogadishu Somali Turkey Training and Research Hospital on patients who were chosen for abdominal ultrasounds during the months of January 2018 and January 2022. The study focused on cases that occurred within those periods. Reports of abdominal ultrasounds served as the source of the collected data. Results: Records from 2352 patients are included in this study. They were divided into 451 (19.1%) males and 1901 (80.8%) females. Patients with GBS were present in 76.4 percent of cases. 73.2 percent of patients had big stones larger than 5 mm, while 53.4 percent of patients had several stones. GBS 1474 (77.5%) was substantially more common in females than in males (71.6%: 323/451) (P 0.008). The presence of small stones (less than 5 mm) was also shown to be significantly different between males and females (P = 0.015). Furthermore, compared with men, females had a considerably higher frequency of big GBS (5 mm) (P 0.015). Conclusion: In this study, it was discovered that females were significantly more likely than males to have GBS. Small stones were found much more frequently in the males. When compared to men, females had a considerably higher frequency of large GBS.
