The current article addresses a new strategy for the preparation of polylactic acid/cellulose nanocrystal(PLA/CNCs)nanobiocomposite films with improved structural morphology,mechanical and barrier properties for food packaging *** addition of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)and sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS)as cationic and anionic surfactants respectively,was found to play a crucial role in preventing re-aggregation of the CNCs during drying and improving the dispersion of CNCs in the *** coated paper was characterized using mechanical tests,water vapor permeability(WVP),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and air *** results showed that the paper coated with PLA containing 7.5%CNCs and 0.15%CTAB based on weight of PLA,gives the highest measured paper properties,where an increase in tensile strength(+133%),Young’s modulus(+309%),tear index(+183%),burst(+60.8)and a decrease in air permeability(−92%)was obtained.

Bifenthrin is an insecticide which is used to control insects, mites, and ticks. It poses a solemn en-vironmental threat and health risk to living organisms. It may be bioaccumulated or biomagnified at different trophic levels in the food chain by biota. Microbes are hidden creature of earth’s biodiversity. For isolation of bifenthrin degrading bacteria, rhizospheric soil samples of plants like Pisum sativum, Triticun aestvum, Chenopodium album were taken from tannery solid waste, Kasur, Pakistan. Enrichment culture techniques were used for the isolation of bacterial strains that showed luxurious growth on minimal growth media with bifenthrin dose was selected for biodegradation study. Bacteria were further screened out based on their morphological, biochemical parameters and degradation efficiency. Furthermore the effect of different growth factors like temperature, pH, inoculum concencentration, minimal inhibitory concentration of heavy metals and antibiotics were also studied. Bacterial strains of Xanthomonas and Bacillus sp. were identified as efficient degrading microbes. Maximum bifenthrin utilization were observed at 25°C (pH 7), with 500 μL inoculum of Bacillus sp., while Xanthomonas sp. gave optimm utilization at 30°C (pH 7) at the same inoculum volume of bacteria. The Rf values of Bacillus sp. and Xanthomonas sp. were 0.91 and 0.90 respectively, which indicated their potential to metabolize bifenthrin into nontoxic forms. These strains can be used to clean up the sites polluted with pesticides and tannery wastes when present in rhizosphere of plants.

AIM: To develop a mathematical model for the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) with a panel of serum proteins in combination with α-fetoprotein(AFP).METHODS: Serum levels of interleukin(IL)-8, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(s ICAM-1), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor Ⅱ(s TNF-RⅡ), proteasome, and β-catenin were measured in 479 subjects categorized into four groups:(1) HCC concurrent with hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection(n = 192);(2) HCV related liver cirrhosis(LC)(n = 96);(3) Chronic hepatitis C(CHC)(n = 96); and(4) Healthy controls(n = 95). The R package and different modules for binary and multi-class classifiers based on generalized linear models were used to model the data. Predictive power was used to evaluate the performance of the model. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis over pairs of groups was used to identify the best cutoffs differentiating the different groups. RESULTS: We revealed mathematical models, based on a binary classifier, made up of a unique panel of serum proteins that improved the individual performance of AFP in discriminating HCC patients from patients with chronic liver disease either with or without cirrhosis. We discriminated the HCC group from the cirrhotic liver group using a mathematical model(-11.3 + 7.38 × Prot + 0.00108 × s ICAM + 0.2574 ×β-catenin + 0.01597 × AFP) with a cutoff of 0.6552, which achieved 98.8% specificity and 89.1% sensitivity. For the discrimination of the HCC group from the CHC group, we used a mathematical model [-10.40 + 1.416 × proteasome + 0.002024 × IL + 0.004096 × s ICAM-1 +(4.251 × 10-4) × s TNF + 0.02567 ×β-catenin + 0.02442 × AFP] with a cutoff 0.744 and achieved 96.8% specificity and 89.7% sensitivity. Additionally, we derived an algorithm, based on a binary classifier, for resolving the multi-class classification problem by using three successive mathematical model predictions of liver disease status. Background: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening infection occurring in 8% - 30% of ascitic cirrhotic patients;different laboratory diagnostics play a pivotal role for rapid and effective management of SBP patients. Polymorphonuclear leucocytic (PMNLs) count in Ascitic fluid (AF) is the mainstay for the diagnosis, whereas the diagnostic role of alternative biomarkers is rather controversial. In many studies, serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) was elevated and Complement 3 (C3) level was significantly consumed in AF of SBP patients. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum LBP and AF C3 in HCV-cirrhotics with SBP in relation to other well-established serum and AF markers. Patients and Methods: One hundred and twenty patients with HCV-cirrhosis and ascites were enrolled and consented: 50 patients with non-SBP ascites in group A and 70 ascitic patients diagnosed with SBP according to clinical suspicion and PMLs count in AF ≥ 250 cells/mm3 in group B in addition to 15 healthy individuals considered as a control group. Serum LBP, CBC, kidney and liver function tests, CRP, fasting and 2 h PP blood glucose and HCV antibodies were measured. AF samples were sent for C3 level, culture, PMNLs count, LDH, CRP, total proteins and albumin. Results: In patients with SBP, the level of serum LBP was not significantly high (p > 0.05) with best cut off value at 0.4500 and poor AUC (ely). AF C3 was significantly reduced in AF (p ellent AUC (0.889) with good sensitivity and specificity (82% & 84%, respectively). Background/purpose: Noninvasive assessment of esophageal varices (EVs), their size and bleeding stigmata may reduce endoscopic burden, cost and drawbacks. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of noninvasive fibrosis scores (AAR, APRI, FIB-4, King and VITRO scores) in predicting the presence of EVs and high risk varices needing treatment (VNT) in HCV-related cirrhosis of Egyptian patients. Methods: This prospective study included 154 HCV-related advanced compensated cirrhotic patients with no history of bleeding who underwent screening endoscopy for EVs. AAR, APRI, FIB-4, King and VITRO scores were assessed. Results: Esophageal varices were found in 120 patients (77.9%) and VNT in 92 patients (59.7%). Apart from AAR, all scores demonstrated statistically significant correlations with the presence and the size of EVs. Using area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), these scores were good predictors for the presence of EVs and VNT, where VITRO score had the highest AUC (0.920 and 0.900) and accuracy (97.1% and 87%), sensitivity (75, 82.6%), specificity (100, 93.5%), PPV (100, 95%) and NPV (53.2, 78.4%) with cutoffs >1.3 and >1.8 respectively. Conclusion: Noninvasive fibrosis scores can predict the presence of EVs and VNT. VITRO score was the best predictor with higher accuracy for clinical applicability than studied scores.

Characterization of Egyptian Manganese Ores for Production of High Carbon Ferromanganese

This work aims at studying the reactivity of Egyptian manganese ores to be used in the production of ferromanganese alloys in submerged electric arc furnace. Ores with different manganese content (high-medium and low) were selected and characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron Microscope (SEM). The main mineralogical compositions in the three ores are pyrolusite (MnO2) and hematite (Fe2O3). Porosity of selected Mn ores was determined. The reactivity of the different ores was carried out through pre-reduction of the selected ores using thermobalance at 900°C and 1100°C and mixture of CO and CO2 gases. The reduction process was done until steady weight. The reduced ores were examined using XRD and SEM. The results showed that pyrolusite in high and medium ores are converted completely to MnO at 1100°C. However, the ore with low manganese content was converted to MnO and Mn3O4. Consequently, it is clear from the results that Mn ores with high and medium MnO2 content are more reactive than those with low MnO2. Therefore, high MnO2 content Mn ores are preferable to get good economic impact during the production of high carbon ferromanganese.

Predictors of Vascular Calcification in Hemodialysis Patients

The quality of five commercial naphthalene sulfonated superplasticizers are assessed on the basis of DTA, EDAX, XRD, FTIR and HPLC methods of analyses, as well as their chemical and physical properties. The slump behavior of Portland cements with varying C3 A/C4 AF ratio is determined using the five admixtures. For the superplasticized concrete, the slump loss, initial setting time and up to 90-day compressive strength values are reported. It is found that, the polymer characteristics of the superplasticizers affect greatly the workability of the cement pastes and concrete. Also increasing the ferrite content in cement leads to the elimination of the differences of the polymer characteristics and causes a good fluidity of the pastes irrespective of the quality of the superplasticizer.

Background: The prevalence of both cardiovascular mortality and vascular calcification is much higher in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) than in the general population so early detection and intervention of VC may prevent or delay the progression and achieve improved patient outcomes. Objectives: To detect different predictors of vascular calcification in haemodialysis patients. Methods: This was a cross sectional observational study that included 85 patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) on regular dialysis 47 males and 38 females ranged between 18 and 80 years old selected from Nephrology Unit, Internal Medicine Department, Menoufia University Hospital from April 2019 to May 2020. Serum calcium, phosphorus, alkhaline phosphatase, intact PTH, serum Matrix GLA protein, vitamin D and non-contrast CT for calcium scoring of femoral arteries were performed. Results: There was a significant correlation between age of the patient by years (p value 0.0001), serum calcium (p value 0.0001), phosphate (0.0001), calcium phosphate products (p value 0.0001) and alkhaline phosphatase (0.0001), and vascular calcification score detected by non-contrast CT on femoral arteries and negative correlation between serum Matrix GLA protein p value 0.0001) and the detected calcification score;the lower the MGP level the higher calcification score while there was no correlation between body mass index (BMI) (p value 0.021) intact PTH (p value 0.117), serum vitamin D level (p value 0.643), serum albumin (p value 0.643), serum haemoglobin (p value 0.257) and duration of dialysis (p value 0.260) and the detected score. Serum phosphate and calcium phosphorus product are independent risk factors for vascular calcification severity in haemodialysis patients.
