Mycotic Infections in Diabetic Patients in Casablanca

Introduction: The diabetes constitutes the factor risk of mycotic infections. The pathogenic agents depend on the climate, geography and the migration. The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of the mycotic infections within the hospitalized diabetic patients, to describe their localization and identify the responsible germs. Patients and methods: It is about a descriptive and retrospective study conducted from November 2015 to March 2016 in endocrinology office at CHU Ibn Roch of Casablanca. It was included all diabetic patients hospitalized with whom mycotic infection has been suspected. Results: In total 350 diabetic patients have been hospitalized during the period of research. A mycotic infection has been suspected in 138 patients corresponding to the prevalence of 39.4 percent. The means localizations of mycotic infections were feet (intertrigos: 38.4%), onychomycosis (29%), vulvovaginal (21.7%) and mouth (oral candidiasis: 13.3%). The most frequent pathogenic agents were dermatophytes (Trichophyton rubrum: 61%, Trichophyton mentagrophytes: 6.3%) and Candida albicans (23.1%). The direct test and the culture were negative in 7.3%. Conclusion: One-third of the diabetic patients showed a mycotic infection. The feet, constitute the predilection localization of mycotic infections in the diabetic. The dermatophytes and Candida albicans constitute the most frequent pathogenic agents found in our study.

Patterns of brain injuries associated with maxillofacial fractures and its fate in emergency Egyptian polytrauma patients

Purpose： Maxillofacial injuries are commonly encountered in the practice of emergency medicine. More than 50% of patients with these injuries have multisystem trauma that requires coordinated manage- ment between emergency physicians and surgical specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolar- yngology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and trauma surgery. The aim of this study is to identify the patterns of brain injuries associated with maxillofacial trauma and its outcome. Methods： This descriptive study （cross-sectional） was carried out among 90 polytrauma patients with maxillofacial fractures attending the Emergency Department at Suez Canal university Hospital and fulfilling our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results： This study demonstrates the relation between type of maxillofacial fracture and type of trau- matic brain injuries in which the majority of patients with epidural hemorrhage presented with mid face fractures （60%）, while the minority of them presented with upper and lower face fractures （20% for each of them）. The majority of patients with subdural hemorrhage were associated with mid face fractures （75%）, the majority of patients with brain contusions associated with mid face fractures （75%）, and all of the patients presented by pneumocephalus were associated with mid face fractures （100%）. Conclusion： The results of this study confirm the value of quick diagnosis and early intervention, which is fundamental to prevent morbidity as well as mortality especially with regards to prevention of traumatic brain injury as even a short duration of hvpoxia and edema will lead to significant permanent neurological deficits.

Characterization and Impact of Cattle Manure Particle Size on Physical Properties of Sandy Soils

Sandy soils have poor physical properties, which cause them to drain quickly and not hold water well;however, with the addition of cattle manure, sandy soil can be improved. Therefore, experiments were conducted to investigate the characterization and impact of different particle sizes of cattle manure (CMS) on improving some physical properties of sandy soil and thus the yield of lettuce. Cattle manure was ground to powder and was sieved with three different Particle sizes 4.76-2 (CMS1), 2-0.8 (CMS2), 0.8-0.4 (CMS3) mm. Some physical properties were measured for different Particle sizes of manure. A batch of sorption experiments was carried out to study the role of different Particle sizes of manure on adsorption of N, P and k from aqueous solution. Two experiments were carried out on sandy soil (pots and field) to study the impact of adding CMS (5 ton/fed) to enhance some physical properties of sandy soil. The results indicated that the physical properties of cattle manure changed based on particle size fractionation, where Bulk density and saturated water holding capacity increased as particle size decreased, while porosity reduced as particle size decreased. The results of the sorption parameters of N, P and k on different particle sizes of manure indicated that maximum sorption occurred on CMS 3 for both P and k according to Langmuir and Freundlich sorption models. Two experiments showed that CMS had affected significantly the total porosity (TP), bulk density (Bd), slowly drainable pores (SDP), water holding pores and (WHP) available water (AW) in comparison to control. The CMS had a slight effect on Quickly-drainable pores (QDP) and fine capillary pores (FCP) as compared to the control in both experiments. Fresh weight, dry weight and number of leaf lettuce increased significantly with decreasing particle sizes of cattle manure as compared to control.

Vegetation Analysis and Soil Characteristics on Two Species of Genus <i>Achillea</i>Growing in Egyptian Desert

The present study provides a vegetation analysis and species distribution at 50 sites, emphasizing the environmental factors that affect species distribution. A total of 74 plant species belonging to 67 genera and related to 23 families of vascular plants are recorded. Asteraceae, Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae and Zygophyllaceae are the largest families, and therophytes (41.89) and chamaephytes (24.32%) are the most frequent, indicating a typical desert life-form spectrum. Chorological analysis revealed that 25 of the studied species were Mediterranean taxa, Saharo-Sindian chorotypes, either pure or penetrated into other regions, comprised 47 species. After application of the TWINSPAN and DCA programs, 4 vegetation groups (A-D) were identified, groups A and B were dominated by Achillea santolina, group C was codominated by Zygophyllm coccinum and Launaea spinosa and group D was dominated by Leptadenia pyrotechnica. Groups A and B may represent the vegetation types of the Western Mediterranean coast of Egypt, while groups C and D may represent the Wadi Hagul. The linear correlation of soil variables with the importance values of some dominant species and the application of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA-biplot) indicates significant associations between the floristic composition of the studied area and the edaphic factors such as electrical conductivity, pH, calcium carbonate, sulphates, bicarbonate, cations (Na+, k+, Ca++ and Mg++) and PAR.

Two new miniature metallic sealed-cells containing the triple point of water, WTP （273.16 k） and the triple point of mercury, HgTP （234.3156 k） have been constructed for the realization of the International Temperature Scale of 1990 （ITS-90） at the National Institute of Standards （NIS-Egypt）. The two new cells, in addition to a previously realized argon and oxygen triple point cells, will provide facilities for the calibration of capsule-type standard platinum resistance thermometers （CSPRTs） at one single run. Many phase transition plateaux were carried out and compared to the laboratory large reference cells using the same thermometers in order to test the performance of the new cell.

Effect of Potassium Source and Dose on Yield and Quality of Strawberry Fruit

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of potassium fertilization source and dose on productivity and quality parameters of strawberry. The trial was conducted in 2016-2017 at the experimental greenhouse of Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Sciences in Rabat. Strawberry plants of the cultivar “San Andreas” were planted on November 6th in 12 liter pots equipped with a gravity fertigation system. The experimental design was a split-plot with eight treatment combinations of two potassium fertilizer sources: 1) Potassium Sulphate for the whole growing cycle (PS/PS);2) Potassium Nitrate during the vegetative period and Potassium Sulfate during the fruit production period (PN/PS) and four potassium fertilizer doses: 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha of k2O replicated thrice. Potassium sulfate source was superior to potassium nitrate on the improvement of productivity and quality parameters of strawberry fruit. Potassium sulphate improved the number of flowers by 16%, fruit production by 21%, sugar content by 3%, and titrable acidity content by 0.5 g/L. The highest yield was recorded in plants receiving 300 kg/ha k2O as potassium sulphate. The 300 kg k2O/ha dose gave also superior results regarding quality parameters of strawberry fruit. This optimum potassium dose enhanced number of flowers by 35%, fruits produced by 44%, sugar content by 25% and titrable acidity content by 0.9 g/L.

Hypoglycemia Controlled by Prednisone in an Occult Insulinoma or a Nesidioblastosis

Insulinoma is a pancreatic endocrine tumor lower in size than 20 mm in 80% of the cases and his treatment is chirurgical. However, in certain circumstances such as an occult location or circumstances of metastases, medical treatment is called for. Observation: A 29 years old patient with no specific pathological antecedents has presented severe hypoglycemia mainly in the morning. A patient was in a generally good condition. The fasting test revealed an inappropriate secretion of insulin at a venous glycemia of 0.35 g/l;which was corroborated by Turner index and altered glucose insulin index that we calculated. Moreover, the 8 h cortisolemia was normal at 90.13 ng/l, the TSH was normal at 1.44 μui/l, anti-insulin antibodies were negative at 6.7 U/l;the search of hypoglycemic sulfonamides was negative. Morphologically, she had three pancreatic tomodensitometry these were normal. She also had echo-endoscopy which showed a normal pancreas. The surgical exploration with preoperative echo is advised only after surgeon’s assessment when the technical conditions are not put together. The diagnosis of the occult insulinoma or of nesidioblastosis was retained. The medical treatment was retained. Due to the unavailability of diazoxide in our pharmacies and the high cost of analogs of somatostatine, she was provided with prednisone 0.5 mg/kg/24h which was 40 mg/day after common agreement. The evolution was favorable. Conclusion: It should be noticed that medical treatment can be suggested if insulinoma is not localized. This observation proves that the localization of the insulinoma can be unsuccessful. It should also be noticed that our experience is the fourth described in literature, where hypoglycemia in insulinomas is controlled by prednisone.

Corals studies in Libya are very limited, although they play an important role in the oil exploration as they form excellent reservoirs of coral reef buildups at some oil fields of Sirt Basin (e.g. Intisar “Idris” and Sahabi Fields). Both fields are produced from Paleocene coral reefs. Meanwhile, in Cyrenaica, corals are of less importance as they are not reported in subsurface tertiary rocks, which probably in the environmental settings of these sediments out of the core of reef as occurred in the surface. Meanwhile, corals are reported from older (Jurassic) subsurface successions as in Concession NC-152, but the cementation diagenesis leads to blocking and destroying the porosity. This study presents the first surface documentation work of eight scleractinian coral species from the exposed sediments in northern Libya, where sixtaxa is reported from Al Jabal al Akhdar region, these include a) an association of huge colonies of Caulastrea sp. and Stylophora sp., from the Middle Eocene Darnah Formation at West Darnah road cut section. Theco-existence of the fastCaulastrea sp. with the slow Stylophora sp. is due to the competition strategy;b) Antiguastrea sp. which is reported from the Oligocene Algal Limestone of Al Bayda Formation at Daryanah-Abyar Roadcut section;c) Cyphastrea sp. andAleveopora sp. from Oligo-Miocene Al Faidiyah Formation at Al Fatayah cement quarry and d) Tarbellastraea sp. From Middle Miocene Benghazi Formation at Benghazi Cement Quarry. In addition, two species Astraeaopora sp. and Actinacis paroraiare reported from the Upper Miocene sediments of formation “M” in As Sahabi area.

Drought stress has become more common in recent years as a result of climate change impacts on the production of banana crops and other fruit *** growth and productivity of Musa spp are severely impacted by the gradual degradation of water resources and the erratic distribution pattern of annual precipitation *** aim of the work includes increased drought tolerance in light of water scarcity in the world as a result of the bananas’being gluttonous for water *** investigation was carried out from 2019 to 2020 to study the effect of potassium silicate on morphological growth and biochemical parameters of Musa acuminata L under drought stress by *** a result,drought stress reduced the morphological characteristics such as shoots number,shoot length,roots number,and survival percentage and biochemical characteristics such as chlorophyll a,b,carotenoids,stomatal status,and *** proline content increased in the leaf of *** *** complemented with k2SiO3(2 to 6 mM)either individually or in combination with PEG led to an improvement in all morphological and biochemical *** activities of CAT,POD,and PPO enzymes increased significantly compared to ***,the lowest PPO,CAT,and POD activity were ***,k2SiO3 treatments under drought stress successfully enhanced the leaf stomatal *** results suggest that k2SiO3 can help to maintain plant integrity in the tested cultivar under drought stress.
