Rescue effects of aqueous seed extracts of Foeniculum vulgare and Carum carvi against cadmium-induced hepatic, renal and gonadal damage in female albino rats

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of aqueous seed extracts of fennel"Foeniculum vulgare"(FVE) and caraway "Carum carvi"(CCE) on liver, kidney and reproductive organs in female rats against cadmium chloride(CC) ***: A total of 36 adult female rats were divided into six groups, six in each *** group(fed normal diet), CC-treated group(50 mg CC/kg diet), CCE-treated group(150 mg CCE/kg diet), CCE + CC group, FVE(150 mg/kg diet) and FVE + CC. One month later, all rats were sacrificed and all samples were collected at proestrus ***: The toxic effects of CC were confirmed biochemically by significant increase of serum concentration of liver enzymes(P < 0.05), and creatinine(P < 0.001). Moreover,CC increased significantly the serum level of malondialdehyde(MDA) and decreased the total antioxidant capacity(TAC)(P < 0.001). In addition, serum concentrations of estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH)were significantly decreased(P < 0.01). Histopathologically, CC-treated group revealed marked pathological changes in renal, hepatic, ovarian and uterine tissues. All toxic findings observed in liver and kidney with CC treatment were found to be ameliorated markedly after co-treatments with FVE or CCE. Furthermore, co-treatment of FVE with CC improved significantly all studied reproductive parameters(P < 0.01).Conclusions: Both FVE and CCE could be used as efficient treatments for liver and kidney against CC intoxication. Moreover, FVE could be utilized as a potent treatment to protect and improve female fertility from cadmium intoxication.

Removal of arsenite by reductive precipitation in dithionite solution activated by UV light

This study investigates the removal of arsenite（As（III）） from water using dithionite activated by UV light. This work evaluated the removal kinetics of As（III） under UV light irradiation as affected by dithionite dose and light intensity, and characterized the nature of the precipitated solids using XPS and SEM-EDS. Photolysis of dithionite was observed by measuring dithionite concentration using UV absorbance at 315 nm. This study also investigated the effect of UV light path length on soluble As concentrations to understand resolubilization mechanisms. Total soluble As concentrations were observed to decrease with reaction time due to reduction of arsenite to form solids having a yellow-orange *** removal mechanism was found to be reductive precipitation that formed solids of elemental arsenic or arsenic sulfide. However, these solids were observed to resolubilize at later times after dithionite had been consumed. Resolubilization of As was prevented and additional As removal was obtained by frequent dosing of dithionite throughout the experiment. As（III） removal is attributed to photolysis of dithionite by UV light and production of reactive radicals that reduce As（III） and convert it to solid forms.

Relationship between heart girth, serum progesterone and superovulation response ofdonor Holstein cows

Objective: To determine effects of variations of heart girth, volume trait on embryo quality grade, and to explore the relationship between heart girth and circulating progesterone and correlations of circulating progesterone with embryo quality grade in superstimulated donor Holstein cows. Methods: Nineteen cows were subjected to a standard superstimulation protocol using follicle stimulating hormone. Blood samples were collected before superovulation, at insemination and at collection of embryos for progesterone analysis. Embryo quality grades were compared between high and low heart girth donors. Moreover, Pearson's correlations were determined between heart girth, progesterone and embryo quality. Results: Variation of heart girth was not associated with significant differences in embryo quality grade between high and low heart girth donor cows (P>0.05). However, we observed a significantly higher percentage of the third-grade embryo (24.09%) in low heart girth donors compared to 9.64% in high heart girth donors. Moreover, the percentage of the transferable embryo was numerically higher and that of the degenerated embryo was numerically lower in low heart girth cows. Donor cows with low response to superovulation (total structures ≤ 3) expressed numerically higher mean heart girth, compared to donors with high (total structures>15) and medium (total structures = 4-15) superovulation. Heart girth and body weight of donor cows were moderately correlated (r=0.45, P<0.05), but none was correlated with circulating progesterone at different sampling times except for a moderate correlation between body weight and progesterone at embryo collection (r=0.54, P=0.02). Circulating progesterone before superovulation was moderately correlated to the second-grade embryo (r=0.46, P<0.05) and to the third grade (r=0.52, P<0.05) embryo. Effects of electrochemical synthetic conditions on surface property and photocatalytic performance of copper and iron-mixed p-type oxide electrodes

Earth-abundant copper and iron-mixed oxide（CuO/CuFeO_2; CFO） film electrodes are synthesized using an electrochemical deposition（ED） technique at two different ED potentials（-0.36 and-0.66 V vs saturated calomel electrode（SCE）; denoted as ED-1 and ED-2, respectively）. Then, their surface morphologies are compared, and the photo（electro）catalytic activities for the reduction of Cr（VI） are examined in aqueous solutions at pH 7 under simulated sunlight（AM 1.5 G; 100 mW cm（-2））. The degree of the electrical potential applied to the ED process significantly affects the thickness of the synthesized electrode film and the intensity ratio of the diffraction peaks of CuO（111） and CuFeO_2（012）. A 200 μm thick ED-2 sample with a distinct stacking of CuO on CuFeO_2 exhibits a larger broadband absorption spectrum than the 50-μm thick ED-1 with less separate stacking. Furthermore, the ED-2 sample has a higher intensity ratio of the diffraction peaks of CuO（111） and CuFe02（012） than ED-1. As-synthesized ED-2 samples produce larger photocurrents, leading to faster Cr（VI） reduction on the surface under given potential bias（-0.5 V vs SCE）or bias-free conditions. The energy levels（i.e., flatband potential） for the two samples are almost the same（only 10 mV difference）, presumably supposing that the enhanced photoactivity of the ED-2 sample for Cr（VI） reduction is due to the facilitated charge transfer. The time-resolved photoluminescence emission spectra analysis reveal that the lifetime（r） of the charge carriers in the ED-1 sample is 0.103 ns, which decreases to 0.0876 ns in the ED-2. The ED-2 sample synthesized at a high negative potential is expected to contribute greatly to the application of other solar-to-fuel energy conversion fields as a highly efficient electrode material.

Formation of Trihalomethanes during Seawater Chlorination

The use of seawater for industrial cooling is a vital technology that poses some of the most profound environmental impact on the water quality in the Arabian Gulf. Biocide (chlorine) is added to the seawater to control biofouling of the cooling system. This added chlorine reacts with bromide and other chemicals naturally exist in the water to form a wide range of oxidants. Regrettably, reactions between the residual oxidants and natural organic matter in the water lead to formation of toxic halogenated organic compounds that have detrimental effects on the environment when they are discharged into the Gulf. This paper describes the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) in seawater cooling systems. Results of kinetic experiments have shown that concentrations of THMs increased rapidly with time during the first half hour. Chlorination of seawater has shown significant increase in total THMs (TTHMs) and in bromoform concentrations. Rapid decrease of UV absorbance at 254 nm was also observed during seawater chlorination which is indicative of natural organic matter degradation into small organic molecules including THMs and other by-products. The increase in chlorine dose was accompanied with an increase in TTHMs and bromoform concentrations. Linear relationships between total chlorine concentration and both final TTHMs and bromoform concentrations were established. First order exponential decay and exponential associate functions were developed to correlate chlorine dose with formed THMs.

Bach-Einstein Gravitational Field Equations as a Perturbation of Einstein Gravitational Field Equations

The Bach equations are a version of higher-order gravitational field equations, exactly they are of fourth-order. In 4-dimensions the Bach-Einstein gravitational field equations are treated here as a perturbation of Einstein’s gravity. An approximate inversion formula is derived which admits a comparison of the two field theories. An application to these theories is given where the gravitational Lagrangian is expressed linearly in terms of R, R2, |Ric|2, where the Ricci tensor Ric = Rαβdxαdxβ is inserted in some formulas which are of geometrical or physical importance, such as;Raychaudhuri equation and Tolman’s formula.

Blind people have many tasks to do in their lives. However, blindness generates challenges for them to perform their tasks. Many blind persons use a traditional stick to move around and to perform their tasks. But the obstacles are not detected in traditional stick, it is ineffective for visually impaired people. The blind person has no idea what kind of objects or obstacles are in front of him/her. The blind person has no idea what size the object is or how far away he or she is from it. It is difficult for a blind person to get around. To assist people with vision impairment by making many of their daily tasks simple, comfortable, and organized, they will be able to recognize anything (an obstacle for blind people). A smart stick with mobile application can be used. One of the solutions is a mobile-based Internet of Things solution, which is a stick intended to assist visually impaired people to navigate more easily. It enables blindness and low vision people to navigate and carry out their daily tasks with ease and comfort. A technologically advanced blind stick that enables visually impaired people to move with ease. This paper proposes a system of software and hardware that helps visually impairment people to find their ways in an easy and comfortable way. The proposed system uses smart stick and mobile application to help blind and visually impaired people to identify objects (such as walls, tables, vehicles, people, etc.) in their ways, this can enable them to avoid these objects. In addition, as a result, the system will notify the user through sound from the smartphone. Finally, if he/she gets lost, he will be able to send an SMS with his/her GPS location.

From seawater to hydrogen via direct photocatalytic vapor splitting: A review on device design and system integration

Solar-driven hydrogen production from seawater attracts great interest for its emerging role in decarbonizing global energy consumption. Given the complexity of natural seawater content, photocatalytic vapor splitting offers a low-cost and safe solution, but with a very low solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. With a focus on cutting-edge photothermal–photocatalytic device design and system integration, the recent research advances on vapor splitting from seawater, as well as industrial implementations in the past decades were reviewed. In addition, the design strategies of the key processes were reviewed, including vapor temperature and pressure control during solar thermal vapor generation from seawater, capillary-fed vaporization with salt repellent, and direct photocatalytic vapor splitting for hydrogen production. Moreover, the existing laboratory-scale and industrial-scale systems, and the integration principles and remaining challenges in the future seawater-to-hydrogen technology were discussed.

In this study we present the design and realization of a tunable dual band wireless power transfer(TDB-WPT)coupled resonator *** frequency response of the tunable band can be controlled using a surface-mounted *** transmitter(Tx)and the receiver(Rx)circuits are *** top layer contains a feed line with an impedance of 50Ω.Two identical half rings defected ground structures(HR-DGSs)are loaded on the bottom using a varactor *** propose a solution for restricted WPT systems working at a single band application according to the operating *** effects of geometry,orientation,relative distance,and misalignments on the coupling coefficients were *** validate the simulation results,the proposed TDB-WPT system was fabricated and *** system occupied a space of 40 mm×40 *** can deliver power to the receiver with an average coupling efficiency of 98%at the tuned band from 817 to 1018 MHz and an efficiency of 95%at a fixed band of 1.6 GHz at a significant transmission distance of 22 *** results of the measurements accorded well with those of an equivalent model and the simulation.

Evaluating mechanism of banana pseudo-stem retting using seawater:A cost-effective surface pre-treatment approach

Retting has been employed to extract natural fibers from agricultural wastes as a biological and cost-effective approach for *** its global abundance,banana pseudo-stem is a promising agro-waste for lignocellulosic fiber *** this study,fibers were extracted from the pseudo-stems after being pre-treated under four conditions using seawater at room temperature for up to 35 d Bacterial isolation from the fresh seawater sample and screening for ligninolytic ability were *** load as well as laccase and manganese peroxidase enzyme activity profile assay during the retting duration were *** transform infrared(FT-IR)and X-day diffraction(XRD)analyses were also examined for both pre-treated and untreated extracted *** results shows that six out of the eight bacterial isolates had the ability to degrade *** treatments(Raw stem+Raw seawater)and(Autoclaved stem+Raw seawater)recorded the highest viable bacterial load of 9.24×102 and 4.46×102 CFU,respectively,on the 14th day of the retting ***,the highest laccase and manganese peroxidase enzymes activity was recorded for(Raw stem+Raw seawater)and(Autoclaved stem+Raw seawater)treatments in the second to the third *** FT-IR spectra of the pre-treated fibers revealed relative reductions in peaks attributed to polysaccharides and other amorphous substances for all retting *** XRD diffractogram revealed that the crystallinity index(CI)of pre-treated fibers increased in all seawater retting treatment ***,the CI for fibers pre-treated under enzymatic conditions were enhanced even after five *** analysis for selected bacterial isolates showed homology to sequences of Bacillus velezensis,Shewanella sp.L8–5,and Citrobacter amalonaticus and Bacillus subtilis j8 *** these findings,it was suggested that physical,biological,and chemical actions were collectively involved in the seawater retting process of banana ps
