Analysis of Bifenthrin Degrading Bacteria from Rhizosphere of Plants Growing at Tannery Solid Waste

Bifenthrin is an insecticide which is used to control insects, mites, and ticks. It poses a solemn en-vironmental threat and health risk to living organisms. It may be bioaccumulated or biomagnified at different trophic levels in the food chain by biota. Microbes are hidden creature of earth’s biodiversity. For isolation of bifenthrin degrading bacteria, rhizospheric soil samples of plants like Pisum sativum, Triticun aestvum, Chenopodium album were taken from tannery solid waste, Kasur, Pakistan. Enrichment culture techniques were used for the isolation of bacterial strains that showed luxurious growth on minimal growth media with bifenthrin dose was selected for biodegradation study. Bacteria were further screened out based on their morphological, biochemical parameters and degradation efficiency. Furthermore the effect of different growth factors like temperature, pH, inoculum concencentration, minimal inhibitory concentration of heavy metals and antibiotics were also studied. Bacterial strains of Xanthomonas and Bacillus sp. were identified as efficient degrading microbes. Maximum bifenthrin utilization were observed at 25°C (pH 7), with 500 μL inoculum of Bacillus sp., while Xanthomonas sp. gave optimm utilization at 30°C (pH 7) at the same inoculum volume of bacteria. The Rf values of Bacillus sp. and Xanthomonas sp. were 0.91 and 0.90 respectively, which indicated their potential to metabolize bifenthrin into nontoxic forms. These strains can be used to clean up the sites polluted with pesticides and tannery wastes when present in rhizosphere of plants.

Stemming is used to produce stem or root of words. The process is vital to different research fields such as text mining, sentiment analysis, and text categorization, etc. Several techniques have been proposed to stemming Arabic text and among them, Khoja and light-10 stemmers are the most widely used. In this paper, we propose and evaluate two different stemming techniques to Arabic that are based on light stemming techniques. The new stemmers are compared to best reported light stemmer, which is light-10. Results and experiments, which were conducted using standard collections, reveal that The proposed stemmers yield 5.13% and 13.1% improvement in retrieval performance over light 10 with 0.369 average precision and 0.397, respectively and the improvement is statistically significant.

Assessment of Water Quality of Euphrates River Using Cluster Analysis

Multivariate statistical method including cluster analysis (CA) was used to assess temporal and spatial variations in the water quality of Euphrates River, Iraq, for a period 2008-2009 using 16 parameters at 11 sampling sites. Hierarchical CA grouped the 8 months into three periods (I, II and III) and classified the 11 sampling sites into two groups (I and II) based on similarities of water quality characteristics. The temporal pattern shows that April has higher pollution level relative to the other months. Spatially, sampling site 7 (S7) has lower pollution level while the other sampling sites have higher pollution level. Thus, this study shows usefulness of cluster analysis method for analyzing and interpreting of surface water dataset to assess the temporal and spatial variations in the water quality parameters and the optimization of regional water quality sampling network.

Transabdominal Pre-Peritoneal Mesh for Inguinal Hernia Repair with External Fixation versus Mesh Stapling

Background: It is unknown whether stapling the mesh affects recurrence rate, incidence of neuralgia, and port-site hernia. We chose to fix it to the exterior reducing port size, cost and pain, at the same comparing this with traditional mesh stapling. Methods: We conducted a prospective trial for laparoscopic TAPP inguinal hernia repair on 120 patients in which we fixed the mesh to the anterior abdominal wall using either two prolene threads that passed to the exterior and tied in place or traditional mesh stapling. Results: The operative time is ranged from 35 to 70 minutes for external fixation, 30 to 60 minutes for mesh stapling, and 4 to 51 months for follow-up, and no recurrence occurred in both groups during the procedure. Two cases with post TAPP pain in mesh stapling patients are discussed with reduction of the cost and port size in external fixation patients. Conclusion: It is not necessary to secure the mesh during laparoscopic TAPP inguinal hernia repair from the interior and it is fixed only to the exterior allowing a reduction in size of the ports and considerable reduction in cost with elimination of TAPP associated post operative pain.

Fetal RBCs Potential in Obstetric Protocols to Minimize Fetomaternal Hemorrhage

Background: During pregnancy a small number of fetal RBCs (Red Blood Cells) enter maternal blood without risk, and incidence of significant feto-maternal hemorrhage (FMH) and isoimmunization depends on how much fetal blood enters maternal circulation;the use of flow cytometer (FCM) in FMH detection is considered the best laboratory technique. Aims: To evaluate role of FCM in FMH estimation to optimize delivery protocols and decrease isoimmunization. Subject and Method: 100 pregnant women at labor were included, equally classified into early cord clamping (ECC) and delayed cord clamping (DCC) groups, each including 25 women delivered vaginally and 25 with caesarian section;the control groups included 20 non-pregnant females, 20 at 3rd trimester and 20 neonates. Fetal RBCs were done on Becton Dickinson (B.D) FCM, and the reagents used were 5-Glutaraldehyde 0.5% Sigma cat. G5882, flouroscine isothiocyanite (FITC) anti-hemoglobin F (Hb-F) cat. 555748, anti-carbonic anhydrase, Triton-X100 solution and Alsever’s solution cat. HFH-11, 0.1% phosphate buffer saline/bovine serum albumin (PBS/BSA). Statistical Analysis: Mann Whitney’s U-test, Chi-squared, Fischer’s Exact tests, and SPSS for windows version 15.0. Results: There was a significant increase in the volume of the FMH in the ECC compared to DCC groups (p < 0.0001), also in the vaginal delivery comparing to caesarian section subgroups within the DCC group (p < 0.01), and in the ECC compared to DCC within caesarian section subgroup (p < 0.02). Conclusion: Fetal RBCs estimation by FCM is good;perinatal laboratory test should be done in routine investigations, as a guide for obstetric techniques that can alter FMH volume and decrease subsequent isoimmunization.

Percutaneous Mesh Expansion and Fixation at the Retro-Rectus Plane without Stabs by Using Redirecting Suture Hook in Midline Hernias Repair

Background: Mesh expansion and fixation at retro-rectus plane through multiples stabs produces good results. But these stabs cause cosmetic disorders for the patients and doctors. So, we find some modification to do this procedure without these stabbing wounds in midline hernial repair. Patients and methods: This technique was used to fix the mesh at retro-rectus plane in 50 patients suffering from midline hernias, from January 2008 through January 2010 at Zagazig university Hospital, Egypt. Laparotomy incision was done over the hernial sac or at old incision;the contents were then released and reduced into peritoneal cavity without much subcutaneous dissection. The suitable sheet of polypropylene mesh to cover the hernial defect and any weak area was prepared and fixed at retro-rectus plane percutaneously without stabbing wounds by using redirecting suture hook. The mean period of follow up was 26 months. Results: There was no recurrence during the period of follow up. Five patients developed subcutaneous bluish discoloration at the site of some stitches, which disappear within two weeks with conservative treatment. Conclusion: Percutaneous mesh expansion and fixation at retro-rectus plane by using redirecting suture hook procedure has good results in recurrence rate and cosmetic appearance.

Characterization of Egyptian Manganese Ores for Production of High Carbon Ferromanganese

This work aims at studying the reactivity of Egyptian manganese ores to be used in the production of ferromanganese alloys in submerged electric arc furnace. Ores with different manganese content (high-medium and low) were selected and characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The main mineralogical compositions in the three ores are pyrolusite (MnO2) and hematite (Fe2O3). Porosity of selected Mn ores was determined. The reactivity of the different ores was carried out through pre-reduction of the selected ores using thermobalance at 900°C and 1100°C and mixture of CO and CO2 gases. The reduction process was done until steady weight. The reduced ores were examined using XRD and SEM. The results showed that pyrolusite in high and medium ores are converted completely to MnO at 1100°C. However, the ore with low manganese content was converted to MnO and Mn3O4. Consequently, it is clear from the results that Mn ores with high and medium MnO2 content are more reactive than those with low MnO2. Therefore, high MnO2 content Mn ores are preferable to get good economic impact during the production of high carbon ferromanganese.

Comorbidity of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children with Epilepsy, Egyptian Study

Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions with about 65 million people affected worldwide. It is also a common condition in children, where its prevalence is approximately 3.2 - 5.5/1000 in the developed world. Children with epilepsy (CWE) experience not only seizures but also multiple cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems. ADHD is one of the more common comorbidities of childhood epilepsy. Objectives: To discuss the relationship between childhood epilepsy and comorbidities especially ADHD. Study Design: This is a prospective observational analytical cross-sectional study carried out on one hundred and fifteen patients at Ain Shams University and Nasr-city Health Insurance out-patient clinics, Cairo, Egypt fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Patients were selected by simple random sample. Results: ADHD is very common epilepsy comorbidity in Egyptian epileptic children with under-diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion: Frequent assessment for ADHD in epileptic children is mandatory for better quality of life.

The Accuracy of Transabdominal Ultrasound in Detection of the Common Bile Duct Stone as Compared to Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (with Literature Review)

Introduction: Common bile duct stone (CBDS) is a common clinical problem that can cause serious complications, such as acute cholangitis and pancreatitis. It is important to have an accurate, safe, and reliable method for the definitive diagnosis of CBDS before proceeding to therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancrea-tography (ERCP). Objective: To compare the accuracy of trans-abdominal ultra-sound (TAUS) as a diagnostic tool at our institution—Kurdistan Centre for Gastroen-terology & Hepatology (KCGH)—with invasive tool like ERCP in the diagnosis of bile duct stones, using specificity, sensitivity, and positive and negative predictive values. Patient and Method: After obtaining ethical committee approval & informed consent from every patient. This was a prospective study conducted on 71 patients (24 male patients and 47 females patients) where suspected to have CBDS depending on history, clinical suspicion and blood tests. Their ages range between (2 - 88 years). Both TAUS and ERCP were performed. Final diagnosis was confirmed de-pending on ERCP as it served as a diagnostic standard in diagnosing CBDS. Result: In 71 patients suspected to have CBDS by TAUS, only 46 patients had stone (65%), and 55 patients had stone by ERCP (77%). In our result, sensitivity, specificity, pos-itive predictive value and negative predictive value for TAUS were 80%, 87.5%, 65.5% and 56%, respectively. Conclusion: TAUS can play an important role as an initial screening procedure for CBDS detection because of the various advantages like easy availability, cost effectiveness, no requirement of contrast material and lack of ionizing radiation but should done with other imaging modality to avoid se-rious complication of ERCP.
