Seroprevalence of brucellosis among exposed agro-pastoral communities in southern Saudi Arabia

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of brucellosis in human and animal’s communities in southern Saudi ***: A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological study was conducted in Aseer and Jazan, Saudi Arabia(October 2017-October 2018). Human serum samples(n=339) were initially screened for Brucella antibodies and positive samples were further titrated for Brucella antibodies by immunocapture assay(titer of ≥1:320 as positive). Animal samples(n=828) were screened using the Rose Bengal test. Relationship status was dichotomized to measure and predict independent contributions to variations in human using univariate and multivariate stepwise binary logistic regression model. Results: The rate of brucellosis among the 339 human samples in the two regions was 33.9%, and the rate of acute brucellosis was 12.4%. The rate of brucellosis in animals was 4.7%. Human brucellosis among the target groups was higher in northwestern Aseer(53.3%) compared to Southeastern Aseer(25.9%) and Jazan region(20.6%). The disease was more prevalent among non-Saudi nationals(35.2%) compared to Saudis(30.5%). The rate of brucellosis among butchers and shepherds was 37.5% and 37.2%, respectively. The rate of brucellosis was 37.8% in people over 30 years of age. Our univariate analysis showed that residing in Aseer region(OR: 2.60, 95% CI: 1.50-4.40), especially residing in northwestern Aseer region(OR: 4.40, 95% CI: 2.40-7.90), frequent consumption of raw meat(OR: 2.90, 95% CI: 1.50-5.50), shepherds(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.80-5.30), owning sheep(OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.10-4.40), daily contact with animals(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.75-5.80), and those > 30-year-old(OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.00-2.40) were significantly associated with increased risks of brucellosis. The Impact of Simulation Education on Self-Efficacy in Pre-Registration Nursing Students

This literature review primarily aims to explore and synthesise the previous studies in simulation education research conducted over the past five years related to the effects of simulation training on the self-efficacy of undergraduate pre-registration nursing students. The second aim of this study is to explore additional outcome variables that were examined in the previous studies. Five electronic databases were searched systematically. These databases were MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, Embase and PsycINFO. The PICO model was employed to identify the search terms, with a thesaurus being used to provide synonyms. Reference lists of relevant articles were examined and hand searches of journals were also undertaken. The quality of each study was assessed using the Simulation Research Rubric (SRR). A total of 11 studies were included. all studies explored the impact of simulation education on undergraduate pre-registration nursing. Six studies explored nursing students’ competence and performance and two papers examined their critical thinking. Problem solving, learning motivation, communication skills and knowledge acquisition were examined once. The majority of studies indicated that simulation training has a positive impact on pre-registration nursing students’ self-efficacy and other outcome variables. Furthermore, the study results indicate that simulation training is more dependable than traditional training, and students were extremely satisfied with the simulation training. However, most of the studies included in this review had several gaps, including study design, sample size and dissimilarities between the scales used. Further research with large samples, reliable and valid instruments, and outcomes measures (such as critical thinking and transferability of skills) is required to provide better insight into the effectiveness of simulation in undergraduate nursing education. .

Background:Adolescence is a critical,multifactorial developmental *** the current pandemic of COVID-19,excessive using of electronic devices is a public health *** aim of this study is to investigate the relation-ship between depression and the use of electronic devices among secondary school children in Jazan,Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 *** and Methods:The study is an observational,cross-sectional *** was collected using an anonymous online survey *** the Depression Anxiety Stress ***:A total of 427 participants were included in the *** prevalence of depression,anxiety,and stress in our study was 14.55%,12.01%,and 15.55%,*** the hours spent on electronic devices,13.6%of participants spent 1–4 h,43.6%spent 5–9 h,and 42.9%spent 10 h or more.86.7%reported an increase in their use of electronic devices during *** regression analysis revealed that the increase of Videogame Addiction Scale for Chil-dren is signiﬁcantly associated with an increase in Depression,Anxiety,and Stress scores(p-valueall).Conclusion:Electronic device use is a challenging issue among Saudi adolescents,and it has been associated with a negative impact on participants’mental *** study found a positive correlation between electronic device use and increased prevalence of mental health *** also found signiﬁcantly increased use of electronic device during the COVID-19 lockdown;hence,more mental issues were *** is obvious that electronic device use needs to be more controlled among *** can be achieved by involving those who are in this age group in other activities,like sports,which can reduce the time they spend on electronic device.

The common pentanucleotide polymorphism of the 3’-untranslated region of the leptin receptor gene is associated with obesity in Saudi females

Obesity is due to the combined effects of genes, environment, lifestyle, and the interactions of these factors. Leptin receptor (LEPR) gene has been intensively evaluated in the search of variants that could be related to obesity. The results of most of these studies have been controversial. We investigated the effects of leptin receptor gene 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) polymorphism on phenotype, metabolic parameters and anthropometric measurements of obese Saudi females. 122 healthy women aged 19 to 36 years. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to their body mass index BMI;lean (BMI 18 - 24), overweight (BMI 25 - 29) and obese (BMI ≥ 30). There were 13 homozygotes and 34 heterozygotes for the 3’-UTR insertion allele amongst all 122 women. The results of this study show that the allele frequency of the insertion allele (I) of 3’UTR was significantly higher in overweight (35.3) and obese females (32.2) compared to the frequency in lean females (15.6). The insertion allele was associated with increased BMI in obese groups. The results obtained from this study indicated that in the obese subjects most variable values increased in I/I homozygote but the significant high value recorded among BMI (40.9 ± 7.11 kg/m2, P = 0.042). Our findings indicated that, the obesity in Saudi females is influenced by alteration in the leptin receptor gene 3’-UTR polymorphism.
