Rudists(Bivalvia) from a Cretaceous Platform in Northern Egypt: Taxonomy and Paleobiogeography

New well-preserved rudist materials come from the Barremian–Turonian marine formations in the Yelleg, Minsherah, Maaza, and Raghawi sections in North Sinai, northern Egypt. There, 17 discovered rudist species belonging to 13 genera and seven taxonomic families are described in detail as follows: Eoradiolites plicatus(Conrad), Eoradiolites liratus(Conrad), Praeradiolites ponsianus(d'Archiac), Archaeoradiolites sp., Bournonia africana Douvillé, Bournonia fourtaui Douville, Biradiolites lombricalis(d'Orbigny), Biradiolites zumoffeni Douville, Radiolites lewyi lewyi Parnes, Radiolites sauvagesi(d'Hombres-Firmas), Durania arnaudi(Choffat), Toucasia carinata(Matheron), Toucasia sp., Neocaprina raghawiensis Steuber and Bachmann, Sellaea sp., Ichthyosarcolites sp. and Horoiopleura sp.. The Cenomanian deposits in the northern Eastern desert of Egypt only contain E. liratus. The domination of the Cenomanian rudist species in North Sinai, however, is attributed to changes in the platform, which passes mainly from carbonate in the north to siliciclastics in the south. The presence of Horiopleura sp. in the late Barremian-early Aptian deposits is documented for the first time, which suggests the expansion of taxa of the genus Horiopleura Douville to North Sinai during this interval. The age of the rudist species is documented from the late Barremian-Turonian formations, with their geographic distribution in the Mediterranean region considered..

Green process of biomass waste derived fluorescent carbon quantum dots for biological imaging in vitro and in vivo

In the context of the circular economy,the huge amounts of biomass waste should be converted into value-added materials and energy to diminish pollution,atmospheric CO_(2)levels and costly waste disposal.Biological imaging usually uses expensive and toxic chemicals e.g.,organic dyes,semiconductor quantum dots,calling for safer,greener,cheaper fluorescent probes for biological imaging in vitro and in vivo.In these regards,carbon quantum dots(CQDs)-based fluorescent probes using biomass waste as a precursor may have much higher potential.Here we transformed the biomass waste of peach leaves into value-added fluorescent CQDs through a low-cost and green one-step hydrothermal process.The obtained CQDs show excitation-dependent photoluminescence properties with a fluorescence lifetime of 5.96 ns and a quantum yield of 7.71%without any passivation.In addition,the CQDs have a fine size of 1.9 nm with good hydrophilicity and high fluorescent stability over pH 4.0-11.0 range.Fluorescence imaging of in vitro cell cultures and in vivo with zebrafish show that CQDs possess ultra-low toxicity and remarkable performance for biological imaging.Even when CQDs present at a concentration as high as500μg/m L,the organism can still maintain more than 90%activity both in vitro and in vivo,and present bright fluorescence.The cheaper,greener,ultra-low toxicity CQDs developed in this work is a potential candidate for biological imaging in vitro and in vivo.

Efficacy of using NRT thresholds in cochlear implants fitting,in prelingual pediatric patients

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of using neural response telemetry(NRT)thresholds in predicting behavioural thresholds during programming of cochlear implant in prelingual children.Method:Prospective study of 28 cochlear implants implanted with Nucleus 24 cochlear implant.We recorded NRT-thresholds on electrode numbers 1,6,11,16 and 22 of the electrode array in each patient,the neural response thresholds were correlated with the behavioural map after six months of programming the device.Results:The mean neural response telemetry level was significantly higher than the mean threshold level(T-level)but lower than the comfortable level(C-level)in all the electrodes tested.NRT levels could statistically significantly predict T behavioural levels and comfortable behavioural levels,p<0.01.There was a strong positive correlation between comfortable thresholds and neural response telemetry level measurements and behavioural threshold level and neural response telemetry threshold measurements.Conclusion:There is a useful role for neural response telemetry values in predicting the behavioural threshold and comfortable values in prelingual children.Combining the NRT values with behavioural observations can improve the programming of cochlear implants.

Prognostic Features of BCR-ABL Genetic Variations in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a hematologic malignancy which results from accumulation of lymphoid progenitor cells in the bone marrow and/or extramedullary sites. Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1) positive ALL, a high-risk cytogenetic subset, accounts for 25% - 30% of adult ALL cases but occurs in less than 5% of children. We aimed with this study to detect BCR-ABL genes fusion, amplification and deletion in ALL patients, using extrasignal-fluorescence in situ hybridization (ES-FISH), and to assess their relation with other standard prognostic factors and therapeutic response. Patients and Methods: This study was carried out on 39 newly diagnosed ALL patients. All patients were subjected to: history, clinical examination and laboratory investigations, which included complete blood count (CBC), peripheral blood (PB), bone marrow (BM) examination, immunophenotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization using extra-signal probe to detect BCR-ABL genes fusion. Results: This study showed statistical analysis of patients’ t(9;22) with other factors revealed, significant association (p 35 years, hepatosplenomegaly, absence of lymphadenopathy, TLC ≥ 50 × 109/L, absolute PB blasts ≥ 4.4 × 109/L, immunophenotyping and other aberrations. Conclusion: BCR/ABL fusion gene analysis by ES-FISH may serve as a prognostic marker in adulthood ALL. The age, TLC and t(9;22) represent the significant standard prognostic factors in relation to patients’ outcome.

Magnetic field induction and magnetic force distribution profiles in plasma focus discharge device

We report a simple-to-perform technique to investigate the distribution of the azimuthal magnetic field induction,Bθ,and the induced magnetic force acting on the plasma current sheath(PCS)in a plasma focus(PF)discharge.This in situ measurement technique can undoubtedly be beneficial when other fast-imaging techniques are not available.techniques are not available.Experimental work was conducted in the low-energy Mather-type EAEA-PF1 device operated in argon.The axial distribution(Bθ)z along the coaxial electrodes system was measured with a four magnetic-probe set technique at different radial distances(r=2.625×10^(−2) to 4.125×10^(−2) m)within the annular space between the coaxial electrodes during the 1st and 2nd half cycles of the discharge current waveform,where inner electrode of coaxial electrode system has a+ve polarity and−ve polarity,respectively.Axial,radial and total magnetic force distribution profiles were estimated from Bθdata.Investigation of PCS shape in terms of its inclination(curvature)angle,θ,along the axial rundown phase and the correlation between the magnetic forces per unit volume acting on the PCS,the inclination angleθof the PCS,and the formation of a powerful PF action during the 1st and 2nd half cycles is carried out.Dependence of inclination angle,θ,on total magnetic force per unit volume acting on PCS axial motion was studied,separately,during the 1st and 2nd half cycles.

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 (SARS-CoV-2) represents a major health problem worldwide. Thus, early detection and appropriate management of the virus will influence the outcome of the disease. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and survival outcomes of patients with COVID-19 infection in Kassala, Eastern Sudan. Methods: A cross-sectional hospital-study was conducted among patients visiting Kassala teaching hospital with suspicion of COVID-19 infection. A structured questionnaire was used to gather clinical and socio-demo- graphic information from COVID-19 patients. Nasopharyngeal specimens and blood samples were collected and tested to confirm the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection using RT-PCR. Results: A total of 371 patients were enrolled in the study from September 2020 to January 2021, with mean age ± SD was 42.9 ± 19.9. The prevalence of COVID-19 infection was estimated at 61.7%. The majority were males 159 (69.4%), of university-level education, 96 (49.7%), and urban residents, 175 (9.7%). The most common symptoms were fever 215 (93.9%), cough 188 (82.1%), headache 179 (78.2%), and shortness of breath 154 (67.2%). Overall all mortality was reported as 16%. Older age group with the age ≥ 70, P P = 0.020, diabetes mellitus P = 0.029 were significantly associated with high case fatality. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that older age, male gender, laboratory tests (leukocytosis, lymphopenia, low Hemoglobin and high CRP) and various comorbid conditions significantly increase the disease severity and mortality. Therefore, attention should be paid to preventive measures to reduce the considerable impacts of the disease.

Validation of prognostic indices in Egyptian Budd-Chiari syndrome patients: A single-center study

AIM To compare predictive ability of Budd-Chiari syndrome(BCS) prognostic indices(PIs) for one-year survival and Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) patency.METHODS This retrospective study enrolled 194 Egyptian patients with primary BCS who presented to the BuddChiari Study Group of Ain Shams University Hospital. Calculation of the available PIs was performed using Child-Pugh and model for end-stage liver disease scores, BCS-specific PIs(Clichy, New Clichy andRotterdam) for all patients, and BCS-TIPS PI only for patients who underwent TIPS. The overall one-year survival rate and the one-year shunt patency rate for TIPS were reported.RESULTS The overall one-year survival rate was 69.6%, and the New Clichy PI revealed the best validity for its prediction at a cut-off value of 3.75, with sensitivity and specificity of 78% and 73.3%, respectively [area under receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC) = 0.806]. The one-year survival rate post-TIPS was 89.7%, and the BCS-TIPS score demonstrated validity for its prediction at a cut-off value of 3.92(sensitivity and specificity were 71.4% and 64.5%, respectively)(AUC = 0.715). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the New Clichy PI(P = 0.030), high serum total bilirubin(P = 0.047) and low albumin(P < 0.001) were independent factors for predicting mortality within one year. The one-year shunt patency rate in TIPS was 80.2%, and none of the PIs exhibited significant validity for its prediction. CONCLUSION The New Clichy score could independently predict the one-year survival in Egyptian BCS patients.

Association between <i>Helicobacter pylori</i>Infection and Iron Deficiency Anemia among School-Age Children in Sohag University Hospital, Upper Egypt

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been suggested as a cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) refractory to iron therapy. Objective: The aim of this work was to evaluate the association between H. pylori infection and IDA among school-age children. Subjects and Methods: This was a prospective case-control study conducted for one year starting from March 2015 and included 200 school-age children with IDA and 50 age and sex matched non-anemic controls, attending pediatric outpatient clinic at Sohag university Hospital, Sohag, Upper Egypt. All of participants were subjected to clinical evaluation and the following investigations: CBC, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, serum ferritin and a quantitative detection of H. pylori IgG antibodies. Results: Totally, 72 (36%) children with IDA and 6 (12%) non-anemic controls had positive level for H. pylori specific IgG (P = 0.036). H. pylori IgG antibody titer showed significant positive correlation with age and significant negative correlation with each of Hb level, MCV, HCT and serum ferritin. Age was higher (p H. pylori positive IDA cases in comparison to H. pylori negative IDA cases. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate significant association between positive serology for H. pylori infection and IDA in school-age children. Moreover, infection may increase the severity of anemia.

Surgical Management of Perforated Peptic Ulcer;Closure with Omental Patch versus Definitive Repair with Vagotomy and Gastrojejunostomy: A Comparative Study

Background: The perforation of peptic ulcer is a common and serious life threatening surgical emergency. Up-till now no consensus was reached regarding the best practice in management of perforated peptic ulcer. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare between both management strategies of perforated peptic ulcer;performing simple closure of the perforation with an omental patch then H. pylori eradication and inhibition of acid secretion using long time proton pump inhibitors versus performing definitive repair of perforated peptic ulcer (closure of the perforation with an omental patch, truncal vagotomy and gastrojejunostomy to discover a proper management strategy of perforated peptic ulcer. Patients and Methods: In the current study we included 30 patients which were divided into 2 groups: group 1 included 15 patients where we managed them by simple closure of the perforation with an omental patch then H. pylori eradication and inhibition of acid secretion using long time proton pump inhibitors and group 2 included 15 patients where we performed closure of the perforation with an omental patch, truncal vagotomy and gastrojejunostomy. Results: We found that younger patient underwent vagotomy and gastro-jejunostomy technique (p Conclusions: Peptic ulcer perforation could be safely managed by primary closure and covering by omentum in addition to medical treatment of H. pylori infection and inhibition of acid secretion especially in old patients with comorbid condition who presented late or with shock.

Sex Hormones Changes in Blood and Their Effect on Fecundity of African Catfish(Clarias gariepinus Burchell,1822)after Being Injected with Different Doses of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin(HCG)Hormone

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different doses injection of human chorionic gonadotropin(HCG)hormone on fecundity and serum sex hormones(FSH,LH,estrogen(E2),progesterone(P4),testosterone(T))of African catfish(Clarias gariepinus).African catfish spawners were intermuscularly injected with different doses of HCG(500,1500,3000,6000 IU/kg female),and group is not injected as a control;males were injected at half the female dose.The results showed that,fish group injected by 6000 IU HCG/kg female had the highest gonadsomatic index,absolute fecundity and relative fecundity,while,the lowest value of absolute fecundity and relative fecundity were recorded with 500 IU HCG/kg female.The group injected with the highest amount of HCG(6000 IU/kg female)recorded the lowest value from egg diameter,while the highest egg diameter was observed in 500 IU HCG/kg female.In females,the group injected with 6000 IU HCG/kg female reflected the lowest level of FSH and the highest level of LH and the highest level of P4 compared to other treatments.Level of T recorded the highest level with 1500 IU HCG/kg female.The control group reflected the highest level of FSH and E2,while the control group reflected the lowest level of T and P4 level.In males,serum FSH,LH,P4 and E2 in male groups injected with HCG were relatively higher than those recorded in the control group.The highest level of T was recorded in treatment injected with the highest dose of HCG and decreased in other treatments until recorded the lowest level of T in the control group.It was observed,HCG hormone has successfully and accelerate induced spawning in African catfish(Clarias gariepinus)and increased in reproductive performance with the increase in HCG dosage and as compared to group not injected.
