Evaluation of children and adults with post-COVID-19 persistent smell,taste and trigeminal chemosensory disorders:A hospital based study

BACKGROUND Smell disorders are the most frequent persistent coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** To describe the patterns and characteristics of persistent smell and taste disorders in Egyptian *** Assessment was done to 185 patients(adults=150,age:31.41±8.63 years;children=35;age:15.66±1.63 years).Otolaryngology and neuropsychiatric evaluations were *** included:A clinical questionnaire(for smell and taste);sniffin'odor,taste and flavor identification tests and the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements(sQOD-NS).RESULTS Duration of disorders was 11.53±3.97 ms(6-24 ms).Parosmia(n=119;64.32%)was developed months after anosmia(3.05±1.87 ms).Objective testing showed anosmia in all,ageusia and flavor loss in 20%(n=37)and loss of nasal and oral trigeminal sensations in 18%(n=33)and 20%(n=37),*** had low scoring of sQOD-NS(11.41±3.66).There were no specific differences in other demographics and clinical variables which could distinguish post-COVID-19 smell and taste disorders in children from *** The course of small and taste disorders are supportive of the nasal and oral neuronal ***-COVID-19 taste and trigeminal disorders were less frequent compared to smell ***-COVID-19 flavor disorders were solely dependent on taste and not smell *** were no demographics,clinical variables at onset or specific profile of these disorders in children compared to adults.

Coronaviruses caused an outbreak pandemic disease characterized by a severe acute respiratory distress syndrome leading to the infection of more than 200 million patients and the death of more than 4 million *** primary treatment is either supportive or *** products have an important role in the development of various ***,screening of natural compounds with reported antiviral activities can lead to the discovery of potential inhibitory entities against *** the current study,an in-silico molecular docking experiment was conducted on the effects of some of these natural antiviral phytoconstituents,(e.g.,procyanidin B2,theaflavin,quercetin,ellagic acid,caffeoylquinic acid derivatives,berginin,eudesm-1β,6α,11-triol and arbutin),on the crystal structure of SARS-CoV-2 main protease(PDB ID:6w63)using AutoDock-Vina *** of the docked compounds revealed good binding affinity,with procyanidin B2(–8.6 Kcal/mol)and theaflavin(–8.5 Kcal/mol)showing a better or similar binding score as the ligand(–8.5 Kcal/mol).molecular dynamics simulations were carried out at 100 ns and revealed that procyanidin B2 forms a more stable complex with SARS-CoV-2 main protease than *** B2,theaflavin,and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid were evaluated for toxicity by ProTox-II webserver and were non-toxic according to the predicted LD50 values and safe on different organs and ***,these phytoconstituents showed good ADmE properties and acceptable lipophilicity,as evaluated using *** the tested compounds,procyanidin B2 showed the highest lipophilic *** is worth mentioning that these natural inhibitiors of SARS-CoV-2 main protease are components of green and black tea that can be used as a supporting supplement for COVID patients or as potential nuclei for further drug design and development campaigns.

Neuroprotective potential of Indigofera oblongifolia leaf methanolic extract against lead acetate-induced neurotoxicity

Lead （Pb） is one of the most common environmental toxicants, exposure to which can cause significant neurotoxicity and an associated decline in brain function. This study investigated the possible neuroprotective role oflndigofera oblongifolia leaf methanolic extract （IOLmE） against lead-induced neurotoxicity. Rats were intraperitoneally injected with lead acetate, with or without IOLmE （intragastric administration for 5 days）, and the neuroprotective effect of IOLmE was assessed by measuring the lead concentration, redox status （lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide and glutathione）, enzymatic antioxidant activities （superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and reductase）, PCR assays of apoptosis markers （Bax and Bcl-2） and histopathology of the brain. The increases in the lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, and apoptosis, the decreases in the glutathione level and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and the altered histology of the brain induced by lead acetate were mitigated in the brain of rats pre-treated with IOLmE. These findings indicate that IOLmE has beneficial effects and it mitigates lead acetate-induced neurotoxicity via its antiox-idant and anti-apoptotic activities.

Background: The discovery of miRNAs circulating in the peripheral blood has opened new directions of research to identify new non-invasive markers for diagnosis of diseases. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the expression levels of circulating plasma miRNAs (miRNA-21 & miRNA-122) in Egyptian patients with chronic uncomplicated and complicated HCV. Patients & methods: This study was conducted on 60 Chronic HCV infected patients. Patients were divided into three groups (20 patients each): uncomplicated HCV, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). All patients were subjected to laboratory investigations including complete blood picture, liver function tests. Expression levels of miRNA-21 and -122 in plasma using RT-PCR were determined. Results: miRNA-21 showed significant fold increase in chronic uncomplicated HCV while significant fold decrease in cirrhotic and HCC groups (P = 0.036). On the other hand, miRNA-122 showed significant fold elevation in both chronic uncomplicated and cirrhotic groups and significant fold decrease in HCC group (P = 0.005). ROC curve analysis for miRNA-122 yielded 68.4% sensitivity and 100% specificity for the differentiation of HCC patients from non-HCC at a cutoff 0.184. Neither miRNA-21 nor miRNA-122 was a successful predictor for HCC diagnosis. Conclusion: miRNA-122 can be used as novel non-invasive biomarker for monitoring HCV related disease progression.

This work developed models to identify optimal spatial distribution of emergency evacuation centers(EECs)such as schools,colleges,hospitals,and fire stations to improve flood emergency planning in the Sylhet region of northeastern *** use of location-allocation models(LAms)for evacuation in regard to flood victims is essential to minimize disaster *** the first step,flood susceptibility maps were developed using machine learning models(mLms),including:Levenberg-marquardt back propagation(Lm-BP)neural network and decision trees(DT)and multi-criteria decision making(mCDm)*** of the mLms and mCDm techniques were assessed considering the area under the receiver operating characteristic(AUROC)*** approaches in a geographic information system(GIS)for four well-known LAm problems affecting emergency rescue time are proposed:maximal covering location problem(mCLP),the maximize attendance(mA),p-median problem(PmP),and the location set covering problem(LSCP).The results showed that existing EECs were not optimally distributed,and that some areas were not adequately served by EECs(i.e.,not all demand points could be reached within a 60-min travel time).We concluded that the proposed models can be used to improve planning of the distribution of EECs,and that application of the models could contribute to reducing human casualties,property losses,and improve emergency operation.

A nanofluid is composed of a base fluid component and nanoparticles, in which the nanoparticles are dispersed in the base fluid. The addition of nanoparticles into a base fluid can remarkably improve the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid, and such an increment of thermal conductivity can play an important role in improving the heat transfer rate of the base fluid. Further, the dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids along with nanoparticles is quite interesting with numerous industrial applications. The present predominately predictive modeling studies the flow of the viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid over a rotating disk in the presence of nanoparticles. A progressive amendment in the heat and concentration equations is made by exploiting the Cattaneo-Christov heat and mass flux expressions. The characteristic of the Lorentz force due to the magnetic field applied normal to the disk is studied. The Buongiorno model together with the Cattaneo-Christov theory is implemented in the Oldroyd-B nanofluid flow to investigate the heat and mass transport mechanism. This theory predicts the characteristics of the fluid thermal and solutal relaxation time on the boundary layer flow. The von K′arm′an similarity functions are utilized to convert the partial differential equations(PDEs) into ordinary differential equations(ODEs). A homotopic approach for obtaining the analytical solutions to the governing nonlinear problem is carried out. The graphical results are obtained for the velocity field, temperature, and concentration distributions. Comparisons are made for a limiting case between the numerical and analytical solutions, and the results are found in good agreement. The results reveal that the thermal and solutal relaxation time parameters diminish the temperature and concentration distributions, respectively.
