BACKGROUND Management of superficial bowel neoplasia(SBN)in early stages is associated with better *** last few decades experienced a paradigm shift in the management of SBN with the introduction of advanced endoscopic resection techniques(ERTs).However,there are no clear data about the aspects of ERTs in Egypt despite the growing gastroenterology *** To investigate the knowledge,attitude,and practice of ERTs toward management of SBN among Egyptian practitioners and the suitability of the endoscopy units’infrastructures toward these *** An online 2-pages questionnaire was *** first page comprised demographic data,and questions for all physicians,about the knowledge(11 questions)of and attitude(5 questions)toward ERTs as a therapeutic option for *** second page investigated the practice of ERTs by endoscopists(6 questions)and the infrastructures of their endoscopy units(14 questions).The survey was disseminated through July 2021 and the data were collected in an excel sheet and later analyzed *** The complete responses were 833/2300(36.2%).The majority of the participants were males(n=560,67.2%),middle-aged(n=366,43.9%),consultants(n=464,55.7%),gastroenterologists(n=678,81.4%),spending≥15 years in practice(n=368,44.2%),and were working in university hospitals(n=569,68.3%).The majority correctly identified the definition of SBN(88.4%)and the terms polypectomy,endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR),and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)(92.1%,90.2%,and 89.1%respectively).However,26.9%,43.2%and 49.5%did not recognize the clear indication of polypectomy,EMR,and ESD *** 68.1%of physicians are convinced about the ERTs for management of SBN;only 8.9%referred all candidate cases for *** 76.5%of endoscopists had formal training in the basic polypectomy techniques while formal training for EMR and ESD was encountered only in 31.9%and 7.2%*** 71.6%and 88.4%of endoscopists did not per

Bacille Calmette-Gu6rin(BCG) vaccine is one of the most widely used vaccines in *** Egypt,it is a part of the national compulsory childhood immunization *** most controversial aspect of BCG is the variable efficacy found in different *** study was to evaluate the efficacy status of the available BCG vaccine in Egypt within the last 10 years(BCG-Copenhagen).The pilot cross sectional study included 597 Egyptian children randomly *** ages ranged from 6 months to 10 years old(mean_ 5 years,median: 3 years).All were assessed for history of BCG vaccine intake(primary at infancy and/or secondary at school age) and examined for the presence BCG scar.A group of the vaccinated children(62 children with BCG scar and 69 children without BCG scar) were further assessed with tuberculin skin test(TST).Prevalence of BCG vaccine intake in the studied children was 86.9%(519/597).Efficacy in term of BCG scar after vaccination was 66.6%(346/519).However,efficacy in term of post BCG vaccination tuberculin sensitization was only 3.8%(5/131).BCG vaccination program in Egypt seems to be widely prevalent;however, the immunological efficacy of the available strain is questionable.

Association of XbaI GLUT1 Polymorphism with Susceptibility to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetic Nephropathy

Objectives: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the chronic microangiopathic complications of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and has become the most frequent cause of end-stage renal disease. The XbaI polymorphism in the glucose transporter (GLUT1) has been suggested in the development of DN. We examined the association between XbaI polymorphism of GLUT1 and susceptibility to T2DM and development of DN. Methods: The study included 227 T2DM patients divided into 107 without DN (DM ? DN) and 120 with DN (DM + DN), in addition to 100 apparently healthy controls. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The GLUT1 XbaI T allele was associated with increased susceptibility to T2DM, when comparing the healthy controls to the whole diabetic group, odds ratio (OR) = 1.899, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.149 - 3.136), p = 0.011. This association was also significant between healthy controls and DM ? DN OR = 1.997 (1.079 - 3.699), p = 0.026 as well as between healthy controls and DM + DN OR = 1.818 (1.016 - 3.253), p = 0.042. However there was no significant association of XbaI polymorphism with DN when comparing DM ? DN to DM + DN OR = 0.910 (0.474 - 1.747), p = 0.777. Conclusion: XbaI T allele is associated with increased susceptibility to T2DM, but not to development of DN. Further studies are needed to replicate such findings.

The C161T Polymorphism in Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor ɣ2, but Not Pro12Ala, Is Associated with Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in an Egyptian Population

Objectives: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is multifactorial with the contribution of multiple genetic factors. We questioned the association of polymorphisms in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ?2 (PPAR?2) gene (Pro12Ala and C161T) with DR in an Egyptian population. Methods: This case control study included one hundred healthy individuals and 252 T2DM among them 122 with DR and 130 without DR. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The Pro12Ala Ala allele was associated with decreased risk of DR with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.484, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.254 - 0.920), and a p value = 0.024. The C161T T allele was associated with increased risk of DR with OR = 2.593, 95% CI (1.672 - 4.020), p 1c) in multivariate regression analysis only C161T was associated with increased risk of DR with OR = 3.479, 95% CI (1.907 - 6.346), p 1c was higher in Pro/Pro genotype when compared to those with Ala/Ala and Pro/Ala genotypes. Conclusion: We report that T allele of C161T increased risk of DR in the studied population. Further studies are warranted to investigate functional implications of polymorphisms of the PPAR-? gene in DR development.

In Egypt, Tridacna Maxima are found in Gulf of Suez, Gulf of Aqaba and Red Sea. Tridacna Maxima are very important ecological species as seafood source and as a substrate for reef-associated organisms;therefore we should protect it from extinction. Recently, these species are exposed for many factors of pollution (human activities, tourism and natural resources) that affect the distribution and abundance of it. The main objective of this research is to shed some light on the origin, stratigraphic position, systematic palaeontology and geographic distribution of Tridacna Maxima. In addition to their ecologic and environmental conditions were discussed. Finally, a proposed rules for protection these species from extinction were listed. Individuals of Tridacna Maxima were collected from different sites along the red Sea coast.

Relationship Between Heavy Metal Concentrations in Bottom Sediments and the Clam, Galatea Paradoxa (Born 1778) from the Volta Estuary, Ghana

This research was carried out at two locations, Ada and Aveglo at the Volta Estuary, Ghana to evaluate the importance of sediments as regulatory media in controlling the levels of four metals, Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe) and Mercury (Hg) in the tissues of the clam, Galatea paradoxa (Born 1778) and to investigate the possible relationships between the concentrations of the metals in the sediments and the clams. The clams were categorized into three size classes as follows: small (25 - 40 mm), medium (41 - 55 mm), and large (above 55 mm). To understand the possible relationships between the concentrations of the studied metals in the sediments and in the tissues of the three clam size classes, the monthly concentrations of the studied metals were graphed and subjected to Pearson correlation analyses (p < 0.05) to identify metal accumulation patterns and determine whether or not positive relationship patterns existed between the concentrations in the clams and sediment samples. The correlation revealed no simple linear relationships between the concentrations of four heavy metals in the clam tissues and the sediments at the two sampling stations although some distinct trends were observed. Mn concentrations in the clams and sediments from the two stations showed some clear positive relationship patterns with some increments in monthly sediment concentrations resulting in increments in clam tissue concentrations. This relationship though, was not too clear-cut.
