Malonylcarnitine in Newborns with Non-syndromic Cleft Lip with or without Cleft Palate

Aim Malonyl-CoA is regarded as a key signaling molecule in mammalian ceils. It is converted to acetyl-CoA, and to a lesser extent, to malonyl acid and malonylcamitine （C3DC）. Availability of carnitine has been reported to be essential for the developing fetus. The objectives of the present study were to analyze associations of malonylcarnitine, acetylcarnitine （C2）, and free carnitine （CO） in subjects with orofacial clefts. Methodology We performed a retrospective analysis of carnitine concentration obtained from a newborn screening program carried out in our institution. Concentrations of whole blood malonylcarnitine, acetylcarnitine, and free carnitine were measured using tandem mass spectrometry. The study group consisted of 51 children with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate. In total, 106 healthy children without congenital anomalies served as controls. Cut-off points were established using likeli-hood ratio values. Results The mean concentration of malonylcarnitine in the cleft group was lower than that of the control group, 0.048 μmol.L^1 vs. 0.058 μmol.L^-1, respectively （P=-0.009）. In patients with orofacial cleft, low malonylcarnitine levels （〈0.047 μmol.L-1） were 1.7 times more predominant than in healthy individuals （P=-0.03）. The mean concentration of acetylcarnitine was also lower in affected newborns in comparison to controls, 33.8 μol.L^-1 vs. 37.8 μmol·L^-1, respectively （P=-0.026）. After analysis of acetylearnitine and free carnitine concentrations, the likelihood ratio test did not indicate valuable cut-offpoints. Conclusion The study provides initial data indicating a potential association between decreased malonylcarnitine and abnormal palatogenesis.

Processing of refractory materials using various magnesium sources derived from Zinelbulak talc-magnesite

Magnesia（MgO） is widely used in the production of refractory materials due to its high melting point,high thermal shock,and excellent slag *** properties of refractory materials depend upon magnesia sources and processing *** this work,three different magnesium sources,namely,magnesium hydroxide concentrate,magnesium carbonate concentrate,and intermediate flotation concentrate,were obtained from the Zinelbulak talc-magnesite,Uzbekistan,by causticization-hydration and flotation processes,respectively.A series of refractory materials were prepared on the basis of these magnesium sources,and their effects on physico-mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated as a function of sintering temperature,molding pressure,and the particle size of magnesium *** experimental results showed that a refractory material obtained from the magnesium hydroxide concentrate at 1600℃ for 4 h demonstrated favorable parameters due mainly to a higher degree of contact among fine *** results obtained from X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy confirmed the presence of periclase and forsterite as the predominant phases in refractory *** prepared refractory materials meet the requirements of the State Standards（Nos.4689-94 and 14832-96） for magnesia and forsterite refractories,*** is,therefore,suggested herein that the use of different magnesium sources derived from the Zinelbulak talc-magnesite will offer the potential to provide economic benefits in the refractory industry.

Individuals with special needs learn more slowly than their peers and they need repetitions to be ***,in crowded classrooms,it is dif-ﬁcult for a teacher to deal with each student *** problem can be overcome by using supportive education ***,the majority of such applications are not designed for special education and therefore they are not efﬁcient as *** education students differ from their peers in terms of their development,characteristics,and educational qualiﬁ*** handwriting skills of individuals with special needs are lower than their *** makes the task of Handwriting Recognition(HWR)more difﬁ*** over-come this problem,we propose a new personalized handwriting veriﬁcation sys-tem that validates digits from the handwriting of special education *** system uses a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)created and trained from *** data set used is obtained by collecting the handwriting of the students with the help of a tablet.A special education center is visited and the handwrittenﬁgures of the students are collected under the supervision of special education *** system is designed as a person-dependent system as every student has their writing ***,the system achieves promising results,reaching a recognition accuracy of about 94%.Overall,the system can verify special educa-tion students’handwriting digits with high accuracy and is ready to integrate with a mobile application that is designed to teach digits to special education students.

Dietary carnosic acid and seleno-compounds change concentrations of fatty acids, cholesterol, tocopherols and malondialdehyde in fat and heart of lambs

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of carnosic acid(CA),selenised yeast(^(Y)Se)and selenate(^(VI)Se)supplemented to diets,including fish oil(FO)and rapeseed oil(RO),on the content of fatty acids,total cholesterol(TCh),tocopherols and malondialdehyde in the fat located between the thigh muscles and the heart in ***-four male Corriedale lambs were divided into 4 groups of 6 *** were fed a diet with FO and RO(the control diet)or experimental diets containing RO,FO and CA with/without Se(as^(Y)Se or^(VI)Se).The experimental diets without/with^(Y)Se or^(VI)Se changed concentrations of fatty acids in the fat and heart compared to the *** experimental diets increased the levels of c11c14C20:2,c5c8c11c14C20:4,c5c8c11c14c17C20:5 and the sums of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids(LPUFA)and conjugated linoleic acid isomers in the fat compared to the *** experimental diet containing^(Y)Se or^(VI)Se increased the content of Se,TCh,c11c14C20:2,c8c11c14C20:3,c5c8c11c14C20:4,c5c8c11c14c17C20:5,c7c10c13c16c19C22:5,c4c7c10c13c16c19C22:6 and the concentration sum of n-3LPUFA,n-6LPUFA and tocopherols in the heart in comparison with the control diet and the diet containing only *** diets reduced the concentration of malon-dialdehyde in the fat and heart in comparison with the control *** dietary intervention has great potential for future practical and commercial implementations.

An improved predictive-corrective incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for fluid flow modelling

Predictive-corrective incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (PCISPH) is an efficient SPH variation originally developed for computer graphics. Its application in modeling physics-focused fluid flows has not yet been reported. In this work, an improved PCISPH method is presented for physics-focused fluid flow modeling. Different from traditional weakly-compressible SPH (WCSPH) and incompressible SPH (ISPH), PCISPH satisfies the incompressibility requirement at the particle level without a predefined equation of state. The pressure is obtained using an iterative predictive-corrective scheme at each individual particle. The presented PCISPH allows much larger time steps compared with WCSPH. It also avoids the time-consuming solution of Pressure Poisson Equation (PPE) in ISPH. Consequently, the PCISPH has high computational efficiency even with millions of computational particles. To ensure physically correct modeling of fluid flows, we employ several techniques to enhance the accuracy and stability of the PCISPH:(1) the continuity equation is used to predict density, replacing the mass summation approach used in the original PCISPH,(2) numerical diffusion and pressure smoothing are introduced to improve the pressure computation,(3) a generalized boundary treatment approach which can handle arbitrarily complex geometries is employed,(4) an adaptive time-stepping algorithm is used, allowing efficient simulation as well as ensuring stability. The performance of the improved PCISPH is systematically investigated using three standard SPH validation cases. Comparisons between the improved PCISPH and the state-of-the-art 5 - SPH are presented. It is found that the improved PCISPH gives numerical results as accurate as J - SPH, except for having moderate temporal pressure oscillations. Analysis of the lifetime and culling reasons for AI boars

Background: The aim of the study was to analyze the lifetime and culling reasons for boars used in insemination centers(AI centers).Methods: The data collected from 355 culled boars from 1998 to 2013 included: age at start of semen collection,boar herd life, culling reason, daily gain and lean meat content, and number of ejaculates not meeting sales requirements after dilution. Culling reasons were divided into 7 groups: low semen value(LSV), low or lack of libido(LL), leg problems(LP), infectious diseases(ID), old age(OA), reduced demand for semen from the given boar(RD),and others(OT).Results: The most common culling reasons for boars were LSV(23.7%) and RD(22.5%). It was observed that the lowest daily gains were noted in boars culled due to OA. Boars culled due to OA and RD were maintained in production for the longest time(over 1000 d), for LSV and ID retention was about 700 d, and due to LL below 400 d. The survival probability was over 0.9 until 1.5 yr, and just over 0.2 until 4 yr. The highest relative frequency was observed in the 36 ^(th) and 42 ^(nd) mo of life(over 16%). Hazard risk analysis revealed a more than 10 times higher risk of culling in the case of LL, ID or OT, in comparison to ***: The results can be used as a direct point of reference for the identification of emerging problems in AI boar exploitation and the development of an appropriate culling policy in AI centers.

A non-lithographic plasma nanoassembly technology for polymeric nanodot and silicon nanopillar fabrication

In this work, we present plasma etching alone as a directed assembly method to both create the nanodot pattern on an etched polymeric (PMMA) film and transfer it to a silicon substrate for the fabrication of silicon nanopillars or cone-like nanostructuring. By using a shield to control sputtering from inside the plasma reactor, the size and shape of the resulting nanodots can be better controlled by varying plasma parameters as the bias power. The effect of the shield on inhibitor deposition on the etched surfaces was investigated by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) measurements. The fabrication of quasi-ordered PMMA nanodots of a diameter of 25 nm and period of 54 nm is demonstrated. Pattern transfer to the silicon substrate using the same plasma reactor was performed in two ways:(a) a mixed fluorine-fluorocarbon-oxygen nanoscale etch plasma process was employed to fabricate silicon nanopillars with a diameter of 25 nm and an aspect ratio of 5.6, which show the same periodicity as the nanodot pattern, and (b) high etch rate cryogenic plasma process was used for pattern transfer. The result is the nanostructuring of Si by high aspect ratio nanotip or nanocone-like features that show excellent antireflective properties.

Negative-pressure pneumatic separator:a new solution for hard-coal beneficiation

Hard coal is an important source of energy *** to the imperfections of excavation technology,most run-of-mine coals must be processed before they can be utilised as *** this study,tests on the dry separation process were performed with numerous different raw hard coal and coal waste material samples,using a newly designed and constructed negative-pressure pneumatic separator(NPPS).The experiments revealed the effects of the feed-material properties and material processing *** experiments were preceded by additional tests for evaluating the influence of each device operating parameter on the process,to determine the optimal method of supplying the feed *** calorific value of the processed materials was improved by 5%–40%,while a minimal output yield of products(60%–70%)was *** trials indicated that in coal material processing,the developed NPPS can be used for not only raw coal enrichment but also coal recovery from materials stored at coal-waste *** main advantages of the device are its mobility,low material processing cost,and lack of water consumption during operation.
