Objective: To determine abundance, distribution and diversity of potential breeding container habitats of the dengue vectors in public places including schools, restaurants,mosques and parks in southwest areas of Penang Island, Malaysia.Methods: Premises at restaurants, schools, parks and mosques were surveyed simultaneously and inspected visually for container habitats and production of immature mosquitoes from March 2015 to March 2016. Abundance(mean ± SE) of breeding containers between sites was compared using One-way ANOVA. Independent sample ttest was used to compare total number of Aedes albopictus(Ae. albopictus) and Aedes aegypti(Ae. aegypti) surveyed.Results: The surveyed locations yielded a total of 3 741 breeding containers and 19 537 immature mosquitoes from four areas. Concurrent artificial and natural containers produced 78.4% immature Ae. albopictus and 6.3% Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in wet season,with 14.2% Ae. albopictus and 1.1% Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in dry season. Artificial containers accounted for 98.1% of the total containers recorded, with restaurants being the most productive locations(8 012) and schools being the least productive(2 234).Conclusions: It was concluded that public places are good sources of potential container habitats of Aedes mosquitoes in Penang Island, Malaysia and Ae. albopictus has exclusively replaced the home-grown Ae. aegypti even in urban areas. Therefore, treatment of artificial containers in such locations is critical in Aedes mosquito control campaigns during dengue outbreaks.

Background:The frequency and magnitude of dengue epidemics continue to increase exponentially in Malaysia,with a shift in the age range predominance toward adults and an expansion to rural areas.Despite this,information pertaining to the extent of transmission of dengue virus(DENV)in the rural community is lacking.This communitybased pilot study was conducted to establish DENV seroprevalence amongst healthy adults in a rural district in Southern Malaysia,and to identify influencing factors.Methods:In this study undertaken between April and May 2015,a total of 277 adult participants were recruited from households across three localities in the Sungai Segamat subdistrict in Segamat district.Sera were tested for immunoglobulin G(IgG)(Panbio®Dengue Indirect IgG ELISA/high-titer capture)and immunoglobulin M(IgM)(Panbio®)antibodies.The plaque reduction neutralization test(PRNT)was conducted on random samples of IgGpositive sera for further confirmation.Medical history and a recall of previous history of dengue were collected through interviews,whereas sociodemographic information was obtained from an existing database.Results:The overall seroprevalence for DENV infection was 86.6%(240/277)(95%CI:83-91%).Serological evidence of recent infection(IgM/high-titer capture IgG)was noted in 11.2%(31/277)of participants,whereas there was evidence of past infection in 75.5%(209/277)of participants(indirect IgG minus recent infections).The PRNT assay showed that the detected antibodies were indeed specific to DENV.The multivariate analysis showed that the older age group was significantly associated with past DENV infections.Seropositivity increased with age;48.5%in the age group of45 years(P<0.001).No associations with occupation,study site,housing type,comorbidity,educational level,and marital status were observed,although the latter two were statistically significant in the univariate analysis.None of the studied factors were significantly associated with recent DENV infections in the

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of container breeding mosquitoes with emphasis on the seasonality and larval habitats of Aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti) in Makkah City,adjoining an environmental monitoring and dengue incidence.Methods:Monthly visits were performed between April 2008 and March 2009 to randomly selected houses.During each visit,mosquito larvae were collected from indoors and outdoors containers by either dipping or pipetting. Mosquitoes were morphologically identified.Data on temperature,relative humidity,rain/ precipitations during the survey period was retrieved from governmental sources and analyzed. Results:The city was warmer in dry season(DS) than wet season(WS).No rain occurred at all during DS and even precipitations did fall,wetting events were much greaterduring WS.Larval survey revealed the co-breeding of Aedes,Culex and Anopheles in a variety of artificial containers in and around homes.32109 larvae representing 1st,2nd,3rd,and 4th stages were collected from 22618 container habitats.Culicines was far the commonest and Aedes genus was as numerous as the Culex population.Ae.aegypti larval abundance exhibited marked temporal variations,overall, being usually more abundant during WS.Ten types of artificial containers were found with developing larvae.70%of these habitats were located indoors.71.42%of indoor containers were permanent and 28.58* was semi-permanent during WS.Cement tanks was the only container type permanent during DS.Ae.aegypti larval indices(CI,HI,Bl) recorded were greater during WS. Conclusions:Taken together,these results indicate a high risk of dengue transmission in the holy city.

Erosion as a natural process produces soils, which are very important natural resources for the fest land plant- and animal kingdoms. Loss of the soil cover reduces agricultural production, biodiversity, and the role of soil as a filter for infiltrating water to replenish the groundwater. It also threatens the food supplies. The knowledge of erosion rates of rocks and terrains is important for developing proactive measures to protect soils from erosion and loss. In this study, erosion rates of catchment areas were calculated based on dams’ catchment extensions and the sediment loads transported by flood flows into dams’ lakes. The study results show that the chemically, via floodwater, transported quantities of materials are negligible compared to the solid materials transported by the water. It calculates erosion rates ranging from 0.013 to 0.212 mm/yr (13 - 212 m/106 yr) for the different catchment areas. Erosion rates in Jordan are, generally, higher than those calculated for the different parts of the world ranging from 2.5 to 60 m/106 yr. This fact can be explained by the very steep topography, calcareous rock cover of the catchment areas and the barren rock exposures.

Germline genetics of high penetrance such as BRCA genes,mutations might be sufficient for carcinogenesis,but this only explains fewer than 10%of cancers.We assume that most cancers are the result of germline mutations of low to moderate penetrance,combined with acquired mutations due to external carcinogenic stressors.With their accumulation over time,aging is associated with an increased risk of multiple cancer development in a given individual.For decades,germline genetics have been based on familial linkage studies enabling most high-penetrance genes to be identified.More recently,population-wide studies have led to the identification of considerable numbers of polymorphisms associated with cancer risk.However,most of them are of unknown functional value,thus limiting their translational application.

Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the effects of foot reflexology on fatigue and sleep quality in school-aged children receiving hemodialysis.Methods:A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was utilized.Thirty children of ages 6-12 undergoing in-center hemodialysis were recruited.The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)and Inventory of Fatigue Symptom(IFS)scales were administered at baseline.Participants then received 30 min of foot reflexology massage before hemodialysis sessions 3 days per week for 12 weeks.Posttest administration of the sleep and fatigue scales occurred after the intervention period.Results:Reflexology massage led to significant improvements in sleep quality components,including duration(0%-30%normal sleepers),efficiency(0%-50%>85%),latency(50%-0%>60 min),disturbances,and daytime dysfunction.The mean PSQI score decreased from 18.2 to 9.7(P<0.05).Fatigue severity substantially decreased,with the mean IFS score improving from 105.7 to 64.1(P<0.05).Conclusion:Foot reflexology is an effective nursing intervention for reducing fatigue and improving sleep quality in children on hemodialysis,warranting integration into routine care.

Background Despite advances in asthma treatments,severe asthma exacerbation(SAE)remains a life-threatening condition in adults,and there is a lack of data derived from adult patients admitted to intensive care units(ICUs)for SAE.The current study investigated changes in adult patient characteristics,management,and outcomes of SAE over a 20-year period in 40 ICUs in the greater Paris area.Methods In this retrospective observational study,admissions to 40 ICUs in the greater Paris area for SAE from January 1,1997,to December 31,2016 were analyzed.The primary outcome was the proportion of ICU admissions for SAE during 5-year periods.Secondary outcomes were ICU and hospital mortality,and the use of mechanical ventilation and catecholamine.Multivariate analysis was performed to assess factors associated with ICU mortality.Results A total of 7049 admissions for SAE were recorded.For each 5-year period,the proportion decreased over time,with SAE accounting for 2.84%of total ICU admissions(n=2841)between 1997 and 2001,1.76%(n=1717)between 2002 and 2006,1.05%(n=965)between 2007 and 2011,and 1.05%(n=1526)between 2012 and 2016.The median age was 46 years(interquartile range[IQR]:32–59 years),55.41%were female,the median Simplified Acute Physiology Score II was 20(IQR:13–28),and 19.76%had mechanical ventilation.The use of mechanical ventilation remained infrequent throughout the 20-year period,whereas the use of catecholamine decreased.ICU and hospital mortality rates decreased.Factors associated with ICU mortality were renal replacement therapy,catecholamine,cardiac arrest,pneumothorax,acute respiratory distress syndrome,sepsis,and invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV).Non-survivors were older,had more severe symptoms,and were more likely to have received IMV.Conclusion ICU admission for SAE remains uncommon,and the proportion of cases decreased over time.Despite a slight increase in symptom severity during a 20-year period,ICU and hospital mortality decreased.Patients requiring IMV had a higher mortality rate.

Recent decades have seen a substantial increase in interest in research on natural fibres that is aligned with sustainable development goals(SDGs).Due to their renewable resources and biodegradability,natural fiberreinforced composites have been investigated as a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials to reduce the usage of hazardous waste and environmental pollution.Among the natural fibre,jute fibre obtained from a bast plant has an increasing trend in the application,especially as a reinforcement material.Numerous research works have been performed on jute fibre with regard to reinforced thermoset and thermoplastic composites.Nevertheless,current demands on sustainable materials have required new developments in thermoplastic composites.In this paper,the author reviews jute plants as reinforcement materials for thermoplastic matrix polymers.This review provides an overview of the sustainability of jute plants as reinforcement material for thermoplastic matrix polymers.The overview on jute based thermoplastic composites focused on the thermal behavior and mechanical properties.Apart from physical,chemical,and mechanical properties,the study also covers the current and perspectives for future research challenges faced by the researchers on jute fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites.
